Screencast: Use the Sign-In Seal to thwart fraudsters

First off I want to thank everyone who responded to last weeks polls. It was very interesting to learn how our breakdown of New and Classic users is (almost 2:1 in favor of New mail), that the vast majority are using either IE or Firefox on Windows XP, and that we have such a passionate group of Linux users. I do apologize again to the Linux fans out there. As a longtime Mac user myself I should be more sensitive to users who stray from the majority
. Thanks again for all of the great feedback, and I’ll be posting more polls soon!
For today’s post I wanted to accomplish a few things. Thank you for voting in the polls (check), refresh everyone on an important safety tip to foil fraudsters, and play with some fun software that I learned about at Blog World. Ok, that last one was really the one I was most excited about, but I’m glad I could fit in the other two. The Jing Project is the name of the site and it’s a great tool for grabbing visual content from your screen and sharing it with friends (it even features Flickr integration!).
Many of you have probably noticed that little folded down corner at the top right of the sign-in box. Well that is the Sign-In Seal, and this video will show you how it works.

As a Mac user, when can we other Mac users expect to see the new Mail for Safari?
January 23rd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I’m on dial-up (26.4k/s) so video can’t be downloaded within a week. Do you have a text version I can read?

Wish Jing Project supported Linux, but then I remembered that there many GNU programs on linux doing the same.
I am sure it is a cool and useful feature for Win guys too.

I am having problems with emails coming to me at yahoo getting bounced or others being told address doesn’t exsist. I have several accounts set up to send me my invoices to this address and don’t want to miss anything. Please help! Thanks…keep up the great work.

I’ve been exclusively using the Yahoo Mail Beta for a few years now. I didn’t really feel that I had any choice about upgrading, because of the new features it offered that were indispensable.
However, for about the first year or so, and continuing for a lesser degree afterward, I can’t really count how many times I not only had to rewrite emails from SCRATCH from memory, not once, but TWICE. This was the result of crashes in both IE and Firefox induced by Yahoo Mail – or mostly just Yahoo Mail itself freezing or crashing.
The biggest problem was the lack of AUTOSAVE. This wouldn’t have been a problem if autosave was implemented – just has GMail has done for about 2 1/2 years now! What is so difficult about implementing it?
The one other critical feature that completely vanished with Yahoo Mail Beta was Drafts being automatically moved to the Sent Folder upon being sent. I have about 3500 drafts, and have absolutely no idea which ones were actually sent and which NEVER were sent because of crashes. I can’t spend literally weeks of my life checking and comparing 3500 draft emails against the Sent Folder, and removing those that were sent to actually complete the hundreds that remained unsent because of crashes, let alone the ones that I never completed because I began to work on other emails, and lost track.
I need Yahoo to do this AUTOMATICALLY for me now, so I can get to work on this.
One other critical thing:
When a dialog pops up saying “Do you want to navigate away from this page?” or “You have an unsaved draft” the DEFAULT BUTTON IS “OK”. This situation can happen unitentionally for various reasons, including “typing too fast” on some occasions, which sometimes ENTERS THE CLOSE TAB HOTKEY WHICH CAN NEVER BE DISABLED. Any key in typeahead buffer automatically presses the default “OK” and you lose your unsent email. Why? The user is “punished” for actually typing emails too quickly. This is a SIMPLE UI CHANGE and not even a “bug fix”. I have an open ticket on this for about 5 months, and have never gotten any real response!
I’m m a paying Yahoo Mail Plus customer, and have been for several years now as well, longer than I’ve used Yahoo Mail Beta. This is real money I’m paying for this service, not free ad-supported email.
I’d have switched to Gmail altogether years ago if I found a way of preserving the “To:” field in my Sent folder, without having to forward all Yahoo emails to GMail. I want to preserve my valuable data of several years intact.
What is so hard in implementing AUTOSAVE and MARKING SENT DRAFTS as actually having been sent?
How hard it it to MAKE THE DEFAULT BUTTON FOR NAVIGATING AWAY FROM UNSAVED DRAFTS TO “CANCEL”?
I’m desperate about these issues. and these have cost me untold hours of my life to correct. If I charged per hour for the lost time I’ve experienced over the years, it would cost Yahoo over $10,000.
For now my recommendation for new and existing users is to quit Yahoo Mail while you have the chance and switch to GMail. Don’t let this happen to you!

Thanks for the security tip, it was a good reminder.

How does this help? The scammer just requests the “sealed” login page and displays it with different submit actions. Enhancing the scam.

not change my e-mail or use my old one. What’s up??

Why do you use a vote to determine what we like, can’t you simply see most of us reject the new system… or is that the point, find a why to make us believe the new system is better?!?
January 24th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Very cool tip to know Ryan! Thank you!

interesting to note that most of the comments were not positive about the “new Coke” version of Yahoo. Stick with “Classic”-it will save you having to get a new eyeglass prescription every year. My first experience with the new Yahoo made it impossible to respond to the only 2 items I tried to sell on Craigslist. I got the evil Error 999 message which never was resolved so I switched back. Yahoo acted like I was overloading their system with it’s canned response back saying I was using too much bandwidth? 2 items for sale on Craigslist? Huh?!@#%

Dr One-
If the bad guy uses the real yahoo login page, s/he doesn’t get
a) your password (or username)
b) your cookies (so they can’t pretend to be you)
The bad guys really want/need one of those.

