It’s the Calendar you’ve been waiting for!

It is with much excitement (and much relief because I can stop ducking the questions) that I can share with you the news about our All-New Yahoo! Calendar.
You’ve been asking (a lot) and I’ve been rather coy, but now you know why. Yahoos have had a chance to play with it for a few months now, and I’m very comfortable telling you (and all of my friends) that it is worth the wait.
Granted many of you may be wondering why an online calendar is that big a deal. After all, despite the fact that most web-based mail services have integrated calendars, adoption has remained somewhat low (by comparison). We think that is going to change, and here’s why:
- Open standards like iCalendar and CalDAV make all calendars work together so people can share their schedules online without the hiccups of the past.
- Broadband and mobile device ubiquity means you’re always connected, even if you don’t like to admit it. You need your busy life to be in order and follow you wherever you go.
- Web 2.0 technologies have made it possible to incorporate very cool visual effects and practical functions like event discovery.
By leveraging some of the technology that the Zimbra team has brought to the table, and by working with many other groups in the online calendaring community, we have brought a lot of exciting stuff to the new Yahoo! Calendar. One of the components we deemed most critical was improving the ways for you to connect with your friends and family – even those who aren’t using Yahoo! Calendar. Our new Calendar is interoperable with the other popular services, including calendars from Apple, Microsoft, AOL, Mozilla, and Google.
Other bells and whistles include:
- Subscribe to any iCalendar-based public calendar and add upcoming events and show times to your Yahoo! Calendar. This means you’ll be able to plan for a local concert when your favorite band comes to town and you’ll know when the next new episode of 30 Rock will air.
- Personalize your Yahoo! Calendar with interesting photos from Flickr to make your online calendar as visually appealing as it is productive.
- Set email, IM or SMS reminders for important activities and never miss a birthday or anniversary again.
- Easily drag and drop events to reschedule appointments without having to refresh your Web page.
And this is really only the beginning. We are working on auto-sync capabilities with Outlook, options to download relevant calendars with ease (think sports teams, class schedules, etc.), and snazzy integration with many other Yahoo! properties.
So whether you were among those who have been eagerly awaiting news of an update, or are just someone curious about how useful an online calendar can be, you should head over to http://switch.calendar.yahoo.com and sign-up for the best Yahoo! Calendar we’ve ever offered. The early stages of the Beta are limited, so get on the waiting list now! If you want to take a look before you sign-up, or want our Calendar guru (Herbert) to show you around, check out the screencast below. We’ve also got a jumbo version if you’d like to view the video more clearly.

I’d love to try it, but it claims that it doesn’t support my language yet. Slightly worrying, since I use English! Could this be due to the fact that my Premium Mail account is provided through the BT Yahoo partnership? – I notice that my new webmail has never got the Messenger options either.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Sorry, we don’t support BT quite yet. Will be coming soon.
October 8th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I got thte same message – not yet available in my language…which is also English. But I am excited that it’s coming soon I had to use another calender that was more user friendly than the original Yahoo calendar and I can’t wait until I can switch back!!! :-)
October 10th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Can you tell me what “Preferred Content” you are at this link?
url: edit.yahoo.com/config/set_profile
We only support US, IN, UK right now. It would seem like we should just support all english countries but actually there is a lot of variation in how times and dates are specified. we’ll be expanding out more soon.

