Mail Basics Workshop transcript (and new Workshops page)

Once again we’d like to thank everyone who submitted questions, and who stopped by to participate, during last week’s Mail Basics Workshop (transcript here). If you missed it, I was joined by Chris (Product Manager for All-New Mail), Carl (Customer Experience, referenced here), Maryn (liaison between the Mail team and Mail Customer Care), Melissa (Messenger twitterer and blogger), and some others who popped in and out during the hour … and we all chipped in to answer user questions.

We received a lot of great questions, and the staffers really enjoyed the opportunity to hear directly from the users. Below is a sample of one of the questions, but there were a lot more:

peteyboyyyy: First off, I LOVE Yahoo! But I always see these weird flag things in my inbox. What do the backwards arrow, forward arrow, and flag icons mean?
YMailTeam: They’re there to show you what messages you’ve replied to (backwards arrow), what messages you’ve forwarded (forward arrow), and what messages you’ve flagged for follow-up.
YMailTeam: To flag a message, click the message you’d like to flag. Find the “More actions” button above the main Yahoo! mail window. Click it and select “flag for follow-up.” It’s as easy as that!

And now that we have completed our second workshop, I’m creating a Workshops page.  There you will be able to easily access transcripts from all previous Workshops, but also see if any other Workshops are scheduled in the near future.

Check out the transcript for the Mail Basics Workshop here, and keep an eye on the Workshops page for other transcripts and news.

Any hope of the stock ticker tape from the yahoo finance quotes pages being implemented on the yahoo! mail “home” tab?

Also, it would be nice to see the address book launch in a new tab, rather than loading in the tab of the current folder. I’d like the option to toggle between inbox and address book without having to wait for the load each time. thanks!

I think this would be a good feature too. Generally when people go online for info, they want email, news, weather, or stock info. Why is it that only 3 of these 4 things are available in yahoo mail?

Would be good if Yahoo got their act together concerning the issues on the new version. In other words for the last 24 hours it hasn’t worked! No comments from Yahoo anywhere concerning the problem!

Random question: Does anyone think Yahoo is biased toward a particular political party/philosophy? If so, which way do you think it leans?

HELLO JAYBORG, I HOPE NOT BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A HARD TIGHT WORLD RIGHT NOW. I’M JUST COMMENTING ON YOUR POLITICAL SUBJECT ABOUT BEING BIAS. SPEAKING OF BIAS I HOPE PEOPLE ARE VOTING FOR A GOOD PRESIDENT TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY AND NOT JUST OUR COLOR. AND IN OPINION I HOPE THEY BOTH SERVE WELL AS A PRESIDENT.

Not crazy about a new feature introduced this week: The “Resume Session” feature.

If you haven’t been subjected to it yet, unless you use the “Sign Out” link on the Y! Mail console to leave the session (i.e. you just navigate away, or just close your browser…which probably constitutes 99% of us out there), you get an annoying pop-up box when you return:

“Your session was discontinued. Would you like to A) Resume Session, or B) Start New Session?” When you click on the “Don’t show me this question again” box, you’ll still get annoyed with that box again. Meaning the “Don’t show this again” option does absolutely nothing.

Different opinion. I like that new resume session feature that has been popping up lately. It has been a lifesaver when my browser crashes. I can resume my session and everything I’ve typed is right where I left it.

I agree its a good feature, but I also agree if you check it not to ask again it shouldn’t ask again (much like the ad on the right side of the inbox). When you click to not ask again when expanding the inbox to the far right, the box still pops up next time you log in.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the report. I’ll make sure the team knows that the “don’t show again” option isn’t working properly.

[...] week Yahoo had another online workshop with the mail folks. They have published a transcript of the talk. I was at the talk and there were only a couple spam related questions. [...]

Whenever any forwards an e-mail with attached pictures to me, the pictures are duplicated. I try to clean them up by deleting the duplicates, removing etc., but very frequently on the forwarded e-mail, they are multiplied, sometimes as much as 10 times. If you have 10 pictures multiplied 10 times, it sure fouls the system. What causes it and what do I do? Thank you.

I get a lot of business emails into my inbox. I would like to have an option that allows me to save them in a folder on my personal computer. How about an option that will allow you to save an email to a directory on your PC or notebook. This would be VERY helpful.

Thanks

What happened to the access to RSS feeds from the mail page? I get an 403 (forbidden) error when trying to expand the list. I’ve read that yahoo has removed the service. If that is the case why leave the icons on the mail page? And, why remove it without warning or explanation?

I don’t understand why they moved the functionality at all. I thought it was really useful. I don’t want to use my yahoo at all.

Ryan:
–If we elect not to post a photo or avatar, why can’t we get rid of those ugly default blockheads?
–Can you please ditch the dumb, Yahoo! engineered comments that often pop up in chat, while your contact is typing? These contrived comments are not only dumb, but can be entirely inappropriate at times, too.
–How about coming up with a way to reduce (as opposed to minimize) the chat screen, a la Gmail’s chat?

Thanks!

I have two questions concerning email

1st when sending emails is there any way to add words to the dictionary so they are not considered incorrect by the spellchecker such as my last name and my address Brookline

2nd question on the new mail I am not able to separate my email addresses into catergories such as persona., professiona. commercial etc. I can do this in the old mail and this is the main reason I am not switching

thank you

On October 23rd asked for help with my inbox, sofar NOTHING, and the problem still exists: Some E-mails NEVER arrive (always from the same person, who hasn’t any troubles elsewhere!) What can I do, and/or who is “sitting on my line and editing”??
Please help me, I’m hearing impaired and very much depending on E-mails!!
Thanks.

When you go into Yahoo Mail you get a brief listing of news events.

Is there a way to change that?

Or at the very least change the news source to like your favorite blog or some other RSS source?

It’s extremely frustrating to have incoming emails deleted as soon as I’ve read them. Many of them are important and I DO need to keep them. I took a while working out how to save them. Then I had trouble sending emails OUT from Outlook Express too, very very annoying, but fixed now, thank goodness, so I will use OE in future. It never deletes messages itself, the layout is very clear and easy to follow. I’ll try My Yahoo to see what it’s like, and for the news etc, but having adverts jumping about is SO irritating! Even when I’ve deleted them, they soon come back.
Hope your new site is more user-friendly.

How many &*%$# pages do we have to click through just to get to our inbox?! Make yahoo mail simple or I’m switching to Microsoft.

And, BTW yahoo mobile Go is another bloated time-waster as well.

I’ve been looking at Zimbra mail and understand the new yahoo email is based upon it. The feature set for Zimbra is fantastic!! It would be nice if the full set of Zimbra features where made available. Now that would be a winner!! I’d even pay for that (do now as I have a mailplus acount).

Thanks,

-PL
