Calling all Y!Mail users on the iPhone!

Before I go any further … of course that pun was intended! In keeping with a decidedly Apple theme this week, I thought this would be a good opportunity to probe some of you Apple focused readers.Since its launch last summer, much has been made of the iPhone’s Mail and Web browsing functions. While the device does offer an internet that “is not watered down”, many users still like having a streamlined version of their favorite sites. On the other hand some folks strenuously object to streamlining, believing that it is in fact a watering down of the internet.
I’ve enabled a somewhat streamlined version of the blog that will automatically load if you are on an iPhone, but I’m also interested in creating an even more iPhone styled version (like Macworld’s special iPhone Central site) that would be an optional interface. Take a look at the currently enabled version and let me know what you think.
Additionally, some users prefer to check Y!Mail through the browser interface, rather than the iPhone’s Mail application, and it would be very useful to get a feel for how many prefer each option.
In the interest of serving my readers, I want to make sure that I know about what you prefer. This brings me to the latest polling questions!

What is the deal with the push mail? Seems as though there are still some issues to work out with this feature?
Wondering when this might be improved…

Actually, I have an iTouch, which has same useful features as iPhone, but without the annoying and expensive attributes of a phone.

Don’t forget: the iPod touch is part of this, too!
I’ve answered the above survey as if I was an iPhone user, but you should really consider changing the text to “iPhone / iPod touch” since the iPod touch uses the same version of Safari as the iPhone, and has had that feature since launch (the Mail program, however, is new within the past 30 days). I’m sure there’s a number users using Safari on the iPod touch to browse to this blog, just as I am.

To James Gardner:
I had the trouble with the User/Password thing. After a lot of frustration, I finally figured out it was because I had a special character in my password and entering it through the iphone just didn’t work. Once I changed the password to all letters and numbers, everything works fine.

I have an iPhone and am very happy that I get push email from Yahoo. Please DO NOT waste any more time reformatting for the iPhone. INSTEAD, please spend that time activating IMAP email for all email users. This is long overdue.

Hi everyone,
-
Many apologies to my iPod Touch folks out there. I’ve updated the poll to be a little more accurate.

James & Bill,
-
Thanks for the heads-up and tip. I’ll do some digging to see if I can find out anything more about the character issue and see if there might be a fix needed.

Ok… now I’m actually viewing this blog through my iPod touch, and figured I’d offer some feedback:
The theme looks good, and the individual post pages look great. Unfortunately, the homepage which lists all articles (at ymailupdates.com) has some issue where a far wider screen is being created than is neccessary, with lots of whitespace to the right of the content. Granted, I’m able to double-tap the screen to zoom in on the column, but this is obviously some kind of rendering error.
Otherwise, the site looks great, and probably doesn’t need the fancier navigation that Macworld’s iPhone site employs.
February 15th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Addendum to the “too much whitespace” on the ymailupdates.com homepage… I see what’s causing the error.
The summary for the Jan 23rd post “Screencast: Use the sign-in seal to thwart fraudsters” is pulling a text string into the article summary which starts off as “YAHOO.Shortcuts.annotationSet=YAHOO.Shortcuts…” and goes on with an unbroken string for a l-o-n-g ways. It’s obviously some kind of code that only the server is supposed to see, but it’s getting pulled into the 1/23 post summary. Since the text string is unbroken, it’s forcing Safari on the iPhone/iPod touch to shrink the whole page until it fits on one line.
Resolve that issue with the 1/23 post, and the homepage should look great!

Can’t the back-end track how/where people are pulling their mail?
As far as the blog goes, I read all blogs on my iPhone via Google Reader. So, there’s no need for you to reformat.
As long as you’re soliciting feedback though, I’ll reiterate that I’d like IMAP support on the desktop - web and iPhone are great, now give it to me in an application. I’d even be willing to pay more for my mail upgrade.

About half the time I use Ymail to check my Yahoo mail from my Iphone I get a message from the server saying “this service is temporarily unavailable” It would be great if you could “streamline” that to stop happening!
February 16th, 2008 at 11:55 am
I use the Mail application on my iPhone for the “push” mail features. Thank you for making this available!!!
While iPhone’s mail uses push & IMAP, the real value of IMAP is so that *all* clients have access to the *same* messages and folders.
Please, please make IMAP available for OS X’s Mail as well. The big value of IMAP is in keeping all clients in sync, but that value is completely lost when only ONE client has IMAP and the rest are forced to use POP.

it’s good, I will be waiting i-Phone from yahoo

r.sharethis.com cookies on this blog .
Of course we can all get rid of these but why should we have to put up with the intrusion, just to read the email blog???
Still no meaningful explanation for the “secure” logon or yieldmanager. How’s come?????
February 17th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
ditto on the IMAP comment. Long overdue. If gmail can offer it, why not Yahoo?
I also found that your blog loaded with far too much whitespace on the right. Presumably a stylesheet issue. You’re using the contentrobot plugin for wordpress, right? If you modified the stylesheet, doublecheck your width attributes.

How about making it work better with WinMo phones first?
February 18th, 2008 at 10:08 am
This is outrageous. Your SMTP servers have been flaky since Thursday and you keep bombarding me with all your stupid new features. Get the basics to work, guys. C’mon, it’s 2008! SMTP should be easy. You should have gladly accepted Microsoft’s offer for your incompetent souls.

look….all this technical jargon is giving me a headache. All I know is that I am not impressed. It is more of a pain and not worth my time. This “push mail” everyone is talking about is convenient on new mail, but I use Safari to view all my mail the regular way. As of last night, its been reformatted to be viewed like the pushmail and I am ready to throw this phone out the window. Can anyone speak plain English to get me so I can get the original format back?

i am just a beginner in terms of high-technology! I love my iPhone esp the emailing part. I’ m having problems everytime i push Sent , during the hours of 5:00-6:00 pm & around 9:00 pm. It takes a long while before it will download my email, so I keep pushing the Sent when it doesn’t appear on the Sent list, then the next day, I could see a repetitions of the same mail I sent! What did i do wrong? Second, when I am using Safari in my iPhone for a quite periods of time , it suddenly stops and back to HOME page, I have to start all over again! Why?

Push mail just plain does not work from my iPhone. I actually added a new Yahoo account, with the same password, which works, just because I’d seen some forum entries that implied it might be having non-alpha password characters.
My existing account always gets an authentication error, referencing an imap (I think, it’s been awhile) server that the Apple store guy said made no sense.

I’m having the same problem with the imap error and it not recognizing my password. I know my password works because I can log into yahoo no problem.
btw: I also manually added the pop servers for yahoo and I’m intermittenly getting the error there, too. (again this all works great over webmail AND on my laptop)

Apple really has to fix their mail. I put in all my info about my yahoo and it keeps saying that my password or username is incorrect when it’s not!! It works fine on my computer. Any ideas about why this is happening and how to fix it??