If I can sync my iPhone 3G and iCal on my Macbook w/ Yahoo Calendar, I will sing “YAHOOOOOOOO” from the rooftops.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:18 am
You can find out our syncing options here
url: help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/calendar/yahoocalendar/sync/index.html
Apple iCal supported today (I hope to hear you singing from sunnyvale!)
iPhone, waiting on Apple.
October 10th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Herbert: :-D Did you hear that?
October 10th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Herbert: Just tried it, got “Connection Refused”. I have an @ymail.com account, too.
October 27th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Just tried it also. Got ‘connection refused’ from the caldav server?
October 29th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Same here, brother. Trying to connect to the caldav server via Sunbird and getting no where. And inquiries to yahoo via their feedback form, — repeated inquiries — only yield regurgitated blurbs from brain-dead slave laborers in Myanmar.
Other question — why is there literally NO WAY to get help or even a remotely intelligent or at least even a non-stupid response?
October 29th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/calendar/yahoocalendar/sync/index.html …
… is a completely useless set of instructions. They do NOT work. Can someone just say whether Yahoo in truth and fact really does have this advertised CALDAV server to connect to via calendar proggies?
I am beginning to smell a rat. The CALDAV server simply does NOT work and is completely UNAVAILABLE. And all we get are these inane copy/paste regurgitations of that web link, which, again, does NOT work. How else can I say that? Hmmm … es funktioniert NICHT!
November 12th, 2008 at 1:41 am
Could you elaborate on the comment about waiting on Apple for iphone sync? I think this is a very important feature that many of us are waiting for…. :)
October 8th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
By 5PM (eastern US time) it already says the Beta users group is full for new calendar. Oh well.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Put myself on the waiting list. Can’t wait to try it out when it becomes available. :-)
October 11th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Got the Beta Calendar invite yesterday and switched over. So far so good. Only small complaint is that creating & saving appointments take a second or two longer than the old calendar. Otherwise, I like the feature where you can create different color coded calendars for family, etc. .
October 8th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I’m wondering if it will be integrated with Yahoo Mail? In other words when you click the calendar link within your mail will it simply open in another tab like when composing a new message…??
October 8th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I agree, I would really like to see it launch in a new tab such as the contact list does and not in a new window!
I am really excited for this feature! It’s been so long! Now all I need is a tape ticker in yahoo mail and I will be a 100% satisfied Yahoo! customer!
October 10th, 2008 at 10:19 am
That is the long term intention, but we want to be careful about screen realestate and performance.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
And….if your using the current Yahoo calendar will all your events and appointments be transferred to the new calendar..??
October 8th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
This is also a huge concern. Maybe I should back up my calendar!
October 8th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I’m checking on this to see if there are any known risks. I’m pretty sure there aren’t, but I’ll double check.

October 9th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I heard back and confirmed that there shouldn’t be any problems with lost data by switching to the new calendar.

October 8th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Will I be able to send an appointment to people with gmail, hotmail, outlook, thunderbird, aol mail, etc and it will show up in their own webmail calendars without having to sign up for their own yahoo calendar?
October 8th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Pete,
I’m pretty sure you already could, but I’m sure you can now (just tested it myself) :)
-Ryan
October 9th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I just tested the current (not the beta) version by sending an appointment to my hotmail account and there was no option to add it to my hotmail calendar, nor did the message come with any sort of ical attachment. How does the beta version actually work with respect to adding a yahoo appointment to a hotmail or gmail or outlook calendar?
October 9th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Pete,
I just tested it again with one of my gmail friends (yes, I know…I forgive him), and accepting the invite added it to his calender.
Super easy!

I’ve tried Firefox 3.0.1 and then updated to 3.0.3 but both give a message saying
“Sorry…
The new Yahoo! Calendar Beta doesn’t work in your type of browser yet.
Try accessing the new calendar from any of these other browsers:
* Internet Explorer, versions 6,7, and 8
* Mozilla FireFox, versions 2 and 3
* Safari 3.1″
Has anyone gotten it to work with FireFox 3.0.3? Does it work with any Firefox 3?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Update: switch.calendar.yahoo.com still complains I have an incompatible browser even though I’m running Firefox 3.0.3 and it says it is compatible with Firefox 2 or 3. The userAgent string at the bottom of Help | About Firefox is
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3
October 10th, 2008 at 10:21 am
We are looking into this. FF3 should be supported.
October 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
It was mentioned in this blog that use of an icalendar is low overall and you want to increase it. Beyong the sprucing up of looks and really above that you NEED to get the sync functionality back for vista and palm desktop for vista and outlook 2007. I was using the calendar every day till that happened. That should be a TOP PRIORITY to increase user experience.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I’m using “Autosync for Yahoo” to sync to my outlook 2002 (on XP), will that sync with your 2007 version?
October 10th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Unfortunately not. We started building a new sync application that will.

