All-New Yahoo! Mail arrives for Safari 3

There’s a very good chance that many of you have already noticed, but just in case you haven’t, I’m here with some delightful news for my fellow Mac users. Yahoo! Mail, a key starting point for millions of people around the world, is now fully accessible from Safari 3.0 on the Mac!
Our guys have been working feverishly to make sure that everything works as intended. Some have even made the occasional trip down the road to “The Mother-ship” (as many a Mac enthusiast has called it), but none were nice enough to bring me any gear from their company store. ![]()
I guess I’ll just have to make a trip myself. Anyway … back to the subject at hand.
The rollout is already underway, and we hope to have the updates out to most of you within the next couple weeks. Once it’s completed, folks running the most recent update of Tiger (OS 10.4.11), as well as those using any version of Leopard (OS 10.5.x), will have a version of Safari that plays nice with the All-New Yahoo! Mail. Or maybe it’s a version of Safari that the All-New Mail plays nice with. Either way, they are pals now, and that’s what really matters.
Of course Mac users could already use Safari to access Mail Classic, and Firefox to access both, but with this roll-out, the latest version of the world’s most popular Webmail service will be available to an even broader audience of Mac users.
There are some other enhancements that aren’t Mac specific, so be on the lookout. I’ll be back with more news on that soon.

what about the iphone version of safari????
February 13th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Thanks a bunch guys!
February 13th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Excellent news! Glad to hear Yahoo is making this happen, as I’ve been wanting this feature for quite some time. I just hope that if Microsoft buys Yahoo this type of support continues. Microsoft has a bad record with cross platform support (Messenger, IE, etc.)
February 13th, 2008 at 11:20 am
a version of Safari with which the All-New Mail plays nice.
February 13th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Good job guys! Yahoo always impoves, keep going! I wish you’ll be not bought by anyone and stay independant and creative as you are.
February 13th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Will the updates allow access and full use of Yahoo! mail from Safari on IBM compatible PCs? I tried Safari and rejected it largely because it didn’t play nice with any version of Yahoo! mail especially the (then) beta.
February 13th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Seriously, this is very welcome news. I’ve been using the “Um, are you sure you want to use this in your unsupported browser?” version on Safari 3 and the quirks were driving me a little batty. Before I read this post I noticed that I could select addresses from the drop-down menu when using the autofill feature. Whew!
Now if you’d just let me use IMAP so I could have Yahoo Mail on my computer, I’d be in heaven.
Before anyone recommends it; I hate POP email. Worthless.
February 13th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Your SMTP servers really suck!
Sent obit and arrangements at 8.31 this am, folks did not receive until almost 2pm this afternoon.
Emailed you about it, received no answer to request, received stock reply instead.
Bummer. I have learned top expect better from Yahoo.
Seems Microsoft has you on edge.
February 13th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Yahoo! Mail experienced a login error: Login error:
name:TypeError
message:Null value
Leopard 10.5.2 Safari.
Also, please get rid of POP3 or provide IMAP option, at least for paid customers… Really, this bad joke must end.
February 13th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
You forgot to mention the new Yahoo! Mail also works with Safari on Windows.
Still, this is great news, and I’m glad that Safari is getting official support.
February 13th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
That’s great for safari users, any news on when we’ll see firefox 3 support? Hopefully BEFORE it comes out of beta!
February 13th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Well done guys! Keep up the GREAT work. Love the new build.
Some of my favorite new features that I have found so far:
1) Download All for when there are multiple attachments is a great addition.
2) Searching by clicking on the subject or on the sender is a really nice feature.
3) Arrows for moving to next/previous emails in thread rocks.
4) Clicking on the subject button on new emails brings a smile to my face almost every time. Someone at YMail has a great sense of humor.
And don’t pay any attention to the whingers on these comments. There is a large group of us (too quiet some times) that really loves what you guys are doing.
And to all the whingers (and you know who you are) go over to Hotmail and piss in their sandbox. Leave this one alone! I’d like to see any of you build something with 10% the traffic as YMail and 2% of its functionality.
Ymail team - thanks for all the hard work.
February 13th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
This is welcome news. I would be tempted to use Safari now on my Mac if you could also make the Yahoo toolbar work there as well. My bookmarks accessed from the Yahoo toolbar is my second most-used feature after mail.
February 13th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
why u keep telling me BS about where to get streaming quotes on yahoo finance and put it on or send info so i can, not happy yahoo camper. I know i have to have button to turn on/off, first I need button,So how do I get the button ? Will yahoo even give what goes with program by their own admission on site
February 13th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
This is fine, but could you please tell me why I now have to sign in every time I start up my Yahoo mail?
Four weeks ago, if we checked the box saying, “Keep me signed in” it did.
Now, every day when I turn on my computer, I have to put in my information and sign in to Yahoo again. It’s bothersome. Can you tell someone at Yahoo, we liked it before, when that little checkbox (to keep us signed in,) actually worked !
February 13th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Seems you are editing posted comments.
Now it is taking almost 24 hours for SMTP
(POP) email to be sent!
BUMMER!!!
February 13th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
You overwork you guys.
Billing and email inquiries are responded to by the same person! - Alton - BUMMER!
Alton says “Please be assured that we are aware of this issue and have escalated this to our engineering Department for further investigation. We hope to have it resolved as soon as possible.”
Yeah, right. Please do more than investigate.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
For Scott -
You must have installed a program that removes your cookies when you close your browser.
That makes you have to sign-in each time.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
It’s nice to hear safari is supported by yahoo mail. Hopefully opera will be supported in the future
February 13th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Is this also going to fix the Firefox 3 errors?
February 13th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
I also experienced huge delays in sending emails on Feb 12th…almost 7 hours at times. Only found out because I always send myself a copy of all my emails.
Now the link for checking mail in the beta version doesn’t work, so I had to switch back o the original.
You would think Yahoo would send out a blurb indicating and admitting a problem exists.
I’m considering switching to another provider for my email.
Frustrated!
February 13th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Hi Ryan, would you happen to know when the all-new Yahoo Mail will work with Firefox 3? Hopefully soon! Thanks.
February 13th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Seems like the Y! FF3b3 bug is already fixed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=398381 but alas is not yet rolled out completely, at least not into my account given that as of today I still see the errors.
February 13th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Do you mind checking what’s wrong with my email?
bobbytoat(at)yahoo.com
I have been unable to login for 5-6 different times, and on each occassions, it last for at least 24 hours (sometimes up to 3 days).
I get this error when I login and I am supposed to send a Error1 card to the support team, but when I proceed to do just that, I am required to type in my password again, and again it prompts me for password if I try to send the Error1 card. Unfortunately there is also no email address of the support team listed anywhere, so I hope I’m not making a big mistake here requesting for your help. Please advise. Thanks!

