Flash in my YMail?

There have been some questions about how updating your Flash could have anything to do with inputting text for your messages. In fact Flash doesn’t play a role in text input, but it does touch on some other aspects of the All-New Yahoo! Mail. Most notable would be the Chat/Messenger feature (which has been around for a while), but there are some other components too. Some existing and some new stuff.
So while we have no intention of changing Mail to some sort of Flash based tool, we’ve also found that some users can improve the experience and resolve some bugs we’ve discovered by upgrading to the latest Flash version.
We fully intend that anything we add or change in no way conflicts with the core functions of Mail (inputting text would be an example) and our engineers are working to resolve it. However, I also wanted people to know that updating Flash could improve it that much faster.
Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Ryan,
I posted a comment earlier asking if you could let us know the status of a feature request- you said if it was small you might be able to. Sooo, any plans for a yahoo mail stock ticker in the works?
September 26th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Hi Steve,
Sorry about not responding sooner. I’m passing along the request but don’t have any sort of promise or ETA. On a brighter note, if you check out Jerry’s video from CES you can see the types of possibilities that we may have in the future…once Mail opens up to developers.

Any idea when this “open mail” will be available?
September 29th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Steve,
Can’t give any details on that right now, but rest assured that I’ll be here touting it as soon as I can.

I cannot get my mail, and I have signed in several times! I have gone through the process several times. I would just like to leave the new system and go back to old way.

Yahoo chat, built into their “new” email, was working fine until I got “the message” to update my Flash Player. It would not let me continue until I downloaded updated version which I did (Flash Player 10). Now, Yahoo chat don’t work no mo’. Wh’sup?! Someone PLEASE. And is this the place to beto find such a fix? Thanks!
October 20th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Well I got 3 emails from Yahoo Customer Service, and they said they have the engineering team working on it, not sure when it fixed yet
October 21st, 2008 at 7:24 am
Did you ever get a fix to this? I am having the same problem!
October 21st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Has anyone gotten an answer as to how to solve this problem? I am getting the same message and have the same problem.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:56 am
The chat problem mentioned above seems to be fixed today – - nothing I had to do to fix it – - it is just back working today – - so thank you Yahoo for getting us back up and going – mike1967@rocketmail.com
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Mine still doesn’t work – not sure Yahoo fixed anything. I have used chat forever and have never had a problem until I upgraded to Flash 10.
October 25th, 2008 at 6:21 am
Same problem here. On the phone and online chat with ATT to resolve the issue and nada. Glad to hear I’m not the only one having the problem, but wish it were fixed. Really prefer this chat feature to messenger. Wish I had never upgraded to Flash 10. At least it seems they are working on it?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Still having this same problem that everyone else has. Computer at home is fine so far..was never prompted to update. Computer at work will not load chat. I tried to download the update but can’t. Looks like it wouldn’t have done any good even if the download worked.
November 2nd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
i had the same problems with Yahoo chat email i just removed Flash Player 10 and installed older verision 9 and im in mail works again !!!
November 6th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Hey deugene. Where did you find Flash 9? Been looking for it and can only find version 10. If you could let me know that would be great.
November 11th, 2008 at 9:33 am
I also would like to know where version 9 is. email me at janicehill17@att.net
October 26th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I have the same prob;em and it’s driving me crazy.
October 28th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Yah – SAME problem for me. I can access it on my desktop computer, and on my laptop I could too up until a few days ago. It wont get past the I need to download FLASH to access!!! VERY VERY VERY FRUSTRATING!! I can see I am not the only one. WHY havent Yahoo fixed the problem??!!
October 29th, 2008 at 11:18 am
I am having the same problem with the chat not working. I ahve upgraded the Flash and it still won’t work. Any word on how to fix this?
November 12th, 2008 at 6:55 am
have you found a solution yet? This is maddening? If so, email me at janicehill17@att.net.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:56 am
Well after MANY calls to both ATT and Yahoo I finally got someone in second tier support who sent my problem to Yahoo and guess what. It’s real. Like we couldn’t have told them that. According to them it is a known problem that the engineers are working on. I got a Yahoo problem ID from the second tier guy and will be notified when it’s fixed. I just wish there was better communication betweent he support folks so when you called they didn’t treat you like you had antlers. Be persistent. I will post when I receive the fix notice.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Well the problem is fixed. I just tried it out. Apparently chat wasn’t compatible with Flash 10. The engineers fixedit wo you all should be able to use chat again in the mail program.
October 29th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
same thing has happen to me
October 30th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Ditto.
So, what is the fix? This has to be affecting hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Yahoo Mail users. It does appear to be a Firefox-specific problem.
October 30th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
EXACTLY what I say, has it been fixed, NO! Get with it Yahoo people. This is pissing people off, there is an obvious problem! Who is this Ryan guy, isnt he the source??!
FIX it Yahoo – come on!! It is indeed affecting WAY TOO MANY OF US!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Ryan, thanks for the update and keeping us all informed as to what goes on w/ our YMail.
Off subject: Any news on if/when IMAP might be implemented?
September 26th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
John,
Your only options right now are the Zimbra Desktop Client and the iPhone, but we are looking very closely at our systems and evaluating what other options would be possible.
Unfortunately I don’t have any more detail than that right now.
-Ryan
September 27th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
That’s cool, thanks for the info man. This blog rocks!
September 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
I hope that one of those options is Apple Mail…
Zimbra is not well integrated into OS X at all… and that’s the whole point of having a Mac
I can’t understand why you’ve limited the clients to iPhone and Zimbra… doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
October 30th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Ryan
I hope that you are the starting point on the Yahoo Chat problem that MANY people from what I can see starts with you to get answers. Has anyone looked into the issue of not being able to access Yahoo chat without installing Flash! Looks like the problem started recently. Please let me know and ALLL these people having the same exact problem know what is going on and what Yahoo is doing to correct the problem. With the amount of people having an issue, I would hope that someone is already working on this problem and gets it resolved right away. You can only read the frustration in everyone’s comments. I am VERY frustrated.. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
October 30th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Is this to Ryan!!??? Becuase you need to do something to help out all us Yahoo users. There is a problem going around and nobody has sent us info that there is a problem or that someone is working on it. Talk to us, let us know what is going on Pleeeeze!
November 12th, 2008 at 6:57 am
I NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION TO MY CHAT NOT WORKING SINCE I UPDATED MY FLASH TO 10. THIS IS FRUSTRATING AT THE VERY LEAST!
LET’S GO, YAHOO! LET’S GET IT FIXED!
September 26th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
My yahoo used to ‘auto fill’ my addresses from my contacts as soon as I started typing someone’s name. This function no longer works for me and I have to open up my address book and insert address everytime. Do you know why this happens and how I can fix it? Without the auto fill working for inputting my addresses – emails take too long to add contact to.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Annette,
It might be a bug. Can you email me at ymailblog1[at]yahoo.com with your browser type and version, and what type of Yahoo! Mail you use?

