New email addresses for all my friends!

For many of you this may not be all that exciting (heck, if you are reading the Yahoo! Mail product blog it’s reasonable to assume you have a Yahoo! Mail account already) but for a lot of people out there getting that perfect email address has proven to be a bit of a white whale. Even I had to settle for ymailblog1 because someone had already snapped up ymailblog. Well that ends right now (or actually in the next hour or so), because…
———————————————
What’s Old is New, Just for You

Ever tried to sign up for a new email account, only to find that the name you want is unavailable? We hear you – as the most popular email service in the world, Yahoo! Mail has more than a quarter of a billion users worldwide* – that’s a LOT of email addresses in use already. With that in mind, we’re making millions of desirable email addresses available today with the launch of two shiny new domains: ymail.com and rocketmail.com.
If “rocketmail” rings a bell, it’s because it’s “vintage” Internet. Back in the 90s, RocketMail was one of the very first free Webmail services – Yahoo! acquired it in 1997 and built the first version of Yahoo! Mail based on RocketMail technology. Some of the original RocketMail users chose to keep their RocketMail IDs to show that they had been among the first users of Webmail. Now, like so many beloved classics that are hip again – cupcakes, big sunglasses, Indiana Jones, The New Kids on the Block – RocketMail is back for a new generation to enjoy.
These new domains will offer the same great Yahoo! Mail experience – like unlimited storage, integrated instant messaging, free text messaging, and localized versions around the world. And as always, a Yahoo! email address works for everything across Yahoo!, from checking Mail to using Messenger, Flickr, Groups, Finance, and more. The added bonus is that with these two new domains, you’ll have the chance to land your perfect email address to help reflect who you are – which is what the majority of you are looking for according to a recent Harris Interactive survey.**
So whether your style is brand spanking new (ymail.com), hip vintage (rocketmail.com) or comfortable classic (yahoo.com), surf on over to http://new.mail.yahoo.com/addresses and get that email address you always wanted.
John Kremer
Vice President, Yahoo! Mail
*According to ComScore media metrix, April 2008
** In a survey of 2,035 online adults conducted by Harris Interactive, 56% of respondents indicated they somewhat to strongly agree with the statement that they want their email address to reflect who they are.

Is there a way to combine two different yahoo mail id’s into one? I was unable to get the user name I wanted when I signed up for yahoo mail 10 years back, but I was able to snatch one today with ymail. yay !!! It will be nice if Yahoo can provide an option of merging these two accounts into one, so that I don’t have to manage 2 separate accounts.
It’s nice for users who are signing up for the first time, but for existing users the additional maintenance of yet another account outweighs the benefits of having a desired user name.

Any idea when you will unblock my IP address so I can get a shiny new email address?
June 19th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
I was able to signup for the Ymail account. Apparently, you have to refresh the page to see the drop-down options (ymail and rocketmail). Not sure what’s with the comments though. I saw a few comments that were deleted.
June 19th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Yup, works for me now. Woohoo!
June 19th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Sorry, this appears to be an invalid Yahoo! ID. Please try another.
June 19th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
KC, when I hit “sign up for my account,” the page refreshes and it shows name@yahoo.com is taken (instead of name@rocketmail, like it showed when I was filling out info.)
June 19th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I signed up for a Rocketmail account just so I could see the features of that Yahoo site. Guess what??????? All the features I loved on my old Classic Yahoo - which have now been removed - are available on my Rocketmail account. What is going on? If the features were so bad they needed to be revamped on Classic Yahoo why are you offering them on these new domains?
It does me no good because I have way too many email files and contacts and way too many people to get in touch with to bother to change my main email to the Rocketmail account.
And I suspect you’ll decided to fix it also before you’re done messing with everything.
I do have to ask if John Kremer
Vice President, Yahoo! Mail has any idea how upset his Yahoo customers are?????
June 19th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Megan, try closing and re-opening the browser or a different browser. I had the same problem but and had to refresh it a couple of times to see the option. As a last resort, try to empty your browser cache and see if that works… the page is probably served from your temporary cache. Good Luck !!

