Need to change your Yahoo! Password or Name? There’s a tutorial for that

I was chatting with a buddy from Customer Experience the other day (everybody say hi to Carl. He is not only tasked with finding ways to make your Customer Care experience more pleasant, but he also reads this blog from time to time), and I learned about some of the common questions agents are getting.
Now it’s not all that noteworthy that there are common questions, but what people may not know is that when we identify these common questions we try to update the Help Center. This means if you didn’t find the answer to a question before, that doesn’t mean that it won’t be there in the future. It’s kind of organic that way.
Anyway, one of the more recent additions to the Tutorials area just so happens to address not one, but TWO of the common questions he was telling me about. This tutorial offers a thorough run through of the different ways you can customize the All-New Yahoo! Mail.
Included in the Customizing Yahoo! Mail tutorial are step by step instructions for changing the content on your Home tab, changing the color of the interface, and more. But the one that caught my eye was changing your personal information. It turns out that two very common questions are about changing your password and changing your password and changing your name. It also turns out that we have a great tutorial with step by step instructions.

Just below your Yahoo! ID, and above your Home tab, are links for Sign Out, My Account, and Mail Classic (for switching back to Classic).
Clicking My Account takes you to the Yahoo! Account information page, which covers your info across all of the Yahoo! Network. Keep in mind that the password update, accessed by the Change Password link near the top of the page, is a system wide change, meaning you will now be using that password for all things Yahoo!
Another common question people have involves changing your name. Whether it’s because of marriage, because of divorce, because you resent your parents, or just messed up during registration, people keep wanting to update that name.
Well you can also update your name from the same page, but we’ve found that in some cases people just want to update their name within Mail. Maybe you want your full name on your Yahoo! account, but want a nickname or short name within Mail. Well on the same page you’ll find a tutorial with steps to update your Mail name on an account by account basis.

There you have it. Changing account information is easy if you know where to look for the directions.
BTW … our Tutorials team is always looking to make them better, so after checking them out please be sure to answer the “Was this helpful?” and provide any feedback you can!

Hello, i’m interested on the statement that we can get messages from OTHER accounts (or use the SHIFT+M). is it mean that we can login two accounts at the same time?
because i have another yahoo mail, and it’s tiring i have to logoff one account to another just to check mails.
(Since i cant login at the same time, i think the cookies prevented it)
Thanks for the Help…

Meli,
The answer is yes and no. ;)
Yes you can use your Y! account to retrieve messages from another account, but that account has to have POP or IMAP support. Your other Y! account would need to be a Mail Plus account to make this work, but it is possible.
I have two main email Y! addresses that I use (one personal and one for the blog) and I have solved this by downloading Yahoo! Zimbra desktop (posted about it a month or so ago). It allows you to set up as many accounts as you want, and works with free Yahoo! accounts.

ira,
Power Users aren’t typically based on tenure, but more about varying levels of activity. Not sure what the specifics are for each product, or if all products have programs identifying them. Mail and Messenger do, and I think maybe Groups.
You can confirm Power User status in Mail by signing in with your Y! ID and visiting the product overview site (http://overview.mail.yahoo.com/). If you are a Power User there will be a Power User tab just to the right of the blog tab.
If you are Messenger Power User, and download the latest version of Messenger 9.0, you will get a pop-up box and an opportunity to display a special symbol next to your name (that displays to other users).
Cool stuff!

Thanks for the power user info. I noticed that I’m a power user but never knew what, if any, perks come with that status. Now I can use my power user, er, powers. :)

First of all, I have to warn all you that I a bit “stupid” when it comes to some of the computer related language.
I have a few questions on this matter. Here it goes.
Does changing the “name” mean that I can change the wording in my
e-mail address and still keep my present account without giving the wrong impression that by doing this I might be considered another person?
Also, in regard to the password, can I leave as it is or I change it as many times as I want.
Your patience with such a “dud” in computer language is appreciated.

