FYI, people getting lastUnsupported alert dialog need to disable "Leave mail on POP server". I don't know why Yahoo is using a "prehistoric" and conceptually in accurate LAST command instead of UIDL: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2004-June/003775.html

first- check out my comment above. It works for me. I have put a shortcut on my desktop to fetch my external eMail with that method. Hope the other method will works soon again in a stable way.
Regarding your frustration: I agree- I have been again and again very frustrated with the Yahoo eMail service. Sometimes, I am wondering if the company went the same way as many big companies: 99% managers and 1% creative workers. It seems that the Yahoo email software is being developed by just one totally overworked person... I was tempted to switch to Google, but this is by far not what we are used to get from Yahoo in terms of GUI. Yahoo has done a great job in creating this awesome frontend (congratulation to the programmer), and I am amazed that this whole thing serves several hundred million people. Nevertheless, I am also using it for our business purposes and I expect a much more stable operation. I have no problem to pay twenty times as much as I'm paying now for my mail plus service, but I expect stable operations and a customer service that helps me promptly and not after ten iterations with cheap call center people.
So- Yahoo: Congratulations for what is there! Please make it usable for more professional users, although they might be a minority. The income from that should make an approrpiate team affordable.

update:
it seems to me that the speed of your internet connection plays a role here. I had problems to retrieve my POP3 eMail last week while at a very slow wireless internet connection. Now, back at a fast line, the Yahoo service works again as usual. It is puzzling to me, and maybe this is sporadic, but maybe it helps someone else.

I am also having the problem that Yahoo cannot fetch eMail from my external server- it is sporadic, though. I found a way to force the eMail fetch by this method:
1. goto Options -> mail options
2. -> accounts
3. select the account where you want to download emails from
4. click on 'Check Mail' there.
5. check your yahoo mail, here are your emails.
This may also fail, but it works more likely than the yahoo mail frontend
Hope it'll work for you, too
