Happy New Year! – Let’s meet the new kid
Hello, and a belated happy new year to everyone. My name is Andrew Molyneux. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and let you know that I’ll be continuing as editor of the Yahoo! Mail Blog.
So who am I and why am I here? Well, let me give you a brief synopsis… First and foremost, I live and breathe Yahoo Mail, and you’d be hard pressed to find someone more passionate about Yahoo! Mail and our users than I. I’ve been working for Yahoo! for the last 3 years and Yahoo! Mail specifically for the past 2 years as a program manager and customer champion for Europe, as well as authoring the UK Mail Blog.
And even though I’m based here in Europe, I’m originally from the US. I’m an East coast kid at heart, a Philly boy (Go Eagles!!). But I’ve been living in the London with my wife for the last 3.5 years and just recently moved to Switzerland to work at our new European headquarters – Yodelayeehoo!
I’m going to continue Ryan’s great work in communicating all that’s great about Yahoo! and Yahoo! Mail. I will keep you informed of what our team is doing to deliver you the best mail experience there is. There is lots of good stuff in store for this year, and I hope you’ll keep coming back to see what’s new.
All the best for the New Year.

Welcome, Andrew. Ryan allowed us to post our most annoying bugs here in the comment section of the blog and would respond to them the best he could. Will you do so also? My recent merry-go-round with Y!Mail customer support was, let’s say, not very satisfactory, and this was for a pretty obvious “issue” even after I submitted a failing scenario. I have a few more issues with Y!Mail that I just don’t have the energy to try and push through your CS. Y!Mail has become a bit ragged these past few months, especially the “restore previous season” dialog. Anyway, welcome.
January 16th, 2009 at 5:02 am
Guess Ryan got the Boot… This is the first post in about a month on the YMail Blog.
It’s pretty simple. We want real IMAP… that works in Apple Mail or Outlook, etc. right now. No one really cares about the apps targeted to 11 year olds. Offering POP Mail for a “premium” fee along with only 10MB attachments unless you pay to get 20MB attachments is a joke. Besides free IMAP, GMail offers 20MB for free.
Fix the mess of pages that require you to navigate YMail’s configuration pages. Some are in the “new mode”… Some are in the “old mode”…. It’s a sloppy mess to configure. It’s been like this for years now.
Want to learn what we don’t like about YMail? Read the comments in the last few posts.