Ryan, I know it seems we’re shooting the messenger when we really are shooting the message! I have mulitiple Yahoo accounts now….I think 5 and on all the “free” accounts the features remain….on the one I pay for, all the features have changed.
On a serious, trying to not fuss note, does someone, anyone know how upset Yahoo customers are?
Is that being taken into consideration?

Cheryl,

I speak with the folks in charge of Classic about this type of feedback daily. It’s tricky because some changes that you (and others on this blog) are reacting violently to, are things that the vast majority of users are actually happy with. In other cases there are things we think we can tweak furher to make even more people happy. In still others there are workarounds and other things that will help users replicate what they already liked.
-
If you’d like to email me with details of the specific changes, and how they have impacted how you use Mail, I’d love to read them.

Signed up to get a YMail domain, worked just fine. I also have a yahoo mail acct.
Strange behavior tho. I log out of @yahoo.com; I log into the ymail.com, and i am in that mailbox…yet when I click the hyperlink for Yahoo inside the mail program…..surprise, I get the yahoo.com email account showing.
Using FF3, Vista.
I also verified the new address and someone ended up with some Yahoo New Zealand offer.
Hmmm.

Outgoing SMTP doesn’t work for on Ymail accounts for Y! Plus Subscribers.
I have a Y!Plus subscription b/c of my DSL provider (Verizon). I linked my new Ymail account to it and it is now a Y! Plus account; however, the outgoing SMTP server does not recognize my @ymail.com address or password.
June 19th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Thanks for the link Ryan, but my account is almost 10 years old and will be difficult to reach out everyone and let them know that my address changed… plus there are a ton of website subscriptions that I have my yahoo id associated with. I hope you guys can take this as a feature enhancement and add to yahoo mail. You guys did this with SBC and Y! mail at one point and so don’t imagine adding this feature to be very difficult.

June 19th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I can’t sign up.
First, I selected ymail from the dropdown menu, but when I subumitted the information it automatically changed the domain to yahoo.com and told me it was taken.
No I can’t even access the page. I keep getting a 999 error. I have been checking back on and off for the last 2 hours or so and nothing has change…just a 999 error. Frustrating because I really want to register a ymail.com domain.

June 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Now that @rocketmail.com accounts are back, are you going to allow old rocketmail users to reactivate their old email accounts? I lost mine years ago due to inactivity during an extended vacation… I just logged in using my rocketmail address, and it still says that rocketmail accounts can’t be reactivated and to sign up for a new Yahoo ID.

I like my revamped Yahoo Mail Classic with one exception. For reasons I don’t understand, when I start typing in the addressee’s name, the auto-complete box appears *underneath* the text box where I type in the body of my note. Almost all the auto-complete box is obscured, and it’s impossible to use it to choose the right addressee. I can’t figure out how to communicate this problem the right way to the right people. Would you mind forwarding this on to someone who might know what’s going on? I certainly would appreciate it.

I’ve noticed that the Yahoo! Mail login screen has lately displayed an example login ID below the userid field which consists of an entire email address (free2rhyme@yahoo.com) rather than just the Yahoo! userid.
Nevertheless I’ve continued entering just my Yahoo! ID without the domain name when logging into mail.
But now with the advent of the rocketmail.com and ymail.com domains, am I going to need to enter a full email address when logging into mail?
If not, will it assume a national Yahoo! domain (e.g., yahoo.com) for the domain name?
Also, currently a Yahoo! ID such as user123 registered at yahoo.com prevents the same Yahoo! ID from being available at the other national Yahoo! domains. Will that be changing so that more userids are available worldwide?
June 19th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
This just made my day. Truth be told, I stopped using yahoo because I didn’t like my old school username and couldn’t get the username I wanted. Petty I know…but seriously, who wants random digits at the end of their username!
June 19th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I just figured out the 999 error was because of my IP address. It appears that for some reason Yahoo didn’t like my IP address and was blocking it. I used an anonymous proxy and was able to FINALLY sign up. If you are experiencing a 999 error, go here and sign up:

