UPDATED: Yahoo! Mail Workshop - What do you want to talk about?

In July we held our first Yahoo! Mail Workshop.  It featured a live Q&A with Yahoo! Spam Czar, Mark Risher, and the response we got from everyone was very positive.  If you don’t recall the details, Workshops are live, online, moderated chats led by Yahoo! staff, with a focus on a specific topic of conversation at a specific, scheduled time. It is our hope that these Workshops can be a great opportunity for users to get tips on a variety of Mail related topics, as well as gets answers to specific questions that you have.

After each event I’ll post a complete transcript of the event, so that those who couldn’t attend live can still get the scoop.

I’m currently putting together the next Workshop, and wanted to get a taste of what you guys would like to talk about.  Keep in mind that these workshops are for educational and informational purposes, not to obtain account support.  That being said, let me know what topics you want to ask about.

UPDATE: It seems from several of the comments that the intention of the Workshop has been misunderstood (or I did a lousy job explaining).  What we are looking for are topics that you have educational questions about.  How to do something…how to use something…how to _____ (fill in blank).  What this isn’t supposed to be is a sort of Town Hall where we get together and discuss the direction of the product(s).

I understand that many of you would like to know what features may be coming down the pipeline, or what changes are on the horizon, but as a public company we can’t go into a lot of detail until the appropriate time.

So all that being said, what types of things do you think you would like to talk about?

Spammers suck, but it would be great to update FAQ’s on how to properly send mail to Yahoo customers. I spent a lot of time and energy getting Domain Keys working and they didn’t help. It was only our White List request that helped. Also, when is Yahoo going to enable a feedback loop again (like AOL)? There are a lot of legit sysadmins who need to send mail to Yahoo customers. What should we do to ensure successful mail delivery? Thanks.

There are multiple options that have been shown as ‘we’re still tweaking these features…’ ; it’s been that way for a couple years. Will those ever get fixed? And can we expect a new Yahoo Calendar (anyone work on that?) to integrate with Mail?

I just want to know why Yahoo took away our choices as to how we want our e-mails sent. For example, I had a choice as to where I wanted the Bcc and now yahoo took that choice away and I have to keep cliquing it all the time when I want to send to a bunch of people. Why can’t I have the choice of just leaving it there instead of having to click on it.

you dont want BCC, just add from your e-mail addy book and every 1 you want to recieve a e-mail from you will be on line 1 that BCC is outdated anyway..send your friends e-mails, from line 1 or if you have something to say privatly..then send ist group, and after that go back to your page where you send e-mails and resend to other person..most e-mails on line 1 are up to 10, wish they would extend it to 20 or more…hate gonning back but thats life..end of story..THEY CALL ME RICK.

Once spam has been identified as such and deleted, couldn’t that spammer be automatically prevented from ever entering the mail account again, i.e. automatically blocked/deleted/bounced by yahoo? I get numerous spams with the same messages every day. I think I like the bounce idea best - let the spammer deal with the returned emails!!! See how they like getting their mailboxes filled with junk mail!

Most smart spammers would never see the e-mails again anyway. They would send the e-mails through a dummy address using a proxy and the e-mails would never find their way back.

I’d love to be able to hit a key and block an email address I don’t want to see again! Make it easier please?
I would also like the BCC back where it used to be to send blind copies.
I’d like more colorful back grounds without child-like characters.
When I clean up an email from addresses and junk..sometimes it doesn’t erase easily and i have to do it sentence by sentence.
Frustration!
I, too get the same Spam addresses sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. No matter that it comes into my spam account..I’d love to see it gone. Adding them to the block list doesn’t do anything.
I’d love to have a calender to look at while writing emails!!!!

I’ve also been told a new Yahoo Calendar will be released. When is this going to be available..?? It should be integrated into Yahoo Mail as another tab not another web page.

when you start typing a name, many possibilities show up in drop down menu so you can just click on one - that is great - but it brings up ALL the addresses you have ever used for that person - even the ones you have deleted. please have it check and if deleted, do not show or give us the opportunity to right click the deleted address and delete it from memory so it won’t show up again. I constantly find I send email to an addrewss I deleted and the person never gets the email

Having been a 10-year loyal Yahoo Mail client, I have been extremely disappointointed that one of the so-called “improvements” is the draft function where the draft disappears once the email is sent. I know you can press the shift key while sending, but for all of us used to drafts saving and remaining in the draft folder, this really sucks. What is the possibility of reverting this back to how it used to be? I cannot see any benefit to the way you have altered this function now!

Thank you!

Robb and Budrow,

I totally understand that this change impacts your preferred behaviors, however the addition of auto-save (which is something that most people really wanted) mandates that the drafts be handled differently. If it’s not moved once sent then you will end up with a drafts folder that is nothing more than a mirror of your sent folder.

That being said, we understand that draft power users (as I sometimes call them) have relied heavily on drafts that not only stay in the drafts folder, but also revert back to an older saved version. With auto-save it simply can’t work the same, so users will have to adjust. You can create templates and save them in other folders, or in your notes tool. I’m also personally trying to get one of the engineers working on Open Mail applications to try and tackle this.