There ya go… evidently, your new, like most news today, lacks considerably. I’m 50 years old so I could write novels on this subject over the years, but, the bottom line is quit focusing on the bottom line and build BETTER products. If the [added]pain outweighs the [added]pleasure, what’s the point. American adages use to be “do unto, others…”, “walk a mile in another’s shoes”, “it’s Ok to go out of your way to help another”, today it seems to be “never look beyond your own skin”, “if it’s good for you, it’s good for everyone”, “tell it to the hand”

The point is that the scammer can request YOUR login page and any “special” images and then display anything they want — including a login page which looks authentic. If they just use the whole yahoo page as is and insert their own form actions — then when the form is submitted the info goes to the scammer. This approach by yahoo may make you feel better but makes you less secure since you are lulled into believing it somehow helps.

I for one don”t use the new mail because it doesn’t allow forwarding of messages with full headers as the original mail does I find that when reporting abuse( which by the way is all to common on yahoo )this feature is very helpful in tracking the abuser.so I will keep using the old mail and if it is replaced by the new completely than I will just go elsewhere .

When I switch to Yahoo new mail, I get a zillion script errors. I switched to Netscape Connect,
(wmconnect) when I moved in Aug., as my ISP. I have a hard time getting to IE. Of course, my provider can’t help me. I don’t know what I need to do. Any suggestions?
Just please keep the CLASSIC, that’s all I can use.

Only when I want ATTACHMENT a pictuers sometime there is a problem, it’s working very SLOWLY.
January 26th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Wow, the result of your breakdown about the new mail is almost beyond belief. Somehow, 2:1 seems a stretch considering the tone of most of the responses. How about addressing and solving the various access issues? I tried the new
“improved”(?) mail on several occasions only to experience script errors and annoyance with the layout and text legibilty. After reading all the comments of the past few weeks I feel I was lucky to be able to switch back, and do not intend to push my luck again!! I think Yahoo! is seeing only what it wants to see! Something being “new” does not automatically mean “better”. “Classic” rules!
January 26th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
completely new to yahoo mail. using it for two weeks, and don’t know thie difference between the Classsic and the New Mail. remember being asked why I liked the Classic. I replied that it was plainer windows without all confusing pop ups. After a few days I find that I can’t open my email messages, without giving my user name and password three to five times.!!!!and tonight I cant get in at all. Have even uninstalled yahoo and reinstalled it over. Have changed passwords six times and changed email addresses in yahoo about three times. What gives??? Is it Yahoo on the blink ???
January 27th, 2008 at 2:59 am
Is anyone else having problems with the new yahoo mail? I have been using beta mail since I joined yahoo. It has suddenly stopped working – just hangs with a ‘loading mail’ message. I’m on XP Pro SP2 and I have not changed or upgraded anything on my laptop since well before this problem occurred. I am being forced to use yahoo classic which I don’t like. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

So when are we going to get the new yahoo calendar?? I need it work with my palm/htc mobile device and for it to be interactive with yahoo mail. I have asked numerous times but get no response! How about contacting and speaking to YOUR users!
January 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I must admit I have experianced a whole new field of problems I am now having with my emails, switched from Incredimail to Yahoo Xtra as all the promises indicated this was a great improved system, my comment “rubbish” lock up errors, uncontrolable spam. slow as, very disapointing after all the promises. Looking for a better provider.
January 29th, 2008 at 1:12 am
i’m having a hard time to access!!
January 29th, 2008 at 3:12 am
Ryan: I have posted several times about yahoo bouncing mail. I would appreciate at least a response or something that someone is either working on it or there is a possible fix for this. However, there are none from anyone at yahoo. You (yahoo) keeps postings about doing this or doing that…how about just fixing what is there first before trying to improve on it. Improving on a broken system…will just be an improved broken system. My last post was January 24.

Hi Ryan,
I do now appreciate the New Yahoo Mail… Thank you. But still have to swich to new sign in seal… anyhow… keep up the good work…Good luck.
I do appreciate your new photo, before I thought you’ve got facial palsy with the unsightly smirk on your face.

Dear Ryan,
I have been reading the comments that are posted and I agree with Ted Kandell about the compositon of messages. Is Yahoo going to address this issue or just ignore it? I have written to Yahoo about the problem I am having with Messenger and have not received any response. It seems Yahoo likes one-way communications; they want us to communicate with them, but they maintain stony silence. In case you’re interested (which I doubt) about my problem with Messenger, it is as follows. When I log on to the internet, I get a message (popup) from Messenger that I need to install an upgraded version. I downloaded it 3 times and each time ended with a Spanish version. I don’t speak or read Spanish, so it was of no use to me.