I have a Yahoo! Mail Plus account. Each time I compose a message, I can decide — via drop-down menu — which of my Y! free or paid mail addresses I want readers to see in their ‘From’ box. Is there any way I can now include my brand-new ymail.com address among the options — so I don’t have to sign out of one Yahoo! account and into another each time I want to use the @ymail address? That would be ideal. Thx.
June 19th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Do you know if it will be possible to forward your mail from @yahoo to one of the new domains @ymail with no cost? Thank you.
June 19th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
PS the other thing was, I signed up and put in my zip code…and it said THAT ZIP CODE IS NOT IN THE U.S. or something.
As I am fairly close to Yahoo itself in Sunnyvale, I am pretty sure I am still in the US.
I have an AT&T/Yahoo acct; (AT&T logo disappeared off of my version of Yahoo front door;) and I might just FWD mail to new acct..not sure.
But this is a great idea- I am sure the Gmail fanbois will be screaming you ripped them off—Gmail/Ymail; but who offered email first?
June 19th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Ryan,
I have a new @ymail adress and have just upgraded it to a Plus account. I would like to create an extra 2nd @ymail address under my Plus account, but it looks like you can’t do that. You can only create extra @yahoo address right now. Do you know whether this capability will be available soon? The @ymail address I want is available now and I’d like to secure it before it gets taken, and I don’t want to create another primary account to do that.
June 19th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Big ups to Kenneth for noticing the changes to the sign-in page. I was going to post about that a few weeks ago, but some people were worried that people might see predict today’s news before it was announced.
-
The way sign-in will work is…any yahoo.com ID can sign in either with the short or long version (as has always been the case, even though the sign-in sample only showed short version). Anyone with a ymail or rocketmail based ID will always have to use the long version.

It looks like many of you have questions about linking/joining/etc., so I’ll address a few of the most popular:
-
There is not any way to link or merge the accounts.
-
Users don’t have the option to create a ymail or rocketmail address as a alternate/secondary alias email. Only as a new account.
-
Just as before, users can forward or POP email to/from their accounts, but the same rules apply (if Yahoo! Mail you must be Plus to POP elsewhere).
-
Lastly, you can add the email address from another account to use as a “sent from” address, but that doesn’t link the accounts.

This is a great offering. I was able to get a nice ymail.com address. Now if IMAP access is ever offered I may consider using it.
June 19th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
You all remind me of cingular wireless. You all are raising the bar so high that nobody can get over it. Everything you are making improvements to doesn’t work for a lot of people that’s paying for a service, features I have on my SBCglobal account (homepage) I can not get on the free account. If you can’t merge the old account information into the new account what good it is changing anything. I finally can get the address name I have tried to have Yahoo let me have for about 10 years, but it is not worth having it if I can not merge contact information between the old and new accounts. So how do I cancel the new address I just got so somebody else can use it if they want.
June 19th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
John, I am with you 100% on this and your comments reflect my sentiments expressed early on in this discussion.
Yahoo should provide a way to link these accounts to help customers like us. How many here have more than one Y! mail accounts and need this feature. Can I see your hands?
I am not trying to chastise Yahoo, just want to get our voices heard.