-Ryan

Comment by Rich

October 2nd, 2008 at 12:20 am

Yes, Ryan, you’re absolutely right about the importance of automatically removing a saved draft once we send it. Until your developers fixed that, I had to avoid using the Save command because of the nuisance created when I’d forget to go back and delete the draft and later would have to double-check whether I’d actually sent it or not.

Having said that, however, I disagree with your suggestion to use Notes as templates–at least, not while Notes have no formatting. As for saving templates in other folders, that’s part of my workaround; it’s simple enough to use, but it lacks the convenience of a true draft template. Using another folder (which I call, naturally, Templates) is really only an incidental part of my workaround; I started out by keeping templates in the Drafts folder and moved them only to avoid accidentally editing a template & then sending it.

My workaround for creating a template is to save a draft and NOT send it. Next, I drag the draft into my Templates folder. While this is easy, it won’t satisfy people who prefer to rely on the Move button (unless you add a Move button to the Drafts folder, of course, which could lead to other issues). To create a new message based on that template, I copy the template’s contents and paste them into a new message. This is simple enough to do, so I’m not sure how worthwhile it would be to program a formal solution, but from Robb and Budrow’s comments, it might be worth considering.

So, here’s what I suggest ought to be easy to implement. Create an option to mark a draft as a template. There are various good ways to present that option to us. You could put a “Mark as Template” option in the More Actions menu of the Drafts folder and in the right-click menu for Drafts items. You could also add a drop-down button to the Save Draft button, offering a “Save as Template” option. Within the Drafts folder, you could distinguish Templates visually somehow, such as by color or shading or with an icon in the “Sort messages by …” column (which could then be labelled “Sort messages by status”, where status values would be read, unread, or template).

There are more functionalities to work out, of course. You’d have to provide for editing a template for the purpose of either: (a) modifying the template; or (b) creating a new message based on that template; or (c) both.

No doubt, you guys have already thought of all this, and more.

Thanks,
-rich

You know, there are plenty of “improvements” from June that still don’t work: Forwarding email with full headers, being able to display full headers all the time, duplicate names appearing in the auto-fill address box, auto-fill selects “current entry” rather than what is actually typed, etc. Why discuss anything other than the needed priority each of these failures should be given in the fix list?

How to quickly find previous e-mails. When you run Search it does’t put the results in chronological order, so you can’t quickly scroll though the list and look through the results in a way that makes sense. I’m assuming this is a user error, and not bug/feature request. Bottom line best practices for finding old e-mails. Thanks.

Hi, Ryan,

Seems to me that “a sort of Town Hall where we get together and discuss the direction of the product(s)” is what most of your audience really wants.

And for my 2¢ worth of personal wish list, I’d like an automated way to combine Contacts addresses. When I send mail to a new address, and your system adds that address automatically to Contacts, I’ll get one Contacts listing for someone’s work email and another Contacts listing for that person’s home email, and then if I want to combine them (which simplifies finding that contact, and allows me to specify which address gets listed first in the auto-complete list), I’m faced with a boring, repetitive, manual process. When auto-adding the new address, it would help if we could specify adding it to an existing Contact record; also, in the Contacts folder we should be able to combine two Contact records, and when editing a Contact record, we should be able to click to move an address up or down through the hierarchy of addresses.

Thank you for providing a personal contact point for us with Yahoo! Mail. We tend to forget how many millions of accounts and varied worldwide issues you have to support,

-rich

I would like to talk about this. Yahoo said that inserting graphics into an outgoing email is not currently available. Yahoo said to make a comment about it on this blog because I guess they want to see how many others care about that. So, please, if you are a small business owner like me, and want to be able to send html E-mails with graphics, please tell yahoo you want that. I think that Yahoo should at least give that feature to those who have a Yahoo! Small Business Acccount (web site). If you agree, please chime in! Thanks!

Would you like this fit a certain iPhone interface hypothetical. The only thing static is the YAHOO! ID everything else should be allowed to change. There should a paid for and ad supported versions. Also, there is enormous scope on the 3D interfaces side. Like one of those 3D games.

Spellchecker is substandard for a service that’s been running as long as Yahoo has. The list of suggested correct spellings is underdeveloped –VERY simple misspelled words don’t get suggested correct spellings. The “Resume” feature does not *resume* (as in pick up where it left off); instead it makes Spellchecker go back to the beginning of the message and start all over again! And it sure does start all over again, querying the very same words I had pressed the “Ignore” button for two seconds earlier.
What alarms me is that Spellchecker is getting erratic. It often seems to correct a word properly, yet when I check back in my message before I send it, I find that it added something like “&nsb” to the word or deleted the space after a word it corrected! What in the world is going on?
Having said all this, I would like to say I am very thankful Yahoo has always given us Spellchecker. It makes for a less painful world. . .

What are the little red figures,in the left, upper part of the blank pictures for ? Also how do you get a down load to work when at the end they ask for the25#s off your carton, when some one else sent you the down load?

I’d also like to know about the problem with the paragraph tags. In a lot of emails that I receive all of the paragraphs run together. I checked the HTML coding that was sent and they are using the “” tags but they seem to be ignored by Yahoo. Any ideas?
