2nd UPDATE: Issues retrieving from external accounts

As many of you are probably aware, users are still running into problems retrieving email from their external accounts. Our teams have been reviewing your submissions and analyzing the situation, however the top priority is restoring the original functionality you had.

At this time the plan is to roll back the recent changes to the external retrieval feature. The rollback has already started, and should take a few days to reach everyone. What this means is that your ability to retrieve from these accounts should be completely restored, however it also means that we will be rolling back the recently added option to use SSL. If you have added an account that requires SSL, retrieval from that account will no longer be possible.

Once the original functionality is restored, our teams will be re-examining the causes and will work on resolving them before attempting to rollout the changes again.

I’d like to thank everyone who has sent along their account details. I won’t be able to provide individual support, but your reports should help our engineers in their troubleshooting efforts. No additional reports are needed at this time, but should problems persist later in the week I will likely be soliciting reports again.

I will be back with further updates later in the week.

I haven’t been able to get my external mail in WEEKS! What on earth is going on? Why has there been no update since June 9? Please communicate!

  3. Chris Mackey says:

I’ve read through the variety of symptoms here, and I am confused. I’m guessing that there are several problems happening. I get:

Yahoo! Mail Error Form (Error Code 14)

…when I try to access external mail.

  4. Mike Shelly says:

It’s 15 June and I am still without email service which I use for my business. The least Yahoo could do would be to issue another update. The 9 June UPDATE by Ryan Knight spoke about a rollback that would take a few days to reach everyone. It’s been 6 days now. What’s up Ryan? Please give users without service a timeline. I would really appreciate it.

By the way, I cannot enter live chat. The password screen keeps on coming up. I submit my password and it comes up again w/o the password. Hmmmm.
    Best,
    Jim

I can deal with the crazy gas prices but not having my email that’s got me going nuts. I would say email me with any help of info but thats why were here please help us soon
    Thanks

  7. Carol says:

I still can’t pull in my yahoo email into outlook. This has been going on for days now so clearly any rollback did not work. Yahoo has more email problems and timeouts than any other email I’ve ever used. I don’t know why they can’t get this fixed.

  8. peggy says:

Not able to pull up email, can get to the screen that shows my inbox but then when I click on the emails to open it takes me to a screen that talks about my password expiration, cookies, etc. When doing all those things still keeps repeating the same screen. Any timeline when it will be fixed???

  10. Jim says:

Last week my downloads timed-out most of the time.
The day before yesterday I could not retreive any email at all.
Yesterday (12 June) things seemed to start working. There were no timeouts – downloads were slow, but there were no timeouts. It even seemed as though the spam filter started working much better.

Today I cannot download my email from my pop server at all. I’m getting this message:

    “Unfortunately, there was a problem:
POP server does not support LAST command. You may only retrieve POP mail from this server using “get all messages”.

Anyone know what this is about?

Unfortunately I use Yahoo for my business. Not receiving email for a day is bad news.

    Thanks.

  11. Charles Fortt says:

I’ve had a big increase in spam arriving in my Inbox rather than the spam folder and emails getting lost and unretrievable after they first arrived. I keep wondering if I’ve imagined them! What’s going on?

  12. jim says:

I have had a problem with this for the last 2 weeks and it now seems to be fixed. It seems to be reverted back to the way it was before the “upgrade” (downgrade) implementation and maybe even a touch faster at response. I just wanted to say thanks for getting this functional again. It was very frustrating but I’m happy to have it back up and functional.

Thank you and I look forward to the improvements with the SSL and improved spam guarding with POPs. Hopefully this can be done without slowing down the process to a snails pace with errors like it was doing.
    Thanks!

  13. Chris says:

I was getting an error that said approximately “another POP session may be active”.

    Now I am getting Error 14 :(

Stacy its not your computer..as I stated in my rant I have tried this on 3 different machines…and I am still stuck in the password loop…..by “other users” I meant other users of my domain’s email services thru yahoo..everyone else in our group can access email but me.

And still NO ONE at YAHOO is listening…paying customers are unable to access their email..I wonder if contacting CNN might generate some action?