October 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Oh, this is good news! I’ve been hoping for years that Yahoo would make the calendar more modern and fun to use. This is 2008 after all! I eagerly headed over to the beta tester page but was told that the group was full. I added myself to the wait list and I can’t wait to try out your new calendar with the fancy bells and whistles. I just hope that when the change over occurs that all my hundreds (thousands?) of entries will carry over without being lost. Thank you for the good news and interesting blog.
Different topic: I love all the new stationery designs in the mail. Is there any way to incorporate all of them into the My Yahoo pages? I’m not saying I’m bored with the current design selections but I’d like to see a greater variety. Variety is the spice of life. I like those visually appealing colors and backgrounds. Good job.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Signed up fine & is functional with FFs latest version. Initial bug I see; doesn’t display the entire entry. I list ‘take pill’ at 7:30pm, it shows as 7:30p with half the ‘m’ of ‘pm’ cut off; and pill is spelled p i l. Calendar Options dropdown from Yahoo FF toolbar for Calendar shows ERROR 9999. Can’t delete the Flickr option- I don’t want it. Colors are a little pale and wimpy.

It look pretty awesome and more convenient…Im gonna try it out now. :)
October 8th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Hi everyone,
I’m pretty certain that all of your existing content should be retained in the switch, but I’ll check with Herbert to make sure that there aren’t any known bugs around that.
Also sorry that you weren’t all able to get in with the first batch, but we’ll be adding people as quickly as we can.

Hi Ryan, dont no much about the calender yet, can you send me some information about the calendar to matthewjackson8@ymail.com
Thanks
October 8th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Impressive work. As always, Yahoo! keeps on impressing me. Thank you for informing, Ryan!
October 9th, 2008 at 2:16 am
Will it be possible to sync to-dos (task list) with other programs using the above mentioned protocols?
I’m still on the waiting list, but I can’t wait to see the new calendar!!!!!
Thanks,

Waw…..I just love it so much @_@ I can’t wait to see it integrated in the new Y!Mail ^^.

October 9th, 2008 at 5:33 am
New problem I’ve noticed – it’s changed my time / date settings for my calendar strip in Yahoo Mail. Even if I enter an event at 10am UK time, in the YMail calendar strip it displays it in Pacific Time (2.00a).
Also, it has inverted my calendar day/month format in YMail calendar strip. UK standard is to use day/month. Now it’s flipped back to month/day – quite annoying.
Otherwise the new interface is GREAT!
October 10th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Thanks for the report. We are seeing issues with UK and the calendar strip. The first problem you reported doesn’t sound familiar actually but we’ll look into it.

Yahoo HotJobs keeps spamming me, it’s been going on for over a year. Who do I contact to get off their mailing list?
October 9th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Do you not check the content of the pictures people post? There is one that is filthy. I will not use this because of this content. . . . .
October 9th, 2008 at 8:50 am
Anybody in the UK (UK user) using this? When I try to use the calendar I get the following (this is both at my work and my home pc so I know it’s not a machine problem): -
I open calendar and it opens in a new tab (I’m using IE7). I get an egg timer and then an IE Error pop box appears saying something like “A script is running on this page that may cause your IE/PC to run slow do you with to abort YES NO”. I click NO and nothing happens and then 20 secs later I get the same message. If I click yes the box dissappears but my pc is running so slow. I open task manager (ctrl-alt-del), click on processes and iexplorer is using 300-400k!!! It remains unusable until I close it (and the error box keeps re-appearing!).
This happens on both my home and work pc (my home pc has 1gb ram and runs very quick).
To make matters worse, I check the new help section which says if I wish to revert back I can (but I will lose any new data I’ve input) by clicking Options in the top right of screen and then clicking Switch Back. I don’t have an OPTIONS, I have preferences in the top right and when I get my pc to finally choose it (as it’s running so slow as to what I’ve described above) there’s no options to swtich back!!!
Help – anybody else having this problem? Ryan heard anything on this?
October 9th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Hi Rob, I’m in the UK and using the new calendar. I’m having my own problems (see a couple of entries just above yours), but I’ve not experienced the memory problem. I’m afraid my tech brain can’t stretch to explain it. Sorry.

Love my yahoo.
The 2000 in my email address is the year I got it.
I use my yahoo calender as a appointment and billing book.
As a consultant I need to know where I need to be the next hour and or the next day. So I send an alert to my phone, I M and my email.
Will I be able to pick one or all if I need too?