Hi Ryan,
I’m using internet explorer as my browser. I’ve got Rogers high speed internet and I’ve also got Norton protection from Rogers. When I start up my computer I get a box which shows Internet Explorer System 32 ???? Not sure what else it says. Would have to shut down and re-start in order to see it.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
I was wondering why with the latest version of MyYahoo! I can’t see the status of the Czech crown to American dollar on the currency converter module. Why is it on the older version I could check out whatever currency I wanted to and now I’m limited to the dollar, yen, euro and pound? I know I can go click on the convert button and check out other currencies on another page, but before it was much more convenient. This seems like a step backwards. Comments?

hi whats up and all around stranger
September 27th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Hey Ryan !
Thanks for the updates , but do you know any thing about Calendar ? Because I really love Y!Mail but the Calendar is too old , and that takes me to Windows Live Calendar Beta (which I don’t like ! ).
I hope your planning to update and merge it with the new Y!Mail
September 28th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Y!Mail does have a calendar strip along the bottom that I find very useful. It is called “calendar timeline” in the mail options.
September 28th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I love the calendar timeline!

Ryan,
When I send a text message from my Yahoo Mail Plus
account, the recipient must reply to an 8 digit number (ie. 924-665-01). Has this number been assigned to my account? Does it change? If so, can one be assigned?
I could not find any documentation that speaks to this.
Thanks,
Derrick

Has Yahoo tested with the Flash Player 10 RC release and to prepare for the upcoming Flash Player 10 final release?
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
If Yahoo engineers haven’t done it yet, please get started on it for whatever reason that Ymail needs to use Flash for.
Also has Yahoo engineers tested the upcoming Firefox 3.1 for Ymail compatability? After the Firefox 3 mess which took Yahoo forever to update Ymail to be compatible with Firefox 3, I don’t think anyone else want to see the same thing happening again.

