The Yahoo! Header gets an update

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/CG.png Many of you have probably noticed that all around the Yahoo! network you are being greeted a little differently than you were before.  Gone is the Yahoo! ID (often shortened for space constraints) and it has been replaced with your first name.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Mongo.pngIt doesn’t stop there, because it is also home to a new menu that provides access to your Profile, Contacts, Applications, and Edit My Account options.

Sure the Contacts one isn’t that revolutionary if you are in your Mail account, but it will likely come in handy if you are out exploring another area of the Y! network.

All you need to do is mouse-over the area where your name is displayed (along with the arrow symbol) and the menu is revealed.

Just about everyone using Yahoo! Mail (Classic or the newer version) should already be seeing it there, as well as on your profiles pages, throughout  Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! News, and more.  Be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

Calling all Y!Mail users on the iPhone!

iphone1.pngBefore I go any further … of course that pun was intended! In keeping with a decidedly Apple theme this week, I thought this would be a good opportunity to probe some of you Apple focused readers.Since its launch last summer, much has been made of the iPhone’s Mail and Web browsing functions. While the device does offer an internet that “is not watered down”, many users still like having a streamlined version of their favorite sites. On the other hand some folks strenuously object to streamlining, believing that it is in fact a watering down of the internet.

I’ve enabled a somewhat streamlined version of the blog that will automatically load if you are on an iPhone, but I’m also interested in creating an even more iPhone styled version (like Macworld’s special iPhone Central site) that would be an optional interface. Take a look at the currently enabled version and let me know what you think.

Additionally, some users prefer to check Y!Mail through the browser interface, rather than the iPhone’s Mail application, and it would be very useful to get a feel for how many prefer each option.

In the interest of serving my readers, I want to make sure that I know about what you prefer. This brings me to the latest polling questions!

Reader Polls: Round 2 – More about who you are

polling_liam.jpgAfter the rousing success of the first bit of reader polling, I couldn’t wait come back and find out more about all of you. I couldn’t help but notice that one of the reader comments suggested that Yahoo! should already know which version you use, or other things like browser and operating systems. But since my readership isn’t quite 250 million (at least not yet, anyway) it behooves me to see how all of you compare to the overall Yahoo! Mail user base.

liam_old.jpgHopefully once I have a good grasp on who you are I can get into more product oriented questions … but until then please be patient. And for the record, I am only asking about age because so many reader comments reference “being old”. I think it would be nice to see what qualifies as “old”. Feel free to share your thoughts on how the poll questions could be better, or what you think future poll questions would be!

And if these don’t really work for you, stay tuned because soon I hope to find answers to the age old questions: “Paper or plastic?” and “Tastes great or less filling?”

Reader Poll: What Mail do you have, and how do you access it?

One of the other Community Managers around here recently turned me on to this great polling plugin that I can use on this blog … so partly because I love to try out new features, but also because I think it would be EXTREMELY helpful to know more about all of you and how you compare to the rest of the approximately 250 million Yahoo! Mail users, I’m kicking things off with three polls today. Feel free to share your thoughts on how the poll questions could be better, or what you think future poll questions would be!
