That’s right, Yahoo! Mail has claimed April and we have christened it Yahoo! Mail Security Month. Hence the shield-totin’ Liam you see to the right. —>
You may have already noticed that the Mail tips on your main page (Mail tab in Classic, Home tab in All-New Mail) had taken a turn for the security oriented, and now you know that you aren’t seeing things. Well even if some of us are seeing things, at least we know that we aren’t seeing things within Yahoo! Mail.
A variety of tips are there to help you find a ton of useful information over on the Yahoo! Mail Security site. Whether it’s understanding the best ways to prevent spam, how to protect yourself from viruses, or how to make sure you don’t fall for a phishing scam, The Yahoo! Mail team wants you to be smarter online!

Also, when you aren’t reading this blog you may want to keep your eyes and ears open for other security tidbits from Yahoo! Mail.

The new Yahoo! Mail is great! On the calendar ticker when you hover your cursor over an event and a window with event details pops up, it used to show you a map of the location of the event. What happened to this feature? If users didn’t like it you could atleast make it an option in the event pop-up window. Can’t wait for the full Yahoo! Calendar integration and update.

Will this discussion include putting yahoo mail under SSL, and providing support for SSL mail servers to get my Gmail into my Yahoo mailbox?

Can we please get an update on the status of the new yahoo mail classic that was supposed to be released months ago. I know you post news mainly about the new version of mail, but us classic users are still here and would love to know where the update is.

Ryan,
What are your plans for implementing IMAP a la GMail?
April 10th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
If April is Yahoo’s Mail Security Month why am I still being Spammed? I recieve a ton of Spam. This needs to be stopped.
I am tired of having to Constantly Block Spam.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
I second EM’s inquiry. What are your plans for IMAP?
April 10th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Hi Ryan,
Okay, you talked about security - I am seconding (at least part of) Todd’s query. I am getting nastygrams from my ISP because I’m using MailPlus to retrieve my ISP email without using an SSL connection. Do you have any plans for allowing SSL-based retrieval of POP mail?
Thanks!!

There is a comment requesting IMAP in response to just about every blog post, yet there’s never an announce even about it potentially being supported. Why are these comments constantly ignored?
April 10th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Hogan,

In fact I have commented many times. The fact is that all I’m able to confirm is that I’m voicing your requests to the appropriate teams within these walls, and that it is being evaluated. As soon as I have something firm to share you can be confident I will be sharing it.

Thanks for reading!

Re: IMAP watch
That is, at least, encouraging. My Yahoo! is nearing 10 years old, and I’ve warded off the temptation to switch away. But lack of IMAP even for Pro has started to get rather annoying.
As far as security goes, I’m happy to say SpamGuard is very successful on my account, and all other security features have never led me astray!
April 11th, 2008 at 3:32 am
Another feature you might want to try is showing when a person has read what you sent them, date and time would be nice….Can’t be that hard….one of your competitors does it..
April 11th, 2008 at 4:54 am
The usual flim flam and folderol then…..
April 11th, 2008 at 5:07 am
Thanks for your response re IMAP, Ryan….
However, your news isn’t very encouraging.
April 11th, 2008 at 5:17 am
I think you have to improve your anti-spam tools. Yahoo is the only address where I still routinely get the Internet Pharmacy and Nigerian multi-million dollar offers. The other providers have systems that seem to block this trivial form of spam.
Perhaps Yahoo can put a system in place that will also block junk mail or at least divert it to a junk mail folder.

Ryan,
Thank you for speaking with the appropriate people regarding IMAP.
Did it seem that they were rebuffing you or were they receptive to your comments regarding IMAP on our behalf?
April 11th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Hello IMAP fans,
-
I hope you understand that I’m in a bit of a bind when it comes to certain queries about possible features. Regardless of whether something is being considered, is in the process of being built, or is about to roll-out to users, I can’t really talk about it until the company decides it is the time to share (we are a public company after all).
-
As far as “rebuffing” or “receptive” goes, it’s kind of a confusing way of describing it. I hope that everyone who cares enough about Yahoo! Mail to read this blog understands that the people working here really do care about it too … and care about what you all think of it. They want to do things that you will like, so I would argue that they are always receptive to the feedback I share with them.
-
That being the case, I still can’t provide any detail as to the possible implementation of IMAP, but I assure you that your collective voice is being heard.

Ryan,
Thank you for your assurances that you’re conveying our feedback regarding IMAP to the appropriate people.
I can only speak for myself, but I would rather have it sooner for what you charge for MailPlus (POP –> $20/year), then have it later and have it be free. Not sure how anyone else feels about that, but that’s my own take.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
I agree with Eric. I’m happy to pay for IMAP. Right now Yahoo mail is going to Gmail so I can get IMAP but I hate the way the Gmail labels work - I want traditional folders. I’d like to see three things to kiss Gmail goodbye: 1) the ability to set filters to mark messages meeting a certain criteria as read (ie in the spam folder), 2) support for retrieving email via secure POP so I can import all the email currently on Gmail, and 3) IMAP.
April 12th, 2008 at 5:48 am
Hi Ryan,
A couple of things….I access Yahoo! Mail through yahoo.com.au and I don’t get some of the features shown on your blog such as the new security messages featuring Liam on the Mail main page, and the “Blog” menu item under Help.
This is very frustrating to me as I’m a Mail Plus member and seem to be missing out on features which others seem to be able to access.
I also echo the calls for IMAP. At present the only feature I require in order to use Yahoo! Mail as my central e-mail client is the ability to create sub-folders. IMAP would be the icing on the cake!