When I subscribed to Att I didn’t know that the old Arkansas neighbor call,”Yahoo”, would be a part of it soon after. IF YOU HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN YOU CLK THE NEW ADVANCED TOOLBAR ON MAIL NOTHING HAPPENS, it is simply because Yahoo SUUCKS BIG! Just like when you ask a search question, the answers have nothing to do with your question. Instructions are impossible because it’s is missing all the keywords you are supposed to follow. Simple questions will never get simple answers. ASK.com is usually asking for money for some expert to answer your question. It is very frustrating. If I had known that STUPID was the only qualification for setting up a site I might have done it myself
January 17th, 2009 at 9:33 am
i wonder how……? i wonder why…….? lets get party……hohohoho……..
January 16th, 2009 at 5:53 am
Good. Lets get the ball rolling and address some of the issues on this blog…!
January 16th, 2009 at 7:02 am
I have had it I’m DONE… time to switch….
I have done the time waiting for the old reliable fast yahoo to return for over a yr while the techs keep making it worse and filled out feedback, blogs and surveys… hate to have to switch all the email addresses and contacts, but the time has come…Hope no one has stock in yahoo these days… the techs are sinking the ship.
Loooooong time user and loyal fan of Yahoomail since it started…it was great while lasted
January 16th, 2009 at 7:20 am
Welcome, Andrew! Nice to meet you.
I have no problems with Yahoo! Mail right now (besides delayed/lost messages through Yahoo! Groups – but with a bit of patience, it usually works out). Just wanted to point the no-problems-part out after that series of comments! ;)
January 16th, 2009 at 8:47 am
I would have to agree, Yahoo Mail has been REALLY bad these past few months. The only thing worst is the service we get when we have problems !!!!!!!! WHY ?
January 16th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
The answer is Jerry Yang….
Yahoo has been effectively leaderless for some time now….
Here’s hoping that Ms. Brantz knows what she’s doing…. Maybe she knows what IMAP is too.
January 16th, 2009 at 9:00 am
If you ever need to interview a person who uses Yahoo mail on a dail up connection, I would be happy to have you fly me to Switzerland to give you some feedback in person. Yodelayeehoo! And have a great year!!
January 16th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Andrew-
To reiterate what I said earlier….
Not offering real IMAP is pathetic. Zimbra is a joke. A locked email client for IMAP? Please….
You’d better have something good to share in the comments thread to keep us around.
January 16th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Fed,
Good news, I talked to some people at Yahoo and they will have FULL IMAP support at the end of this decade (2010), please GET A LIFE AND STOP ASKING FOR IMAP EVERY HOUR.. I promise you will have it by end of 2010
I guess you are not a very busy person because you can comment every hr so why do you care so much about IMAP? you can “spend” 1 min of your time and type mail.yahoo.com!
BTW, I dont know anybody at Yahoo… just want him to stop!
January 16th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Stop with the hyperbole.
The facts are that that’s 2-3 years behind GMail if what you say is “true”….
Busy or not… I seem to care more about YMail getting IMAP than you do. Go have a Coke and a Smile….
January 16th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Yahoo!’s in the tank financially, there may not be Yahoo! Mail in 2010.
Kinda a shame, I like Y! and really like Y!Mail!
January 16th, 2009 at 9:07 am
Happy New Year….Andrew…Keep up the good work….And By The Way… Thanks For All Your Hard Work..
January 16th, 2009 at 9:23 am
For the love of God, can we stop with the IMAP comments? There are dozens of email options out there: Go use one that offers IMAP if that’s what you want.
Welcome, Andrew. Here’s hoping you’re a patient fellow. Go Steelers.
January 16th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
While overlooked, impatience is also a virtue….
Think anyone at Yahoo actually uses Zimbra because they like it?
January 16th, 2009 at 10:17 am
Ok, now everyone can take a deep breath and relax, people are getting a little heated up in here. Love the blog especially as a first time user.
January 16th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Service??? WHAT service!?…not Yahoo…
January 16th, 2009 at 11:05 am
i agree with fed up aol offer pop and imap for free and yahoo doesnt care what there user base think aol has transform these past month everybody check the new aol its blow yahoo out the water have u seen aol new mail format its nice i rather have plug in then suggest connection hey andrew will u respond back to us or will just stay quiet hey fed up just go aol i think have enough with yahoo its 2009 still no free pop and imap
January 16th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Well said!
January 16th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Go getum Andy..Jim
January 16th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I guess most people expect more than I do. What I’ve asked of Yahoo has been done. It seems that patience is not only a virtue but perhaps a saving grace. Wishing you all a calm and happy new year.
January 16th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Something annoying in yahoo mail:
POP mail used to work properly. Now, it returns error messages after being configured with default settings. TURNS OUT that one must uncheck leave mail on server and get only new messages options for it to work. This is very very silly. Either disable by default or eliminate options if they don’t work
January 16th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
you have a lot of comments

January 16th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
So people want to attack me as the messenger? That seems easy to do…
Ryan’s responses were not satisfactory. And if they were on behalf of Yahoo, then Yahoo’s responses were not satisfactory.
You can thank me when Yahoo has IMAP. I seem to care the most about it anyway.
So how ’bout it Andrew? More of the same or something new?
January 16th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Dear Andrew,
Good luck. Yahoo mail sucks. I’ve been a member since it first started. I always know when a change is going to take place because I no longer receive my mail, can’t retrieve it, and can’t get anyone in customer service to understand this happens. They are not kind, always give the same “poor stupid user” phraseology that doesn’t fix it, and then I get so angry I just quit trying and hope someday my messages will come out of the black hole they disappeared into. When Yahoo makes upgrades, they are unannounced, are usually worse than before and contain things the typical end-user doesn’t care about. I miss Yahoo. I never had any problems until about 2 years ago, and now it’s every few weeks or months, and always with an upgrade. And more messages I have watched people send to me with my correct address never arrive in my box. It’s sad, but I really do wish you luck. Hope this reaches you.
January 19th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
ok i understand ur feelings bu iv seen norobs. so watz goin on and can it happen to me???
January 16th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

