Final Update (27 October 2008): I have just spoken with Virgin/NTL. According to them, the issue affecting service in their ticket – F820104 – has been resolved. Everything should be back to normal again. At present, there are no other reported outages and all Yahoo services are working. If you are a Virgin/NTL customer and are having issues viewing Yahoo pages, please contact them and reference F820104.
————–
UPDATE (23 October 2008): Some Virgin Media customers are experiencing difficulty accessing Yahoo sites including Yahoo Mail. If your ISP is Virgin Media or NTL and you are having difficulty accessing Yahoo, you can give them a call and give them F820104 as a reference number.
The issue described below has been fixed and everything is working normally now.
Thanks,
Andrew – Yahoo Mail Team

Original Post (29/08/2008):
Some of you may have experienced difficulties logging into Yahoo! Mail this morning. The problem occurred this from about 8.00 in the morning. Our crack network engineering team was on the case immediately and was able to fix the problem by 10.00. We had some difficulties with some of our equipment which were fixed as quickly as possible. Any PC user who ever has had to reboot their computer should know what that’s like – of course you Mac users out there probably never feel our pain ;-)
All systems are back to normal now and you should no longer have any issues logging into and using mail. We apologize if you were one of the few effected by the Yahoo! Mail outage.
Happy emailing,
Andrew – Yahoo Mail Team

When I open up Yahoo, firstly it opens up on the home page and then that disappears and is replaced by an Error Page. I then go into Back and Yahoo Home page returns

Thanks for telling us.

Same problem for me as Douglas Jones, the popup says something about an “invalid argument” but then works anyway?
August 30th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Thanks for that. I think it’s good that you have updated us in this blog. I reckon it would be handy to keep doing that whenever any quirks or downtime may occur. It’d be nice to have a re-directed page or header on Yahoo! Mail saying something like, “We’re having a few problems, back shortly.” A bit like Flickr or Twitter do.
Thanks again.

why not mac? Macs in Animation in our Lab (In delhi, India) gets restarted ever 2 hour or so, depending upon the use.
Our administrator says Heat is the cause of these!!!
Windows machines,i have seen runs better than macs. In India. atleast this is how it operates. I only read on internet about more of mac (nicy things ) than windows.
p.s. I am both a windows and mac user.

Problems still appear to be there as of 11:20am 2nd September.
Myself, AND other colleagues are all experiencing problems signing onto Yahoo accounts. The message says we have invalid userid or passwords BUT after 2 or 3 attempts it allows us to logon. One colleague even received an email from yahoo stating he had changed his password even tho he hadn’t, and was eventually able to logon using the same pw as before!
Blackberry BIS servers are also receiving invalid pw errors from yahoo.

The stationary was a real hit; before that the image bar was….but you are posting a lot of random stuff.
Yes you are good but are posting to often
The outage was a minor fault lasting no more than 2hrs.
I always get kept signed into Yahoo, so much for that post.
Throw away e-mail addresses is already a feature
and so on, and even the mailto: link thing wasn’t massive!!
You need to put your thinking caps on and think of something BIG to top the best.
However I am gkad you are posting as my other po blogs have not had posts after 6 Aug
Plius the blog is disserpeering when I typing. !!! for some reason

I cannot access my mail. It is no use Andrew giving us jolly lighthearted quips when I am trying to run a business. Where is my Yahoo Mail? I also find it annoying to open the mail page and find a bloody advert for Yahoo updates when you cannot even make the one I have got work.
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 am
according to my watch and screen clock it is 11.06 BST yet you timed my comment at 10.06. Are you working to a different time zone?
September 5th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
For at least the last 8 hours I have been unable to log into Yahoo Mail.
I am using the correct e-mail address and password. It seems to start the process but gets no further than half way. Is this the same as on 29 August and 2 September?
I would appreciate an early “fix” to your problem so that I can return to my problems.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I am able to log into Yahoo Mail again.
Many thanks.
Mark Goodman.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I am glad that the problem has been fixed. It was no fun, trying to log in the whole day and still logging in again and again when one has to send an urgent email. I presume this was not the first time. I would like to congratulate on your tireless effort to make this Yahoo a best email that one can ever have where we can log in anywhere in the continent or in the world. Cheers mate!
September 10th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
when i type email, letters in text fail to appear sometimes at random, keyboard only 3 weeks old but still tried new one…..no different, any ideas anyone? p.s. works perfectly other than on yahoo mail site!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 11th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
It seems the problem is back, I have spoken to 6 of my friends who have yahoo mail and none of us can log in.
September 13th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
What are you on about? It works fine. Plus it is your job to fix these errors as basic. We have a choice of 3 replacements, AOL, GMai/Google Maill or Hotmail/Live.

Hi Ieuan,
Thanks for your comment. I just want make sure that you and our other users know when there is an issue (and when it’s been fixed). I feel it’s better to be open about these things… if there is an issue let everyone know. So, if you try to logon to mail and can’t get in, using this blog I can let you know, that we know, so that you know that we know (etc.) there is an issue ;-). And I can also let you know when it’s fixed.
Make sense (I hope)?

