Yahoo! Mail makes a splash at CES

The image “http://yodel.yahoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/jerry-yang-at-2008-ces.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. If you’ve been following the news flowing out of CES in Las Vegas, you’ve probably already heard that Chief Yahoo! Jerry Yang presented some glimpses of the possible future of Yahoo! The 45+ minute presentation leads with some interesting advancements in Yahoo! Mobile, but the real meat & potatoes portion (at least for Mail users) comes about 30 minutes in.

Jerry then gives a concept demo (translation: not an example of what the product will be, but more a look at the direction we are headed) that shows a very integrated type of next generation user experience built largely around Yahoo! Mail.

ZDNet’s Dan Farber gave a pretty detailed recap on his blog, and since I care about all of you so much (or because I never miss an opportunity to play with video software, you choose ) I went ahead and captured the Mail portion of the presentation in a separate video clip. It’s still a pretty huge file, so if you aren’t on a fast connection you may want check out a streaming version of the whole webcast (high, medium, low) and just eagerly await the Mail portion (starts at just about 29:30).

Hi alx,
-
It’s comforting to me that you have confidence that I do read these comments (since I do), because I often worry that readers think that I don’t.
-
That being said, I have been raising that feedback with our product folks and as soon as I have any news I will definitely be here to share it.
-
Thanks for reading and thanks for taking the time to comment!

Yeah - all your announcements have been boring. I’m a paying (sucker) of Yahoo Mail Plus and I can’t even get IMAP access and Gmail gives it away for free. I want IMAP capability!

Also, an updated calendar/tasks would be nice too since I use them as well. The competition is heating up the offerings!

Aside from the feedback on this blog, I am worried that Yahoo is not doing enough to solicit feedback from people on the use of YMail. There’s no suggestion board, and not much way to offer you folks insight on priorities for us users.

Jerry’s product up there is a great example of why I feel Yahoo is out of touch with many users on a great many things. To me personally, I would find it utterly useless, way more that I want, and somewhat invasive of my privacy. I don’t need to share my every tiny update of a profile with my whole group of friends, ferinstance. I guess I also feel that I don’t need an all in one site to coordinate all my web activity. Some places, like MySpace, are pure hell to navigate and so sure, I might like to just get some updates/messages, but mostly, I like going to the sites themselves.

I guess I may be too old fashioned, but this really struck me as a toy for the silicon valley crowd, and not something particularly useful to me, Joe User. Then again, I don’t even own a cell phone, or IM very often, and have never texted in my life. So, I suppose I should content myself with dancing with the dinosaurs and STFU, eh? Still, it feels like this project, and many other Yahoo upgrades are not going in a user-driven direction. Yahoo Groups is doing a great job of integrating user feedback. I recommend looking at their process. I was pleasantly impressed, and that’s hard to get from me, especially lately regarding Yahoo.

Thanks for the sneak peek anyway.

Ummm…which of the video clips actually work? I tried downloading the edited .mov clip and it gets a missing object in jscript.

Then I tried high stream…nothing. Next I tried medium stream…”video not available.”

Okay, so I try low stream…same thing–”video not available.”

Hi everyone,
-
I’m not sure what is happening with the streaming files, but I’m also getting an error when I try to access them. The message I get says that it should be only temporary.
-
The clipped file is hosted on the blog server, and I just tested it again to make sure it works. It does take LONG time to load, so you’ll need to be patient.

JLK,
-
We do actually have some other channels for collecting feedback already, but are always looking for more ways to tap into the needs of our users. This isn’t the only place we are looking :)
-
Thanks for the feedback on Jerry’s demo. Keep in mind that it is more of a concept than an actual product example. That being said we know that not everyone wants the same amount of integration in their experience. It will be something we look at very closely.
-
Thanks,
RyanK

As for the downloads, I got the download alright…the error was a JavaScript error when it finished downloading and was *supposed* to start playing. It said there was a missing object in the script. Typically this is caused by trying to call a function that has not been defined or looking for the file in the wrong location. Most likely the JavaScript is trying to play the downloaded file from a static location and the download placed it somewhere else.

