New email addresses for all my friends!

For many of you this may not be all that exciting (heck, if you are reading the Yahoo! Mail product blog it’s reasonable to assume you have a Yahoo! Mail account already) but for a lot of people out there getting that perfect email address has proven to be a bit of a white whale. Even I had to settle for ymailblog1 because someone had already snapped up ymailblog. Well that ends right now (or actually in the next hour or so), because…

What’s Old is New, Just for You

rocketmail

Ever tried to sign up for a new email account, only to find that the name you want is unavailable? We hear you – as the most popular email service in the world, Yahoo! Mail has more than a quarter of a billion users worldwide* – that’s a LOT of email addresses in use already. With that in mind, we’re making millions of desirable email addresses available today with the launch of two shiny new domains: ymail.com and rocketmail.com.

If “rocketmail” rings a bell, it’s because it’s “vintage” Internet. Back in the 90s, RocketMail was one of the very first free Webmail services – Yahoo! acquired it in 1997 and built the first version of Yahoo! Mail based on RocketMail technology. Some of the original RocketMail users chose to keep their RocketMail IDs to show that they had been among the first users of Webmail. Now, like so many beloved classics that are hip again – cupcakes, big sunglasses, Indiana Jones, The New Kids on the Block – RocketMail is back for a new generation to enjoy.

These new domains will offer the same great Yahoo! Mail experience – like unlimited storage, integrated instant messaging, free text messaging, and localized versions around the world. And as always, a Yahoo! email address works for everything across Yahoo!, from checking Mail to using Messenger, Flickr, Groups, Finance, and more. The added bonus is that with these two new domains, you’ll have the chance to land your perfect email address to help reflect who you are – which is what the majority of you are looking for according to a recent Harris Interactive survey.**

So whether your style is brand spanking new (ymail.com), hip vintage (rocketmail.com) or comfortable classic (yahoo.com), surf on over to http://new.mail.yahoo.com/addresses and get that email address you always wanted.

John Kremer
Vice President, Yahoo! Mail

*According to ComScore media metrix, April 2008
** In a survey of 2,035 online adults conducted by Harris Interactive, 56% of respondents indicated they somewhat to strongly agree with the statement that they want their email address to reflect who they are.

It seems like YAHOO has total control of ATT and all the other companies that were bound together. Now my new ATT DSL has to accept YAHOO or I dont have DSL. I am looking for a way to get DSL without having to pay YAHOO to sell info about me. Yes they do. Read the EULA and privacy agreements. HELP HELP HELP.

Sorry, this is kind of related but not exactly (I just couldn’t figure out how/where else to post an yahoomail related question.)

Over time, I’ve signed up for more than one address for a specific task. I’m now trying to streamline/consolidate my accounts. The problem is I can’t remember them all and I can’t figure out how to find them.

Can I just concentrate on those that I do and figure that the unused accounts will just be “purged” at some point. Does Yahoo have a policy on that?

    thanks for your help

I like my new rocketmail but want to keep my old yahoo mail for the time being. Messenger is set to log me into the old one. But sometimes, for some reason, it insists on logging me into the new one. Also sometimes when working in the old one, I click on a folder and am taken to rocket mail! Is this an ff3 issue or yahoo? It’s infuriating! Ps I tried keeping logged in to one and not the other and that doesn’t work.

    Hi Ryan,
I am one of those vintage original Rocketmail users who has a Yahoo! ID of xxxxxxs.rm with primary Yahoo! Mail Address of xxxxxxs@rocketmail.com and of course have to use alternate email address for all yahoogroups emails. The Yahoo mail still says “Your Yahoo! Mail account is no longer active.
Unfortunately, we cannot reactivate your account because: Yahoo! Mail does not support the reactivation of rocketmail accounts. Please sign up for a new Yahoo! Mail account. Thank you.”
I tried to go and create xxxxxxs@rocketmail.com but it said the id was already used. Is it someone elses or is it used because it is mine but I can’t use it?

I will try to figure out how to ask a Yahoo mail support question too.
    Thank you

Having to type in @ymail.com or @rocketmail.com every … single … time is a real irritant!! Why not allow ‘username y’ or ‘username r’ respectively for ‘username@ymail.com’ or ‘username@rocketmail.com’? There is no syntax confusion since a space is not allowed in a username. This will make life so much easier for thousands of people.

    Melvin,

I edited your last comment because it contained actual email addresses (don’t want people getting spammed because they are reading the blog). The answer to your questions, and a few others, are in a new post. The short answers to your questions are:
    -
    1) Nope
    2) In theory, yes…in practice, it’s a gamble
    -
Please check out the newer post for the longer versions.

OK, I got a question that Yahoo has not answered when I emailed them.

I had a Yahoo email account “example1@yahoo.com” for a very long time and my Yahoo ID is “example1″. Recently I subscribed to “example@rocketmail.com”. Now:

    1) Can I merge the two accounts and use “example1″ as my Yahoo ID for my “example@rocketmail.com” email?

    2) If not, can I CLOSE the “example1″ account and then set up “example1″ as a YAHOO PROFILE for my “example@rocketmail.com” email? Will the system allow it? (I don’t want to end up with the Yahoo Profile telling me that “example1″ is taken up and make me regret closing my “example1″ account.)

    Regards

*Comment edited by blog admin to remove actual email addresses. Replaced with “example”.

    @JP

That’s what I’ve been saying all along. I can’t believe that Yahoo still doesn’t offer IMAP…

The fact that GMail can do it for free is making me very envious of anyone I know who has a Gmail account.

Is it really a big deal that there are new “domains” available? It almost seems like a distraction from that fact that they don’t offer IMAP… at any price.

  34. Kurt says:

    Hi,

Read the news about rocketmail.com coming back and tried to sign up using my old rocketmail ID – that was already taken. ok, so i logged into yahoo using my old xxx@rocketmail.com ID and that worked, but then, I get the following message:
Unfortunately, we cannot reactivate your account because:
Yahoo! Mail does not support the reactivation of rocketmail accounts. Please sign up for a new Yahoo! Mail account. Thank you.

So what can I do? I’d love to have my old rocketmail ID back, you are telling me I can use rocketmail again, but right there it says, I can no longer reactive…hmmmmm….

    Thanks for your help!
    cheers

I was very excited to finally be able to get the email names I have wanted and my family has wanted. I spent time setting up each account, verifying it through the alternate email addresses, etc. I used the Ymail domain exclusively. Nine out of ten do not work…same complaint as all my friends are saying…wrong password. Disappointing to say the least…I hope that Yahoo and Ryan can make a quick fix before lost confidence in Yahoo.

Google provides free IMAP … wake up guys!

  46. Ryan says:

    Hi everyone,
    -
Very sorry to hear about some of the registration problems reported here. It turns out that the number of existing Yahoo! users who went out to register new accounts (and in some cases multiple accounts to secure IDs for family and friends) FAR exceeded what we had anticipated.
