User Tip: Managing your blocked lists

It’s been just over a week, and the submission Form for User Tips is already working great. Several of you have already sent in your expert tips, and now I’m going through the initial submissions. I might be reaching out to some of you for clarification, so be on the lookout.
Our first User Tip comes to us courtesy of Mel, and is relevant to both Classic and New Mail users. Congrats to Mel, who should be on the lookout for an email addressing a reward!
After you’ve marked several hundred messages as spam and have a lengthy blocked address list that needs to be weeded out to make room for more blocked addresses, review the list and make note of the domains that recur frequently in your list.
Remove all of the blocked addresses that are included in those frequently occurring domains. Now that you’ve done that, add those domain names to your blocked address list and you won’t be getting anymore spam from those domains and you have lots more room for more blocked addresses.
Mel H.
So if you see 10 different addresses that share the same domain, you can just block the domain and free up 9 slots in your available blocked addresses. Thanks again to Mel for the tip.
I’m always looking for more, but don’t forget … this form is for USER TIPS only. Please no Customer Care requests and no product feedback. There’s plenty of room for suggestions in the Comments section
.

As a follow up, it would be nice if the blocked email addresses could be sorted by domain rather than by the email account name.

Thanks for the suggestion Stephen. I’ll pass that along.

Mel’s tip is a good one. I had never looked closely at that list before this, but discovered something interesting. The VAST majority of the spam addresses on my blocked list comes from the yahoo.com and hotmail.com domains. I don’t think it would be a good idea to block those domains. If I did, my list would shrink from over 350 addresses to fewer than 50.

I’ve used this domain-blocking trick for a long while, with great success.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to work by blocking an entire TLD, like .cn or .jp
Ryan, perhaps that ability could be added? And can it be addressed why there’s a limit on the number of blocked addresses/domains allowed?

I would like the ability to add addresses to a “white list” like I can do at work. I have a friend whose domain was blocked by Yahoo because of spam issues, and if I could add her specific e-mail address to a list to allow her messages through, that would be helpful. When I contact Yahoo customer service, I get messages back that aren’t very helpful, e.g., contact the postmaster at the other person’s domain or have my friend fill out an online form (which they tried to do). I’m the Yahoo customer, right?

A few suggestions in addition to the previous suggestion of being able to sort by domain.
a) Ability to use a wildcard in the block. For example I am blocking joopiter1.net, joopiter2.net and so on. I would like one block on joopiter*.net
b) Ability to delete several blocked addresses at one time.
c) Save the sorted listing and go back to the exact point after delete or another action.
Thanks….

Thanks for the tip, Now I need another tip. HOW DO I ACCESS THE LIST.
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:36 am
In Classic mail, marking something as spam does not put it into my blocked list. Is there a setting to make it do that, or does this work only on New Mail?
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:20 am
Thanks! I had somewhere around 120 email address from mail.ru !
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:23 am
Oh, and as Stephen pointed out putting them in order by domain would help and having it where you can select multiple at a time.
February 22nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
If the list of blocked addresses were TEXT, it could be manipulated [copied and pasted into a document (e.g., spreadsheet) where it could be sorted]. Then I would be able to determine which domains of the 390 blocked addresses occur several times and take action as suggested.
Tell Al the list is accessed through Mail > Options > Blocked Addresses.

Please stop so many advertisements from getting into my email. I am getting too many. I haven’t subscribed to anything but careerbuilder.
February 23rd, 2008 at 3:21 am
I agree with Donna. I used to never get ads in my email but now it is about 80% . What is frustrating , is that when I receive them I delete them by clicking on spam only to have them reoccur sometimes next day ! Have many spam artist also wanting info saying I have inherited money ( most from Nigeria ) get these several times a week. Always send to spam.
My biggest pet peeve : is with tool box ! NEVER actually knows how many or even if I reallly do have mail !!! 4 instance it may say I have 9 new emails when actually there are 2 !!!

The problem I just had was that email from my boss at our business domain did not hit my yahoo account for days and days … not fun when I get asked why I didn’t do something at work. This has not happened in over three years. He received a “Mailer-Daemon” message saying I reported him for spam!!!! NOT LIKELY! I sent a note to Postmaster at yahoo and have yet to receive a response — it’s over the “48 hours” promised by the auto-responder. p.s. I have Classic Mail and cannot update as I am on Windows98 at home. Help! Thanks!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:58 pm
So, if most of the domains are yahoo.com why doesn’t Yahoo do something about the spammers using their domain?
February 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm
“..I would like the ability to add addresses to a “white list” like I can do at work. I have a friend whose domain was blocked by Yahoo because of spam issues, and if I could add her specific e-mail address to a list to allow her messages through, that would be helpful…”
This is a good idea, I also propose for example, this “white list”, automatically include names in the contact list of a user.
Thank
DD
together with domain blocking can solve majority of domain

