Economy is down, but still be wary of unexpected lottery wins

If he keeps this up I may just have to find a way to give Mark his own byline, but in case you missed the Yodel post, our resident anti-spam czar Mark (the same one who held the recent workshop) had a few words to share about the ever increasing “lottery” scams. Check it out!
Coalition crackdown on lottery spammers
What generally increases when the overall economy declines? That’s right – crime. And these days, when you receive an email that proclaims that you’ve won the “Yahoo! Lottery,” the financially-pressured optimist in you might be more inclined to bite the bait.
Last May, we filed a lawsuit against “Yahoo! Lottery” spammers who use our brand to trick unsuspecting users into handing over personal data to claim a prize. And we’re making progress on catching these scammers, but we’re concerned that they may step up efforts to dupe people impacted by these tough times.
Today we announced a public-private coalition with Microsoft, the African Development Bank, and Western Union to allow victims of lottery scams to upload police reports we can use with the goal of tracking down these devious criminals and developing better ways of protecting people online. INTERPOL has gotten involved to inform international law enforcement agencies about the initiative and provide guidance on critical information to collect to identify trends and common patterns.
Here’s how it works. Yahoo! and the other coalition members have set up dedicated email addresses and Web sites (ours is http://antispam.yahoo.com/phishingtips) where lottery scam victims — those who took the bait and handed over personal information — can share details of the police report they have filed. These reports may be helpful to other coalition members and law enforcement in fighting lottery scammers.
For readers who spot a scam but don’t fall for it, we have tips for you, too. First off, don’t ever reply to the message, even as a joke. You don’t want to be encouraging these guys. Instead, click the “Spam” button, which helps us and our anti-spam systems block these types of messages and kick these criminals off the Internet. We also have a form you can use to report lottery scams and other kinds of abuse originating from Yahoo! users.
As we’ve said before, no one ever wins the Yahoo! Lottery. And that’s simply because there is no Yahoo! Lottery. We’re on a mission to protect you from these online predators, but in addition to what we’re doing on our end, you can also find some tips on how you can protect yourself on our anti-spam resource site.

I have seen many young-aged persons are misguided by this type of Lottery win mail. I personally support your actions in this regard.

Fantastic.
So when are you guys going to stop yahoo! Groups spam, then? Because I’d rather receive fake lottery winning announcements than have to mark as “spam” another ten invites in one day.

Some people I know are just as annoyed that they have to go into their email boxes and “unspam” yahoo-groups emails. Maybe you can set up a “filter” for this…?

I am very pleased to learn that YAHOO is taking serious steps to protect on-line users. I get so much Congratuations You’ve won notices and most of a begs and pleading from Africa, Nigeria and other places. I really don’t understand why this is so common. Because I am in a public blog sometimes makes me weary as much as anyone home business interpreuner. We all shall come together to assure that even with this a major battle and issue that should YAHOO provide us the best solutions to report such e-mail scams, I think that’s effective team management thinking. Good Job and best wishes to all!

is there valid yahoo lottery?

“there is no Yahoo! Lottery.”

It’s always a good thing to remind users about these scams no matter how computer savvy we are. Those of us, though, who read these blogs are probably the users who least need such reminders. More needs to be done to ‘educate’ the casual users of Y.Mail of the dangers of such scams, perhaps by making placing a large announcement on the first page when users open their Y.Mail accounts. It is too easy to overlook the small two- and three-line announcements at the bottom or side of the window.

No offense, but your faulty spam filter does a lot to encourage these spammers, every day I get 2-4 obvious spam email through mail.yahoo.com like the one I got this morning:
Subject: Award Winning Notification……..
MALAYSIAN NATIONAL LOTTERY.
3420 PERSIARAN SEPANG 63000
CYBERJAYA SELANGOR DARUL EHSAN
MALAYSIA.
Ref: MY/9420X2/68
Batch: 074/05/ZY369
Dear Winner,
You are a winner of the MALAYSIA National lottery online program that was held on the 16th of October 2008. You have been approved to claim a sum of $2.5 million USD. blah blah blah
I knew in one second it was spam, but how is it your filters can’t?? Sometimes I even get 2 copies of the same one??? I appreciate your efforts to track down these guys and put them in jail, but you need to spend more money on your internal filters, too!

It’s about time . to much time and energe goes into topics that infringe on human rites / civil rites / constitional freedoms . It is more productive to stop skams than promote prejudices !
November 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 am
More and more “Lottery Winner” nottices everyday! Some are cleverly disquised, and i expect some fools ( especially young ones) fall for them. I’ve been forwarding them to Phising, address. Easier just to mark them SPAM. But why do they get through your SPAM filters in the first place?
November 2nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
I also get several copies of the same spam mail.
Last week I recieved 15 from the same one! In the end (2 days later) it stopped but I came pretty close to losing it.
I also wish that the spam would not end up in my spam mail for me to have to delete it again and again.
And yes larger banners about sams or even current hot scams might be a good thing rather than asking me to do push ups or score a goal. ANNOYING

