Reader Polls: Round 2 – More about who you are

polling_liam.jpgAfter the rousing success of the first bit of reader polling, I couldn’t wait come back and find out more about all of you. I couldn’t help but notice that one of the reader comments suggested that Yahoo! should already know which version you use, or other things like browser and operating systems. But since my readership isn’t quite 250 million (at least not yet, anyway) it behooves me to see how all of you compare to the overall Yahoo! Mail user base.

liam_old.jpgHopefully once I have a good grasp on who you are I can get into more product oriented questions … but until then please be patient. And for the record, I am only asking about age because so many reader comments reference “being old”. I think it would be nice to see what qualifies as “old”. Feel free to share your thoughts on how the poll questions could be better, or what you think future poll questions would be!

And if these don’t really work for you, stay tuned because soon I hope to find answers to the age old questions: “Paper or plastic?” and “Tastes great or less filling?”

Could anyone suggest how I can eliminate the .au? from my address? Age should go at least up to 70. You might be surprised at how many people over 70 are on Yahoo.

No at all, because your program didn’t support Russian.

The question, “Do you use Yahoo! on your mobile phone?” Most cellular companys do not allow you to even use Yahoo!. I have sprint, and they do not allow the use of Yahoo!, neither does at&t/cingular, as well as several other services. Is there anything Yahoo! can do to get these companys to allow us to access our Yahoo! acounts?

Hi jpaauwe,
-
Can you elaborate? I’ve been using AT&T/Cingular for years and have been able to access Yahoo! products (in different forms) on every phone I’ve had in the last 6 years (mostly basic phones until very recently).
-
I can check with the mobile team to learn more, but I wanted to get clarification on where you may be from or what phones you may be using.

It’s kind of sad that hours into what appears to be a widescale service interruption of Yahoo! Mail, there isn’t ANYTHING posted about what’s going on or what’s being done anywhere on Yahoo!

I’ve checked the mail blog, the front page, Yahoo! Answers – nothing. There is a HUGE number of questions on Yahoo! Answers about “why isn’t Yahoo! Mail working” – everyone getting error code 1 (old mail) or error code 2 (Oddpost/New mail).

It’s not universal (I have a little used secondary address that works just fine), but it’s pretty widespread and Yahoo! is operating under complete radio silence about it.

Considering I actually pay for Mail Plus, I’m definitely not feelin’ the love today…

Kudos to BrianE for bringing the problem of Yahoo Mail not working to the forefront. Spent the better part of one afternoon cussing and trying to work around it–Am also a paying Mail Plus customer and may consider changing back to my ISPs e-mail as my primary due to continuing non-responsiveness to problems with Yahoo Mail–I think paying customers should have access to a toll free number that can be called when problems develop within the system–especially when nothing is ever posted (other than the error messages) and that problems are occuring. Even a timetable as to when these problems are expected to be resolved would be a help. My satisfaction with Yahoo has waned over the years–and maybe a change should be in the offing. And has anyone at Yahoo found a permanent solution yet to the IE7 issue in Vista of not bringing up a mail composition page when an e-mail address is clicked on? (when Yahoo is listed as the default e-mail client) At one point, I thought the problem was solved when a small window used to open above the clicked on e-mail address but now I have found out it doesn’t seem to work all the time. May seem like little things but they are driving this Yahoo Mail Plus user crazy.

I did read that something was being done about spam but I did not think was going to make it worse. I am now getting spam with no To: email address and a lot of mail with a different email than my own. I have mail-abuse@cc.yahoo-inc.com saved in my contacts and hoped that they would talk to me, I have tried so many times over the years to get help but once again they will not respond to me. They send their auto response emails but nothing that remotely deals with the problems I describe. And please could we respond in kind to this post, I have been with Yahoo from the beginning and will not give up but I would like to resolve the problems.

For me, the spam filter has eliminated 700 junk emails a week. My only complaint is that non-spam mail that I subscribe to gets thrown in the bulk folder now and then. It probably doesn’t hurt to forward to 419@419scam.com, or Scams@Fraudwatchinternational, where appropriate.

I’m responding to jack c., who wrote, “I think paying customers should have access to a toll free number that can be called when problems develop within the system.” There is a toll-free phone number for Mail Plus customers to call for help with their Mail account. The phone number is (866) 562-7219. In addition, Yahoo! Mail Plus customers get real-time help online via live chat. I’m posting this comment at 2:00am (CST) and help via live chat is even available at this late hour. Here’s the link to the page where you can connect live with a Yahoo! Customer Care representative: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/forms_index.html

I’ve used the toll-free number and live chat a few times, and the representatives were polite and helpful. The system will only allow you to connect via live chat if you are a paying Mail Plus customer and signed into your Mail Plus account. And when you call the toll-free number the representative that answers will ask for information to confirm that you have a Mail Plus account. So don’t bother calling if you only have a free account. It’s well worth the $19.99 per year for a Mail Plus account. There are no graphical ads and no promotional tag-lines inserted by Yahoo! into messages you send or receive. There’s additional spam prevention tools, including disposable addresses and extra filters, and offline access with POP.

