Update: Sign-in Seal

Last week I posted a little video tutorial showing how to use the Sign-in Seal to have more confidence that you are logging into authentic Yahoo! pages.Wouldn’t you know it they went and changed how it looks only days after I posted it! I also heard from a few people that the file wouldn’t play/load properly for them.
Both of those items would qualify as “my bad”, so I’m here to make sure that you guys know about the updated appearance … and hopefully offer an alternative that can help some of you overcome any tech problems that were going on.
If you look at the screenshot on the right you’ll see that the folded down corner has been replaced with a more prominent, yellow, box. Once you have set the Sign-in Seal it looks the same as before, with a custom picture of your choosing.
I’ve also included the video again, but with a different player that I think will help those who had problems last time.

I’ve been using the sign-in seal since it first became available. A few days ago, I noticed a brief flash of the new graphic on my sign-in page and for a moment wondered whether hackers had found a way to thwart the sign-in seal. I’m relieved to know that the change that I saw is supposed to be there! Whew. Thanks for the update.
A lot of people gave you a hard time about your photo. You changed it. I liked it. Now you’ve changed it again. It’s hard to see you under the hat, behind the shades.

OK Ryan K. What do you think about the HUGE new acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft??
February 1st, 2008 at 6:25 am
Rob,
After I preview my new seal and save it, another screen appears on top of it reminding me to tell others about the seal who use the computer. I’m supposed to click the OK button, but I can’t seem to scroll down on this new screen, so I can’t complete the process. My seal doesn’t save without it. What am I doing wrong?

Good grief…if Microsoft takes control of Yahoo!…it frightens me to think of what will happen to the Yahoo! Network. Yeah, that’s exactly what Yahoo! needs right now…to be transformed into dismal mediocrity through dissection by one of the most greedy, consumer unfriendly companies in human history. Yahoo! couldn’t give me a better reason to move to Google than agreeing to be purchased by M$.

Sorry, I meant Ryan!

Ijust as well should change to Google now. If the yahoo’s at YAHOO only look at the “money” then all is lost. Microsoft can’t even compete with Yahoo for customer service, and ease of use.
If this unsolicited offer is accepted then we can expect a drop in service like I and many others had when AT&T (which couldn’t do in on there own) took over Cingular .
Good Luck, I expect your job is now on the line.

I just read an article on cnet that said Yahoo has been a huge proponent of open source. If that’s true – and I hope it is – then I would encourage you to make yahoo mail compatible with Firefox 3. Gmail is!

Gloria,
-
After you click to Save it the pop-up reminder that you describe should automatically center itself within your browser window.
-
I just tested it on mine again and it even moves around as you scroll the window up/down/left/right (to stay centered).
-
If you can’t see the purple “OK” button you may need to adjust the resolution on your screen. Otherwise you can try sending me a screenshot (ymailblog1[at]yahoo.com) and I’ll see if I can recommend something else.

I used the sign in logo before but when it got change I had trouble with downloading a logo but I FINALLY figured out how to do it I think it is a great ideal since Yahoo has been targeted by scammers my alerts of sites being on the red alert for fraud have included some with Yahoo. I trust Yahoo and hope yahoo keeps up the good work. I was with MSN but some of the changes they have made recently has left me unhappy with them. I recently received a alert about Yahoo and MSN. I hope Yahoo does not do this! Msn is good but Yahoo is alot better!! Keep up the good work YAHOO!!

I still don’t know about this sign in seal. When they first brought it out, I tried it. Two weeks later my account was “owned”. I’d had the account for 8 years, and it wasn’t the free account. I eventually got my account back, but that’s not really the point is it?

Ryan,
This doesn’t have much to do with today’s post, but I was wondering; do you know when the new calendar and notepad will be available? Thanks. Also, I’ve read a few people’s comments about getting more spam emails lately. I too have been receiving a LOT more in the last couple of weeks. Do you know why? Thanks.
Also, I agree with Mel that I definatley liked the other picture better!

May need to go to Thunderbird if MSN takes over.

I Want To yahoomail
February 4th, 2008 at 7:32 am
What reaaly irks me is that you send my mail to spam and spam to mail.
B-4 I can read my mail, i have to go thru it just like snail mail and sort out what is junk and what is not.
Thaese computers are so smart that they cannot tell the good from the bad any more.
Right now, I have 3 in my inbox and all spam. Then I have to go through my spam bobox of just short of 60 to save any good mail, and wait 20-30 minutes for it to load.

Why haven’t you been able to fix the bookmarks?
They put themselves on and I can’t get rid of them. I was reading comments from other yahoosers and apparently this has been going on for 2 or 3 years. Is it not time for yahoo to do their job and get it right? The instructions to correct it do not work.

“missing or malformed recipient”
when attempting to send email to my distribution list
followed by “Message could not be sent due to a connection problem”
Anyone know what’s going on here? I google for information and yahoo answers has no answers just lots of questions. btw – i ran into a Yahoo! mail team member at thr gym in Cupertino and he didn’t know of this issue.
This is probably not the right forum but I really I don’t know where to go to get this resolved. google the statements above and you’ll see a ton of other people in the same predicament

February 10th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Tried to use sign in seal. Part of another screen appears over sign in screen. It tells me my id and password are invalid, before and after i create sign in seal. these screens cannot be removed. i can’t get to my email and this is important because i am invalid and use this to call for help. please help me get to something i can use as yahoo mail. and, i don’t know how i will know to look somewhere for the answer from you. you really need a better help site that a person can communicate with a rep. directly. my son is going to set google up for me, but that requires notifing everyone about the change. i am very angry over this change. seems everyone is angry about some parts of this change and no way to go back to what worked before. take a look at chat rooms. everyone is going to google.

February 19th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
I created a sign in seal more than a month ago and everything was fine. I didn’t sign in for three weeks and then the seal was gone. I created another early today. I checked back later and it was OK. I just logged on again and the seal is gone.
What’s happening?

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but out of desperation I will check it out! I am a yahoo! user and have been for the past 6 years. In the past few days I have been locked out of my account – my password (which has been the same for the past 3 years!) does not work and when I go to get a new one through the sign in help page, that new password does not work either. It appears to be the same problem as that experienced by supermom above.
I cannot find an enquiries email on the yahoo! webiste or anywhere else where I can turn for help. The yahoo! address was my primary address and I need it for work and study (masters dissertation!). Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?
Thank you and I am sorry if this is not the right forum for this question.
