More ways to get to Yahoo! Mail

The response to the Desktop Shortcut tip from last week was so positive, I thought it would be a good idea to share the details on the toolbar tip I described as my personal favorite. Just like the desktop solution, this should work for users on windows or Mac, and on just about any browser option for either.
Just about everyone should be familiar with the idea of adding a page to a Favorites or Bookmarks list. Something that many people may not be aware of (except, of course, for Tint and Mark who also suggested this within Comments) is that you can have a customizable toolbar near the top of your browser with quick access to your favorite sites.
Depending on your browser you may have to enable (or reveal) the Toolbar option. To do this you’ll need to access the View menu for your browser and navigate into the Toolbars area (it’s usually at the top). Then mouse over and make sure that the Links or Bookmarks option is enabled (or checked). After doing this you should see a new toolbar in your browser. Each browser usually comes with a few pre-selected sites, but those can be easily deleted.

Now that you have your toolbar available, you can start populating it with buttons to your favorite Yahoo! sites. You can add other sites as well, but really … why would you need to? ![]()

Just like when you added the shortcut to your desktop, you will want to mouse up the the Y! icon in your browser’s address bar. Simply click and drag it to the toolbar and that’s it.
Depending on which browser you are using, you may want to rename the link to something shorter, or more recognizable (I usually make mine “Y!Mail” to maximize space) … but that is entirely up to you.

Meh, toolbars just waste precious screen real estate.

When I read “More ways to get to Yahoo! Mail” I was hoping to see an announcement for free POP3 (or IMAP!) access. I must be dreaming. Anyway, back to where you were.

Thanks for the tip

I have a toolbar carousel in my browser and put a Y!Mail inbox icon there last week after trying several different shortcuts. It’s great to get to my inbox with one click.
Last week’s desktop shortcut is great if you just want to check your mail without having to open your browser and then navigate to Yahoo Mail. The toolbar shortcut is great if you’re already browsing and want a quick peek at your inbox.
When is Yahoo going to offer a brain chip so we can just think about Yahoo Mail and see our inbox? Just kidding.

I use folders in my Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox and have seven or eight of them, and when I want to add a bookmark, I can drag and drop tp precisely the spot I want in the folder I want. This is very efficient use of screen real estate.
One item that I want one-click away is Yahoo mail.

Most don’t realize just how powerful that live bookmark toolbar is in FireFox for example.
In my personal case I have about 300 bookmarks on it and over 150 RSS feeds.
You are not limited to dropping and dragging a few limited icons there the way most people tend to use it.
Mine is a full tree structured setup that is best managed via the Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks item.
Simply set up the major divisions as folders on the live toolbar and then create subfolders off that and then copy or drop and drag bookmarks to populate the tree.
Also with the open in tabs options you can easily manage tab groups or if you lose your place and need to get back to an original tab in the set, just select the proper tab position and click on that one bookmark of the tab set to restore your initial grouping without messing with the current status of the companion tabs by doing a total reset.

I am a MailPlus user so besides my default inbox email address I have a bunch of disposable emails using the base naming conventions that Mail Plus offers.
Now when I create those other emails alias items I also create a new folder for those emails to be routed to.
Prior to a recent upgrade my yahoo mail status would reflect if there were unread items in those folders, but now even the myyahoo widgets only look at the main inbox, which for me will only have inbound undetected spam or new correspondent email landing there since 99% of my mail gets ported to the various folders per mail alias setup.

When I did the most recent upgrade to using the newest AJAX interface to my yahoo mail, I got bitten by the fact it automatically started up an IM setup right along with the upgrade.
I tend to not use IM programs unless absolutely necessary due to the number of people I interact with on a daily basis I could be totally consumed with IM overload.
That is the reason I run a third party program when I need it that can enable by group control who can see me or not rather than an all or none situation.
But in any event when I switched over all in my address book showed up in the chat client and I was marked online. I almost immediately switched to hidden status, but I had already gotten a few spam type inbound IM messages from those not in my address book. Either they somehow saw that short term session of me being in online status or they are using a program that runs through all the letter number combinations to see if they have a live one at the other end.
I suggest the default is to come up in the hidden mode to minimize this difficulty.
Right now every time I go to check my mail I have a raft of offline messages to my IM client that I have to delete out as cleanup.
Have to get around to white listing only those I want I guess.