I get so much of the nonsense I think it is got MY compuret SCREWED-UP I am ready to CLOSE this address THEY WIN NOT ME!!! is there any hope??? I have this site for 5-6 years my friends all KNOW it & UNFORTUNETALY so do THEY !! is there anything to do??
November 3rd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I have been repeatedly annoyed by such tricky lottory winning award notifications which mostly bear yahoo mail trade marks. I accepted readly for the first time and I once contacted a so called agent named as Dr Bill Sharks who reported living in England. After a series of communications, I learned that it is an act of crime and geot frustrated and reported to the London police via their email, but I could get any help from anyone.
Lastly, I want to beg Yahoo mail inc. that please get ready to protect us from such criminal acts
November 4th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Two things - even though I continually send them to spam, i keep getting the same junk lottery emails. Has anyone else received the (i presume)new email claiming to be from the FBI?? I contacted our local FBI and asked if they had sent me an email…they assured me if they wanted to ask me questions they would have contacted me personally via phone or directly person to person. They wanted me to forward it to them, but I didn’t want to open this (which is the only way i know to forward info) Is there some way to forward these bizzare emails without first opening them??
November 4th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
all we can do is stay alert and blog out the spammers! Let’s stick together, and together it can be done, good job Ryan
November 8th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Even though I knew better, I responded to an email. Even though I stated that I knew it was BS, and asked how I could get in on this scam, they continued to send me emails. Now I get at least 3 or 4 a day. I even get emails from strangers recommending that I contact the people sending me the emails. I wish I’d never responded.

Those stupid “lottery” emails don’t bother me as much as all the other crap that yahoo’s spam (non)filter lets through. I’m beginning to think that yahoo is actually sending out this crap since the only sites that I use this email address all belong to yahoo.

NO RISK INVESTMENT!!! TURN $6.00 INTO $6000 OR $60000… I DID!!
READING THIS MESSAGE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER
!!!!!!PLEASE READ THIS ALL!!!!!!!!!
!!!!IT HELPED ME & IT CAN HELP YOU!!!!
!!!! NOT A SCAM !!!!
!!!I REPEAT NOT A SCAM!!!
THIS ONLY COST YOU A 6.00 CASH !!!INVESTMENT!!!
IT DOES WORK
!!!PLEASE READ ALL!!!
I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back,
I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now,and came across an
article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within
weeks with only an initial investment of
$6.00! So I thought, “Yeah right, this must be a scam”, but like most of us,
I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each
of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own
name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at
least 200 newsgroups.
(There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and
talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: “what
have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?” Then I invested the
measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!?…
within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured
it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I
made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over
$1,000.00! In the third week I had over
$10,000.00 and it’s still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made
a total of just over $42,000.00 and it’s still coming in
rapidly. It’s certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than
that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly,
WHY it works… Also, make sure you print a copy of this
article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I
promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start
making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy!
Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (print it out or download
it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in!
It’s easy. It’s legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage)
IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and
it is 99% no risk - it really works!
If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive
extraordinary dividends.
PLEASE NOTE:
Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in
20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and
integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully
adhering to the instructions.
You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your
product is not solid and tangible, it’s a service. You are in the business of
developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks
for quality lists. However, the money made
from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people
like you and me asking to be included in that list.
Here are the 4 easy steps to success:
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece
of paper “PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST.” Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and
place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen
through the envelope (to prevent
thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them.
You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating
the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing
is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY
LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it!
Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal
aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S.
Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal. Mail
the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1) Peter J. Davidson
250 R. 98th St.
Stone Harbor, NJ 08247
#2)Reginald B. Ringgold
890 Davis St. Apt# 307
San Leandro, CA 94577
#3)Mary Evans
P.O.Box 12106
Longview, TX. 75607
#4)Michelle Julia Gomes
181 State St 1st Floor
NewBedford, Ma
02740
#5) Alberta Burke
186 State St. #1
New Bedford,Ma.
02740
#6)Tom Boyd
1126 st rt 314
Marengo,Oh.43334
STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other
names up 1 place (#2 becomes #1, #3 becomes #2, etc…) and add YOUR name and
address as number 6 on the list.
STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to
original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at
least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to24,000 groups) All you need
is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! You won’t
get very much unless you post like crazy. :)
This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302
& 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for
yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again.
PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty
and integrity of the participants and by their carefully
adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the
program will continue and the money that so many others have received will
come your way.
NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a
computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that
you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the
$1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.)
so, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six
members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with
one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when
your name reaches the #1 position you will
be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only
$6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) Send it now, add
your own name to the list and you’re in business!
—–DIRECTIONS —– FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS————–
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting.
Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor
to the bottom of this document, and select ‘copy’ from the edit menu. This
will copy the entire letter into the
computer’s memory.
Step 2) Open a blank ‘notepad’ file and place your cursor at the top of the
blank page. From the ‘edit’ menu select ‘paste’. This will paste a copy of
the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If
you want to do your postings in different settings, you’ll always have this
file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various
newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by
highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu.
Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that
everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular
group, click the post message button. You’re done with your first one!
Congratulations…THAT’S IT! All you have to do is
jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it
will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE
NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE! BUT YOU
HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That’s it! You will begin receiving money
from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box
due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If
you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the
postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.**
Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200
postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the READING THIS MESSAGE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER

It is sickning to say the least to see ones own inbox being invaded by locaust of spams which are yet to destroy the other emails that are being sent in by other news agencies from around the world. Can you please help us put to an end to these monstrous acts by unscrupulous people who have no moral ethics at all?

I am just constantly amazed at how many spam emails I continue to receive on Yahoo Mail. I am going to move everything to Gmail as I am sick of the Nigerian Spam flooding my inbox. You mean to tell me they can’t create a rule to filter out this crap? Not impressed with yahoo anit-spam.
