All-new Yahoo! Mail Photo Viewer

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I don’t know about you, but I have this funny feeling that this summer is shaping up to be a repeat of last summer (not in a good way). Well, at least here in London, things have been grey as all get out. So to brighten your day, I thought I’d share with you, a new feature that’s recently launched in the all-new version of Yahoo Mail.

If you use the all-new version of Yahoo! Mail, and if you email a lot of photos, you probably have already seen this feature, but just in case you haven’t come across it, there is a new feature that was added that allows you to view the photos that are attached to your yahoo mail directly from your Inbox.

Here’s how it works (easy as 1-2-3):
For this example, I’m working with an email that includes three photos, but the same applies whether there are 2 or 200 photos attached. When I open up the message that has photos attached to it, the bottom of the message is going to look like this (without those crazy red boxes and numbers):

Photo Viewer Step 1
  1. If you click ‘1’ you will be able to view the image directly from within the all-new Yahoo! Mail interface.
  2. If you click ‘2’ you’ll start a slideshow that will allow you to scroll through all the images attached, which is very similar behavior to number ‘1’. (For more detail on ‘1’ and ‘2’, have a look further down this post to the next image where I’ll talk about the image viewer.)
  3. But, after all the oohs and ahhs have worn off, this is what I REALLY like about this new feature… If you liked the download all feature, you’re really going to love this. ‘3’ allows you select from the attached pictures and only download the ones that you choose. All you have to do is put a check in the box of the pictures you want to download and then click the “download selected”. Of course you can still download all, but let’s face it I’m not that good of a photographer.

So what’s this image viewer all about?
If you’re still reading, let’s take a look at what happens when you click ‘1’ or ‘2’ from above. A sort of window pops up (it’s really an overlay) with the image you just clicked:

Photo Viewer Step 2

So here’s what you can do with the photo-viewer when it pops up (staying with the easy as 1-2-3 theme):

  1. Whether you click on a picture or the slideshow link, you can scroll through the pictures that are attached to the image. So what’s the difference? Well if you click the slideshow link, then it starts with the first image, and if you click a specific image, you’ll then go to the next image.
  2. Clicking ‘2’ will stop and start the slide show. If the slideshow is playing the text in the red box above will say “pause” instead of “play”.
  3. Clicking ‘3’ does exactly what it says on the tin. To close your photo-preview or slideshow, just click the “close” button.

So that’s it. The beauty is in the simplicity, and I still think the ability to download selected photos is fantastic!! Unfortunately, this feature is only available to users of the all-new mail, so if you’re a classic mail user, feel free to switch.

Happy Photo Viewing!

Think Big. Think Purple!!!

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

In case you haven’t heard (or seen)…Yahoo! is hiring. I recently added a blog page dedicated for job listings within the Mail team (linked to from the sidebar), and sometimes you might even catch one of the banner ads on the sign-in page.

Over to the right you can see my favorite example, featuring a guy who looks awfully similar to a guy I know from the Messenger team. Before you ask…yes people really do smile at work, and some people do work with their feet up. As long as you get your work done you are welcome to smile as wide and as frequently as you like.

We’re hiring BIG! Come create next-generation Internet experiences for over 250 million Yahoo! Mail users. We work on a huge scale and everything we do includes a good dose of innovation and fun. So whether you want to work on the Mail team, or just want be as happy as the guy in the picture, you should check out the job listings here or visit careers.yahoo.com for more.

Jessie Baylin serenades Yahoo!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

This doesn’t exactly relate directly to Yahoo! Mail, but it does relate to the people here that bring you Yahoo! Mail. Some might insist that this doesn’t belong here, but I’m the judge and my ruling is…I’ll allow it!

Thanks to our friends over at Yahoo! Music, singer/songwriter Jessie Baylin stopped by and performed some songs for everyone lunching outside of URL’s (our campus cafeteria). Despite an overcast morning, the sun politely decided to cooperate by showing up in time for the show. We also enjoyed some delightfully refreshing frozen lemonade before we all scurried back to our respective hamster wheels.

