Yep, don’t miss a special opportunity to chat with the head of our Anti-Abuse team, Mark, and share all things spammy. Mark is anxious to hear your thoughts and answer some of your questions about how to reduce spam.
You can pre-submit questions by signing into the workshop early, or you can sign in during the event and submit them live. The timing will be from 4-5PM PT. We look forward to seeing you there!
Also don’t forget to submit your pics or videos highlighting where you’ve been while accessing your YMail. The deadline for submissions is today and I’ll be sending out rewards within the next two weeks.

In the past couple of weeks I have received a huge increase in spam that is going into my Yahoo inbox and not getting caught by Yahoo’s spam filters. Is there any way I can personally edit my own spam filters? For example, I know that I never need an email with “Cialis” in the subject line or “Bill Clinton” as the sender (somehow I doubt it’s really him emailing me). I also don’t need emails for “singles” or to “make money fast”. It would be great it I can change my own account to filter emails with these buzz words. Does that capability already exist?
Since I set up several different filters, very few of the spam items are actually showing up in my Inbox. By leaving my Spam box on so I can check what goes in there each time I turn my computer on, I am impressed with how much of it is being stopped.
It is amazing that the same spammers will send you the same messages several times a day. If you don’t have filters set up, do try it. Go to mail options on top right, then click on the filters option and everything else is explained.
I just now find that the ability to Search has been restored! I hope this was planned and deliberate–i.e., that you know what was wrong and did something to fix it. If so, thank you very much indeed.
I would think a lot more kindly of Yahoo Mail, if problems were addressed; it’s been several weeks now that two have persisted, despite being reported repeatedly.
1. Search will only look at the past very few weeks of emails; I rely very heavily on that ability, and am really bothered by its failure.
2. Ability to access “home” email, in my case OE, is gone–I get only an error message, “The following error occurred when fetching your external mail: lastUnsupported”
I don’t object to things going wrong–they do; but to the lack of any visible effort to address them, and let us know what’s being done.
Where and how do I set up a preview pane? I use that in Outlook to make sure I know who I am sending to the Spam folder…
Is there a transcript of the chat available?
Perhaps he can work on the blasted 421/451 deferred issue that is killing numerous legitimate web businesses.
I can only imagine how his future ideas for blocking spam will result in yahoo being more useless as a mail provider (ANY false positives make a mail account less than effective…UNDERLIVERED FALSE POSITIVES mean that a mail account is useless and undependable).
OOPS, I meant @Donnie Duncan July 30th, 2008 at 2:17 pm.
@Rob July 30th, 2008 at 2:01 pm, The multiple sign in problem has been resolved, according to Ryan.
This is not a Yahoo specfic problem, nor eBay. I had the very same thing happen to my hotmail account about 2 weeks ago. It also hijacked my windows mesenger. I ran spybots and defender, all the programs I could to wipe my computer of bugs, plus I sent a “legitimate” email from me apologizing to all. So far no more problems.
Ever since going to the new Yahoo Beta mail, I’ve been flooded with countless numbers of spam emails. I didn’t have this kind of problem with the old Yahoo mail. What gives? I love the preview pane, as it’s a life saver. I just want the spam to GO AWAY!!! And don’t tell me I need to upgrade like you told my wife to. It cost her $20 a year. She went to gmail and hasn’t had any problems. In fact, Gmail is now her primary provider, and yahoo is a secondary provider. And upgrading hasn’t helped hardly at all! Besides, we all know what Spam is made from …
How about this issue that I encountered today – eBay was able to access my entire yahoo address book, send a spam email to everyone in there, and then delete all my contacts. I was able to get my contacts back to send an apology email only by clicking on the option for finding contacts that have been deleted. How the heck did any outside company access my address book!?!?!?! I think I’m done with Yahoo mail, which is sad b/c I’ve been a user for about 10 years.
Ryan, I know you said you were aware there was a problem with the sign-on reminder………but it goes further than that. If you compose an email and hit send, you get the prompt to sign in AND THEN THE EMAIL YOU COMPOSED IS GONE. If delete, forward, reply functions work, you get a sign in prompt each time. There also seems to be something else going on…….send, delete, forward, save as draft don’t seem to be working the majority of the time. I’m having to compose emails in Word and save them to copy/paste back into emails as some date after this is fixed. Whatever is going on is practically rendering Yahoo Mail unusable.
I am having to sign in every time I delete an email. that is anoying.
Yahoo claims to be tough on spam – not true! I have been getting two spam emails everyday, one in the morning then one in the evening, that has a forged Yahoo email address (domains key OK) and a Geocities.com link for a sexually explicit website. The Yahoo email address and link is totally different in each spam email. Until recently, every one of these spam emails was delivered to my Inbox, I send every one of these spam messages to spam@uce.gov, spamcop.com, abuse@geocities, and abuse@yahoo.com. Yahoo must have put a filter in to direct the spam to my Spam folder, which is where it goes now. I would like to be able to block any messages with a link to Geocities.com.
Hi Ryan,
Can you please start a new thread about the ongoing Email Search functionality issues? Customer Care directed me to the Yblog for updates, but after finding no relevant information, I was told that most (but not all) issues are posted here.
Since the agent eventually confirmed that this is a system-wide issue, I’m sure a significant number of Yahoo mail users would appreciate being kept up to date on the progress made my the Engineering team to restore this vital service.
Thanks!