Other than that it’s the best (waiting to be fully compatible with Opera, Safari, and the others).

Yeah I have a suggestion, is it possible to add an auto-spelling correction feature? (ie, underlining the mistakes while one types).

Wow, after reading all the comments above, I guess I don’t have much to complain about as a yahoo Mail Plus user. There are a few things I would like to see improved such as more stationery, especialy for special holidays as well as ALL the regular holidays, like the 4th of July. I guess I don’t get upset over occasional problems as all websites have them. I personally seldom have the error codes appear and it’s usually resolved in a couple of minutes. Yahoo will remain my email program of choice. Great job, Yahoo!!!!!

First let me take the time to Thank Jason K for his response as it appears to be directed to my post. I have been giving serious consideration to paying for Mail Plus but hesitated to do so because of the very upsetting way that email customer service has handled my issues over the years. The couple times I talked with someone on the phone they would hear me talk and then respond with answers that ignore what I had just said. I have a merchant account with Yahoo and the customer service team there is outstanding, I do realize that by paying for email they would step up there interest in helping and that receiving a free service would not provide the same support. That being said when I buy a new car I would first test drive it and if the car did not perform as expected then I would go somewhere else. I am a loyal Yahoo customer and given what Jason K wrote I will probably be paying for mail plus today. Mr. Ryan K it has been said that this blog is monitored and that you or your staff may not be able to respond to all the Posts and I accept that, but I do check this blog out ever day and the issue of spam problems gets side stepped. For many years as a technician I have had to work in the field with customer service issues and also an 800 support line and it has been proven time and again that responding and fixing the least of my customers problems provide the greatest benefit to company sales.

In response to Urbandale..I know Yahoo does a great job overall. It must be difficult to keep up with the vast amount of Spam telling you that you have won 900K in US dollars if you’ll just give them your account number, or how many ways you can have sex with your neighbor. I for one, do not find those nauseating chain forwards cute, interesting, or worth my time, and do not forward the garbage… so I can’t figure why my account generates so much Spam which ends up in my INBOX.

Also, Yahoo blew it with their Blog and pictures.

Just to put that in perspective I get on average 20 mail messages a day. So I have to say that Yahoo really works great , I like the new format and Gmail, Hotmail, and even Charter failed in comparison. Most of the people I communicate with use the BCC and we practice the etiquette of stipping off all the email addresses on the mail we forward. No chains for me. Forwarding this to 10 people will not do anything……

My son just posted here while ago, But I would like to add something too Since he showed me this to where I can let my suggestions be heard!

I would like to say the spam filters are NOT working. I have a yahoo mail account that keeps getting spam, and when I go and block the domain…. I get 25 more emails. I seriously dont think that the spam filters work on Yahoo. I am starting to be afraid I am going to have to change my address if I cant find a solution. as I said I blocked the domains but im using 167 of 500 blocked addresses.. I dont know what I am going to do once my BLOCK LIST gets full!

Please fix the spam filter to where we can either put it ONLY ACCEPT MAIL FROM ADDRESS BOOK CONTACTS or make a safe list or something I dont want to change my address but my spam is getting to be out of control!

Thank you,
Debbie

Hi. Don’t forget, everyone, if you are not receiving emails that you want to receive, make sure you have the addresses in your mail boxes and make sure they haven’t accidentally gotten in your blocked address folder. I have done this once or twice. Also, there are settings on your computer to prevent you from receiving adult rated or pornographic materials and if you set your ratings to a high enough level, this will also apply to your email. I never receive any kind of “language” or “picture” related offensive material in my email, so I never have that kind of spam or pop ups to deal with. Set your pop up blocker as well to a high setting. Some of the spam that comes with no address has to be opened to find an address to block it, but beware of that because you could be opening a worm or a virus, so I don’t recommend doing that unless you have good spam and spyware protection.

The only real problem I have is that some of my regular bulk mailings that I subscribe to will be every so often be dumped in the bulk folder. I have to scan that folder before I delete everything. These groups are set up in my address book so they should come thru. YAHOO has been great and I will continue to use it. Oh and though I’m not quite to the 61 age mark, I would not want to be grouped as 61 or above!!!! If I was 61 I wouldn’t want to be grouped with the 90 and above people and if I was 90 or above I wouldn’t want to be grouped with the 60 year olds. Hi everyone,
-
I’ll try and address of few of these.
-
I was only going for “silly” with the Liam + walker image. I see a lot of comments about “these old eyes” so I was curious if these people were really that “old”. Many of my friends are in their 30s, but you wouldn’t believe how often I hear them complain about “being so old”.
-
I’m not sure this is the appropriate place for religious debate, but as long as no-one is insulting anyone I think we can roll with it.
-
Sorry to the folks who feel the age choices weren’t specific enough. I didn’t want to overdo the amount of options, and planned that if there were large numbers for the “61 and over” choice I was hoping to offer a more detailed choice later.
-
I hear you all on the spam debate, and I’ll circle up with Mark (the spam csar from a post about 3 weeks ago) and see what news I can share. Please keep in mind that it is a VERY complex challenge because the degree that you share your email address is a personal choice that varies greatly from user to user. How often and where you share it can influence the amount and types of spam you might get. Anyway, this isn’t supposed to be a sob story for the spam fighting team, so I’ll go tackle Mark and get some news.

