Order has been restored to the YMail blog!

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/WithoutMe.jpgGuess who’s back … back again!  I have indeed returned from my recent travels abroad, and though I am now quite sunburned (and considerably lighter in the wallet) I’m pleased to see that the blog is right where I left it.  It’s also nice to see (and hear) the response from some of the user submitted pictures, so please feel free to send me pics anytime.  I’m still getting through email and recent comments, but should be all caught up very soon.

But enough with the pleasantries, and onto the business at hand.  As I’ve said before, building “it” isn’t enough … if you want them to “come” you need to also let them know where it is (except of course if building a baseball field in Iowa).  So I recently got some of my friends to put the blog into the rotation with other educational messaging within Classic and All-New Mail.  Voila, readership is ticking up.  But that also means there are likely a lot of folks who are visiting for the first time, so I want to make sure they know what’s up and ask you all to bookmark, subscribe, or even make this your homepage.

Repeated apologies to those experienced readers who have already seen this stuff, but fear not I will try to find you guys some breaking news next week. On that note I’m going to leverage some content from past blog posts…

Whether you are looking for the:

… or what have you, this is where you can go to find it. You can also subscribe to the RSS Feed, or even better you can add it to MyYahoo by clicking Add to My Yahoo! and you can see updates there! I look forward to seeing you back here in the future.

I’ve chosen Yahoo Mail as my main portal to the web. I use it for e-mail, news, weather, calendar, and address book. However it greatly inconveniences me that I have to leave the Yahoo! Mail portal to get stock information. I was wondering if there was any hope of a stock ticker built into the new Yahoo! mail coming down the pike?

Why not make a My. Yahoo Page… You can put anything on it you like including your own bookmarks and everything you mentioned above. Mine is now so old that I have to remove things that no longer interest me. You can get your email from the My Yahoo Page and with tabbed browsing never leave the single browser window again…

Steve,

Bill’s right, the My Yahoo is a great way to customize your activity. However I’ll also pass along your request for a stock widget within your Mail experience.

How about updates on the BUGS already reported and confirmed by the Ymail! team?

1) Unable to forward messages with full headers.
2) Contacts listed multiple times in the auto-fill window.
3) HTML renders funny in well-formed email messages.
4) Too much SPAM gets in the Inbox. My Yahoo Mail account gets 20-30 TIMES as much spam in the Inbox as my Gmail account. There is obviously a better way to manage spam!

Regards,
Opher

Hi Opher,

I’ll do some digging but here’s what I already know.

1) You can forward messages with headers, but it requires that you copy/paste the header into your forwarded message (this works in Classic and New Mail). That being the case we are still working on ways to make it even easier for users.
2) I’m spacing on the auto-fill issue, can you refresh me.
3) This issue was resolved but may have popped up in a different way. I’m collecting details from some impacted users.
4) SPAM is a tough challenge and a high priority. Yahoo! is an attractive target for spammers, so we know we have our work cut out for us, and are in no way giving up. It would actually be best to check out Mark’s comments from the recent Anti-Spam Workshop.

I regularly have trouble getting emails from certain gmail users. Others in the “To” field on these emails are getting the emails, so I know they are getting out of the gmail system. These gmail addresses are in my Contacts list. I check my Spam folder every time I see anything in it when I refresh Yahoo (at least 10-15 times a day) - so it’s unlikely these emails are going into my spam folder and being deleted by Yahoo without me seeing them. What else can be done to fix this problem?

I am not pleased the signature option has been removed. There are times I do not want my signature to appear on an email. Now I seem to have lost that choice. Bleh.

I don’t understand … why would you ever write something you were not willing to sign?

In response to “why would you ever write something you were not willing to sign?” - the signature (sig) in an e-mail is not just your name, but a standard set of info you want to put after your name. For instance, maybe you want to include your url or information about your background/interests, or realspace contact info, or alternate e-mail addresses. I have different sigs for different purposes, so I also find it annoying that yahoomail doesn’t seem to have any flexibility in this matter (all or nothing approach), especially on my mobile when I don’t have such easy access to macros with the sigs as on my computer. Without a sig, you still put your name at the end of the message (manually, not automatically).

I’m not the one that sent the message about the mail drop down in the “to” box.But I have the same question - I continually get names/addresses multiple times or get ones that I have deleted from my contacts I cannot find a way to right click to remove the addresses from the drop down box that I no longer want or that are no longer correct.

Why is it I keep getting error code 1 when I attempt to log into my mail account?
I have not been able to reach anyone in technical support and no answers on forums.
I am totally bewildered and frustrated.
Where do I go from here?
I am yelping help!

I access yahoo mail via the built-in web browser on my Palm Centro./Verizon (the Palm VersaMail has never worked for my yahoo, although it works fine for earthlink mail). It automatically goes to the mobile version. No problem since late July when I got the Centro. But since about August 27 or 28 2008 (it’s now Sept 1), I only get the “service temporarily unavailable” message. I can access the same acct via my regular computer with no trouble. I tried accessing my verizon yahoo account that came along with my dsl (slightly different url), the centro can’t access that one at all. I keep the inbox cleared out and also sign out whenever I access on my main computer. I tried signing out on the centro, but it won’t let me because (drum roll, please) “the service is temporarily unavailable)….

Is anybody else having this problem? Any ideas? No answer from yahoo so far.

I’m having the same problems as Meg. I’ve been getting either error code 1 or error code 2 anytime I try to check my mail. I can get to my page on my.yahoo.com with no problem, and can look at my contacts, but I can’t get to mail. I also don’t know where to go for help. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Just wanted to update you folks and let you know that the error messages should have been a temporary issue for users on a specific farm, and should be better now. Drop me a line if you are still seeing them.

One more thing you should do:
Re-direct the old YMailUpdates Blog URL to this site.

I didn’t know you still existed. Honestly. My wife asked me if I saw the latest update on YMailUpdates. I immediately went to my home page, where I have the RSS subscribed, and the notation read “No Updates in Over One Year.” I deleted that RSS, re-added this one, and, as you say, “Voila!”

Of course, you probably have thousands of other users just ignoring you, because their RSS feed says “No New Updates” as well. You used to have some features that would automatically update the RSS URL, even if the new blog was on another site. That hasn’t happened with this one.

Excuse me…I now have a year’s worth of entries to read…

Hi Scott,

All redirects “should” be taking people here. Unfortunately I’m not really a DNS expert :)

http://ymailupdates.com
http://ymailupdates.com/blog
http://ymailupdates.com/blog/feed

All three take you to the blog or a current feed. Can you confirm for me what feed URL you were subscribed to that wasn’t updating? I’d very muck like to clear that up.

Hello,

For several days now I cannot link with my verizon account (the link is gone from my Yahoo account), though everything says I am linked properly. I also cannot use my shortcuts or list mailing OR get help from Yahoo mail, it keeps sending me to Verizon help! Please, please post something about this issue.

Thanks,
Bec