October 10th, 2008 at 5:35 am
Hi Ryan, would you tell your colleagues that after a week they still have not fixed my problem: I have received no email for a week. So, any new “enhancements” don’t really interest me.
October 10th, 2008 at 9:41 am
I saw the question for the ubiquitous iPhone, but for other OSes (WM, Palm, Symbian, Android, etc.), will it be able to sync with the phone’s OEM calendar?
Though some 3rd party programs allow you to sync calendars now, you must use their own calendar program, which means manually copying thousands of entries from “Outlook Mobile” to a program like “XpressMail Calendar” or some such.
=====
Also, I tried installing Y! Autosync on my Vista computer…and it seems to work! Here’s how:
1. Download Y! Autosync
2. SAVE it to your computer (do not run it)
3. Make sure Outlook is closed (as are any other sync programs or any other programs that may access your personal address book or Outlook files)
4. Right-click on the install file, and select “Run as Administrator”
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
The first time you run Y! Autosync, it could take a while. It will also stop synchronizing if it comes across a conflict. If you are not working in another program, Y! Autosync will pop-up the conflict for you to address.
If you decide to do some other work while Y! is syncing, that pop-up will never appear (nor will you see Y! Autosync minimized in your task bar). Periodically click on the Y! Autosync icon in the background programs section of the task bar. If there is a conflict, that pop-up will appear…otherwise, nothing will.
Once sync is complete, a confirmation box will appear with an “OK” box for you to click. The next time you run it, it’ll take just seconds for it to process your calendar, contacts, notes and tasks.
October 10th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Sounds great. I still want to hear more about Windows Mobile support.
I guess I’d have to sync Yahoo! Calendar with Outlook, and Outlook to my Windows Mobile PDA. I’ll be looking for some way to categorize my appointments in Outlook so they can sync to one of multiple Yahoo! Calendar layers (or not sync at all if I so choose).
Is adding a client for viewing and modifying calendars directly from a Windows Mobile SmartPhone in the future?
October 10th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
One of your “daily” background pictures reads “Everything Sucks!” I don’t appreciate that.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
All of this is “clear as mud”!! Hopefully when the kinks are all worked out, I’ll be able to understand it and sign up.
October 10th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
please help…how do you switch back to the original calendar?? the help section says to “Click Options in the upper-right corner of the page, then click Switch Back”. when I click Options, I don’t see “Switch Back” anywhere. can we get a screenshot of the switch back link??
October 11th, 2008 at 12:19 am
I just checked my Yahoo! Mail, and I think that after changing over to the Calendar beta version, the calendar timeline at the bottom of the screen becomes a day behind and three hours earlier.
For example, I have an event set for Monday, Oct. 13th at 10am. In the calendar strip, it says that the event is Sunday, Oct. 12th at 7am, but hovering over this has the event listed correctly at Monday the 13th at 10am.
These also show up correctly in the beta Calendar.
Thanks!
October 13th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I, too, have this issue.
Still very excited about the new calendar tho …
October 14th, 2008 at 8:47 am

why is it when i try the ” all new -mail ” it tells me my screen resolution is not correct, when i have changed it to the regured specs several tines
October 11th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Help! I tried the beta. Now there is no way to switch back! I’m stuck with the beta (I’d rather wait for more of the promised features to be implemented).
I read the instructions in HELP for switching back to the old calendar but the option is nowhere to be found.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Thanks for switching me back – however that happened…
October 11th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Made the switch to the beta calendar. It looks great! However, after about an hour of using it, it kicked me out and I haven’t been able to look at my calendar for about 6 hours. I also get the following message on both IE and FF3:
“Sorry, Unable to process request at this time — error 999.
Yahoo!
Unfortunately we are unable to process your request at this time. This error is usually temporary. Please try again later. ”
Hope you guys can fix this kink quickly! I need to use my calendar, and I can’t even switch back cause it won’t load.
Additionally, calendar at bottom of mail says:
“There was an error loading your calendar Retry” Where Retry is a link. Clicking Retry doesn’t resolve the problem. HELP!
October 16th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Steve,
Are you still looking to swtich back?
-Ryan
October 16th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Nope! I LOVE the new calendar! I finished splitting up my events into different layers (I think I might have used too much bandwidth with all the calendar updates I was making). Once I got that finished though the problem went away.
Good work with the calendar! I really like it, and look forward to new updates and features!

