Send in your Yahoo! Mail tips

If you’ve been reading or a while, you’ve probably noticed that I like to offer up tips and tutorials to help you use Yahoo! Mail. If you look to the right you’ll even notice that I’ve updated the categories to make them simpler, and to have a dedicated Tips & Tutorials category.
So far I’ve pulled from my own experience, and also circled up with folks on the Mail and Tutorial teams, but I know that dedicated as all of you are (heck, you are reading a product blog after all) that you must have some excellent tips too.
Whether you have tips for the All-New Mail, for Classic Mail, or something that applies to both, I’d love to hear from you. So I’ve created a dedicated form that is just for your tips. Be sure to include a valid email address, because if we use your tip I’ll be contacting you to find out what you want as your “reward”!
Keep in mind that when I say dedicated I do mean dedicated … so please only use it for user tips. Any product suggestions, customer care requests, or other off topic submissions, will not be recorded or responded to. If this form process works well I will examine how we might use it for other things.
Have fun, and let them rip!

I have a tip for Yahoo!
Make the print much largeer on the new Yahoo email.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
@Goldie: Can’t you increase the font size in the options screen (under the “general” tab)?
February 7th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
I often mark items in my filtered folders as “Unread”, to get back to them at a later time. Sometimes, I forget how many of these I may have in each folder; & may not realize I have received new mail in that folder. It would be helpful to have some sort of attention “getter”, when new mail is received in those folders only. Such as, maybe changing the color of the folder to red, which would catch your eye. Or, maybe highlighting the folder name, etc. Whichever way would be easiest to program. Thank you.

How bout more than one type of “Flag Message” ie. “Flag message” - “Flag +Followup” - “Flag +re-read later” - “Flag +personal-drop-menu-here”
February 8th, 2008 at 3:26 am
RE to all super duper’d lottery winners.
Please forward your received phishing scams to the relevant senders e-mail service provider, please ensure that the full header is shown.

I would love for YAHOO to have a reply/receive option! And I totally agree with the comment regarding the Beta version-stop it already.
February 8th, 2008 at 7:32 am
I, too, wish you would stop with the Beta number. Enough already. Still getting more SPAM than I can handle in my INBOX. Gosh, just can’t stop winning those foreign lotteries. I’ll never be able to spend all of my winnings. And half of my legit e-mails end up in my SPAM folder. Go figure.
Also,Ryan K., can you figure out a way to change the font size and style, along with color perhaps, in the mailbox. Thanks.
February 8th, 2008 at 8:14 am
Why do I get all kinds of spam sent to addresses that are NOT mine. Some are close, but, so what. I’d appreciate receiving only email of any class addressed to my EXACT yahoo email address.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I think yahoo mail service should be like the regular mail service in charging fee. Lets say you can work it out with a charge card company and to send/receive mail is $.45 where yahoo keeps a portion of the fee, then this will cut on junk mail. You can certainly charge higher for international mail like the post office and this will cut down on lot of the scan email that we get.
The sender will only send mail where he wants to send it and where he can get results for his efforts. When the receiver gets junk mail, we know that this was directed at the receiver for a purpose and not fshing like we have now.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:40 am
That’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard. About the time Yahoo starts charging for mail service they won’t have a customer left. $.45 per? Are you nuts? No place else charges for e-mail accounts. It’s a competetive world. I’d rather keeping dumping junk mail than pay for an e-mail account. My high speed is costly enough.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:41 am
i mentioned this before but it would be nice to have Priorities set up, High, Normal, Low would be good and read receipts could be helpful.

February 8th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Anne_hi, I had the same idea, but the price would only need to be 1 penny to send an email to one of these special mail accounts. When it becomes popular enough then everybody will buy a dollar (or 5 or $10) per year to send mail. Bulk email will stop because 1,000,000 emails would be $10,000 — too much for scam artists but affordable for real corporations.
OH, a much more FEASIBLE IDEA!!! Just require CAPTCHA ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha ) from people who are not (a) a trusted company with a signature, or (b) someone already accepted as one of your contacts.