Hi Team,
Would it be at all possible to increase the size limitation for attachments from 10mb (a measley amount) to somewhere around 50mb as i send a lot of pdf format invoices to my boss via email attachments and have to keep making it them the size of a postage stamp in order to send them. I I don’t reduce them in size I get error saying file size too large.
Regards
John

Why Online Chat Facility is not available in Yahoo Classic Mail?!?
It would have better if there’s a Chat Screen/Chat facility in Yahoo Classic.. Try to make it possible Yahoo Team!

Perhaps your “crack network engineering team” can get to work getting rid of ad.yieldmanager !!
September 17th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I followed the instructions to change from yahoo.co.uk to yahoo.com but nothing has happened as my address is still saying yahoo.co.uk and all my contacts cannot now reach me as they are sending mail to the yahoo.com
September 18th, 2008 at 1:49 am
Mail and Groups were a disaster most of yesterday in Malaysia.
Mail is ALWAYS a problem because the adverts rarely load and IE simply freezes.
September 18th, 2008 at 8:51 am
Anyone else having problems using Yahoo mail today and yesterday? Apart from problems logging in everytime I try to compose a message I keep on getting a warning from explorer ‘Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page? You were in the middle of composing a message. You will lose your changes if you press ok’. Then I lose the page!
Any solutions?

October 5th, 2008 at 7:29 am
On 3 Sep I tried to sign in. On verifying my ID and password I was informed it (or they) were invalid. I have tried repeatedly, using the ID and password that I have always used. I cannot sign in, therefore cannot apply for a new password. I’m stuck in this roundabout. How can I access my account?

Hi Michael,
I’m sorry to hear that you are unable to login to your account. Please visit this help page: http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/edit/id_password/edit-20.html. From there you will be able to reset your password. If that doesn’t help, please contact our customer care department, providing an alternate email address for them to contact you.
Thanks,
Andrew – Yahoo! Mail Team

When I type in Yahoo email, around a third of the letters do not appear and several words appear together without any space between them, despite my having hit the space bar as normal. This has been going on for at least a month.
It is NOT a keyboard issue, since it works perfectly in Word etc. I see that other users have complained of the same problem. When are Yahoo going to sort it out, please? It’s a considerable inconvenience.

When I created two new yahoo.co.uk email accounts, I used my original yahoo.com email address so in case I lost or forgot my password, it could be retrieved.
I’ve tried verifying the emails sent to my original .com addy and I get failure notices. That I need to log into the account I’m trying to verify. I do that and I still get a failure notice.
Since last night (9Oct08) I’ve not been able to access any of my yahoo products I use on all accounts. Groups, email, messenger, MyYahoo.
If I could get into my account I’d remove the original email account as Yahoo has tried to link them apparently. Everything requires me to go through the https://login.yahoo.com and I get a failure notice that it cannot be found.
I’ve spoken with nearby friends and they are having no problems, nor is my ISP with the yahoo domains.
Help please?
October 12th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I have had difficulty aceesing my mails for more than a week. I get the Yahoo home page and then the intro mail page but when I try to get into my in box the system hangs. I tried turning off the phisshing gadget and even trying in the middle of the night but still no luck. After a week it appears to have come right.
I have been having recurring problems with Internet explorer 7 reporting that it cannot load the page and then when I cancell that notice the page displays.
I hope that now I am back to Normal (whatever that is) I hope to be able to get my mails regulary

Overall I like Yahoo Beta, but I’ve been having problems logging in to check my emails recently. I can log into Yahoo, so for example on the front page I can scan over the emails in my inbox but then when I try and log in….it just doesn’t get there. Until recently it’s been coming up with an error message that has as least given me the option to check mail in Yahoo Classic but now I can’t even do that. I’ve tried clearing the history, temporary files etc. but still nothing’s happening. Any suggestions? This is driving me mad!
October 14th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Anyone else have this problem? Its very strange it lets me log-in to Mail then goes to a white screen -acts as if its loading but never comes. I can get into My yahoo and account manager but not Mail.
Been doing it since about 24 hours ago or more and Ive cleared al lthe cache etc etc allowed things still no joy!
Weird thing is I can get in no problem at work (where they have superfast connection DSL?
October 15th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
I have been having problems with two of my three Yahoo! accounts since yesterday whereby Webmail access invariably returns either Error Code 5 or 6 and connectivity via Outlook Express eithers hangs or drops with the following dialog:-
“Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: ‘Yahoo’, Server: ‘pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk’, Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F”
An explanation or Service Status update would be appreciated …

