Screencast: Ways to get to Yahoo! Mail

Despite my earlier efforts to share these visionary suggestions with screenshots, it seems that people continue to rely heavily on search engines to get to their Yahoo! Mail account. Now if you simply like that process, more power to you. But if you would like something with fewer steps, do I have the video for you. Please excuse the stuffiness of the voice over. Not only was my voice born for print media, I was fighting off some seasonal allergies.

I just type “mail.yahoo.com”, never had a problem.

Now, if only Yahoo could make Push e-mail work more consistantly… ;-)

I have had the New paid subscription of YaHoo’s New Mail. Personally I’m not @ all happy with it. If I had tried it on a Trail Offer first, I would not have Purchased it. To put it Simple, It’s to Cluttered !

William,

You can try hiding the Reading Pane to see less items in your screen, it will make the New Y! Mail to look almost like the Classic Mail. When the Reading Pane is hidden, you can open your messages by double clicking on the messages or just clicking on the subjects.

To toggle the Reading Pane you have to options:

quick option: use the keyboard shortcut ‘v’
normal option: go to the view menu on the top of your inbox, click on it and you will see the option “Reading Pane”.

good luck..

What’s not to be happy about? I’ve had Plus for a while now and it works great. My only gripe is that Push only works %50 of the time on my iPhone, but that’s not a Plus-only issue but an overall one.

However, considering I have/use Hotmail (Spam), Gmail (University), and of course Yahoo (Primary/Personal), there’s a world of difference between all of them. For instance, I still use Y!Mail exclusively as my primary account because it has unlimited space, Push for iPhone, and a gorgeous (Zimbra-ish) interface compared to Gmail or Hotmail. My university uses Google Apps, so everybody has a campus Gmail account; it works well and I like the IMAP support, but no Push or folders. I know Gmail uses tags, but I prefer folders instead.

Hotmail is just abysmal, but b/c I have an Xbox Live account it’s part of the territory. Hotmail only gives you 5GB, and only allows push if you have a Windows Mobile device. If you can figure how to upgrade a Hotmail account to Hotmail Plus, please let me know…I’ve yet to find a way to do it unless you activate it as a Plus account. They just turned on POP access for Hotmail accounts, but you can use their stupid Outlook Connector to access Hotmail if you have/use Outlook 2007. I only use the account for mailing lists and other crap…

All in all, I’ve yet to really find anything lacking in Yahoo except IMAP support; however, considering the account is truly Unlimited, I don’t want to sync EVERY single folder/piece of e-mail in my box with my desktop….in my case, that could take a while.

Anyway, sorry for the novel but I get sick of people saying, “Oh I hate Yahoo” without a “because” after it. I don’t hate any company, but I certainly do like some more than others… Perhaps something like, “Oh I hate Yahoo because they use that silly mascot.” Ok, I get that…at least it’s an opinion with a reason attached to it.

Yeah, I use to pay for premium too… Came time to renew and Yahoo’s account services were messed up once again and so membership lapsed. Found that GMail offers everything Yahoo Premium does, plus it’ll allow me to use my own domain name, for free. Unless Google goes to the dogs I’ll never consider paying for Yahoo again.

Gmail and Y!Mail are not exactly the same; Gmail offers no Push for iPhone or Blackberry, and it’s not unlimited storage.

My biggest concern with Google is that Gmail will aggregate the content of your e-mail for marketing links–they don’t have humans reading it, but humans designed it, and humans can abuse it.

How about just keying ymail.com? W/ Chrome, I don’t even have to key in the whole thing, the browser autocompletes for me.

It boggles the mind – maybe too many brains scrambled by too many walkmans and that never learned how to THINK …. they use a SEARCH engine to find their mail (!?) but if they have a question about anything that they SHOULD use a search engine for, they post a question either to a group or to Y-answers – “Has anyone ever heard of [name]?” I shake my head in disbelief wondering how they manage anything else.

I know it sounds crazy to some of you, but everyone familiarized themselves with the web in their own unique way.

For every person who knows they can have a browser auto complete an address after only typing the domain, there are a ton of folks who find everything from a search.

If I’m already on my keyboard I usually type “YMail.com” and hit enter. If I have a hand on mouse I will usually right-click the bookmark in my browser toolbar. Why a new tab, you ask? Because I’m always worried I might want to come back ;)

Ryan–came across this by accident, but I don’t understand–it looks like you’re still going through two or three steps–I used to be able to access my yahoo mail just by clicking on mail on my yahoo home page–then without explanation it suddenly changed and it now looks like that page you showed where I have to sign in and give my password every time I want to look at mail–what a pain! Also, the one time I used yahoo mail stationery (around Halloween) all my friends complained that my e-mails were in Greek language! What happened there?

Gail,

The demo outlines the steps to setup shortcuts that will typically get you to Yahoo! Mail in a single click/step.