January 16th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
hello, can anyone help me?…I’m trying to send a same e-mail to a large group of friends….instead of sending it one at a time, I believe that’s a group address format that the mail can be sent once to all the addressee…
Thank you for your help…
January 16th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Welcome!
January 16th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
What an awesome opportunity to do all that neat traveling. You sure had an angel smiling down on you. Well, I was going to change my Yahoo. to another station-web host; however, after reading your letter…think I’d like to hang around for another six months. Now keep up the good work!
Sincerely-
January 16th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Jesus, I actually bursted out laughing reading these comments. Andrew, looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you.
So are the posts here going to be the same as those on the UK blog (efficient)?
January 18th, 2009 at 9:04 am
I’d be happy with more than 1 post a month….
January 16th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
yahoo staff has lost there mojo even aol look like they going make huge strides there page and offering is good there feedback are decent yahoo are bunch of –[ : ]– should have taken msn offer
January 16th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Recent change in “format” is a pain where I sit!! Takes ten minutes to navigate to where I can pick up my e-mail. No announcement no instructions. Other users like it? Fine, I respect that. Give me and those like me the option of using what to me was much easier to use. There must be other old geezers like me who want it plain and simple
January 16th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
- Clean up mails’ pending stuff. (its really annoying to see different page for for settings)
- Some way to integrate with desktop client (preferably IMAP). I know major concern of mail team would be retaining ppl. as if someone gets a hook to move outside yahoo they will download everything and move to another mail service (say gmail). So maybe to start you can provide some plugin sort of stuff for that.
- Clear all help pages…They are really misleading. Lots of yahoo products are in beta and evolving. So things that are not possible should be mentioned correctly. Yahoo support is really ridiculous sometimes. Its relly bad when something advertised does not work.(Like CalDav)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Y-Mail/message/17291
All the Best..!!
January 17th, 2009 at 4:32 am
Well said Jigar…
It’s interesting how retaining people is not a major concern of Google’s Mail team as far as their offering IMAP…
It’s also not a concern of AOL Mail either….
Wow… how did that happen?
January 16th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

First off I want to welcome you. Second of all, I want to know why yahoo has taken our choices away as to the way we want to send e-mails. I had it all set up to the way I like it but yahoo took that all away and I have to do a lot of frustrating clicking here and there and everywhere. I’m tired of it and so are my fingers. Please give us back our choices. Thank you.
January 17th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

I do hope that the Yahoo fearless leader gets to see this…..
PLEASE PEOPLE
How do I turn OFF the feature of having the robot select some email addresses from my address book and present them under a huge ugly purple banner and clutter up my email page, If I wanted to contact any given individual in my email list, I would simply do so, but this big ugly purple banner is a WASTE! are we clear on this?
maybe there is a way to turn off that feature and I just haven’t found the right button yet but … hey, help me out here, alright?

Few comments (don’t know this is the right place),
1. Yahoo Go can not be installed in SEk800i phone.
2. Hard to use html in mail signature. Even used takes some time to load.
Cheers.

I’ve had issues with Yahoo, but the techs have solved them each time, BUT, i don’t even know what imap is, so I have no compaints!
January 19th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Thanks for censoring me while I try to tell the poster what IMAP is…
Why don’t you tell her then Andrew since the Blog won’t let me?
January 18th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
As you may or may not know, spammers are now sending web addresses through Yahoo Instant Messaging. What is needed is a way to battle these bums, maybe a SPAM button in YIM. How about it?
January 18th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Also, messages not intended for me, but containing certain shared letters or numbers as my email, are finding their way into my email box. This is really annoying and I wish it would stop. Can you make it stop?

