Taglines eliminated: newshound shortage could be next!

You’ve almost certainly seen them before, but as of a few days ago you won’t be seeing them again. Tagline advertisements (which were inserted at the end of email messages) were comprised of short messages for a variety of products, but are now comprised of nothing!

I for one am going to particularly miss the frequent Yahoo! Mobile ad (which replicated on each reply in a thread) encouraging folks to “be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all” with Yahoo! Mobile, but I suppose I’ll learn to cope.

If you find yourself experiencing similar feelings of longing for these blurbs, don’t fret! You can put them in yourself by creating a custom signature! Just follow the directions from Yahoo! Help. In fact, I’m thinking of putting the ‘newshound’ message in my signature, but instead linking to this blog.

Is this for real? No tagline advertisement at the end of email messages?

The only reason I still pay for Yahoo Plus is so my outgoing mail doesn’t have taglines. I don’t need POP access anymore and there is no longer a storage limit so…

If true then bravo Yahoo!

“About time…” The only reason I switched from Yahoo! mail was the unprofessionalism of having ads in every message.
This is a very big step in the right direction. Bravo!

Well, I think they do not bring much benefit (few people even look at those tag lines because they are mostly focused on email content itself).

Perhaps making email service less annoying help yahoo maintain its email user base in current competing market.

My Yahoo home page is not updating the sports scores. Maybe with the focus off taglines, effort can go to keeping up with other issues. I forced to go to the “New Yahoo”, I will probably just switch to G-Mail

To Ramasvami (comment #33126), I have had no problems for years (that I can remember) by using Firefox for the old and new Yahoo Mail. I have a Plus account but I doubt that matters. My Firefox is 2.0.0.14 running on Win XP.

Ryan,
We still need a better way to group replies with a particular comment.

Just don’t start giving the disposable mail address away for free or I might have to start saving the 19.99USD a year that I pay for Y!M+!

Oh and my Firefox works just fine with “new” Y! Mail.

Just don’t put an HTML-coded link a site a blogspot.com in your signature, or any replies to your message will have their headers stripped off by the root mail server and they’ll get dumped into your spam email with no subject line, and a sender of “root@mta123.biz.mud.yahoo.com

Took Yahoo’s help about a month to fix the problem for me. Actually, it took 6-8 different people at the help desk you email about a month to be completely useless, and one 20-minute phone call to a guy named “Roy” or “Rory” who fixed it while I was on the phone with him.

While not having taglines is nice, it’s not a fix that was inherently necessary to the usability of Yahoo Mail. Instead, having features like IMAP are much more useful to the userbase at large.

I agree Kevin (#33386). I don’t currently pay for Plus, simply because POP access isn’t a compelling reason to have it. And now with Tags gone for the basic service, there’s not much of a feature gap anymore between the levels of service.

Now IMAP is something I will pay for from Yahoo, (even though Gmail offers it for free, albeit with other caveats: no unlimited storage, etc., contextual ads). I happen to think Yahoo’s web interface is the best.

I’m just not sure why we have to push Yahoo so hard to offer IMAP. I’m honestly perplexed.