A day in the life of Liam

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

You may have first noticed the charming, yet goofy, ambassador for Yahoo! Mail almost two years ago, bouncing and pogo-ing around the beta version of what is now the All-New Yahoo! Mail (and of course pictured here on this blog as the caped crusader). Today I wanted to take the opportunity to not only get the skinny on our bespectacled friend, but share that skinny with those folks who don’t have the same insider access that I do.

It all began back in 1973. Born to a rocket-scientist mother and mailman father, Liam began perfecting the Chaplin-esque pratfalls we’ve come to love while establishing himself as the class clown of his elementary school. During his teen years he tried his hand at commercials, as well as music, but ultimately found his place working with his father at the post office.

It wasn’t long though before he had an epiphany. Liam wanted to be a part of the latest evolution of mail…email. As luck would have it, his mom had friends at RocketMail (the email engine that would become the foundation for Yahoo! Mail), and got him a job in the Yahoo! email room. As the product of a rocket-scientist and a mailman, Liam was perfectly suited to advancing communication technology, and emerged as the perfect advocate for Yahoo! Mail.

Though he has found great success in his role with the Yahoo! Mail team, all is not bliss for Liam outside of work…which is where you come in. Now you have the opportunity to help Liam find similar happiness outside of his job. Make Liam happy!

Happy emailing,
Andrew

Goose, it’s time to BUZZ the YMail blog!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

In the interest of blatant self-promotion, and because I’m still all a glow from the fact that my post was picked up by the Washington Post this week (I was, after all, a print journalism major for like 2 semesters), I thought now would be the perfect time to incorporate Yahoo! Buzz into this blog.

What is Yahoo! Buzz, you ask…well, as Tapan mentioned on Yodel a little while back:

Yahoo! Buzz uncovers the most interesting and relevant content from websites across the Internet to bring more buzz-worthy stories to the homepage of Yahoo!.”

Yahoo! front page Buzz integration

As of today you should be able to find a Buzz Up button at the end of all new posts to this blog. If you click on that button you will be voting to Buzz it up on the Yahoo! Buzz site.

By doing so you make it more likely that other people will find this content too (which I’m all for). If something gets enough votes it may even find itself on the Yahoo! homepage.

All-New Image Viewer for All-New Yahoo! Mail

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

If you are an active emailer of images, you’ve probably already noticed this recent enhancement. But just in case you hadn’t (and because I was excited to test out a different screencasting tool) I wanted to give you all a demonstration of the all new image viewer we’ve incorporated into the All-New Yahoo! Mail.

Never before has it been so easy to get a quick look at images in your inbox! Hope you enjoy the video, and please feel free to make any suggestions for other features you would like demonstrated or explained.

Taglines eliminated: newshound shortage could be next!

Friday, May 16th, 2008

You’ve almost certainly seen them before, but as of a few days ago you won’t be seeing them again. Tagline advertisements (which were inserted at the end of email messages) were comprised of short messages for a variety of products, but are now comprised of nothing!

I for one am going to particularly miss the frequent Yahoo! Mobile ad (which replicated on each reply in a thread) encouraging folks to “be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all” with Yahoo! Mobile, but I suppose I’ll learn to cope.

If you find yourself experiencing similar feelings of longing for these blurbs, don’t fret! You can put them in yourself by creating a custom signature! Just follow the directions from Yahoo! Help. In fact, I’m thinking of putting the ‘newshound’ message in my signature, but instead linking to this blog.

Yahoo! Mail users eligible for Pearl-a-day giveaway

Blackberry Pearl promo

If you’ve thought about jumping onto the mobile mail bandwagon for a while, now might be a good time to take the plunge. While the Yahoo! Mobile team has done a lot to make Mail (and other Y! products) work really well on a variety of mobile phones, the experience they’ve developed for certain smartphones (like BlackBerry or iPhone) is really awesome. For me, the divide between having to actively check my email and having my device notify me when new messages arrive is Grand Canyon-esque.

That’s why I think this promotion from the Yahoo! Mobile team is something really worth checking out. They are giving out a BlackBerry Pearl a day for the rest of May. All you have to do is sign-up for the promotion and then try using Yahoo! Mail on any data enabled phone. Once you’ve done so you’ll get entered into daily drawings when you use Yahoo! Mail. Winners get to choose the color and carrier for their new Pearl.