To help Ryan out a little, giving responses to all these comments… there’s a work-around to using two mail account under one.
- REGISTER YOUR NEW ADDRESS / ACCOUNT
Pick your brand new rocketmail.com or ymail.com address and set up the account with your details. Welcome to Yahoo! Mail.
- ENABLE POP ACCESS
I’m not sure if this is only available in the UK & Ireland, but if you click to Options > Mail Options > Pop Access & Forwarding
- LOG OUT OF YOUR NEW ACCOUNT, BACK INTO THE OLD
This is where we sign into your ‘old’ or current account - the one that you want to receive your email on. For example, I want to receive my @ymail.com email on my @yahoo.co.uk address, so I login to my @yahoo.co.uk at this stage.
- SET UP POP IMPORTING
Navigate to ‘Options > Mail Options > Mail Addresses’.
Click on ‘Add’
Enter ‘Account Name’ - this is not that important
Enter your name and new email address (ie, bob@ymail.com)
Enter the ‘Mail Server’ as pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Enter the ‘Username’ as your new email address
Enter the ‘Password’ as your new password.
Leave all the other options as they are.
Click ‘Setup Mail Server’
- VALIDATE YOUR ACCOUNT
Following the steps above will send an email to your new email address with an activation link, which grants your old email address permission to fetch email from your new email address.
Log into your new account and fetch this email. Copy the link to your clipboard and log out.
Log back into your original account and then paste the link into the address bar and finish the final steps on-screen.
- RECEIVING EMAIL
Unfortunately, hitting ‘Check Mail’ doesn’t check both accounts. It only checks your original one. To check your new one, you have to hit the ‘Check Other Mail’ option. Like so:

June 20th, 2008 at 9:31 am
@Vikki,
-
If someone has a traditional Yahoo! ID (with yahoo.com) domain, their ID is just the portion to the left of the @ symbol.
-
If you sign up and create a ymail or rocketmail ID, then your ENTIRE email address is actually your Yahoo! ID.

Never heard back from you or anyone about the email listing what’s not working in the “new” Classic UI.
Also, in this post you replied to a comment by noting that “…some changes that you (and others on this blog) are reacting violently to, are things that the vast majority of users are actually happy with. In other cases there are things we think we can tweak furher [sic] to make even more people happy. In still others there are workarounds and other things that will help users replicate what they already liked.”
Here’s the deal: Give us an option to “Leave Things As Is”. Then, go off and make whatever changes you folks think will make “more people happy”. If people want your changes, they can turn off the “LTAI” switch or not.
So far, nothing you changed makes me happy:
1) I cannot read the font you selected for headers. Did you think that makes people happy?
2) I cannot display full headers at all times. Why does anyone at Yahoo care what I want to display?
3) I cannot forward email with full headers, yet Yahoo knows this is mandatory to report spam and phishing. Did you take away this feature to make people happy?
I can go on, but you’ll just delete the comment as soon as you see it. Just don’t fool yourselves that you are making any people happy when you change things that work just fine. “Don’t fix what ain’t broke” is a fine rule of life.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Royal-Girl,
-
Are you trying to add a ymail address as a secondary/alias in your existing account? If so, that is the problem. Users currently can’t use ymail or rocketmail IDs as secondary addresses (only as new accounts).
-
To answer raz’s question on the same topic, we are looking into incorporating that as an option, but also don’t want all of the new IDs to be snatched up by existing users and be right back where we started…with people unable to get the ID they want.
-
But yes, we are looking into how we can make it easier for people to get, and use, the ID they’ve always wanted.

hi Ryan
I created my email @ymail.com account and after one hour it stop working. I tried to reset password but it said I should send email to customer support which I did. They are stating I have violate the yahoo TOS. as it is surprising for me because I did not send a single email to anyone just put forwarding in my current pop account and received a single mail. Is there anyway I can activate my account again? because I waited to grab this id and I dont want to loose it.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I have the exact same problem as Irfan. I signed up for a new @ymail.com address and I was unable to sign in or reset the password. I contacted customer support and they said I violated the TOS and told me I had to fill out a form online reporting abuse so that the abuse people could try and fix the problem. I know this has happened for a lot of people. Will Yahoo be able to fix this without people having to contact the Yahoo abuse support for each address this has happened to? Thanks.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
I created a several YMAIL accounts for my family and a couple were also deactivated by Yahoo a few hours after I created it. And likewise, Yahoo’s customer support said I violated the TOS, specifically #6.
But after reading #6 of the TOS I know I haven’t violated it because I have not even used the account yet. Plus the account I created for my son has not even been logged in yet so it totally does not make sense.
I too had to submit a form justifying that I did not break the TOS. I hope Yahoo fixes this because obviously too many people are affected and the claim isn’t even legit.