Am still waiting for the feature “Reply” to when responding to E-Mails….have to arrow back and hit compose & send to reply to E-Mails. Seems simple to me to have that as a feature.

Still waiting to have on E-Mail as a feature~~~~ “reply to.” Have to arrow back to respond and then type in “compose.” to reply.
Seems to me that would be an easy feature as an application to your E-Mail feature.

I watched the video. It looks kinda cool, but also the thing is, it seems a bit impractical to count on everybody using those same social networks. Still, it was a cool demo, and it’ll also be a long way off. I know many have pushed for Gmail-like message conversations, and it looks like they were included in the demo.

For now, I hope we’ll see some less revolutionary, practical enhancements like full Opera support and an IM archive.

I don’t know what you are missing Sylvia, but every email I open has five buttons across the top: Delete, Reply, Forward, Spam and Move.

I too pay for yahoo plus and am frustrated by Yahoo’s lack of IMAP implementation.

I’m pretty sure if it is not done soon I will migrate to google, simply for IMAP even though I love yahoo web based interface a lot better

Hi Ryan

I skipped the video and read the transcript. Question for you Ryan… from what you know and in light of Jerry’s vision for Yahoo, Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Go, will (or is) the look and feel of Mail and Go open for mimicking (for UI integration purposes) by third party applications/frameworks? I am a heavy Yahoo Mail user (personal and business). Keep up the great work!

I am also a paying Yahoo business mail customer and find it a terrible service and will probably switch soon.

1. I can’t access the mail that I pay for on my mobile device because yahoo business mail accounts are tied to free accounts. I can only check the free account.

2. I can’t have both a forward turned on and POP access.

3. No push email services/ex
change server functionality.

4. Such a hassle to switch back and forth for spam protection and settings between classic and the new version.

5. The spam guard is HORRIBLE. If I send an email to someone and they reply, their email ends up in my spam box 90% of the time if we haven’t emailed before and I didn’t mark their message as spam.

Ugh. Please make it end. I haven’t switched yet because then I also have to move my domain hosting. So annoying.

I’ve been using Yahoo Mail since before we had the option of a yahoo.com.au address!!!!! I’d like 3 things please:

1. If I have a .com.au I can download my mail via POP for free. But because I’m a long-term customer I am penalised by being charged simply because I have a yahoo.com email address. I have repeatedly emailed support regarding this bu I get no reply. I expect the same here but I hope I am pleasantly surprised.

2. Why do I have to hit shift-m to check my non-yahoo accounts within yahoo mail. Why can’t it be (optionally if needed) set up to AUTOMATICALLY check all accounts, not just the yahoo one, both on startup and on the regular refresh cycle?

3. A few years ago we had the option of setting yahoo mail as the default mail program for windows, so that when an email link was clicked, our yahoo would open and the address (and subject) were populated. This was removed a few years ago. Although there are online help files telling me that if I simply install Y!Messenger I will have this option restored, it does not work! I have tried, both on XP and Vista, in both IE and Firefox (I prefer firefox!) yet none of these work. My mother has recently got her first POC. It was new, and therefore came with Vista. I quite like it (its no worse than XP was in the first year when we were all used to Win98and none of the drivers worked on the NT architecture!). I have set her up with Y!Mail, and have shown her both the online/web and download/POP versions. She and I bth prefer the web version, mainly for its security and virus scanning (files aren’t loaded to the PC by default). HOWEVER she is getting the cranks because she needs to cut & paste email addresses from web pages to yahoo. When this is someone who has NEVER owned a computer of any type since the Tandy/RadioShack TRS-80, you can understand the level of frustration she is going through just learning the basics we all take for granted - cut/copy/paste etc. PLEASE FIX IT! Surely it can’t be THAT hard. Geez Yahoo - you share advertising networks with Microsoft here in Australia (and may soon be owned by them anyway!) surely they can licence your email to be one of the default mail programs within XP and Vista!

Getting off my soapbox now. Looking forward to your replies.

Cheers