For M.A.–
Lately I have seen scams coming from Bonn, Germany, that said in the text that they were from Nigeria. GeoBytes is what I use to determine the location based on the ISP address. THEY could be wrong since I was receiving ads from Texas for several months and I am not in that state! My attempts to contact them went unanswered, so I don’t know how well they can be trusted.
To dd–
No LOGICAL reason exists for Yahoo to block e-mail from persons or companies in the contact list. What gets me, however, is the delay of several hours or days for mail to appear in my inbox. Maybe it was re-routed through the AT&T anti-terrorist computers, where the messages are copied and analyzed. Exactly why they would need to be analyzed is beyond me, though.
February 23rd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Is there any way to block any and all e-mails that do not come in ENGLISH? I especially dislike those e-mails that come in a format that does not even LOOK like letters of any kind.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
thank you for providing me with superior service at no cost. in yahoo i trust.

I have a BIG problem with spam comong from a yahoo domain. I send them to abuse@yahoo.com and i get a answer stating ” it didnt come from yahoo”.I’m afraid the masseage wasnt checked very good because it did !! I have even changed my addresse and i worked for about 3 days. then mail box filled with spam. I even get spam mailed to somebody else. I is not even my addresse.Funny thing is i never get spam in my gmail or aim mail accounts.wonder why??
March 3rd, 2008 at 9:09 am
Macdad, I saw your comment about the blocked list being in text…In Classic Mail, the list is in text and I’ve had success copying and pasting it to a document so that I can sort it. I haven’t tried it in the new mail format though. Maybe you can temporarily switch to Classic Mail to copy the blocked address list.
I also think having the ability to sort the blocked address list by domain is a great idea. Also, the wildcard idea for blocking domains is a great idea. I’ve mentioned it before, but my Yahoo wishlist would include more blocked address capability, as someone here mentioned as well.
The photo is a keeper.
I hope this isn’t embarassing for Yahoo, but I didn’t get the email you mentioned, Ryan.
March 4th, 2008 at 3:23 am
Need to expand the number of blocked addresses, And make it easier to Sort by domain name…
March 4th, 2008 at 3:30 am
Yahoo does a poor job of controlling span senders…I’d change to gmail if I hadn’t been using yahoo mail for so many years… less spam problems with Gmail and hot mail addresses…
March 5th, 2008 at 10:10 am
In the listing of blocked addresses between the “Remove” buttons, I can highlight all the addresses but can’t copy them. I would like to do this so I can easily screen for multiple domains by cutting and pasting them all into word and make a table with the “@” as a column separator. Then I can sort on the domains and see the ones that have more than one address. Can you please turn on the copy capability of this address block? Or tell me how to do it?
Thanks, Steve
March 5th, 2008 at 10:13 am
BTW, I am in Classic mail view and still can’t copy to list of addresses. I am using Firefox, guess I will try it in IE.

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I keep flagging stuff as “not spam” in my spam folder, and it keeps ending up in my spam folder. Is there a way to fix that? If not, It would be great if I could set up an “approved list” just like I can set up a “blocked list”
March 7th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Does anyone from Yahoo look at these comments? Why is it that we can’t get messages marked as span to be automatically put on the block address list? Why can’t we create a filter to allow messages from ONLY those in our address blook to be put into our Inbox. Why are some many issues not every address that are brought up time and again on various Yahoo message boards, groups, blogs, etc?
March 7th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
hi ryan, same questions from me,why u can’t use filter to chose only valid email like people that r in our address book………
March 13th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I guess I will have to find another provider as Yahoo mail is #*^&^$ I have used it for years and have even had my business email forwarded to it because of the spam guard. Within the last month, their spam guard has quit working, and the emails I want to receive are ending up in my bulk folder, many are from the same sender will sometimes go to my in box, and other times go to the bulk folder. Yahoo’s only solution is to keep checking not spam which I have done but it continues to occur. With 200 - 300 emails each day, I don’t have time to continually search the bulk folder for the ones to move to my inbox which had until recently had been routed correctly. They appear to have serious customer service issues.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:37 am
I would love to have a service from Yahoo (I’m willing to pay for it) where only emails from addresses in my address list are allowed to come through to my inbox. If an email is from an address that is not in my address list, a form would be sent back to the sender asking them to provide information on who they are (this would eliminate spam), so I then have an opportunity to see if I want to accept their email. Could you at Yahoo create this service?
Thanks.

Interestingly, perhaps, my blocked addresses function will not accept anything but complete addresses — i.e., no domain names.
June 26th, 2008 at 5:22 am
How do you get to the blocked address list???
I’ve read most of the emails, but none says how to get there and the HELP function in my mailbox doesn’t seem to know what I’m asking.
Please help…