Are you guy’s serious ?! how can I violted a TOS, without using the email address I`ve created ?! … I`ve just added some IDs via Yahoo Messanger and never sent 1 single email… also, my brother siad to me that hes account is also not working, the same issue, but not after 3 hours… this was much faster after ~1 hour… he only got the reat de welcome email from the Yahoo Mail Bot and configured the spamguard…
Come`one Ryan, TOS #6 refers for violating the upload, send, recived content… but some of us didn’t have the change to send, upload, recive any email/photos & stuff..
Please help us out Ryan.

I have registered for new ymail.com and rocketmail.com email ID’s but after 6-8 hours when i try to login with same username and password it says:
Invalid ID or password.
Please try again using your full Yahoo! ID.
Similar error is coming up for other emails on domains @ymail.com and @rocketmail.com of my friends too.
when I try to reset the password it says:
Sorry, your password can’t be reset online. To reset the password for this account, please contact Yahoo! CustomerCare
Moreover, I am not able to activate/confirm my alternate email id. Sameproblem comes over there.
It seems either some part of the @ymail.com and @rocketmail.com email accounts database is not accessible or being disconnected.
Please do reply me back with solution!

Can i have alias to existing account? (I think no:)).

Count me in as another TOS #6 issue for 3 new ymail.com accounts that I never got a chance to use.
Yahoo clearly dropped the ball on this as it’s obviously affecting a lot of people with new (and unused) ymail.com accounts.
June 21st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
anyone has any idea why this login problems happening with the new ymail and rocketmail accounts? as previously stated I also tried sending mail to my new account, and it says the account is disabled… no official word on this?
June 21st, 2008 at 6:39 pm
@mk, as you can see your not the only one who has this problem, it seems that the answer is TOS paragraph #6 …
Yahoo has disable our accounts for a time, because they belive that we violated that paragraph…
June 21st, 2008 at 7:09 pm
yeah i read those… but what i understand is, that TOS #6 whatever does not really refer to the problem we are having, so i am looking if there is a more clear official information about that or anyone that had somehow got the issue fixed.
June 21st, 2008 at 9:42 pm
What the hell?
I created only 1, YES, ONLY 1 ymail account and I got .Net passport to allow me to use Live messenger.
Now I can’t login.
What is Yahoo thinking? You introduced this service yet you banned users because “you think” that we violated your TOS. Can’t you just make it 100% sure before you start banning any accounts?
So this is another reason why Google is so much better eh?
June 21st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
This is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously not ALL the users who had their ymail accounts disabled - mine included - violated Yahoo!’s TOS (I know I didn’t). In fact, I’m curious as to how it’s even possible to violate the TOS when many who signed up for ymail accounts didn’t even have time to USE the service, much less VIOLATE the terms of that service. I know I was planning on using my new ymail address, but had barely had the chance to sign in once and read the introductory email sent by Yahoo! before I could no longer access my account when I went to login the next day. Yahoo! needs to solve this major problem, and quickly, which involves enabling many accounts it has mistakenly suspended and/or otherwise disabled for no apparent reason. I know there are probably some small problems to be expected with new services but really a problem of this magnitude is simply inexcusable, and enough to make me seriously consider never using Yahoo! again.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:36 pm
add me to the list of people who are getting the:
invalid id/password message when trying to login.
i even clicked on the activation link after i created the ymail account, and when i reclick it now and put in the password, everything is blank (username and password field). all i did was send a test message to a friend, he got the email, and everything seemed fine. tried logging in the next day and that was it! no more ymail account! searched and searched (2 DAYS OF SEARCHING) for answers, but couldn’t find any. contacted yahoo, but haven’t gotten a response yet. I’M CRUSHED!!!!
they’d better not use the violated TOS 6 on me, cuz i read it and i violated absolutely nothing! who had a chance to violate anything… seriously.
someone in ymail must’ve been going power hungry, disabling accounts like there was no tomorrow!
June 22nd, 2008 at 6:48 am
Add me too to this login error of ymail. I clicked on the activate email link in my alternate email which is also yahoo and it brings me to a page showing my new ymail username but after I tried to key in my password, it brings me to a page which shows a blank login for yahoo mail. Can yahoo somehow fix this problem? Its been a couple of days and still no solution from them.
June 22nd, 2008 at 6:51 am
Yahoo thought they were so smart offering new addresses at ymail/rocketmail. Except you can’t log in to ever use them. TOS violation indeed.
Should have let Microsoft buy them and put them out of their misery…they can’t even do email right anymore.
June 22nd, 2008 at 9:05 am
As far as i am concerned, ymail.com is working nicely. Thanks to Yahoo! for offering the new domain for email.
I think, yahoo should offer free pop and imap services to all its mail a/cs in line with the gmail.
Further, yahoo should also make Yahoo Go! 3 compatible with sony ericsson P1i phone.
June 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 am
I got the similar errors:
“Sorry, your password can’t be reset online. To reset the password for this account, please contact Yahoo! CustomerCare”
Even though I didn’t use my Yahoo!ID anytime, only registered and login one time, that’s all.
I’m very disappointed with Yahoo! Email Services. Bad and terrible services, that’s why their stocks’re going down.
Gmail is better.
June 22nd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
i have same errors
i created 2 @ymail.com
but 2 deactivated i cannot login with them
when Yahoo will fix that
June 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
there’s noting to fix Ahmad, those accounts will remain disable as long as Yahoo want’s to.
June 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
For all of you having the TOS problem, go to this form and fill it out. Explain the situation in the “Additional Information” section and Yahoo will take care of the situation regarding your new ymail or rocketmail account within 48 hours.
Make sure you use a different e-mail address from the one you are having a problem with in section 2. This will be the address they use to contact you when the situation has been resolved.
List the ID you are unable to log into in section 3. Enter the entire ID with the @ymail.com or @rocketmail.com
I was successful in getting my new IDs fixed, so hopefully it will work for you.
This is the form to fill out. Good luck.