I LOVE that this calendar is finally going to be updated. Yahoo calendar is the first online calendar that I used once my family got the internet back in 1998. I used it all through college and I liked it, but then google came out with their calendar and I really liked all the features it offered so I’ve since been using both calendars. Now that Yahoo’s calendar is finally competing and has many of the same features I may go back to only one. I can’t wait until the beta is over and you make the full switchover.
October 12th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
I also am unable to switch back. It is also annoying that the To Do pane cannot be removed. Hopefully the switch back issue will be fixed soon so I don’t have to move everything to another account.
October 13th, 2008 at 3:06 am
I love it!!! Sounds as though it can be a great time organizer! We’ll see how it goes…
October 13th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Lately I’ve noticed a strange behavior in Yahoo Mail. The Yahoo Mail right click menu (New Folder, Rename, Delete, Mark All Read, et al) is getting covered up by the browser right click menu so it is not usable. I can barely see its edges but I can’t get to the menu.
I haven’t seen this behavior since Yahoo Mail was in Beta. I think it started again with the deployment of the new calendar which also has bugs. For me the hidden right menu is only happening in FF3, which I use almost exclusively. I checked and it is not happening in IE7. Anyone else?
October 14th, 2008 at 8:50 am
I’ve not had this problem. My right click menu appears fine
October 15th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Oh, ok, thanks for your reply. I just figured it out. I had unchecked “Allow scripts to: Disable or replace context menus” in the browser’s advanced JavaScript options and forgotten that I had done so. I was a victim of my own tinkering. Not the first time that’s happened.
October 13th, 2008 at 7:27 am
I love the new calendar, however, everytime I make a number of changes on it, the calendar freezes me out with an error code 999. Hopefully this is something the yahoo staff will work on fixing. It has happened 3 times to me already and I am locked out for 24 hours everytime it happens.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:50 am
I am having this issue as well. It is so annoying! I think yahoo! thinks it is being spammed or something with edits, but really its just us testing it out!
October 13th, 2008 at 9:12 am

I have a bug where the calendar ticker (I don’t know what it’s actually called) at the bottom of my Yahoo! Mail displays the events a day too early.
I think it’s being tracked as ticket number 2279936.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Google has as part of their mobile suite a utility that keeps a Blackberry sync’d with Google Calendar. It’s my only reason for using Google Calendar rather than Yahoo!. Yahoo! had some “Next” stuff a couple of years ago that did some SyncML that was very handy and then just went away for some reason. Will something like this be developed for the new calendar to allow an over the air sync with a Blackberry device? It would be an awesome thing.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Forget the calendar – can you guys enable by default the ability to search for messages older than a month??
October 14th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Wow, this is awesome. I’ve been waiting for this for awhile….but…it’s not available in Canada. I guess we’re not English enough. :(

Yahoo! Calendar Problem (code 40)
The Yahoo! user handlers does not exist or does not have a public Yahoo! Calendar.
Use Yahoo! Profiles to find Yahoo! users.
October 15th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I don’t like the reminder options. On the old calendar you could set reminders for the 1, 2, 3, 4, weekday of the month. Don’t think its possible on the new calendar. I need to set up meeting reminder for the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month…??
October 15th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Never mind on the reminders I figured it out.
October 15th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
How about the ability to move events to another one of your calendars..??
October 16th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Figured this out. The option to switch the event to another one of your calendars is in the options for each calendar event. Cool!
October 15th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
i thinking thats cool!
October 15th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
We need a way to switch back to the Classic Calendar, b/c as of today (10-15-08) you still can’t.
October 15th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Still not able to switch back to the old calendar out of the new one. Switch Back is nowhere to be found on the options page. Hope this is fixed soon since I will miss Yahoo! if I have to move to another provider.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
c,
You should now be switched back.

I’d like to switch back – until the calendar strip issue is fixed, I really can’t use the new calendar. Thanks!
October 16th, 2008 at 6:06 am
I’ve sent several emails to support but no response yet. I’d like to switch back to the old calendar. The FAQ says there is an “switch back” under options, but I can’t seem to find it. Can you help out here?
Thanks.
October 16th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I think they disabled it temporarily because it wasn’t working properly.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Seth,
Is it the same Yahoo! ID that you included when you submitted your comment? I’m told you have already been switched back.

What is the box in the lower left hand corner for? When you mouse over it it shows a hand like you can click but when you do nothing happens…
October 16th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I’d like to know what the future plans for that box are as well!