Check out the Yahoo! Mobile Sweepstakes page for all the details on entries, drawings, and timing. Also note that the checkbox for receiving future promos from BlackBerry defaults unchecked, so only check that if you WANT to be alerted about upcoming offers from BlackBerry.

Another scam warning – recent PayPal phishing

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I received a lot of positive responses (comments and email) after last week’s warning about bogus Yahoo! Lottery scams, so I thought I’d keep with that theme and offer up some more tips.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/paypal-scam.pngHopefully just about everyone knows that when someone sends an “URGENT” message “from the desk of…” some guy insisting that you just lucked into a fortune, your “too good to be true” alarms should sound off.

But a well crafted phishing email can be a little harder to spot without looking for key indicators. A quick glance at my spam folder revealed two different scammers posing as PayPal, notifying me of an urgent need to click a link and verify information.

If you look at the screenshot on the right you will see that the scammer is using the updated PayPal logo, but don’t let that give you a false sense of security. The greeting gives it all away. PayPal will ALWAYS address you formally by the name registered to your account. So if you have a personal account it will be your name, and if you have a business account it will reference your business name. Never as “Dear PayPal Member” or “Account Holder”.

Now that doesn’t mean that a message addressing you correctly is guaranteed to be legit, but it does mean that a message not addressing you directly is an obvious ruse.

Once you get past the greeting, you can also look for mistakes in the copy. In the above example there is an extra period at the end of a paragraph. In the other sample there is a missing return space between paragraphs. These are small things, but a lot of scammers seem to miss them.

Also, both examples urge you to click a link to go somewhere and input information … which most reputable sites won’t ask you to do.

Remember that these aren’t tips to confirm that a message is authentic, but rather clues to easily filter out a lot of the bad ones that aren’t authentic. Ultimately your best bet is open a new window and visit the site how you normally would, and look for any alert messages there. If you have a problem with your account they will usually notify there too.

Hope this helps a little more!

Improving a Classic

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Not too long ago, we celebrated the birthday of Yahoo! Mail. I still can’t believe that it’s already been 10 years. And as you read through that previous post, you’ll notice as time has passed, we’ve been improving and updating the Classic version of Yahoo! Mail in order to give you the best experience and most popular Web-mail in the world.

More changes on the way…
With the recent focus on all of the great features of the all-new Yahoo! Mail, quite a number of you have been asking “what’s the future of Yahoo! Mail Classic?”, and asking whether or not you’ll be forced to switch to the new version. Let me first say that we have no intention of retiring Yahoo! Mail Classic, and you will always have the choice of which version you want to use.

That being said, the Classic team has been working tirelessly to tune the technology behind Yahoo! Mail Classic as well as working on new features that will go a long way to – if I can use the term – ‘improve on a Classic’.

So what’s changing?
There’s a lot happening with Yahoo! Mail Classic. Some new features are being added, some changed and some removed. Over the years, we’ve been listening to your comments and what to you’ve been requesting as well as taking a look at some of the stuff you just don’t ever use. So I wanted to list here just some of the highlights that you’ll be seeing over the coming weeks:

Auto-save to Draft – Yahoo! Mail Classic now automatically saves a copy of the message you’re working on in your Drafts folder in case you lose your internet connection or your computer malfunctions.
Updated Classic Mail- Simpler uploading and downloading attachments – In most cases, downloading now requires just one click!
- One-Click Flagging – The new Flag column (just one column to the right of the check-boxes) makes it super easy to flag messages.
- Folder Renaming – Rename and delete your personal folders directly within the folder view.
- More Intuitive Names – References to “Address Book” have been changed to “Contacts”, and your “Bulk” folder will instead be called “Spam” (since that’s what it is).

There’s even more than what I’ve listed here. For the full list of changes, check out the “What’s different…” page within the help pages of the new Classic version.

When will these changes happen?
To be honest, some of you may already be seeing these new Classic Mail features. But most of you will see these changes arrive in Classic over the next few weeks. You can tell if you’ve got the updates by looking at the image above. If you see the features outlined in red, then you have the updates.

As always, happy emailing!!
Andrew – Yahoo! Mail Team
