When it’s time to change, you’ve got to rearrange … the blog

In the immortal words of the Brady kids:
“Autumn turns to winter and then winter turns to spring,
its not just a season, you know its goes for everything.”
So here I am to announce that the Yahoo! Mail blog has undergone some changes. Some you can probably see pretty easily, but others may be a little less obvious. I rolled out the changes last night, and will be making some other minor updates in the next week or so, but here are the highlights.
The most obvious change is the overall look. The header and colors are updated, and the whole blog is a little wider. I hope you all like the look.
Probably the most important changes though, are to the Comments section. We’ve added functionality for threaded comments. This means that if someone wants to respond directly to an earlier comment, they can do so and it will appear with the original.
This should make it much easier for me to address certain questions, as well as make it easier for all of you to share your thoughts and advice with each other.
Another big change to Comments is the fact that any comments from me will be highlighted. In the past you could look for my pic, but this will make it so much easier to find responses.
There will be more tweaks in the coming weeks, but those are the biggies. If you run across any glitches feel free to email them to me directly. In the meantime … don’t fight the tide, come along for the ride.

Here is an example of the new administrator comments.

And of course an example of a threaded response (that isn’t by an administrator).

this is cool.
can’t use an email address like libérté@yahoo.com?

The added functionality for the threaded comments is great, and makes it much easier to follow certain lines of discussion. I wish this was more widespread throughout the web. I hope this will be central to the way Yahoo plans to make itself more social in the coming months.

Yep, looks much better than the old diggs. Might have to set up something like this in my work space.

Good to see that your priorities are in the right place: spruce up the blog while sending boilerplate ‘we hope you love our new features’ responses to people complaining about loss of functionality with the updated classic mail.

I have used Yahoo as my home page for many years, with news feeds and Yahoo mail.
I had no serious problems until some cretin recently changed it.
Now the spam filter doesn’t work at all, it is hard for me to read, and it just looks bad.
I WANT MY OLD YAHOO BACK.
I have decided to start the tedious search for a new home page and mail server.

Me too. I WANT MY OLD YAHOO BACK.

On the New Yahoo…….Stupid Question……..would someone explain to me the difference in Bookmarks and my IE Favorites? Are they the same thing? I’ve tried to read the Tutorials but the pages “aren’t available”.
If the bookmarks and my favorites are the same thing, what is the advantage to having bookmarks on My Yahoo home page when they are right at the top of my IE screen under Favorites.
If there is an advantage is there an easy way to not delete them from my Favorites but to also add them to Bookmarks on my home page?
Thanks for any help or suggestions. And remember you’re talking to a computer dummy!

If I understand your question correctly, the Yahoo Bookmarks are available to you from any computer with Internet access, whereas your favorites in IE are stored only on the computer you are using at the time. Add Bookmarks to your Yahoo page if you want them to be available to you from any computer. No need to delete them from your favorites list. If you seldom use another computer, there is little need to copy favorites to Yahoo Bookmarks.

Please fix the Search issue with ALL yahoo accounts. You can’t search old mails (like more than a few months old). This last piece of Yahoo is the only thing many people still come to yahoo. Can’t you see the urgency of this? Stop wasting time on new features but get the basic stuff working first!!! I can deal with all the Spams but losing the Search feature is really a deal breaker. Complain to Yahoo Help will fix only one account at a time! Man, how can Yahoo degraded so much in so little time.

I like the new look of Ymail Blog. Nice job!

Has anyone had anything odd happen when you update to the new Firefox (update 3.01 or something like that). My yahoo mail doesn’t act like it did before (can’t move e-mails from the spam folder, the only option is to delete them; e-mails don’t highlight when you click on the square; there’s no buttons to move e-mails to a different folder, etc.)

Why do I and many others get a blank page when we try to cancel our Mail Plus subscriptions?
Are Yahoo deliberately trying to stop their customers cancelling ?
I’ve sent numerous emails to customer support but they never answer the questions I ask.

Fix Yahoo Mail search!!! For God’s sakes, what good is unlimited storage space if you can’t find anything???
Or let yourselves get bought by Microsoft, so I can just leave you for good.

When you changed the blog URL, why didn’t you use a redirect on the old URL? I placed the links to the Mail and Group blogs and Moderator Central on my toolbar for easy use, but today I discovered that the Y mail blog link didn’t work– a redirect wouldn’t have left me wondering where in H the blog disappeared to!
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm
RRR,
The redirect should be working. Can you tell me what URL you had stored in your bookmarks?

I am copying/pasting a comment from an earlier post. I absolutely concur…….would it be possible to have the option of New Folder in the drop down list of folders?
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Cheryl,
Do you mean a folder within a folder?

July 23rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
This is so annoying……..Ryan, please go to User Tip: Send messages to folders with a single keystroke topic: Read the first comment by AK Wong from July 10 at 6:34 PM. That is what I’m trying to ask you about.

Hi Cheryl,
I’ve passed that along to the PM (product manager) and I’ll let you know if there is any news on it.