Calendar sharing feature not working. Sent a sharing invitation to a family member (also on Yahoo). They used the link sent to them to add it to their calendar. The add request page just hung there for a moment and then went to error. Calendar was not added.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
When I share the calendar to someone else who has add/edit capability, they only see busy blocks on the calendar? Why can’t they see the actual entries?
October 20th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
When will we be able to sort by event type? I hope the event type is still related to each of my events since I have switched to the beta Calendar…
October 20th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
That information is being stored but not yet exposed. Thanks for your patience.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Events still not shown correctly in the “week” view or in the calendar time line in Yahoo mail. Times are of by approximately 3 hrs (EST).
October 30th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
This is still an issue……………….
October 20th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Can you include the “Daily Agenda” email like Google does?
October 21st, 2008 at 9:09 am
If the complete text of an event does not appear how about extending it to the next line down so the entire event title is visible..??
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 am
I was elated to get an invite to the beta…and that’s where my elation stops.
Unfortunately, the only new things about the calendar are its “ajax” sourcing and the ability to have any start/end time, not the “so-90s” 15-minute increment.
Yahoo continues to need to play catch-up with Gmail Calendar, and surprisingly enough, the impressive new calendar in hotmail/windowslive.
Here’s what Yahoo needs to do to “catch up”:
1. Add the “Agenda” view currently supported by Google and MSN
2. In the “week view”, if your event is more than 12-15 characters long, you get that annoying cut-off; also, having your mouse “hover” over the event in question does not always bring up the full event.
3. Has Yahoo even noticed that MSN/Hotmail has added a very powerful outlook-type “To-Do” list? Yahoo’s new “to-do” or task application is a joke- it has no area for due date, notes, etc.
C’mon Yahoo- if you want to play with the big boys, you need to grow up!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:20 pm
I was excited to be one of the first to try the beta, hoping to combine personal and work calendars, however, I am disappointed that I can’t use it as fully as the old Yahoo calendar. It takes way to long to make revisions, reminders aren’t working right, I lost detail on my to-do list, and a number of other things. I’m going to wait until its’ out of beta = PLEASE SWITCH ME BACK!