A suggested feature for the mail address book and creation of mail plus alias emails.
Since I have multiple emails when I compose a new message it comes up to my default email address and I have to select which email to use for that mail.
I would like to have an option for when a user is added to my address book I can specify which alias email to assign them to for sending mail to them.
So if they are in the accounting department they get mail from me as basename-2accounting and not some other email alias by accident.
Also I would like to be able to assign an email alias to mail group distribution lists and have a way to specify a folder for responses from members of the list for that email alias to go to a specific folder other than the folder the individuals end up in.
I manage that now manually when creating the alias emails, but have to remember to send distribution list stuff over the group alias rather than an individual alias.

Why cannot we have a simple no graphics mail page where we can access emails more quickly?
I use my Blackberry internet access to check my BT yahoo emails but the new mail format is too large to load and the normal Yahoo homepage takes ages.
I am presently abroad using a dial up access on my PC and it takes far too long to load the Yahoo page.
A mobile/dial up friendly email access would be appreciated.

A free POP3 will do yahoo a lot of good so why not?
March 27th, 2008 at 11:19 am
POP3 is one of the features of a Mail Plus account.
I have a good deal since my ISP automatically includes Mail Plus as a perk for the highest speed tier users via a marketing agreement with Yahoo.

Is that true “We’re making some changes that will affect one of your Yahoo!
profiles. After April 9, 2008, mature content will not be
permitted within Yahoo! Profiles.
In accordance with this new policy, users will no longer be able to
designate an “adult profile,” and mature content will be removed.”
I just want to know or is it hack or spasm?? I know it is part of webmail profile too

When I start my browser I have the homepage set to start two pages in different tabs: one is my Yahoo home page, the other my Yahoo Mail.

Hi,
Thanks for that tip. Lately, I have noticed that whenever I click onto my yahoo account I can’t seem to navigate into my mailbox to reply, delete, etc. any further than the view screen. Other Yahoo mailbox options that I attempt to use also fail. What do I need to check to fix this problem. I know it must be my computer since I can easily access my yahoo account and its’ full range of options when I use another computer. I have another mailbox account with aol and don’t have this problem. Thanks

Lurker of Sorts,
-
The chat feature should remember the setting from your last session. If you “Sign out of chat” from the chat status drop-down and then sign out of Mail, the next time you sign in to Mail your “Offline” chat status should remain.
-
The same goes for ending a Mail session while connected. If you were connected to chat when you signed out of Mail it will automatically re-connect the next time you sign in to Mail (unless you are already logged into the Messenger client.
-
This seems to be a frequent question, so perhaps I smell a blog post!

Why can’t I move my mail preview over to the left side (2 columns) like it use to be, I am using the old page which I like better but when I try to switch mail to narrow column, it switches all the columns over? I have tried this several times and I only highlight mail.
Thank you for your help.

I could not find any specific post to comment about a potential issue with the way Yahoo! Email handles FORWARDING of email attachments.
Has anyone experienced that when forwarding attachments to other apps (like Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, SharePoint etc) the attachment file name is truncated - and with some apps the attachment is not even recognized.
However, when composing a NEW Yahoo! email and attaching files everything is cool.
Problem only seems to happen when FORWARDING attachments that are part of an existing email.
I have tested FORWARDING with Gmail and Hotmail - they do not seem to have this issue that Yahoo! email seems to have.
Trying to work with Yahoo help center via email is pointless (after about 10 emails going in circles I quit – they always seem to respond with the same form letter and not reading anything I have submitted) – and calling the center keeps you on hold for hours (after 3 hrs I gave up) - I am trying this blog to see if anyone knows anything about this and seeking advice or assistance.
If this is not the proper forum for this please point me to where I should go.
Anyone??

It would be nice if we could actually login to our Yahoo mail. The thing just times out, and Customer Care is not answering questions regarding the problem.

Could you help me?
Add me at my account to solve my problem, please?