Future poll questions could be:

How good a job do you think Yahoo is doing at spam filtering? (1) Great, (2) OK, (3) Neutral, (4) Not so good, or (5) Lousy.

How easy is it for you to deal with being able to define a maximum 50 mail filters? (1) 50 is more than I’ll ever need, (2) It’s acceptable, (3) I can barely manage, (4) It’s way too few, or (5) It makes me want to cry.

I agree, Fidel. Excellent sentiment. I just bought a computer for my 82 yr old mother and set her up with a yahoo e-mail address. I wish I had done it years ago.

I wish there were more fonts and more stationary choices. That is why I pay $20/yr for MailPlus. I must also benefit from the Spam filter as I nearly never receive spam. Also, no advertisements on my e-mails, I like that.

I do not participate in forwarding chain e-mails and if I do forward an item, I delete the trail of addresses.

I would love to see poll questions having to do with how we use Yahoo mail. For instance, how many more free mail filters would we use? Do we want more blocked address capability? Which features do we actually use? Or how often do we use them? How much time do we take choosing the wardrobe for our avatar? (Okay, that was a confession of my guilty pleasure.)

And in the vein of “paper or plastic,” how about “boxers or briefs” for the male crowd? Just kidding!!!

This really isn’t the appropriate post to share this concern, but what can be done about having mail misdirected from a closed account into my account? I once opened what I thought was a legitimate email and found that it wasn’t even addressed to me. I’ve been wondering why I get so much spam when I’m really picky about sharing the address (not posting it online, not sharing it with people who like to expose my email by forwarding ridiculous emails, not sharing it with companies that would sell it, not joining groups, keeping my security software up-to-date, not opening weird emails, not verifying my email address by responding to weird emails, etc.) and I think a lot of it is stuff that’s getting directed to my box from a similar but closed account. Can anything be done about this?

Also, I think if you use a series of initials and numbers in your email address (rst123, for example), you are more likely to get more spam because these are addresses that are automatically generated by the spammers and they use the hit-or-miss approach. Can anything be done about this?

You asked what questions we’d like to see in your polls and instead you are being peppered with questions! Actually, maybe you can just forward my questions to the Spam Czar. And for his efforts, I present him with the ‘Spammy,’ a gold-plated Spam can.

Have a nice day, Ryan!

I hope that if MSN & Yahoo do merger that maybe the MSN management will take the Yahoo donuts away and the techies will have to work for a paycheck. If they don’t they will be losing a lot of business as I will start eliminating my Yahoo services for OTHER services that do listen to the people that by the donuts.

Age, like the world, is in your mind. My body is 63. I’ve been a Yahoo dual account holder for over seven years, i.e., since You first started those “big” Mb storAGE boxes and was a subscriber before that.
Have liked almost everything you’ve done EXCEPT the elimination of the side-by-side windows from editing one’s Contacts ["All" on one side. The list your were editing on the other.]. Way too much more work now than before. And no one, not even MailPlus ever got back to me!
You weren’t thinking of the easiest way for Your Customers to use their Yahoo.
As someone up above said, we do “pay for your donuts”, etc.

“Love what you do and do what you love” but don’t screw with your Customers.

Peace & Yahoo to you,
brick
P.S. Remember your Roots, too.

Its March 15, 2008, are we still on what subject about old man above 70. Whew! I’ll be 72 this April 24 and I was two months now back to weightlifting for 20 lbs. Not bad for an oldie, but you an owner of a Barbecue Cha Carl at Baybay, Leyte approached one time while singing accompanied with the videoke. She asked how old I am. I said you guess. 49 she replied. Wow! big gain. Imagine 72 minus 49, how much? I am poor in arithmetic but had been a Field Cost Engineer working in Saudi Arabia way back in the 1980s. It was TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT SERVICE INCORPORATED for short TMSI. Now I gain 23 years. Not bad, eh! By the way if still this earth goes on turning around its orbit, I may be graduating AB Journalism at Asian Development Foundation College in Tacloban City, Eastern Visayas sometime May, a summerian they call. Now are we still in the subject for septuagenarian or octogenarian. Well still feeling the age of 15 when I first learned the world is not round but oblong. Hehehe! Enjoy reading pal, old maid or teenager. Bye for now! C U sumtym. Fidel the Banzon.

I agree with Chet M. about Matthew B..He is not only off topic, but taking God out of our schools etc. is part of the problem with kids today!