Just wanted to add my voice here… it really sucks that you can’t merge two accounts. I’m in the IT business and this stuff ain’t rocket science.
If I have to go through the pain of migrating my account and informing everyone of the change.. I might as well switch to my gmail account.
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:13 am
I signed up a couple of ymail and rocketmail accounts for me and my family to get the names we wanted. Two of the ymail accounts allow me to log into Yahoo, but I can’t access their email. Any email sent ot these accounts is bounced back stating that there is no such user. In both cases, we can get to the profile pages that indeed confirms the email is xxxx.ymail.com but when clicking on any mail icon we are just looped back to sign-up. This condition started at first sign-up. Seems an email account was never established at sign-up and there is no way to do it now. What’s the use of a ymail.com account if I can’t send or receive mail???
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:14 am
Hi. I was thrilled about registering for a new email account under YMAIL, but now realize that for this new account I’m required to type in my full email address EVERY time I want to log in.
This stinks and is painful since we’re so used to entering the ID with-OUT typing in @yahoo.com.
Unfortunately for me, I’m seriously reconsidering whether to use the new Ymail account.
Unless! Does Yahoo plan to update thee page to do somekind of magic so we don’t have to type in an entire email address? Perhaps similar to MSN’s email page! At least it could remember the last ID entry.
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:33 am
Hi everyone,
-
Very sorry to hear about some of the registration problems reported here. It turns out that the number of existing Yahoo! users who went out to register new accounts (and in some cases multiple accounts to secure IDs for family and friends) FAR exceeded what we had anticipated.
-
We’ve updated our systems to accommodate these registration behaviors, and will be reactivating all impacted accounts today.

