Try out the all-new Calendar (Beta)

calendarThat’s right, you heard me correctly! There’s a whole new calendar application for Yahoo! and you are welcome to try it out now. I know that a lot of you have been requesting this for a long time, so this news is definitely something to sit up and take notice of.

What can I expect with the new Calendar (beta)?
I’m going to skip some of boring (well, not for me) stuff like it’s built by incorporating much of the technology developed by our Zimbra team, adhering to open standards, using Web 2.0 technology, and interoperability with Apple, Microsoft, AOL, Mozilla, and Google.

The good stuff that I think you’ll appreciate are the things like:

  • Drag and drop events
  • Calendar sharing
  • Personalisation like color coding and adding photos from Flickr
  • To do list
  • Setting reminders… plus a whole lot more

How do I get it?
Switching to the new calendar is easy. However, before I tell you how, there are just a couple of points you should be aware of:

  • The all new calendar is still in its Beta stage which means there are still some things to be ironed out, and you may run across a few errors now and again
  • And while switching over is easy, switching back is hard(ish). So, if you decide you don’t like the new calendar and want to switch back, all of your changes and additions will be lost. You’ll be taken to your old calendar from the day that you switched.

So, now that you’re in the know, here’s how to try it out. Just go to http://switch.calendar.yahoo.com and start using the all-new calendar (beta). If you’re not sure if it’s right for you, check out this video from the calendar team to give you a preview of what to expect.

Happy calendaring,
Andrew – Yahoo! Mail Team

Looks good. Is the new (beta) calendar visible on my MyYahoo page as a component just like the old one?

Thanks for letting us know, Andrew!!

I was just wondering if there was a Calendar blog, just like this one but for Calendar updates. I’m absolutely obsessed with the new one and I’d like to have up-to-date information on it if that is possible.

Thanks very much!

Hi Ellen,
I just double-checked, and do find the timezone listed for GMT+0 Britain, Ireland, Portugal. I hope that if you check again you will see it as a choice.
Thanks,

Looks an improvement but my major concern is synchronising with my mobile phone – is that possible? You can do it with Outlook calendars. If not, it’s useless to me, I am not always at a PC!

Also, are there facilities to print a day, a week, a date range, or one event? Also essential, when I am travelling and out of reach of electronic comms!

Else, I’ll stick to my diary!

Hi ,

Great Calendar but is it possible to have the feature where when you do switch back , you get all your details on the old calendar instead of them wiping.

“interoperability with Apple”? does this mean we can finally sync ipods and iphones with the yahoo calendar (like you sync them with yahoo contacts?)
keeping fingers crossed!

Its way too slow! Im a bit dissapointed with it because of that. Otherwise it seems to be a good substitute for the Outlook.

I tried to choose the new Yahoo Calendar Beta, as prompted by notice on front page of my mail, but got the following “inexplicable”:-
“The new Yahoo! Calendar Beta doesn’t work in your language yet. The team is working around the clock to translate everything in your language.”
Is this a faulty message or is there something I can do differently to access the new Calendar?

How can the All-New Yahoo! Calendar Beta not be working in my language????? I’m in Ireland but our language is English so what’s the problem?

—–
Hi Michael (and other @yahoo.ie users),
I’m sorry that you are not able to switch to the new calendar, at the moment. As funny as it sounds, Ireland is treated as a separate country and therefore a separate language. We know English is the primary language, but for this beta we’ve only turned on US English (@yahoo.com) and UK English (@yahoo.co.uk). To give you another example, Canada also uses English as a primary language, but the calendar beta is not turned on for Canada English (@yahoo.ca). Sorry for the confusion. It won’t be long before everyone will be able to start using the new calendar.
Thanks for your understanding.

I presume the calendar is not turned on for BT Yahoo customers as well as I’m getting the same message as diarmaid. Do you know when we’ll get access?

—-
Hi David,
Your presumption is correct. BT Yahoo customers do not yet have access to the calendar Beta. Sorry about that. You should have access once the calendar comes out of beta. I’ll keep you posted.
Thanks,
