The Yahoo! Header gets an update

Many of you have probably noticed that all around the Yahoo! network you are being greeted a little differently than you were before. Gone is the Yahoo! ID (often shortened for space constraints) and it has been replaced with your first name.
It doesn’t stop there, because it is also home to a new menu that provides access to your Profile, Contacts, Applications, and Edit My Account options.
Sure the Contacts one isn’t that revolutionary if you are in your Mail account, but it will likely come in handy if you are out exploring another area of the Y! network.
All you need to do is mouse-over the area where your name is displayed (along with the arrow symbol) and the menu is revealed.
Just about everyone using Yahoo! Mail (Classic or the newer version) should already be seeing it there, as well as on your profiles pages, throughout Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! News, and more. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

Very interesting and helpful…. not just another boring email program. It makes it more fun when you have more options other than to send, reply etc. I really enjoy the new backgrounds soo cute and fun.
Keep up the good work yahoo!!!

Ryan…what’s the status on downloading email attachments. It’s been weeks and I still can not download attachments. This is getting very frustrating. Can you please post a status on this? Thanks.
December 1st, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Hi Ryan i know it doesnt really relate. But within the MyYahoo! RSS reader is it possible to forward a post by using your yahoo contacts.

Doesn’t look to bad from what i can see so far is always good to update isn’t it? MSN have just updated in box and their email and cites and they look good maybe it is time Yahoo updated theirs.

Hi Ryan,
From between the windmills: kudo’s for the over4all performance of Yahoo’s E-mail capabilities. It is a really big daily help in my work.
Couldn’t do without it anymore!

Well isn’t that fine and dandy!! NOT!!! You should worry more about getting the attachment problem fixed!!
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Regettably, the sound and video quality of Messenger have suffered with each “improvement”. When I started using Yahoo! Messenger in 2004, it’s quality was head and shoulders above MSN Messenger. Now I seldom use it because the sound and video quality is so inferior. You might want to pay more attention to the connection and audio quality of Yahoo Voice as well. It is rapidly going downhill as well.

i think the inprovment is great!
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I do not like the new mail which popped up today. The address book is arranged differently and to sent to c and cc you have to enter them each separately. Give me back the old one soon or I am going to change
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I think the 10 MB size on Email attachments should be increased to 4.7 GB; so that I & many others that give tech support via email can send larger files to facilitate helping “The Lost Sheep in the Herd”….
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Ah, again programmer resources have made a change no user asked for, while things that don’t work (such as forwarding full headers and elimination of duplicate entries in the auto-fill system) are not fixed. Good thing I’m not paying for this cruddy service.
December 2nd, 2008 at 4:53 pm
What I’d like to see is an improvemet on how my email works. I’m tired of having to hit “refresh” over and over to get a full screen, and wish rich text would work with “reply” and “reply all” instead of just “compose.” As for the error message that my java is disabled - no it isn’t.
December 3rd, 2008 at 7:01 am
I’ve been using Yahoo Mail since the 90s and I’ve about had enough. Seriously, where’s the IMAP support? I’ll even keep paying my Plus fees to get it. Can someone please flip the switch. I’d rather not migrate to Gmail, but I’m so tempted. And don’t suggest Zimbra, it’s buggy and not how I want my mail. Ryan, if it’s in beta somewhere I’d appreciate the hookup. Thanks.

Is Yahoo Mail down today? People have told me their emails to me have been bouncing back. I’m having trouble accessing the site, and when I can get in I can’t download attachments sent to me.
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Anybody know why downloading attachments, Word docs, images, etc., does not work?
Anybody else have this issue?
It has happened before, started working again, but now it’s back.
The “Getting File inofrmation” pop-up is blank and does not contain any data so the download (open or save) never completes.
I can forward the email to my Outlook (business email) and open the file no problem.
Anybody?
Thanks for your help.

December 4th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
how can u fix something that is not broken
December 3rd, 2008 at 5:09 pm
What a mess. Doesn’t Yahoo have anyone with brains. The advertising just got larger. The site when it comes up, looks like somthing that was laid out by a first grader.
December 11th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Fred I agree with you. the Width is to #*#++# wide and the Ads are the focal. Can’t get the blame emails …