October 17th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
My yahoo mail is taking an age to load, I use Mozilla, is there a problem with this? all other sites work quickly only Yahoo mail has a problem. Yhis has been happening for several weeks.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I’ve been unable to sign in to my mail for a week. Since your website was soooo painstakingly slow and I felt my details were “suspended” for ever on your signing in page, I changed my password. It’s been a while now and I still can’t sign in. Why are my ID and password rejected? I verified my identity but all to no avail. Can you fix it finally?
October 20th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Looks like this is a common occurence. Over this weekend have had real problems accessing my yahoo mail account and myyahoo page.
Seems to be ok this morning though but I’m interested in knowing why the problem occured in the first place.
October 20th, 2008 at 11:59 am
About a week ago I had difficulty for a few days trying to access my email page. My other email provider accounts were fine, but my yahoo one was either not opening, or displaying the emails in my inbox but not opening them. After a couple of days, i thought maybe a virus had attached itself to an email, even though my virus protection is updated regularly through-out the day, so to be safe i deleted every email in my This seems to have sorted itself out by about friday. Then on sunday i was expecting at least 4 emails, but nothing… Still nothing at 9am this morning, yet i have just checked again and i have 10 emails, 9 from sunday. Is there some problem at the moment?
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:43 am
Hi
I keep trying to get into my email, but every time I sign in the sign in page just re-loads.
It is nothing to do with my password or anything like that – no errors – the page just reloads every time I try to sign on.
It’s so frustrating… Have looked at all the subjects on the mail help page but nothing covers it – what can it be?
AND yahoo keeps being REALLY slow to load – everything else is fine – just Yahoo – I just don’t understand it.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

I have been having difficulties login in to Yahoo mail in the last week. The problem seems to be worst in the evenings. it looks like some kind of maintenance work is going on..any idea when this can be fixed??
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I’ve had the exact same problem… it’s lasted the past week or so and still no sign of improvement…. help!
I’ve tried logging on to yahoo at my local David Lloyd health club this morning and it was fine, but when I tried it at home it stops loading whilst trying to logon. Yahoo Mail is the only site with this problem. I’ve tried logging on at different hours, different days, etc….
Anyone able to fix this? If a Yahoo administrator is reading, please contact me on xxxxx (my alt).
Thanks!

Hi Jason,
Are you a Virgin Media customer? That could be the reason that you can login from your health club, but not at home.
Thanks,
Andrew – Yahoo! Mail Team

Like many others, I suddenly have difficulties in accessing Yahoo mail. I come in through my IE7 browser. All I get is a blank screen, with the status message “waiting on (your server)”. Last night I waited 15 minutes while it hung, in the end I closed in disgust. I cannot keep going with this sort of performance, what is going on?
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Thanks for the update, I now know where to go for help.

Thanks for the update Mail Team. it’s a great relief, I hope this sorts out the progress bar otherwise it’s good by vista.
Thanks

Hi, thanks for the Virgin Media info. I’ve had the hanging problem at home for a couple of weeks now. Contacted Yahoo via the instant chat function – the rep said she’d have to escalate the problem to engineer and I’d be contacted via an alternative email, but I never heard back. My question is, if I ring Virgin (not had chance yet) with the reference code, will they be able to fix this, or is it a problem at Yahoo’s end? Has anyone else rung Virgin and had this issue resolved? Sorry if I sound cynical but a bit more info on exactly what the problem is would be very welcome if possible. Thanks again though.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Email loading but my search functionality is gone. Searches for old emails come back with no results and I have to scroll manually to find them.

I thought it was just my pc. this has been gone on for ages, is it sabotage by the virgin empire?
makes me all the more determined not to use it as my default.
October 26th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
I have paid for “Mail Plus” principally to be able to send/receive larger attachments but the performance is very disappointing. Some e-mails have taken 4 days to arrive into my account. I used to have the free “BT Yahoo” system which was much quicker (although unlikely to be thanks to BT).
Why is teh Mail Plus so slow?
October 27th, 2008 at 12:27 am
No, it’s not a few Virgin media customers! and no, things are not back to normal, they are terrible. Look at the comments. It has been more like 2 weeks for me, and still gettng only occasional connectivity (better than last week – i now get mail to respond about 1 time in 3, last week it was maybe once a day i could get through, despite repeated tries.) I am a BT customer, all else on the internet is working fine
October 27th, 2008 at 12:28 am
It is only the mail. All other yahoo sites seem ok
October 28th, 2008 at 7:27 am
And answer me this – can someone explain to me the point of being able to use Address guard when if I try and use my address guard address in Yahoo I get “Oops – this is not an email address’ messages’
Why does Yahoo have to use such immature cutesy error messages – are we all supposed to be pre-school.
October 28th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Thanks for the update once again, it’s great you are working with Virgin, they were great when I called them, and were working hard on the problem.
Yesturday though, My progress bar started slowing up again, taking 5 minutes to click on a page, then again 5 minutes to the next link, then again. just to download a document.just an hour earlier, ithe same link worked perfectly also a regular site was not accesible all day but today its fine, having sparodic problems like this regularly. I’m sure it’s the pop up blacker, as sometimes it allowssites, and clicking on pages within the site