I’ve tried many times to share my calendar to my wife via share calendar to another yahoo user. The email goes out, however when I hit save, it goes into continuous load. Am I doing something wrong? Is this feature working? I’ve also encountered the same issue when subscribing…intermittently. Any thoughts?
October 24th, 2008 at 6:24 am
Same problem here. I reported this some time ago. Apparently its not fixed yet.
October 27th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I found out how to share via calendars to yahoo users. I have a personal address and tried utilizing this address. It didn’t work. So I tried using the yahoo id, and lo and behold, it worked. I still want sync capabilities…currently I am subscribed to Airset which then syncs to my Windows Mobile device. I am actually enjoying this new calendar and love the ticker within mail.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I must admit that the new Yahoo calendar is a major improvement over the previous calendar. Now that Yahoo has one foot on the plate it’s time to bring up the other foot and swing that bat….bringing syncing capabilities for Outlook and Palm would bring you into the game and better yet, allowing for multiple calendars to sync would put you ahead of the game.
October 25th, 2008 at 4:40 am
I was a heavy user of the online calender a few years back… I have Lotus Notes at work, Outlook at home, and had Outlook on my HP PDA. Syncing between my PDA and my PC worked great… Syncing with Yahoo worked great too… UNTIL… the day I came back to my PC & PDA when they were supposed to be updating my yahoo calender and instead of it seeing the task had been completed… I read a small message that said “See what I can do”. Naturally I pulled my PDA from it’s base and checked it’s mail and calender only to find all had been erased… DELETED!!! I also checked Outlook on my PC; it too was missing all of the over six thousand emails I had been saving for the past three years. But the worst was my calender and contacts had also been erased. Someone had hacked my PDA while it was in the cradle synced to yahoo by using the yahoo messenger program to delete all of my email, calender events, and contacts on my PDA, PC, and Yahoo account!
When I reported this to yahoo, I received a short message back saying they would investigate but they could not restore my missing data.
I can only wonder if this little problem has ever been fixed. Since I could not sync outlook on my PDA to Lotus Notes at work, all that I had on my calender at work was still there to save my ass. But the loss of those emails from my PC was a critical loss that was only partially restored from backups. Had I been able to sync between my Yahoo and Lotus notes calender I can only speculate as to my ability to restore the missing data to not only my Yahoo calender but both my PDA and PC Outlook calenders as well
Soo… I ask… Has this hole in Yahoo messenger and the sync program been worked on and fixed???
And… will the calender be able to sync with Lotus Notes???
October 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Issues:
1. please add the ability to right click on an email and change it to an appointment.
2. When someone sends a ical format it is not seen as such.
3. the appointment should be able to handle attachments and test in the body of the event.
November 7th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
When are we going to get the ability to tag our events as what they are? (i.e birthday, meeting, party, etc…). Like in the current non-beta calendar.
November 8th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Here’s what Ive found out by speaking with numerous people – there is currently NO solution available that addresses the needs of many, many people. The solution that I propose and often boggles people (OMG, that would be great! Why don’t we have that?”) is a webmail service, such as Yahoo, offering email, calendar, contacts, tasks, etc., then provides a mobile SYNC option, perhaps via plugin to various mobile OSs, so that true sync-ing can happen. There should also be a service to sync from other clients as well, like Outlook, T-bird, etc.
The idea is that it’s easier to craft an email with a full sized keyboard vs. mobile keyboard, easier to make calendar entries, send links, have an html signature, etc., so it’s understandable if people prefer to work from a keyboard. We shouldn’t have to do things more than once, though.
I think basically what I’m proposing is a webmail service that acts as a sync between multiple computers and mobile devices- seamlessly, as a matter of fact.
Further, sync standards should be developed so that choosing a webmail service is about the benefits of that particular service, not the sync possibilities.
Gmail worked pretty nicely with OggSync for me, until I discovered that there’s a flaw somewhere that ends users’ ability to send email from their mobile devices. So, that clearly doesn’t work, plus OggSync is a third-party program that I ended up wasting money on (because I don’t use Gmail anymore).
So, to recap… Webmail, Mobile, Work/Home – all synced in real time without any loss of service or intrusion into our lives.
Is that too much to ask?
Thanks for listening.

The to do pane does not give me the option of setting an alarm by which to finish the task. The old system did. Am I missing something. Also, some of my old to do’s are now blank.
November 16th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I’ve switched back for now for two reasons: can’t figure out a way to set alarms in tasks. And the text in the calendar is too small, much harder to read than in the current calendar and I couldn’t find a way to change the option other than changing the color. Readability is a priority. I did want the drag and drop but let me know if these two other issues are fixed. From a Plus! customer who actually pays for this service.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
I would be happy to test the new calendar, too. I’m from Germany, so it isn’t possible for me to change from old to new in the “normal” way – can you please set me as beta-tester? I also would offer you my help in translating it from english to german language, if there is a language-file or something like this.
Greetings
Maxse

I tried to switch to the beta, but it says my language is not supported? Is it because I access my calendar through ATT Yahoo? If so, when will I be supported?

What happened to switch.calendar.yahoo.com? I was ready to try it…
December 17th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Has anyone noticed that you can sync zero duration reminders from iCal (such as “6:15 Pick up Joe”), but you cannot create 0 minute events in Yahoo Calendar? I have to create at least a 1 minute duration event, which is meaningless when shown in week view. And if it is a zero minute sync’ed event, it comes in with a strange number in week view — a fractional minute duration, I guess? Why won’t it let you create a 0 minute duration reminder?
January 8th, 2009 at 10:32 am
After a little tinkering, I’ve decided that the NEW mail doesn’t work with ATT branded services? Is that correct?
I’ve been getting that stupid “Not available in your language” message every time I try to sign up. For kicks, I created a new rocketmail account and tried it – to my surprise, it lets me in.
I really don’t want to move everything to a new id. Please tell me that support for ATT-Yahoo! DSL branded items is coming soon. It’s bad enough I lost Flickr Premium, don’t keep me in OLD mail forever…
And yes, my language is set to Preferred Content: US English.
January 12th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
I use the yahoo calendar now and I like it better then the google calander for several reasons.
1. it allows for 15 minute intervals
2.The notes are seen when the mouse hovers over the event
3. It has a task manager
However, Google can sync with my new blackberry and I can not find a way to do it with yahoo calender. Will the new calender keep all of the old features and add the syn function? If it will when will this happen?