@Goldie (1st comment) both IE7 and Firefox allow you to Increase or Decrease your text size. On IE7 you need the Menu Bar visible (toggle it on using right mouse button near the top area of the browser). For both IE7 and Firefox, look under View and then under Text Size to Increase or Decrease the size. You can also use the shortcuts Ctrl + and Ctrl -. Note that the plus symbol might require the shift key to be pressed along with the Ctrl key.

I just got a minor update with some great small features today! The first two are kinda cool: you can click a message’s title and view it’s thread (all w/ same title -Re,Fw…). Also, you can click L and R arrows next to the title to jump between messages of a common thread w/in same folder.
The last one is just awesome, and it’s something I’ve long lobbied for. When composing Emails, the messages are auto saved as drafts, and these drafts are auto-deleted after the message is sent. Also, they can be manually saved using the “Save Draft” button, and they’ll still be auto-deleted after sending the message (because they’re now in the sent folder). This is much like Gmail’s auto draft save/delete feature, except this saves not just on a fixed time interval, but also every time focus is changed to a different Y!Mail tab (viewing folder, RSS, or anything else). It’s also pretty nice because it tells the time of the last draft auto-save. Before, I rarely used the “Save Draft” button because I didn’t like having to constantly jump to the drafts folder and delete the obsolete draft after sending the message. Now I’m free to save away, and I’ll never have to worry about losing my message. I could pull the plug on the PC, and the draft will remain
Wuhu!

if you add someone u don’t no don’t talk to them and delete them from your friends list because they can give out personel iformation to other people and they could find u and hurt or can give u a virise to your computer or they can even send bad stuff to u and 1 more thing never meet a computer stranger because if they send u a picture of them and it’s not really them and in person they can really hurt u so never meet a computer stranger.

why on earth did you change a very good system?

“Please forward your received phishing scams to the relevant senders e-mail service provider…” -Chief Mike
Chief Mike, I find your advice about what to do with phishing scams as completely naive. Does the average layman know how to find the sender’s TRUE email service provider, when the sender is obviously attempting to cover it up? I had the misfortune of scammers using my domain name as a fake “from” address, and the result is getting literally 100-1000’s of bounceback emails every day. Phishers cover their tracks well enough that most people (and mail servers) seem to have no clue how to forward their email to relevant providers, and instead send email to the fake sender, making life even worse for that bigger victim.
February 9th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Despite your claims to be improving your spam filters, I receive more and more spam every day at my yahoo address. I have even reached my limit of blocked addresses, which hardly seems fair. I get over 1500 spams in my bulk folder a week and it is not from signing up to dumb websites, since that is not something I tend to do. it’s ridiculous and I have switched my main address to another server, where I have no problems. I am also now receiving spams in my messenger! No one should be able to contact me on messenger unless they’re invited. Quite frankly, I have had it with Yahoo and I will be taking down my entire address once everything is switched. I cringe at the thought of what some of that spam could do to my computer.
February 9th, 2008 at 9:19 am
a lot of websites ask for your email address. despite my promises to myself, i get hundreds of spam messages this way, probably my own fault.
what has worked has been the integration of Yahoo! IDs into ATT Yahoo!. if you use a different name you’re relatively safe from spam, give that name to your friends, and have it go into a seperate inbox. i use a rule set up so that any email To: myaddress@domain.net goes into a folder marked myaddress inbox where myaddress is my ATT sign in, only the integrated Yahoo! id addressed mail is left in the inbox–and a lot of that gets filtered into subject folders

Guess what folks? Don’t say anything about ad.yieldmanager or Right Media in this blog . Looks like the powers that be don’t like any bad publicity.
February 9th, 2008 at 11:30 am

I cannot get into my old email box that I had just this morning! What the hell is going on!?!
February 10th, 2008 at 7:38 am
Get rid of the Beta! Your new Classic mail is awful. Limited fonts, options, etc. You think you improve things but actually make them worse. The stationery is old and outdated. Can’t you think of something new in that? I’m not renewing my mail classic. I like the basic.
February 10th, 2008 at 7:56 am
no way don’t get rid of the new mail
Larry Joe if you want the old mail go back to it
but i like this one;p

Why does the spell checker in your e-mail allow 1st and 3rd, but not 2nd and 4th, unless the “nd” and “th” are capitalized? Thanks….jas

I cannot get into e-mail. What is going on?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:05 am
Please correct your homepage. Its written “Forget your username or password” instead of “Forgot your username and password”.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Is anybody else having trouble logging in to e-mail today? My password is not working so I went to “change Password” and it does not complete the process. I am locked out of important e-mails today.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:51 am

TOO MANY ADS ON YAHOO MAIL!!!
February 11th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I came upon an unpleasant surprise when I opened my Yahoo! Mail today. My view of my folder list on the left column had been cut almost in half by a big ad.
Really unpleasant, please Yahoo! cut back a little on the advertising!