  15. Stacy says:

Somebody above wrote this “however am now a week unable to access my Yahoo Small Business Domain email..all other users unaffected…but as the Admin of the site, I cannot log in..access email..nothing..this is over a week now for a service that I am paying for…and no access…and no help…and no resolution” I am having the same problem. I cannot open my email in Yahoo. I have 2 web sites hosted thru Yahoo & cannot open the email. I have emails I need to send out & everything. I have tried 2 different computers & 2 different Yahoo email accounts I have. It has happened on both. So is this a bug or what? I have tried email CS, to no avail. I am paying 25 a month & I want o open my email. Would someone please tell me it is not just my computer?

  18. Betty Saxon says:

My problem was signing on, I had been gone seven days out of the country and did not take my lap top. I had heard of a friend in Missouri having trouble with Yahoo too but didn’t expect to have the same. Anyway, after many times trying to sign-in, I finally started searching a way out of the problem through Yahoo. I finally was able to find a “Cus Service” request where you could type out the problem. At the completion, it said that the problem would be solved within 24 hours and, it was. I really like Yahoo’s Web Page and did not want to go to another site. Betty Saxon, Tx

  19. Athena says:

    1. Although I can retrieve from external accounts, mail from those accounts is not being sorted into the folders specified in the account setup. Why not?

    2. Why doesn’t the “all new mail” honor the color coding I set up for my filters?

    3. If you roll back SSL, how can we consolidate mail from multiple Yahoo! accounts?

And while we are on the subject of retrieving from external accounts…when is the Yahoo! client going to start using the UID and stop duplicating messages? The option to avoid “old” messages isn’t sufficient because it actually means “read”. We need to pull all messages once and only once.

  20. Hassan Ansari says:

i have facing chatting problemo, and the problem is that my chatting status showing offline in my account ….plz resolve it and i will thankful to u…….

  21. DAVE says:

What’s up with this? It’s days later, and still I’m getting Error Code 16 (and a link to a mail-in form about Error Code 14) when I want to use POP to get my mail. The only time I didn’t get that message is when I used the wrong password by accident (so I got a message about that). This is a huge waste of time. I mean, seriously, this is verging on lawsuit country.

  22. Hilary says:

I am still unable to check my external mail and it is going on three weeks now. Any idea when the rollback will be complete? Asking customer support has proven to be NO help as they are not even aware the problem exists, and I have had to refer them to this blog.

    Please advise.

  24. Michelle says:

My problem is that if I try and forward my mail to multiple contacts directly from Yahoo using my address book it will not let me. It keeps saying there is a problem with the addresses and to check again. When I double check it is formatted correctly, but Yahoo will still not let me forward.

  25. Lee says:

I don’t know whether this problem is related.
When I use the ‘search” function, I get a list of results, but when I click on any of the e-mails in the list, they will not open. Instead, I get a Yahoo error message. This has been going on for at least a week. I have sent e-mails and have used live chat to tell Yahoo of the problem and a few days ago they said that engineers are working to solve the problem — but it still doesn’t work. It’s impossible to access any of the e-mail in my file.
The error message I get says that I should check the spelling, capitalization, URL, etc of my search term. This has nothing at all to do with opening an e-mail in the search results. I don’t know of anyone else with Yahoo mail who is having this problem! Does anyone know what is going on?

  26. Jacques says:

I am getting current emails from May 25th to the Present. It now updates any new mail. I have been down since May 22nd. This is the first time that i have been up and running. Good Work!!!!!

  27. TJ says:

Aside from the 500+ messages a day of spam that I get in my spam folder, I also get about 10 obvious (pron, sex, viagra) messages in my inbox every day. I also get a lot of messages that appear because other people seem to be using my e-mail address!
Why can’t I set Yahoo Mail to only accept messages from people in my address book?
    Yahoo mail is becoming unusable.

  28. disturbeD says:

The initial message about being “busy” is no longer there… now I get the following:

“error occurred when fetching your external mail: lastUnsupported”.

This is week 3 and still not able to retrieve external mail.

  29. Jarilyn says:

So from what I understand there is a bottleneck at Yahoo and Emails are just sitting who knows where? Many of the yahoo groups I belong too posts are not coming through – Email has slowed to a trickle and of course the usual spam one gets tons of is not showing up either? I know Zone Alarm is not a problem with getting Emails as I have had it for years. When do they think the bugs will be all worked up and we are up and running normally again??

  30. RAM says:

With all the quality processes in place and having best brains in the world, still letting the bugs to slip in to production, not able to resolve the issue within a week, and not taking a decision on roll-back for a week, not able to resolve the issue after a week is definitely not expected from Worlds leading website Yahoo.