Does anyone know when Calendar Beta will be available to BT Yahoo users? The new Calendar looks excellent – I’m keen to start using it
January 14th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
I agree with Mel, that Google calendar is so easy to sync with my Blackberry. But I hate Gmail and love Yahoo mail. So I am using Yahoo for my email and Google to manage my calendar and contacts. I would prefer to use Yahoo for everything to sync to my Blackberry. Please let me know when this is available.
January 26th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
I tried to sync calendar with my Blackberry and now cannot access my calendar at all. I get an error code 9999. Any ideas on how to get my calendar back?
January 29th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
For the last three weeks I’ve been getting an error message every time I try to access my calendar on my mobile phone saying mobile calendar is not currently available and will be returning soon. What’s the problem and how long is soon?

When is the new Yahoo calendar expected to be available to everyone? Will the ability to sync to the Blackberry and iPhone be included in the release?
February 16th, 2009 at 7:37 am
Brilliant – Yahoo Calendar Beta is now available to BT Yahoo users.
Checked this morning and have set it up.
However, I have a problem syncing between my Apple iCal account and my Yahoo Calendar account.
I can only get it to sync one way. I’ve set up my iCal Account to sync with Yahoo Calendar Beta and the set up was fine. I can create an event in Yahoo Calendar and it syncs to iCal. But events created in iCal don’t sync to Yahoo and none of my historic data in iCal has made it to Yahoo Calendar.
Any ideas?

The calendar has a lot of cool features but, it’s completely useless. There is no access to the information other than going to the web. If I can’t sync the calendar, access it on my smart phone or Outlook, it’s just a toy. There has been talk about sync for a while and it just doesn’t appear to be a priority. There’s even a link on the old calendar sync that they should have it working for Outlook by 2007…. sort of missed the mark. Google is way ahead with their products because they understand that access to information is just as important as the information itself. Come on Yahoo… catch up with Google. For now, I have to use the google calendar instead of Yahoo. Everything else I use is Yahoo.
March 20th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Will syncing with Palm Desktop still be a feature, and if so, when will that be available? That is THE feature that dictates my online calendar choice.

Is there any further update from Herbert Wang’s reply to the first comment in this thread? its been a few months since then and I’m desperate to see if i can do this with iCal and Btyahoo
May 7th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
I really liked the new calendar but it is completely useless to me without the ability to sync with my blackberry. When that capability is added I’m on board and please make it OTA! In the mean time I will just keep looking back at my google account wondering if I should make the move.
May 9th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
How does this thing handle outside (Outlook ) meeting notifications?
May 15th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Even though my preferred content IS set to English – United State, I still got this strange “The new Yahoo! Calendar Beta doesn’t work in your language yet.” What the hell is that. I have made the decision to move from Gmail/Gcalendar back to Y!Mail and Y!Calendar. I even have my Zimbra installed. Now, seems everything is ruined by this. Should I move back to google? Hmmm…. Think hard.

For Mac users out there, esp. those who refuse to shell out $99 a year to simply sync address book and iCal (I have all the other Mobile Me services through other providers that have proven to be much more reliable and they are free… and not the fly by nights, I have done my homework) I’d like to offer up my experience and method for utilizing the new Yahoo calendar. For me, it has turned into THE sync solution I needed. People forget that sync is really a very delicate procedure and by virture not very robust which is why people lose data all the time. Best practice with sync is to have a master document, the one document to which all changes are uploaded and which diseminates all changes to it’s client. In this case, I’ve made Yahoo my master calendar; do it the painless way by first of course backing up your iCal in case of a problem. Then export locally created calendar files in ics format and sign into Y Cal and simply upload them as new online calendars. I personally had a flawless information upload across the board with calendar data AND to dos. It was all perfect. Now, visit this webpage to learn how to enable iCal to read and write to your Yahoo Calendars http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/calendar/yahoocalendar/sync/sync-03.html;_ylt=AjrcvzqJd9xGOUE0pPkblHVKiCl4 and you’re set. Even the iCal features Yahoo doesn’t support – the data is still transfered into the calendar and will carry over to the other iCal instances you sync with Yahoo Cal. Thank you so much Yahoo