You are so right yahoo is really messed up now, I have the old mail on my laptop it works so much better PLEASE give us back the old yahoo mai..beachlady
December 4th, 2008 at 3:05 am
Yeah, Who? Suspecting an email problem with forwarding, I’ve been sending test messages to my Yahoo! email address from Earthlink. Over the past 24 hours, not one has made it. The lack of a System Status page keeps us all guessing, and wasting time like this. I’ve about had it with the unreliable email, and thinking about moving my groups to Google too. Earthlink seems more reliable than Yahoo! but it has issues as well.
December 4th, 2008 at 3:57 am
What suddenly happened to Yahoo Mail on 3rd December? All was well with the old system right up until teatime on 3rd Dec (U.K. time) now unexplicably, it takes over 20 minutes to log-in, another 20 minutes to get the opening page up, another 20 minutes to show Inbox etc. etc. I’ve given up trying to open any emails. The format is all over the place and weird, the print HUGE and ridiculously amateurish (in fact it looks like a spam effort). It is verging on impossible to access or use. What has gone so horribly wrong, so suddenly? I just want my usual email service back, and the usual neat columns of message headers etc., plus of course, being able to click the mouse and get a result within seconds. That’s the way it was until 3rd December 2008. Anyone got any clues as to what is going on, or if it is being fixed?
December 4th, 2008 at 4:48 am
I’m in the UK- and I’m suffering like Carole. What’s going on? I keep getting error messages when I try to use my account on my computer. Strangely, everything’s fine if I use my friend’s computer. I’ve followed all the advice to delete caches and cookies… but still nothing. I’ve tried to discuss it with an advisor on Yahoo’s customer service (!) telephone number- but as soon as I mentioned my problem, I had the call terminated without any explanation!! I found plenty of evidence on-line that others are suffering too- but no explanations from Yahoo! What’s going on?
December 4th, 2008 at 5:27 am
Hi all…
I am having the same issues as Chris and others in that I have been unable to log into my Yahoo Mail account via the web since Wednesday, December 3. Having dealings in IT an knowing my way well around it I know it has nothing to do with the browser cache. Anyway not in my instant as it gets cleared every time the browser gets closed.
All those bells and whistles looks nice but they seem to cause issues, and this is not the first issue that I have had.
Could we please have an explanation? It would be nice. Thanks.
December 4th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Suggestion:
In “other” mail applications, if you forward AND reply to an email message, a “double arrow” icon appears in the status line, to show you performed both actions.
In Y! Webmail, it only shows the “reply” or “forward” arrow icon, whichever activity was most recently performed, not both. I think I just forwarded an email to someone twice, because I didn’t see the “forwarded” icon in the status line.
December 4th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Sorry, since I’m sure that folks worked hard on this, but it looks crowded and uninviting, with advertising leaping out. Guess I’ll continue to run My Yahoo! on Firefox.
December 4th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Can someone please tell us when we will be able to access Yahoo Mail again?
This is getting ridiculous, I am afraid to say, and one can not even get to the old version of the Yahoo Mail even though it claims the option id there. Come on folks. There are people who depend on Yahoo Mail, and not just for fun.
So far cannot comment on whether the new look is anything to write home about as I cannot get access to it, and that for over two full days by now. This is NOT good.
I have been a Yahoo Mail user for a fair number of years by now but the way things are going I do not think that I shall remain a user for much longer, seeing I cannot get to my account online to check, say, the spam mail folder, for, for some reason,. legitimate emails end un in there and spam gets through.
Can we have an update,m now, please as to when we can expect to have issues resolved. Also, may I remind folks of an old American adage: “If it ain’t broke - don’t fix it.” But it is broke now, it seems.
December 4th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Thanks - it is working now again finally. Was there supposed to be anything improved on the Y MAIL!? If so I am not seeing it.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
whene well they be changing it to live mail
January 27th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
The yahoo is ok and brilliant.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
I’ve just stumbled upon this blog while searching for info on the current Yahoo mail issues. This is rubbish. I pay for ‘Mail Plus’, and just need a reliable service. The community manager states “Gone is the Yahoo! ID.” Wrong. Gone is the functionality I pay for, i.e. a working mail service! My name, however, still displays as it always did. Nice one!
I wouldn’t kick-off if it was free, but I pay for it. Get a a proper test platform before you screw-up a working system. It’s not difficult.
I’m also surprised that the so-called ‘Community Manager’ doesn’t appear to have responded to any of these comments or complaints. This blog is a waste of bandwidth, and appears to exist purely to let Yahoo spew out their nonsense, while pretending to be in touch with their customers.
Anyone know if Hotmail do an add-free premium service yet?
December 4th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Can anyone tell me how to get an audio alert when I get a new e-mail? (I just have Yahool mail, not the fancier versions).
Thanks,
Debbie