If you have recently signed in to MyY you shouldn’t be asked to enter the password again when you bounce over to Mail. I’ll check into it.

You can also bookmark Yahoo! Mail in your favorites list. That requires an extra mouse step when getting to your mail but it’s also quicker than searching or typing in yahoo.com in the address box.

I took the toolbar idea a little further and made a toolbar button that takes me directly to my inbox rather than my Yahoo! Mail page. You can do the same thing in your bookmarks/favorites list. It eliminates an extra step if you prefer to go straight to your inbox first.

I would gently scold you because your sign-in seal is absent but maybe you took it off before you created the video so no one would know what yours is. :)

Thanks for the video.

Well, there are 3 of us who uses 1 computer and only I can get into my mail and whatever else I want to get into. The deal is everytime my other 2 Family members try to go to their emails it kicks them right back to my email sign up, even AFTER I have signed out. I am the primary user of this computer and just a while ago, my sister and my dad tried to go to their emails and could not get to them and also for some reason, my sisters email is in my account as a alternate email address. Is it assumed that just because 3 different emails are on 1 computer they ALL belong to the same person? My dad and sister uses the same password on their accounts, I don’t. Before we had no problem just going where ever we wanted to go on our Computer and now we do, my dad can’t even get to his to see if my Uncle who IS IN IRAQ has sent him any emails because of this and yes I have contacted costomer service and all they did was seed us to the links that do not answer our questions. Sorry to sound grumpy about this, but we are a bit agitated about this and I do not have my PC set up as 3 different section as sing in on my computer cause we don’t want to deal with that. We just want to just turn on the PC and log on simple as that, but it isn’t simple as that anymore, so, what to do on this kind of issue?

Im unable to view the left hand context menu in my address book, which gives options for viewing catagorys.
Ive already emailed yahoo email help about my problem and the answer Im sent is always the same; “make my font size smaller or change the resolution of my monitor.
However, I cant do this because of my poor vision.
There isnt a slider at the bottom of the address book page, where I could slide it to the left to see the whole page. I wish there was one so I could view the left hand menu and get to my catagorys that I need to edit!!!!
Is there any way to view address book and edit it?

Please help!

This questions is directed to Ryan Knight or anyone who is very savvy with the internet process.

I have a question and am not sure if this is the place to address it. I have a Yahoo email account in which I have a list of contacts having various email accounts – such as sbcglobal, gmail, aol etc. When I logon onto my Yahoo account I see under “Online” from time to time one or two of my contacts. How does this work? Are they really online?
Does this mean they are online anywhere?

I am curious as I have a friend who claims she is not online when I see her name pop up under “All Feeds” – “Online.” If I try sending an email I receive a bounce back. What am I missing here? Thanks.

Why, btw as long as you’re “fixing” things (ha!) do we have to click through 3 screens to open an attachment and why can’t you have auto-delete of your inbox and sent messages? Say, delete anything older than 6 months automatically?

(Possible duplicate entry. Received error last time.)

You missed settting Y! Mail as the default email application. This allows the user to use any existing links, icons or keyboard “hot buttons” to access Y! Mail.

Also setting Y! Mail as one of the home page tabs. I add Y! Mail as one of the pages that load when I open my browser, and it just stays in the background. Since the “Unread Count” appears in the tab title, all I have to do is glance up at that tab to see if I have any new email.

I sent off a help message today (using my other e-mail account) and was totally frustrated when I did not get an answer but was directed to this site to look for my own answer. Well from what I see I’m not the only one with the problem and I don’t see an answer. I would have felt better if I was told ‘thanks for letting us know about the problem and we are workign on it’. vs. having to look through these posting myself to see that there is yet to be a solution. I hope this gets fixed fast.

Service has largely deteriorated over the last few months. Pretty disappointing situation for long-term users. I’m sure if the Microsoft acquisition would have occurred, we would all be rolled over to the MS Network. Not a bad idea now because at least I could then ACCESS MY MAIL!!

I’ve been a long time user of Yahoo mail (10 years if not more) and have always been able to access my mail through OE or, my personal preference, Incredimail. Now, that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s mine and a lot of friends’ choice too. Why is it, that for the past couple of weeks or more, we keep getting emails coming through in some weird format etc? Despite being in ‘constant’ contact with people at Yahoo, nothing is getting resolved and because I’ve lost out on receiving several very important messages, I had no choice but to cancel my Mail Plus service, until this gets sorted.

I have been using Yahoo Mail Beta for a while now and love it. However, lately I’ve had a problem with my font (which is set to Verdana 10 pt) defaulting back to 8 pt. And when I change all of the text in the email message back to 10 pt and send the email arrives at 14 pt.

This all seemed to start (or it may be coincidental) when I added a hyperlink (to my linkedin page) in my signature.

I’ve since removed the link but still have the same issue.

HELP or I’m going to have to give up on Beta.