Hey Ryan,
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU TOO!!! How do people find your e-mail address even if you do not want them to find it?? I am new at this enternet thing, and i have all kinds of people e-mailing me from around the world!!! And i really do like YAHOO, this has got to be the coolest thing that i have ever seen!!! Also, how many people use YAHOO??
January 19th, 2009 at 9:14 am
I believe goods things are never instant, we have to wait for it.
Please keep up working on the improve of Yahoo.Mail
I’ts better late than never.
Welcome!
January 19th, 2009 at 9:44 am
How do I know you are legitimately hired and working for yahoo? I am bombarded by spam and when I send a complaint to Yahoo, I get this link in my box as a reply. Something has got to be done about this spam!!!!! So what can YOU do?
January 19th, 2009 at 9:54 am
All this “Connections” crud is killing my Yahoo experience. I’m slowly migrating to GMail.
Welcome to the beginning of the end Andrew.
January 19th, 2009 at 10:18 am
What’s all this new stuff when yahoo can’t even sort my email into folders I set up. Come now even the last blog agreed Yahoo mail sort does not work and send to spam is a joke when you get the same email the next day in your regular mail. So instead of fixing the greatest Email on the planet they gee wiz you with “new” stuff how ironic. My ash tray is full shall I get a new car to fix it? My email is full of crap that belongs in folders as it comes in and spam that was told the day before to stay out shall I get a new Email provider to fis it?
January 19th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
You are so funny and I love you humorous use of words. Im in! You definitly can make my day more uplifted. Thanks.
January 20th, 2009 at 6:21 am
Wow, Ryan must’ve been laid off w/ all the other Yahoos. Sad.
January 21st, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Maybe GMail is hiring away the talent?
January 21st, 2009 at 5:22 am
Congrats DREW DREW!
January 21st, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Wow Andrew…
I can see that YMail really cares… You haven’t bothered to respond to a single comment on this thread… which has in excess of 100 comments.
At least Ryan responded… and who knows where he is now…
Check that… he’s probably using GMail’s free IMAP on Outlook or Apple Mail.
Great start!
January 22nd, 2009 at 5:18 am
I hope you check and respond once in a while to the yahoo mail group. there is a lot of useful feedback there that should be implemented to make yahoo a stronger competitor in email. Jsut b/c it has more people doesn’t mean that it is the best product (b/c i think most people would agree it is not). I feel the main reason most people stay with any email provider (as long as it is not total crap) is because the move to a new email address is annoying.
Anyway, in short, yahoo mail should be trying to improve at a fast pace to exceed/keep up with competitors. There are obviously great info and products in your reach (ideas: from us and yahoo groups and others, tech from: Zimbra and your current development team). let’s see those features implemented on yahoo webmail soon!
January 22nd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I would like to simply tag multiple e-mails and drag them to my hard disk. thus removing them from yahoo. I do not need links to stay active, just the body of the email.

Maybe you can help fix the problem that prevents Safari users from accessing their Yahoo Business Mail. This is enough to drive a person insane.

Great work Andrew!
No response to the fact that you haven’t responded to a single comment yet?
Keep it up! Make us YMail users proud! We’re glad you’re in charge!
January 26th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Wake up from your nap Andrew!
You’re a “one post wonder”!
You haven’t posted anything since your “hello” message….
You haven’t even bothered to respond to a single one of the 100+ comments in response to your post….
Meet the “new” boss…. same as the “old” boss.
I’m not impressed…. and if you’re the “best” the YMail team has to offer, YMail is done, kaput, through….

Looks like Andrew hit the snooze button again…
Explains a lot about YMail’s current sad state doesn’t it?
January 27th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Hard at work on our IMAP Andrew?
Are you even employed there anymore?
Q: “What would you say do you here….?”
A: “I take the specifications from the customers to the engineers”…..
Explains a lot about Yahoo’s current sad state….

How to create sub-folder in the new Yahoo email ?
Could you add this feature as soon as possible?
January 27th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
When will mail search be able to return results that are more than a few months old like it used to? If the search can’t find e-mails from last July, then it’s broken. It doesn’t work. When will it be fixed? Thanks.

Maybe I am the exception, but I do not like forced changes. I am perfectly happy with the layout the way it was and do not care for the “new and improved”. I also do not like the fact that we get “forced” into taking the new look, there is no choice!!
Please get me back to where I was.
Thanks,
Bert

your mail sucks on my web page works half the time
February 4th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Ok, now hopefully you will give people what they want… IMAP for FREE. We want IMAP so we can use apple mail and outlook. We don’t want to use that zimbra thingy, if we can only use that, why not just use your web browser. We want to be able to choose which program we want to use and still use the other features of yahoo like answers and such.
This would be a great improvment! If its not available soon, I’m thinking of getting a gmail account where I CAN get IMAP for free.
Happy New Year, and hope you can give us this…
February 6th, 2009 at 9:03 am
I am in complete agreement with “me”…
Andrew! Wake up… we’re talking here… and some of us bother paying for this service…
WE WANT IMAP FOR FREE! JUST LIKE GMAIL HAS.
