Check out the new Mail Overview site!

If you’ve ever wanted a place to go to get a quick snapshot of everything about Yahoo! Mail, I have some splendid news for you.  We have just rolled out an all new Product Overview site (overview.mail.yahoo.com) that should (in theory) contain anything and everything you wanted to know about the features and functions of Yahoo! Mail, but didn’t know where to ask.  Here comes the preview, but make sure you read to the end for some additional news about the blog.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/Prod1.jpg

As you can see there is an easy to follow navigation bar at the top of every page.  You can drill down within the Products tab to get detailed information about Classic or All-New Mail, and if you’ve ever wanted to know the differences, there is an option for that too.  You get side by side feature comparison of both versions, with some details about Plus features too.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/Prod2.jpgEach main product page also has tab choices that let you see not only the current features, but also a summary list of all of the most recent changes.

But maybe you don’t want just a summary list of the changes.  If that’s the case you needn’t fret because there is another option in the main navigation bar that lets you review detailed descriptions of What’s New with Yahoo! Mail.

Maybe you want to know more about integrated chat or SMS within the All-New Mail.  Perhaps you were living under a rock and never heard that we offer unlimited storage for all users.  No matter your flavor, you can find the latest major product breakdowns under that tab.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/Prod3.jpgUnder the enhancements tab you can find a very detailed description of all of the features of Yahoo! Mail Plus, accompanied by one of my favorite Liam incarnations…Super Liam!

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the coolest aspect of the overview site…the giant link to this blog!  Sure you are already here now, but I’m all for anything that makes it easier for you to get back, as well as anything that could bring some new readers.

If you happen to be someone who found your way here for the first time thanks to that link, please do subscribe to the RSS feed and come back again.  Here you will find breaking news about both versions of Yahoo! Mail, product demos, screencasts, and news about bugs that may be impacting your Mail experience, all with a healthy dose of lighthearted humor (except on the bug posts, of course).

There’s lots of stuff to check out on the Overview site, so please have a look around.  Also, I want to let you all know (or at least the folks who read all the way to the end of my posts) that I’m going to be out of the office for the next week, so be patient if you don’t see any comment responses from me for a few days.

I’ve queued up some great posts with the pics users submitted of the places they use Yahoo! Mail, and they will be going up while I’m gone.  Enjoy, and I’ll be back soon!

when typing in email addresses to send to, yahoo helps by bringing up list of email addresses to choose from in a drop down menu. It brings up all addresses ever used with yahoo – even if that address has been changed or deleted from yahoo contacts. how do I delete the unwanted addresses from the drop down box so I don’t inadvertently choose one that is no longer good?

Whenever I open an email today, I’m getting this dialog box:

We were unable to save your preferecens. Please try again

YES, that is how it is spelled! Makes me think about a virus, but everything scanned ok.

I also noticed that the advertisement at the top is not showing, I think it might be trying to save a cookie for yieldmanager.com or something.

I just installed the latest updates from Microsoft for XP.

Thanks

Both my friend and I are very frustrated because we cannot go any where to change any settings to keep our forwarded emails from going out as an attachment. I like to clean up my forwards and remove all the names before I resend them. There is no way to do this now except to copy and paste them into a new compose email. If there is another way to do this please email me and let me know. I do not like you new system. I even went over to my friends to try and show her how to delete all the addresses she sends to me. No luck.
I will appriciate any help you can give me.

Yahoo mail bugs
1 More and more often now, my email gets sent when I am not even half way finished. Rebooting helps, but today afte rebooting my letter transmitted when it was about half finished. This looks really unprofessional at the receiving end? Yahoo does not have a bug department that I can find.

2 Lately when I am writing a letter and click back to a website to get exact information and click back to my letter. The letter is gone except for the recipient’s name.

3 Printing yahoo letters results in much of the text overflowing the righthand of the screeen. It is a nuisance to copy & paste the yahoo letter into Word and print it from there.

4 I don’t think Yahoo cares about things like this, or they would have a clear avenue of feedback.

I’ve had a yahoo email acct for about 10 yrs. I recently changed to ymail because my old acct was starting to get hundreds of spam mails daily. Now on ymail, I can’t seem to get some emails, especially from bellsouth.net. No one can seem to tell me why. Bellsouth tells me it’s a yahoo problem. I even have made filters for all these email addresses. I’m now using the paid email at ymail and still no better. I called and they referred me to the yahoo postmaster and he referred me here.

I’ve had the same problem as Robert for the last week or so. Right in the middle of typing an email, sometimes it just sends. It does look very unprofessional on the receiving end. Robert, the only solution I can come up with is to NOT put anything in the TO line until you’re through typing the email. Then it won’t know who to send to. But it’s funny…….when I remember to do that, it never tries to send the email before I’m through.

Ryan, any clue what’s going on here?

Before the changes, if I remember correctly, if you marked a message as Spam it sent it to the blocked addresses, didn’t it? That is not happening now. I delete those that come into the Spam folder and also those that come through to my InBox that are Spam….but they are never added to the Blocked Address site. Do we have to manually put email addresses we want blocked on the Blocked Address site? Again, a change that makes us have to take extra steps to do something that was easily taken care of before the changes.

A few days ago I registered for Tagged. What’s nice is that besides having email, they also have chat rooms, profiles, etc. They have just changed the chat room format. I wished they had left it alone. Now when I go to a chat room there I have no place to type in my message to the room. I have even tried to minimize the room, but that makes the room go away. There are lots of people chatting there. I don’t understand why I have this problem. If there is anybody here that has Tagged, I would like to have their opinion.

I figured out how to fix the chat room in tagged. I changed the % thingy in the bottom right corner. Then I was able to get to the arrows and move the room up so I could type in it. I had gotten a repy from yahoo on what to do, but it was very complicated. Luckily I was able to fix the problem myself.

How come there’s still no place to suggest new features?

The biggest annoyance in yahoo mail is that when I search for something it searches through all my folders instead of just the current one, and to narrow it to just one folder I have to click on something afterwards. Why can’t I just search for “-from joe@example.com +inbox” (that syntax would look familiar to anyone who ever used mh). Just below that is that search doesn’t do anything until I hit the search button – why can’t it incrementally filter the current view as I type, the way my desktop mail client does?

I hate the new FLAG option and the fact that the drop down list only has the options of reading FLAGGED MAIL or UNREAD MAIL. What happened to the Addressbook icon? That allowed me to know that the e-mail was from someone I knew. What happed to the choich of seeing just the mail from UNKNOWN, in the drop down list? That allowed me to further weed out suspicious mail. FLAG options do not allow me to protect my Computer. Now, I can’t see at a glance if I need to add someone to my adressbook or mark them as span. I am so dissappointed. I use to use the old features to check my mail before I imported them into OE on my home computer. It just cost me $79 to get a virus, embedded in an e-mail, off of my computer. It was added to an e-mail I would have marked as spam, using your older version. I am livid, to say the least.

Hi there

A while ago I decided to use Outlook as my email interface as I wasn't content with the old yahoo design and functionality. Now the new yahoo mail is excellent, I would like to move my email back there again but as I didn't keep a copy of the messages on the server, it would involve forwarding several hundred messages back to the server.

In your future updates could you please allow the uploading of a PST file back up to the Yahoo mail servers. I think this would be useful for existing customers but also to attract new customers – at present if a Gmail user for example wishes to switch over, there is no way of importing his existing files and folders. Surely this would be an excellent marketing tactic to entice new users.

Thanks
Richard
