Keyboard Shortcuts – Part 2

Last week we took a look at some of the keyboard shortcuts available in the all-new Yahoo! Mail. We looked at the basics: opening and closing a message, composing and sending, etc. Today I wanted to dive a little deeper and look at some shortcuts that really make Yahoo! Mail great and you incredibly productive.

Moving messages with a single keystroke:
Do you use personal folders to keep your mailbox organized? Did you know that the numbers 1-9 on your keyboard correspond to the first 9 of your folders? So when you’re finished reading a message, just press the right number and off it goes. No need to click and drag.

Here are some other quick tips for moving messages:

  • You can see which number your folder is by clicking the ‘Move’ button at the top of your mailbox. Your folders are listed in numerical order
  • If you want to make it even easier, just rename your folders and put a number in front of the folder name (i.e. 1 Family, 2 Orders, etc).
  • If you like the idea of renaming folders use the F2 key to rename a folder
  • Finally, 0 (zero) moves a message from any folder back to the Inbox
  • We’ve stopped at 9. So if you want to move a message to the 10th folder in your list, you’ll have to grab that mouse.

Navigate your mailbox without a mouse:
One of the features that I think makes the new Yahoo! Mail so great is the ability to have multiple messages (tabs) open at the same time from right inside your mailbox. Using CTRL+] (that’s the right bracket key) will move from one tab to another (going from left to right). Need to go the other direction CTRL+[ (that’s the left bracket key).

No need to stop there. Hitting TAB will let your navigate all around your Mailbox. This time SHIFT+TAB sends you the other way around. Looking at your Inbox? Need to perform a search? Just hit SHIFT+TAB and your cursor goes into the search box. Type your query and hit Enter.

Just a reminder that the complete list of shortcuts can be found on our help site. And don’t forget you can always look at the tool-tips when you mouse over a link.

I hope you find these features as useful as I do. Every time I find that I have to use an email that isn’t Yahoo Mail (for testing purposes only, of course) I’m always disappointed when I can’t use my keyboard.

Hey Andrew — what happened to the old reply inline feature? This is a far superior way to answer a series of questions in a reply, but is it gone simply because we want Yahoo Mail to behave like Outlook?

I would like to be alerted to incoming emails. I would also like a particular sender emails to be forwarded to me from another email address with the permission of the person originally receiving email. Can you help me?

Great feature on the shortcuts and everything but are we going to get desktop imap any time this decade? Even if its just for paid accounts (which mine is) Im getting tired of my mobile phone (iphone) having better integration with my email than my mac.

Nice thing all these shortcuts but when are we gonna have the real features that a fine e-mail gives you.
You said you use sometimes other e-mail brands so you can see they all support IMAP and have larger attachment files more than just a 10MB and don’t have ads that disturb you reading the message you got, and this is all for free in those other e-mails.

Has the spam filter gone wonky? Why would mail titled “Sex Toys for Christians” ever show up in my inbox?

ANDREW
I notice YOU have a NICE GRAPHIC in your SIGNATURE. Did it ever occur to yahoo that the REST OF US who are PAYING for yahoo mail would like to be able to HAVE A GRAPHIC IN OUR SIGNATURE LINE?
This USED TO BE possible, but not anymore. Yahoo mail is falling further behind and so please TELL SOMEONE THAT YOUR CUSTOMERS WOULD LIKE FOR YAHOO TO START LISTENING TO THEM AGAIN.
Thank you
Braden

For God’s sake I am so tired of dragging and dropping the column widths to fit the page. Why can’t you make the column widths fluid like every other mail on the planet???!!! Or at least make it remember where you dropped them for next log on.

I have a widescreen monitor and all my mail is bunched up on the left side because your columns always reset to this side. I drag and drop to adust the column widths only to have them reset on my next login. I am serisouly getting ready to dump Yahoo for Gmail b/c of this.

Ah, there are ‘features coming soon’ with my AT&T Yahoo mail–that have been ‘coming soon’ for a couple years. “we’re still tweaking…’

Sorry- times up. What’s the deal? Two years?

Yahoo! Mail would be better without having to pay to remove all the ads (and some a incredibly gross) that invade the account. Also free mail forwarding would be nice. GMail does it and so does Hotmail. I don’t understand why Yahoo! users have to pay to recieve a service that many other providers offer for free.

Why can’t I open Yahoo Mail.
Why can’t I even sign out.
It has worked only for 3 hours on Sunday the 24th in the last two weeks. It shows I have over 200 messages in there at the moment.
Why should I pay for an upgrade, when the standard won’t woem

Since having Yahoo it will not let me into my email. It says it doesn’t recognize my account most of the time. I must admit it raises my blood pressure to the limit

Andrew, Isn’t there a better way to prevwnt spammers than Carnegie Mellons lessons on the alphbet!!!! This is not only childish but miserably time consuming when emailing and or replying to email. Why do I pay comcast to use MacAfee to also help out?
Maybe alittle spot lite action from CMU? A grat university yes, screwing up my email is not humorous.

Are you aware of that Ymail doesn’t work with the latest iteration of Google Chrome (3.0.182.2).

Thanks.

Warning, off-topic…

All these “connections” features and “Apps”… are well and good, but when are we going to see some of the more basic necessities, such as an automatic IM log for an archive record of IM’s?