Has Yahoo engineers tested Yahoo Mail with the upcoming Flash Player 10 plugin? I don’t know why Flash is even needed for Yahoo Mail, but please test and ensure it works with Flash Player 10 plugin which is at Release Candidate(RC) status atm.

This posting about checking Flash was made back in September. It is now October. Any chance ‘the engineers’ could get on with fixing the keystroke issue? Or am I better off using my gmail instead? C’mon, let’s get it sorted!
October 17th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Yahoo mail broken by Flash 10!
Seriously, it’s the easiest fix. Please update Yahoo mail to support Flash 10.
October 19th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I coudn’t find one reply on how to fix the Flash10+Ymail error.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:29 am

October 21st, 2008 at 11:20 am
I upgraded my Flash Player from 9.0.115 to 10.0.12.36 version, and since then my chat in yahoo mail is not working any more.
I sent e-mail to Yahoo, and got answer: “Our Engineering team is already working on the resolution now and we
intend to have it corrected as soon as possible.”
October 22nd, 2008 at 1:07 pm
I have 3 Yahoo accounts and 1 rocketmail account (same as Yahoo), the chat in the 1 rocketmail account and 1 of the Yahoo accounts works but my other 2 Yahoo accounts still say that I need to upgrade my Flash Player – - so things are only 50% fixed for me – mike1967@rocketmail.com
October 22nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I downloaded the “New upgrade of Flashplayer”. I’m having the same problem. I can open my mail, but I can not chat. I turned off my stickykeys, and everything. I just want to be able to chat…
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 am
Same problem here. After upgrading to Flash 10.0.., my Yahoo mail chat is not working. Please let me know if any one of you got a work around.
October 24th, 2008 at 8:06 am
The chat in Yahoo Mail started to work today, by itself, I didn’t do anything. I guess the stuff from Yahoo mail did some homework. :)
October 24th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I have the same problem as all of the ones listed above. In my new email ive sent several emails to ppl and they arent geting then Also a freiend tried to email me today but noooooooo Yahell isnt as hot as its cooked uo to be. IM tired of dealing with it as I know many That have the same problems. So , IM thinking about changing to gmail. Its faster and a lil more user friendly . But get this , the only email I do get is from Yahoo . Now that tells me that you ppl at Yahoo need to get ya stuff straight or you will be another low income website on the totem pole. Sincerely fed up !
October 28th, 2008 at 4:04 am
Am just stressed about my mail. i dont know why i cant access my inbox that its unavailable everytime i log in. it continues bringing error code 1 what could be the problem and what can i do? should i just abandon my mail but what about my emails in the inbox which i cant access now?
October 29th, 2008 at 10:21 am
I got the same problem in Chat in Yahoo Mail like most people here. I called the helpdesk and talked to a Tier 2 agent. She was having the same install the latest Flash Player error message when she tried to use the Chat feature using her own account. After putting me on hold for couple minutes, she told me that she went to the engineer and told them about the issue. I hope they fix this soon cause i really like that feature.
November 1st, 2008 at 6:55 am
Please fix the flash 10 problem, otherwise I have to work the whole day :-).
November 2nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I can’t get into any of my emails because I’m told to download the new Flash Player…I’ve done it…twelve times!!! Removed it, redownloaded it…still can’t check my email.
I’ve read through all of this, but there doesn’t seem to be any response at all…HELP!
November 4th, 2008 at 8:39 am
I’ve had the same problem with Flash 10 and Yahoo Messenger. I uninstalled Flash 10 and downloaded Flash 9 here: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/updaters/9/flash_player_update6_flash9.zip and it works for me! Now all I have to do is make sure Flash doesn’t try to automatically update.
November 8th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’m back up and running.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
I am considering GMail if this is not fixed soon.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:52 am
I agree- if someone doesnt get this problem fixed soon with the Yahoo chat/Flash issue, we just need to go somewhere else! This is insane! Way too many people have issues, fix it already! PLUS now as of yesterday, when opening yahoo mail, there are ADVERTISEMENTS ALL OVER MY SCREEN!!! VERY ANNOYING!! I dont need to see all that when all Im trying to do is read/send emails!! GET RID OF IT!!! Yahoo is really just not taking care of the people… what is going on!!??
December 8th, 2008 at 6:00 am
I don’t now