Iris,
Changing your “name” represents changing the name that appears alongside your email address when you send a message. It does not have any impact on your login and email address.
There is an option to create an alias email address for your account. This allows you to keep the same account while creating a new or different email address. This only works for one additional address though.

Hey Ryan - Here’s one I’d be grateful to have you tackle, RSS Feeds in the All Feeds folder. As hard I try I can’t add certain feeds and I’ve seen others with the same problem on Yahoo Answers.
Thanks!

September 17th, 2008 at 10:22 am
How can I change my USERNAME?
I’m getting over 100 spams every day. My filters and block list are full.
I would LIKE to keep my old mail, but this is getting so bad that I may have to resort to abandoning the email with this username.

I mentioned above that there is an option to create one additional email address / profile for your account. This doesn’t change your account ID, but does enable signing in or emailing from either.
You can’t actually change the core ID associated with your account. Only way to do that is create a whole new account and use TrueSwitch to move your content over.

Ryan-
I’m concerned that Gov. Palin’s Yahoo Mail account was hacked, and while I’m not a famous figure, I do have private emails, and I hope that this wasn’t due to a “flaw” in Yahoo’s email security protocols. Is this something that you will look into on our behalf? I hope that you will communicate Yahoo’s response to this breach on the blog.
Thank you,
Eric

Hi Eric,
Stay tuned, I have a post from VP of Mail John Kremer that I’ll be putting up on Thursday morning.
In short, our protocols are only effective if users do their share. All the security in the world won’t protect someone who uses “password” as their password. That’s not a statement about the governer’s password (I have no idea what hers or any other users password is), but is just a reminder that users need to have good passwords.
Check back in the morning for more.

Hi there,
I have tried moving my email account from Gmail to Yahoo using Trueswitch - but after a while, it just stops and only about 50-60% of the emails are transferred. Veru bizarre.
Another thing that I would like Yahoo to consider is stop publishing public profiles of new users/email accounts. Why would you do that? If I sign up as, say, NEWUSER, Yahoo will immediately publish:
http://profiles.yahoo.com/NEWUSER
Now - this is very easy for any spammer to harvest and as has happened already, start spamming new accounts.
I can not believe that Yahoo does not consider the implications of this.
Thanks

Yes, yahoo should do this. I created an account for my Mom, and I actually set it up as a plus account, I was going to send !yahoo $20 a year so my mum could have disposable addresses. But within an hour of creating it, I got spam to the sign in id accout. I canceled the whole thing in disgust. There must be spammers constantly looking for new users.
Yahoo, are you listening?

I replied to this, I thought I saw it posted, but now I don’t see it. Is it my computer/browser or is it Yahoo!?
Yes, in my opinion, yahoo has privacy, identity, and security defaults often backwards. The ID, profile, etc. should all be private and unlisted as default.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:51 am
why are my comments appearing then disappearing then appearing then disappearing then ???
When a newuser signs up, the defaults should do everything to hide their ID, email address, profile, etc. Hasn’t the enormous amount spent combatting spam and the Palin hacking taught yahoo anything yet?

Hey I have a question, when I sign in using my old yahoo account the yahoo page it says Hi Robert above the mail, radio etc. But on my new yahoo account it says Hi ladies_luv_rob (My ID) How can I change that to Hi, Rob
September 22nd, 2008 at 11:10 pm
I get frustrated easy because it has been a long time time I felt well enough to use my computer much less not confuse the browsers and the issues that surround them.
I hope this is my answer to changing my e-mail address and finally works out for me.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
This is a very badly worded title. Instead of Need to change your Yahoo! Password or Name, it should be Need to change your Yahoo! Password or your “email From Name”. The title makes it sound like one can change their sign in name, login id, user name, core ID, what ever, but the article only pertains to “email from name”
Please fix it.

I have been with yahoo for a very long time and maybe it’s just me but I have never had a problem. The only time I came close to losing my mind was when I switched from Mail Classic to the newer version, well I am back to the classic and happy. Thank You Yahoo
