Almost forgot the best new feature in All-New Mail

The response was great from last week’s post about new features in All-New Mail, and it’s awesome to see how many of you are excited by the “Auto-Save” and “Download All” additions. As shocking as it might be, however, I managed to forget what might be the single greatest enhancement in the history of Yahoo! Mail.

bloglink.png***Drumroll please***

If you are using the All-New Mail you can now access the blog from a link within the Help dropdown! Of course if you are reading this you already know how to get to this blog, but now users will have another way to access the blog from right within Mail (along with the existing RSS Feed option).

Hopefully this will not only make it easier for some of you existing readers to find your way back to the blog, but should help expose it to even more people who didn’t even know it was here.

And while we’re on the topic of ways to access the blog, I thought I’d include some information for iPhone/iPod Touch users. If you add the YMail blog to the Home Screen you will see that we have provided a button icon to replace the screenshot you would otherwise get. I’m sure that sounds small, but I know that button icons are a big deal to a lot of iPhone enthusiasts. So add the blog to your Home Screen and visit from there as often as you like … with only one touch from your fingertip.

Speaking of iPhone, I’ve got something else you might like … but has nothing to do with Yahoo! It looks like the feature was included in the 1.1.1 release of the software, but you can now bring up the iPod controls, even when the phone is locked, by simply pressing the home button twice. I had already heard that doing this when unlocked brought up favorite phone contacts, but never heard about the iPod controls (a major pain point for me).

You should add the ability to upload a picture for your contact/address book!

  2. fbindc says:

We need more transparency from Yahoo on why so many yahoo email users have problems sending and receiving email on the iphone.

  3. Missy V says:

Blog link under the Help dropdown menu is not available in all Yahoo! Countries. If it serve as an alternative to RSS Feed, it will be great to include.

Don’t get link to Blog in my mail > help pulldown!

Also like others would the BCC turned on, and the ability to save mail text to txt file (as you could in classic).

Also would be nice to be able to insert graphics into mails – at moment I have to compose in a WP package and then cut and paste the lot in.

but like most of the new features – keep up the improvements.

    thanks

What I really want to know is why the new version of mail FORCIBLY opens a new browser on EVERY SINGLE LINK ON THE PAGE that isn’t Yahoo Mail. This is insulting and annoying. (I wish Firefox would allow you to override these kinds of things.) It’s sufficiently irritating that I haven’t bothered with the new mail interface since I first test drove it.

  6. nickymlg says:

Great add-on!!!. The feature I was always asking to have. Good work.

  7. WW says:

I use Mozilla as my preferred browser and it takes forever to load the new yahoo mail. Did I mention forever? Any suggestions?

As for the BCC function, it would be nice to at least have the option to keep it there as I use it for almost all my forwards and it is rare that I use the cc.

  8. Philip says:

I agree with Beach004 – “I also wish (not for the first time) that when mail is moved to a folder, one of the column headings could be “To:”. Most of my saved mail consists of messages I myself have sent–so I know who “Sent:” it–I want to know to whom it went, at a glance.”

It would be most helpful to have the option to display the “To:” field in the folders under “My Folders”.

  9. Henrik says:

Please, allow users to attach a document stored in Briefcase. Otherwise, YMail rocks. I’ve been using it for 10+ years.

  10. SPDT says:

Cool…but you have a lil’ typo in the last words after the last comma in this part…

…but you can now bring up the iPod controls, even when the phone is locked, but simply pressing the home button twice.

should read, I’m thinking “BY simply pressing the home button twice.” yeah?

  11. sabrina says:

i can’t use this new email option at all. It is driving me nuts! I can’t retrieve my mail, or send anything, not sure who can help fix this??? Very frustrated. I try to go back to Mail Classic and nothing happens… I don’t know what to do?

  12. Chris says:

I think it’s just a common courtesy to use Bcc. It’s annoying not only to receive mail w/ enormous headers but it’s also concerning to see my name and email addy being dispersed w/o my consent. I also think if people would use Bcc more, the amount of Spam would likely decrease because there is no telling where those addresses end up. Plus, I almost always use Bcc to myself for nearly everything I send to make sure it was sent out correctly and the people recieveing it, friend, family or work related, not knowing otherwise. Personally I think it gives the impression of personalization because you appear to take the time to write them specifically. If anything, hide Cc by default with hopes to maybe encourage more considerate emailing.

I’m still wondering why I get emails on a delayed basis, as in days and up to a week later. Can anyone help with that?

Sorry posted this on the wrong one…

I really like yahoo mail, and I’m a Plus user but, I’ve waited too long for IMAP support.

So I spent a day moving everything to Gmail and will soon cancel my plus membership before it renews which happens in the next 3 weeks.

I really wish I could stick with yahoo, but I really need this feature despite Yahoo’s superior web interface.

  16. ignacio says:

very good i already like it!!!

  17. cj says:

Love the new additions, but how about fixing the broken items, such as vanished capabilities on Classic (e.g. an ‘add sender to my address book’ icon) and search (which only searches the most recent 30 days of messages)?