Not only claustrophobic, but no (apparent) way to edit contents: Under “My Applications,” why would I want an access bar for “Horoscope” or “eBay,” and who thought I would?
December 4th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
On December 3, I was doing time-sensitive freelance work remotely for a new company. The night before, my client’s job-related messages took a long time to arrive and ended up in Spam. Suddenly, I couldn’t access my email, and must have seemed unresponsive. I was hired to turn things around quickly. I’m a Mail Plus customer, and a Yahoo user since the mid 90s but I am considering shifting my main account if this ever happens again.
I don’t feel like there’s been a clear answer re what happened.
I was happy with Yahoo, almost never use My Yahoo, but use Mail, Groups, News, Messenger. I’d rather not change.
December 4th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
It is great to work with yahoo!
December 4th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
When are those of us who pay for Yahoo! Mail Plus going to be able to use it again? Someone spoofed my email address and sent an email using my name and yahoo email address to an Adults only Yahoo Group to which I belong and the email had a long list of Adult Groups which I don’t approve of and would not ask my own Group members to join either.
December 4th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I have to raise an issue of substance and content. Aside from throwing a lot of fluff stuff , you do not seem to notice that by allowing the Fox News people to feed you their video productions, you are also allowing them to throw a lot of that network’s distorted view of the world at unsuspecting users of your portal.
It really hit me when i saw that vile merchant of hate Bill O’Reilly telling our president elect that he should make sure that the CIA continue its use of torture and not listen to the far left.
Excuse me but have you checked to see who won the last election. It is not FOX news or Bill O’Reilly or Rush Limbaugh but those of us who will not stand for more divisive talk and harangue.
If Yahoo wants to paint itself as the portal of the far right, then be honest about it and let us know and we will go elsewhere.
So either start monitoring what FOX foists on an unsuspecting public or better yet go to a different video sources altogether or ee fold leave your portal

Excellent comment (though the implication that Obama is really an antidote to what you criticize seems overly-optimistic — for that look to Ralph Nader).
December 4th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Its very funny to use it
December 5th, 2008 at 1:10 am
I agree w/ Wes & Opher. I’d rather see my Y! ID than my first name, in the header. I don’t benefit by having a computer greet me by name, but I do want to be able to see at a glance which account I’m logged into. Having to move my mouse around just to open a dropdown for that fundamental info is a bit insulting.
If you *really* want to make your greeting enhance our experience, and think that many people want a system that says their name, then at least give us the option to specify whether we’re greeted by name or Y! ID. It should take only one such option setting to apply to our header in all of your screens.
Thanks,
-rich

I am in the same boat. I use my yahoo for business and I need this up and running. I cannot reply of forward and when it logs in its going on and offline a half dozen times. Please fix asap. thanks - Brian
December 6th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Yes, but how do I now view FULL header diaplay information?
December 7th, 2008 at 7:11 am
Yes, the new, the new. What one also notices is that the top of the main Yahoo! page now more than ever focuses on the frivolous (celebrities, entertainment news, etc.), whereas the news of the world is out of sight and in a small font size (to show its relative insignificance to what’s new with Beyonce, I guess).
December 7th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Hi, Ryan,
Could the following problem be related to the new Yahoo! Header update?
Beginning a few days ago, advertisements have been permanently blocking the “Narrow Results” panel in my Yahoo! Mail when I use Firefox 3.
I don’t have this problem with IE, Opera, or Safari.
Thanks,
-rich
December 8th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Problem’s gone now.
Thanks for listening,
-rich
December 9th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Joke’s on me. The problem’s back. I guess nothing was fixed, you just had a break between ads.
Is anyone else having this problem?

January 20th, 2009 at 11:24 am
yahoo sux. when i set ‘yahoo asia’ as my prefered content i dun see this header change. BUT with asia as your prefered content, u get NO ads on the right. editing profile is so unorganised as well. yahoo needs better brains, for sure. user interface/navigation needs focus than eye candy. cmon.
January 21st, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Yahoo does not suck. I love how you can instant message.
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I have created an online seal twice, but when I try to sign on, the seal is gone. I need to know why this happens.
January 27th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Why does Yahoo charge $20 for POP access when it’s free in gmail and AOL?
February 11th, 2009 at 11:46 am
how has it worked for others
February 23rd, 2009 at 12:19 pm
why did you fix a problem that was a problem to anyone besides the staff at Yahoo? The old home page was fantastic and the best I had ever had. Now I am thinking seriously of changing services only they are following your lead and messing themselves up as you have. I have set up programs for two different companies and now that I am retired I depend on my home system for a lot of things. Everything ran fairly smoothly until you starting messing with something just needed a few isolated repairs. There was no need to mess up the entire system and make so many people wish they had never started with you. As soon as I find another group that isn’t following your lead i will switch to them unless you return to system that worked best for almost everyone. THE OLD ONE! NOT THIS MESS YOU HAVE CREATED FOR US NOW AND WITH NO CHOICE TO USE THIS MESS OR STAY WITH THE ONE WE HAD. That was a violation of our mental focus that said we don’t know what is best for us but you do and you are getting this wether you want it or not so we are giving you no choice. All i can say to you is “thanks for nothing”.