Kev,

The version of Safari that runs on the iPhone is different from any of the other versions that are available. Fortunately iPhone users have a built in Mail application that is really good, and extremely easy to navigate on the iPhone.

hello i hope i can get the truth email in yahoo my dear
February 14th, 2008 at 8:13 am
Well, like always, whenever you announce a new feature we just want to complain about what is missing
So, I just want to add my concern over support for Firefox 3.
And it would be really nice if Yahoo Mail supported RTL (for Hebrew & Arabic) when composing. It should be easy to implement since you only need to add a dir=rtl tag to the html of the outgoing mail (I’m a web developer, but of course only your developers really know how hard it is).
Cheers
February 14th, 2008 at 8:28 am
The iPhone’s Mail application is indeed handy, for everything but Yahoo Mail. The iPhone-YahooMail proprietary authentication protocol has a huge security hole which allows for a replay attack and could lead users to having their account compromised. It’s preferable to check your email with Safari on the iPhone.
Why they didn’t implement IMAP & SSL instead of developing another authentication protocol is beyond me…
February 14th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Thank you… been looking forward to this for a long time. The email header for me still shows early truncations of subject lines and attachment links are out of view, but maybe I’m not seeing the latest version yet?
February 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
I spoke to a Yahoo representative at C.E.S. in Las Vegas regarding having to resign into Yahoo on the iPhone after visiting other sites even though I signed in for two weeks and did not sign out. My iPhone software is up to date, So I wonder why this is an ongoing problem. Is any iPhone uses having similar problems? If so, please post commemts!
February 14th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
It would be EASY and GREAT to have MORE input sections when you want to add a mail contact. Please, please, please put in more lines for telephone numbers and addresses, and company name. There is enough empty space on the input screen for this. Think about it for a moment. Wouldn’t a person want to do it at the first time, like add name, address, phone 1, phone 2, phone 3, address. I add, but then have to go back edit to add common items. Please correct. Thanks.
David

Don’t tease me, bro’!!
Where’s the new mail for Safari? Can I get it, or not?
February 14th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
A few of you have asked about support for Firefox 3 Beta, and I’m happy to report that the updated version plays nice with that too. If you tried and it’s not working, that just means the server farm your account is on hasn’t been updated yet. As I mentioned in the post, this should only take a couple weeks to get out to everyone.