    It is really unfortunate

  31. Tom says:

I don’t know how long it takes to do a rollback but when I check my external mail, I still get told that I have one or more messages but they don’t show up until several minutes later, and sometimes they don’t show up at all. And, if you have the setting checked to delete the email from the external server, you’re basically out of luck whenever the emails go missing. I have been a Mail Plus customer for a long time and am very disappointed in Yahoo’s inability to solve this problem. I’m so disappointed in fact that I’ve switched all of my mail over to Gmail (which I don’t like as much as Yahoo) and as soon as I get used to that, I’ll be canceling my Mail Plus account and saying goodbye to Yahoo once and for all. No wonder Icahn wants to replace Yahoo’s CEO. He probably can’t get HIS external email either.

  32. Eric says:

    @Miguel:

Yahoo won’t say when or if it will get IMAP. Ryan has said that he’s told the people “upstairs” that we want it. So far, nothing’s happened. It’s not clear to me whether they don’t think it’s feasible technically, or economically.

I know I’ve been asking and waiting for for IMAP for some time now along with other people on this blog.

It would be a great feature to have… hope we don’t have to wait much longer.

  33. vanny says:

    thank you very much YAHOO……
with YAHOO i can chaating to other people in this world

    THANK’s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Lia says:

As of today, June 12th…still having problems downloading pop emails. Will this ever be fixed! I depend on yahoo for personal and business messages. AND I’VE JUST ABOUT HAD IT! Yes, I too messaged the help center and got “we can’t recreate the problem…”canned messages. THIS JUST SUCKS! Been a happy customer since 1998 or earlier…what gives!

  35. Miguel says:

I wonder if yahoo mail plus will ever get imap. Can you please comment on that?

  36. Saul says:

I hope the following will be resolved with the restoration. When I try to download I am told that Yahoo has downloaded say 4 messages. But then nothing appears in the Inbox until many minutes later and often it is not the full number of messages indicated to be part of the download.

Will rolling back help me with my problem… I have t-mobile and it goes to this blue page that just says yahoo mail… if it would help I would be happy…

Am finally able to move around in my yahoo email without being required to input my password everytime I want to delete an email, however am now a week unable to access my Yahoo Small Business Domain email..all other users unaffected…but as the Admin of the site, I cannot log in..access email..nothing..this is over a week now for a service that I am paying for…and no access…and no help…and no resolution. The only answers I’ve gotten have been canned responses (I used to work for a tech company and recognize it when I see it) and my calls to tech support have yielded..”change to a different browser like Firefox” (even though I have duplicated the password loop on 3 different machines..killed history..cookies..reboot until I’m blue in the face)….and being forwarded to Tech support after talking to 3 different Customer Service reps only to land in a phone queue that left me on hold for 20 minutes prior to telling me that the wait time was another 30 minutes. ( I personally did not seek upgrades to the Yahoo system that I have been using and that has worked fine for over 5 years…(if it aint broke dont fix it!)..and am not very confident at this point that anyone besides people posting here really even care.
    Help please? Someone? Anyone?

I am SO glad to know that OTHER people are having the same problem – RYAN – please do something about those help dept people, they should have escalated this LONG ago instead of saying *I* have a firewall …… There IS a bug!!! Tell them to admit it!!!!
    TIA

My ability to connect to incoming.lafayette.edu is still VERY sporadic. It usually takes about 4 or 5 tries before it works. But sometimes it takes more and I simply have to stop trying because it’s a big waste of time. Please get it back to the old set-up ASAP. This is NOT A GOOD SITUATION, to put it mildly…

  46. mia says:

I have been trying to get on to check my e-mail account and to no avail – the system just keeps spinning…I have rebooted the system soo many times it’s pathetic…I don’t want to use another server ’cause this is my main contact with the “outside” world…helpless in PA…

  47. ML says:

Any update to the HTML spacing issues?

  48. Jacques says:

This is the best Update yet! Thanks for the good news. I know no one wants to go backwards, but this is the only choice to rectify the problems. My congrats for realizing what must be done. We know you will be able to add the SSL fucntion in the future.

  49. gabor says:

Happy to hear that you are pushing for new functionality (e.g. SSL and hopefully a more compliant POP3 reader) … But, right now I’d be happier to hear that you will also enhance your processes for feature roll-outs and roll-backs. :-/

  50. Mike says:

Thank you for rolling back! It’s been a pain in the arse having to receive with Outlook during this downtime.