What’s to do ? fill out a form to you guys ?!

I was very excited to finally be able to get the email names I have wanted and my family has wanted. I spent time setting up each account, verifying it through the alternate email addresses, etc. I used the Ymail domain exclusively. Nine out of ten do not work…same complaint as all my friends are saying…wrong password. Disappointing to say the least…I hope that Yahoo and Ryan can make a quick fix before lost confidence in Yahoo.

Hi,
Read the news about rocketmail.com coming back and tried to sign up using my old rocketmail ID - that was already taken. ok, so i logged into yahoo using my old xxx@rocketmail.com ID and that worked, but then, I get the following message:
Unfortunately, we cannot reactivate your account because:
Yahoo! Mail does not support the reactivation of rocketmail accounts. Please sign up for a new Yahoo! Mail account. Thank you.
So what can I do? I’d love to have my old rocketmail ID back, you are telling me I can use rocketmail again, but right there it says, I can no longer reactive…hmmmmm….
Thanks for your help!
cheers

@JP
That’s what I’ve been saying all along. I can’t believe that Yahoo still doesn’t offer IMAP…
The fact that GMail can do it for free is making me very envious of anyone I know who has a Gmail account.
Is it really a big deal that there are new “domains” available? It almost seems like a distraction from that fact that they don’t offer IMAP… at any price.

OK, I got a question that Yahoo has not answered when I emailed them.
I had a Yahoo email account “example1@yahoo.com” for a very long time and my Yahoo ID is “example1″. Recently I subscribed to “example@rocketmail.com”. Now:
1) Can I merge the two accounts and use “example1″ as my Yahoo ID for my “example@rocketmail.com” email?
2) If not, can I CLOSE the “example1″ account and then set up “example1″ as a YAHOO PROFILE for my “example@rocketmail.com” email? Will the system allow it? (I don’t want to end up with the Yahoo Profile telling me that “example1″ is taken up and make me regret closing my “example1″ account.)
Regards

Melvin,

I edited your last comment because it contained actual email addresses (don’t want people getting spammed because they are reading the blog). The answer to your questions, and a few others, are in a new post. The short answers to your questions are:
-
1) Nope
2) In theory, yes…in practice, it’s a gamble

Having to type in @ymail.com or @rocketmail.com every … single … time is a real irritant!! Why not allow ‘username y’ or ‘username r’ respectively for ‘username@ymail.com’ or ‘username@rocketmail.com’? There is no syntax confusion since a space is not allowed in a username. This will make life so much easier for thousands of people.

Hi Ryan,
I am one of those vintage original Rocketmail users who has a Yahoo! ID of xxxxxxs.rm with primary Yahoo! Mail Address of xxxxxxs@rocketmail.com and of course have to use alternate email address for all yahoogroups emails. The Yahoo mail still says “Your Yahoo! Mail account is no longer active.
Unfortunately, we cannot reactivate your account because: Yahoo! Mail does not support the reactivation of rocketmail accounts. Please sign up for a new Yahoo! Mail account. Thank you.”
I tried to go and create xxxxxxs@rocketmail.com but it said the id was already used. Is it someone elses or is it used because it is mine but I can’t use it?
I will try to figure out how to ask a Yahoo mail support question too.
Thank you

Also sometimes when working in the old one, I click on a folder and am taken to rocket mail! Is this an ff3 issue or yahoo? It’s infuriating! Ps I tried keeping logged in to one and not the other and that doesn’t work.

Sorry, this is kind of related but not exactly (I just couldn’t figure out how/where else to post an yahoomail related question.)
Over time, I’ve signed up for more than one address for a specific task. I’m now trying to streamline/consolidate my accounts. The problem is I can’t remember them all and I can’t figure out how to find them.
Can I just concentrate on those that I do and figure that the unused accounts will just be “purged” at some point. Does Yahoo have a policy on that?
