Mail, Messenger, and now SMS … all in one place

It took a little longer than I had hoped, but through some trial and error (and a lot of screencast software testing) I have pulled together my first screencast demonstration. Hopefully the volume levels turned out OK, but if not be sure to let me know. Also feel free to list other demonstrations you would be interested in seeing.

In the brief demonstration you will see how the new SMS feature integrates seamlessly into the Mail and Messenger interface. My apologies on the blurry nature of the picture.

DOUBLE UPDATE: Big thanks to Ryan Kennedy for giving me the lowdown on uploading a larger file. Not only have I recorded the video again (a bit clearer and a lot louder), I now have a link to the original video capture (much larger image, and considerably clearer) that you can watch if you like. Check out the hi-res version here.

extremely low volume, inaudible => win xp; seamonkey 1.1.4

no matter .. i only have e-mail and chat options under the ‘compose’ button in Y! mail beta. Perhaps the service is being deployed incrementally, not to all Y! mail users at once and lack of sound isn’t really an issue given that most people don’t have the SMS option anyway?

Sounds like great idea … having SMS available as an option … but I do not see this in Yahoo Mail beta. How do I get the version of mail that has SMS option???

I too do not see nor know of anyone able to text from Yahoo yet. When will Yahoo reveal that it doesn’t have sms option installed?

The audio is very faint, and can hardly hear it. The screen you are demonstrating from is blurred and not clear. Keep trying!

I have been looking into this new tech for a few days now. Got this link in mail and have been waiting for yahoo to finish this to see what it will do. I have to tell you that I am so excited about this! For those of you who don’t get it yet you should check out this link. It explains what this all will mean for us who are doing online business. http://www.podcastandgrowrich.com/

Thanks Yahoo! ~PJ

If they could only get their basic email working properly. Any email delivered to me that is larger that 50k goes directly to the trash. I’ve had Yahoo technicians looking at it for months now, but don’t see the problem. Also have been completely incompetent at blocking spam. How many of you are getting emails that are dated in 2017 so they are at the top of your inbox?

Unless Yahoo allows forwarding as an attachment, I will not use the new system and switch to Gmail if necessary. When I get images or graphics in an email, they will often not be forwarded to others unless I forward as an attachment.
I also think the insert addresses (when composing) from the old Yahoo mail is much better than the small box that the new email offers but that isn’t the deal breaker.

Yahoo! keeps announcing wonderful bells and whistles — should get the basics right. Mail to me means sending serious messages (pictures included), redirecting mail (not simply forwarding), requesting a receipt… all things Eudora has been doing for years without bragging about it.

Ok, so why does your screen look so different from mine? You have a “New” button with email, chat and text. I have a “Compose” button with just email and chat..

Thanks for the feedback on the video. I’ve recorded it again and already replaced the hi-res version. The upload into Yahoo! Video is processing and hopefully the reduced size doesn’t result in similar blurriness.

If my screen looks different it is probably because your account has not been switched out of Beta. With 250 million users it is a fairly long process to switch all servers over, so we hope you will be switched soon.

I was about to say the same thing. The video itself says that if you still have “BETA” writter under Yahoo! Mail, then the SMS option is not available YET. Yahoo is currently in the process of upgrading the accounts. So if someone gets it, and you still haven’t, don’t panic, just wait..

I wonder, is this SMS option available in other countries?

Ryan, we understand the rollout is gonna take awhile, but damn, can’t Yahoo at least give its customers a specific (and accurate!) timeline by which all current Yahoo Mail account holders will have the option to use the updated version? Doesn’t seem that difficult to me…other web-based software developers do it all the time. If we just knew what to expect, we could deal with it. Instead, Yahoo cloaks itself in ambiguous promises and never gives us a straight answer. That tends to piss people off.

I think the big questions on everyone’s minds are when (approximately) should Yahoo! Mail users expect to be able to use the new mail and will we be able to insert smaller picture files into emails rather than send them as large attachments when the switch is finally completed? Any answers to these questions would be helpful. Thanks!