SSL already exists for yahoo, at last for me wih the Plus account. The settings are:
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL, port: 995
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication
Account Name/Username: xxxxxxxxx
Email address: xxxxxxxx@yahoo.com
Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password
April 12th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Constantine - that’s not what I meant. If you use Yahoo to retrieve mail from other accounts it does not support SSL or any port changes. You can get Yahoo mail using SSL exactly as you have described.

Hi Ryan,
I’m having a problem with yahoo mail and I don’t know where to turn. I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this, but I couldn’t find another place that seemed better.
I have the classic old yahoo mail which I’ve been using for over a decade.
Many years ago, I also had an email account with my internet service provider netdoor.com and used to have this account automatically sync up with my yahoo account so that I could read all me mail in one place.
Well, that was many years ago (like 1997 or so I think).
I cancelled my account with netdoor a long time ago and have actually moved several times and had other ISP’s etc.
Here’s the problem. For the last couple of months, every now and then when somebody tries to send me an email at my yahoo mail account, they get a failed delivery notice and it indicates that there was an attempt to send the email to my old email address with netdoor. I too end up getting a failed deliver notice for their email in my yahoo inbox.
I have looked at all my mail options, etc and can’t seem to figure out why this is happening. I don’t have any sort of forwarding enabled or anything.
It’s like there is some sort of ghost from the 90’s lurking around in the Yahoo mail serviers or something.
Can you help or direct me to someone who can? I’m at my wits end.
Thanks a bunch, and also thanks for many years of otherwise great email service at an unbeatable price (free!)
Sam

Why am I still receiving spam that has an e-mail address similar to mine, and still goes by Spam Guard?
April 13th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Can’t find where I asked this question so will try here. For the past two days or so, FireFox has logged me out of Yahoo only minutes after logging on. The ‘Keep me logged in for two weeks’ option is checked. I get a popup box that says I am logged on in another page. . .I am not. This doesn’t happen in IE, but not thrilled with using IE. Can you tell me if there is some problem with FireFox or some setting that needs to change? I’ve used FireFox with Yahoo for months and have not had this problem until recently. Thanks for your ongoing efforts to improve Yahoo and thanks for any help you can offer.

I recently switched to the new Yahoo! Mail and I was pleasantly surprised to see the integrated feed reader.
I have kept only my Groups mails here because of the amount of spam that I get in my inbox ~ 5/day. Hopefully, this drive will increase awareness and reduce spam.

I really like the new Yahoo classic mail, where by whenever i open my mail i can immediately see friends that are on line,so is a great improvement.
April 17th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Hey Ryan, how do you get that local tab that you have in the home tab? I only have the other 4.
April 18th, 2008 at 8:30 am
For some reson I can not open attachments as I used to on classic view. It prompts for pop-up download each time. Annoying. The font is different, encoding of my choice is not recommended (I need this!), General preferences are twice shorter than of the old classic’s.
And no, it is not my computer/browser setting, because another Yahoo account still looks the same and works the same as it has been for years.
What’s wrong? Can I go back to old classic?
April 18th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
For some time I have not been able to view pictures in my email. Please help!!! This is so frustrating. Maybe I should go back to AOL. Is there someone out there to help me?
April 24th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Hi,
I got a mail from “YAHOOMAIL CENTER ” with the subject line “Yahoo Warning!!! (Verify Your Account Now To Avoid Suspension)”
asking me to provide some details to confirm my account with yahoo. Is it a genuine mail sent by yahoo? Or is it a spam mail?
Thanks,
Vish

It’s ironic this is mail security month, as there seems to be a BIG uptick in the SPAM getting through your filters. What’s going on? Your SPAM control tools used to be great, but it now seems as if everything is getting through. I don’t want to have to leave Yahoo Small Business Hosting and mail, but will if I continue getting a lot more SPAM than I used to with your service.
Thanks for listening!

Having Trouble signing in?
May 17th, 2008 at 11:22 am
I have two paying accounts with yahoo bizmail. We want IMAP!!!
May 17th, 2008 at 11:26 am
IMAP already works on mobile devices, why won’t Yahoo allow it to work from other clients i.e. outlook?
May 19th, 2008 at 3:01 am
Yes, there’s certainly a huge rise amount of spam coming through the filters. Security month?
July 18th, 2008 at 9:06 am
I know I’m a couple of months late about this, but maybe that’s a sign. I’m with all the folks who say they are still getting a lot of Spam. I’ve tried blocking addresses, pressing the SPAM button to get rid of the pesky stuff, contacting technical support…but not only am I still getting SPAM, I’m still getting the SAME SPAM THAT I ALREADY REPORTED MORE THAN ONCE. I can’t see at all how my SpamGuard is working.
Any help? Thanks.