  18. PatientAndUndersandButFrustrated says:

It’s great to see Yahoo! Mail unveiling new features, but is there an update coming in regards to the Postmaster situation?
    -
We’re going on 3 weeks now where we haven’t been able to get mail through to Yahoo!, and we still haven’t received a single response from the postmaster team that gives information on what the problem may be.
    -
It’s somewhat frustrating considering 1/3rd of our list is Yahoo!.

  19. RyanK says:

    Hi again,
    -
Thanks for all of the feedback. I’m already voicing the demand for IMAP, but I can voice a little louder :)
    -
For the BCC stuff … I do agree that we encourage people to use it, but I also maintain that for most users it doesn’t come up often in their typical activities. There are only so many pixels on a page, so we have to try and find the right balance of showing the stuff that is needed by the most people, without bogging them down with features and boxes that they never use. So it’s not that we are “hiding” it as if to suggest not to use it, but rather that it’s there easily if needed.

I have been using the new email for about 2 weeks. I like it.
I have not yet figured out why I have to sign in again after closing my browser. Setting is for two weeks without sign in. Which worked fine in the Classic version

  21. Dennis says:

I have never had problems with the new email. I try to help others on Yahoo Answers. Many people have major problems with the New Mail and are not even able to click on a link to return to Classic. What is a recommended URL to go to in order to return to Classic?

  22. Allan says:

IMAP for Yahoo! Mail Plus will be great… I totally agree with Steve…

  23. dreamland95 says:

How about fixing the unexpected problem pop up boxes I get EVERY time I try to go one of my folders with new mail in it. Even better, how about stopping the Error 5′s I get pretty much daily when it fails.

  24. beach004 says:

I use BCC on 90% of my emails; it would be convenient to have the option of displaying it all the time.
I also wish (not for the first time) that when mail is moved to a folder, one of the column headings could be “To:”. Most of my saved mail consists of messages I myself have sent–so I know who “Sent:” it–I want to know to whom it went, at a glance.
    Thanks,
    Beach004

  25. Royal-Girl says:

I think BCC can stay invisible, I am sure most of users don’t use it that often. But may be for them it could be possible to choose either they want to hide BCC or show it…

Off topic : Using Yahoo!Mail and considering it as THE BEST mail service (also radio, messenger, My Yahoo etc) I really don’t know what to do if Yahoo is bought by MS. I really hate MS and all their products and I am sure many users will switch from yahoo mail to something else. MS will destroy yahoo. I can’t believe the history of yahoo is gonna finish so badly. In case Yahoo becomes MS I will switch for email on my own server. Don’t want MS neither Google. Fed up with them.

  26. Steve says:

IMAP access please, at least for Plus subscribers. If Gmail can do it for free why can’t Yahoo do it for its paid subscribers? I have been a loyal plus member for years and love the service but am seriously considering a move to another provider if I can’t get IMAP.

  27. Prashant says:

I would also second IMAP & POP features for free like Gmail provides.

Upload multiple files would also be nice.

  28. June says:

    Hi Ryan,
It’s good to hear someone is still working on the new Yahoo email. However as an retired programmer I see more work to be done to customize email functions. For example many email users likes to save their emails to a text format in their hard drive. I believe the classic version has that function. Also some folks like to insert animated pictures and you can’t do it as I tried. How about adding more font like comic sans or scripts? These are simple cosmetic changes and can be done in between the important stuff. Also how can I prevent emails in my trash box from being removed in 1 day. We should be able to set the days in mail options. Thanks

  29. jam says:

I tried the new mail a couple of times, but I was not able to use the keyboard to move around.

In ff and seamonkey I can simply hit either TAB to move around or / to start a search and get to where I want (ctrl-G searches the for next instance), it is very easy.

I wish these were available in the new look.

  30. Craig Wormald says:

Hi Ryan, “they” say when you send out forwards to people, you should use the “BCC” option…. In your response you say, it makes sense to hide it, why???? What difference does it make, if it’s hidden or not, you can use either “CC” or “BCC”

  31. John Taylor says:

Please allow us to permanently remove the advertisement at first log on. It now re-apears when each mail subject is opened. VERY FRUSTRATING. So I have reverted to the old version.

  32. Andy says:

I am trying to transfer over from embarqmail.com with my email but it is not an option for me. Any ideas? They give me options to transfer over hotmail, gmail, aol, etc, but not embarqmail. HELP!!!

  33. Abc says:

Just switch to Gmail…I am sure this comment will be deleted! :)

    Hi Bri,
    -
I’m already on the case. No promises or ETA … but I’m working on it.

  35. bri says:

umh, is there an Upload All (or many) function???

  36. RyanK says:

    Hi Craig,
    -
Are you saying that you think the BCC should be permanently visible for everyone? Or that you would just like it to remember your preference from your last message or session?
    -
I’m sure you understand that for most people it makes sense to hide it except for the occasional time it’s needed, but I’m interested in hearing more about your usage type of usage.

    Ryan

  37. Craig Wormald says:

The “new mail” is good, however why don’t you find a way to keep the “BCC” open, instead of having us all click on the button whenever we want to forward something ??? It’s not really all that hard, but, it’s an extra step we shouldent have to do..

  38. Benzo says:

IMAP, please, that’s the feature we need. Please, please, I beg you! IMAP! I’ll pay more! I’ll but more Yahoo! stock. I’ll do whatever it takes!