No luck here…! And for some reasons it confronts me with the same error messages like when I try to log on using Firefox3…!?! First those two error messages…
(stuff like: “Yahoo! Mail experienced a login error: Login error: name:TypeError message:Null value”)
…and then it attempts to load new mail messages, but takes forever — until it finally recommends I should switch to Classic Mail…!?! :(((
(Mail appears to be taking longer to load than usual.
This could be a temporary glitch. Try refreshing your page. Or for this session only, click here to see if Mail Classic loads faster.”)
If I don’t do that I cannot even sign off, clicking the link just won’t work…!
Oh, and every now and then I get the “your browser is not supported” message when I try to log on…not always though…!? It’s still extremely messed up…!!!

Thanks for the info, alex_mayora. I’m still getting the name:NS_ERROR when using Firefox 3. I look forward to when the fix is rolled out to my server farm.

Thank you, too, Ryan K. Great blog.
February 15th, 2008 at 6:46 am
the new e-mail is full of problems. I won’t be using it as I can’t access my mail anymore. I switched back to classic mail. please fix!!!!
February 15th, 2008 at 7:44 am
As has been remarked: now if Yahoo will finally allowing its PAYING customers to have IMAP mail — which, incredibly, has been available for some time to the non-paying users! — we can finally say Yahoo Mail is catching up to Google.
This is the first time I’ve ever gotten less with a paying account than with a free one.
February 15th, 2008 at 9:31 am
So, I tried to check out the “all new email” link in the upper right hand corner and now I can’t even log-in at all to get my email. Instead, I get the Microsoft error report right after I login and it then shuts my entire browser down. I can’t even get anywhere else in Yahoo Mail at all to even REVERT BACK to Classic. Needless to say I am pretty unhappy. I wish Yahoo would just make it easier to revert back if a feature isn’t functioning properly…
Please, for the love of god, change my settings back to the old “Classic style” so that I can at least get to my email. Beta blows and I regret ever clicking that “new email” link…

It’sreally nice with that update. I know tehe is still some enhancements to be done. There are two thing I really wish for my birthday. When I use safi with the new version of Yahoo Mail, there is som stribes when I’m scrolling down a messege. I guess that’s one of the things to be corected. The other thing is a big issue. It is well known that with Yahoo Mail it’s possible to get mail from other mail account. But it would be so nice if Yahoo Mail AUTOMATICLY could check these accounts. The it would be possible to check all mail accounts from Yahoo Go on the cell phone. Thank you for a great Yahoo Mail.
All the best,
Florian.

This update for Safari has been a long time coming. I’m really impressed with how well the Yahoo team was able to make this happen. I’m a very happy Yahoo Mail user now! No more Classic! Thank you and keep up the great work.

I have been unable to access my emails on my Apple Mac for some weeks now. This does not apply to other comps. Will this upgrade solve my problem, please?
February 20th, 2008 at 1:22 am
What an awesome announcement!
I love the All-New Yahoo! Mail and to have it play nicely on Safari, I’m gonna love it harder!!
I like to thank all who are involved in making this happen! You have put a smile to all the Safari-Yahoo! Mail users. The wait is exciting and I look forward for this official day.

February 24th, 2008 at 7:19 am
I’m running Leopard and Safari 3.04 and this morning I’m not a happy guy. Somehow the new mail came up when we went to our MailPlus account. It didn’t like the password we’ve been using for over 9 years. I went through a change of password, and still didn’t work.
I switched to Firefox and got yahoo classic and no problems. How can I point safari to use yahoo classic?
This is the same problem as Nathan from Feb 15. Please let us switch between classic and new. New does not work on my config.
February 24th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Sorry, but not for Safari 3.04 for Windows. It still gives me a web page that says I’m using an unsupported browser. It allows me to click through, however, and with a small problem allows me to use all of the beta features without problem.
The problem is not consistent, but causes the mail client to be unable to access my account.

Why isn’t there an easy place to contact Yahoo in case of an emergency? I cannot log on to my account and I have been looking for 2 days now trying to find a place to contact you. What if my account has been comprimised? You can’t contact me via email so how do I get an answer? Phone number please? You may contact me via my boyfriends email at dfarmboy2003@yahoo.com

Have just started using a Mac and am happy to see that I can access my Yahoo mail using Safari - but there are still a number of “bugs”.
- Big scroll bar appears after attaching a file blocking the displayed name of the attached file
- Can’t arrow down the suggested auto-fill list for email addresses to choose one lower on the list
- Have to switch to full message view to see what is attached. Otherwise all you see is a paperclip.