How long is Yahoo gonna leave Firefox 3 users with a broken experience with the new Mail? All the Yahoo commentors says it’s fixed internally but until now still no rollout of the fix?
February 11th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
I see I’m not the only one who wishes I could do something about yieldmanager. I’ve tried every which way to block their particular ads in Yahoo Mail but they keep coming back. It’s like hijack adware or something. It looks really low-budget and makes Yahoo look bad that they allow it.
February 11th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
One reason I am not using the Yahoo Mail
Beta is that I use the old mail
interface’s View feature to sort my
mail.
My friends are all in my address book.
I select View Messages from Unknown
Senders, so I see only mail from
utilities, banks, etc and put it in a
folder for mail from things. Then the
rest of my email in my inbox is from
people I know, which goes into a folder
for mail from people.
If I could have the mailbox view filter
feature in the beta, I would switch. An
alternative is to allow me to create a
filter for people in my addressbook, or
in an addressbook group, which goes
automatically into a different folder.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I believe your first sentence needs to be corrected. You say “if you have been reading or awhile …but you probably meant” if you have been reading for a while…. I really think this generation has blown it. I know spell check would not have caught this but in an earlier time a proof reader might have. ees
February 12th, 2008 at 7:09 am
In my Yahoo Mail I can’t use any buttons (they are doesn’t work). What can I do?
February 12th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Why do we have to consistantly keep entering hard to read codes in order to send people in our Address Book messages? This is really annoying. Sometimes I have to enter 3, 4 and 5 times in order to send each and every message. Why can’t Yahoo just accept that we have friends who happen to have email addresses in our Address Book and NO we don’t send our friends spam, we send them personally typed messages. What is up with that?
February 12th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I love yahoo a whole lot!!! I got my e-mail @ yahoo. My whole family has yahoo. I think dat we should. Why can’t you guys just sell Xbox 360’s, and Wii’s ?
February 12th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
While not really a tip or trick, I wanted to give props to the Y! Mail team for squashing a bug (or likely bugs) preventing Mail from working in Firefox 3. The latest beta (3) from Mozilla was released today, but my favorite new feature isn’t from the browser developers, it’s the fixed bug from Yahoo!
Thanks guys!
February 13th, 2008 at 8:47 am
Whoa, today logged in to new Y!Mailand clicked a new message w/ several attachments. To my surprise, I saw the listed attachments as well as a “Download All” button! Y!Mail just keeps getting better and better!
February 14th, 2008 at 8:27 am
happy valentines day!!!!!
February 14th, 2008 at 8:50 am
friends, am not able to send a attachment using yahoo mail. its a screen saver file it get atached without any error. and after clicking send it shows it sent to specified id.but it i get failure notice from yahoo after few minutes… any solution for this
February 14th, 2008 at 10:24 am
No Mel, you are not alone in wanting yield manager gone! The basic problem is that Yahoo owns Right Media and states this connection in the Privacy Policy. with the message that if you don’t want redirects to various sites you need to opt out at each site (if this oiption is offered). Right Media does not offer anything for Yahoo users. Surely Yahoo can find a way to keep track of how many people log in without redirecting everyone to yield manager at logon.
In my opinion YAhoo attached this to our logon for some kind of identification, maybe to see how many are still using Classic and not. using beta. Once I log in and the gold padlock https is gone I am back to http www yahoo.com, so the “secure site” means what???
February 14th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I would like to have my old version of Yahoo mail back. The screen is not large enough to view an entire picture upon receiving Emails. Also, I would like to see a larger font. I went to options didn’t see anyway I could change the viewing area or change the font. It was fine just the way it was. Please give me a choice here.
Thanks,
carolynmoss2001@yahoo.com
