Reader Poll: What Mail do you have, and how do you access it?

One of the other Community Managers around here recently turned me on to this great polling plugin that I can use on this blog … so partly because I love to try out new features, but also because I think it would be EXTREMELY helpful to know more about all of you and how you compare to the rest of the approximately 250 million Yahoo! Mail users, I’m kicking things off with three polls today. Feel free to share your thoughts on how the poll questions could be better, or what you think future poll questions would be!

One of the major showstoppers of new Yahoo mail
is support of RTL languages like Hebrew, Arabic
or Parsian. This is the primary reson I use
mail classic + simple plain text editing
because I can switch a text direction
    in Firefox to RTL mode.

    Without decent support of non-english
    speakers, yahoo mail becomes unpopular.

    BTW: I’m Yahoo Plut User

I do not like, and do not appreciate, the arrogant way Yahoo decided to change my account without either asking permission or giving me a way to get what I had back.

I do NOT like autocomplete; it is one of the most annoying apps since multiple popups on one site.

I do NOT want the CC field there all the time; it is something I almost never use, so I had it minimized. WHY change it?

It should not be too hard to implement these changes; after all, I am sure you guys have the code in a backup.

Finally, you guys are screwing around with the golden goose. Yahoo first came to promininence with its e-mail app; this brought in people so you guys could sell ads. Now, with this arrogant and high-handed decision to screw with people’s e-mail, the one app they passionately care about, you are looking to drive users to Gmail, Hotmail, and other, less user-friendly e-mail providers.

All I want is my options back!

Until aboout 23 hours ago i was the contented user of yahoo classic mail, via my classic yahoo page… then who knows what you guys did..
i get your “New improved” page design foisted on me with no way to sign in to my old one, nor can i sign in to my email.
every attempt is only an endless loop, putting me back on the sign in please page, ad nauseum.
when might you fix this? i can access a lot of other servers, in the usa as well as offshore. only yours does not work. you can reach me at
    findme@mexico.com
since i cant’t read yahoo mail any more. nice work

hi yahoo mamber how are you

  5. I want to retrieve my old email page and it want come up why?

  6. Michael says:

A pet peeve of mine is that I often get messages days after they were sent, and sometimes not at all. I have daily subscriptions to certain emails and miss a day here and there, only to sometimes find them showing up anywhere from a few hours later than normal to a few days later (i.e., on Thursday afternoon Monday morning’s email will appear for the first time in my Inbox). Does this happen to anyone else with Yahoo email?

Also, I wish the new Yahoo mail would have an option to view only the unread emails and to load the email list quicker when scrolling through a folder.

  7. Nose says:

I like how the new mail is still buggy after all these years (slow, “appears to be taking longer than usual to load”) Feature deficient. And a real nifty feature is how my sent items, which usually have the recipients address noted, ALL SWITCH TO “MY NAME” when I move them to my archive folder for safe keeping – useless !

  8. I’ve been using PC’s since 1985. I am 73 years young and use my PC more now than ever. I don’t understand why so many Yahoo users seem to be so beholden to Yahoo. If you make requests directed to Yahoo, why be so condecending? I’ve been unable to access my email for 5 days now probably because I’m not able to get access to their response(s) that are in my inbox. I have no choice but to format my hard drive and restore all with my backup.

  9. i love the old classic but i don,t know how to get it back would please help thanks ward winkelbauer.

    Ryan K,

I’m a bit late adding my comments but seem to have a somewhat different use for Yahoo Mail. We use Mail Plus of necessity but the cost is minimal relative to what we get.

We are a retired couple in our late 60s and travel quite a bit, usually together but not always. We use 2 laptops – no desktop base station. By necessity our ISP is Earthlink because of their superior dial-up network. They also provide broadband at home. I have maintained the Yahoo account for a number of years.

The Yahoo mail account is used as a consolidated mailbox for both our individual Earthlink accounts and the Yahoo account. Our need is for each of us to be able to access all the mail, incoming and outgoing, in a single mailbox from any internet-capable device and Mail Plus allows us to do this although there were some growing pains for the cell phone. I’ve got some suggestions on this last item but they’re for a later time other than a request that the “Check Other Mail” feature be maintained (I had some interesting times chasing that link around the site last summer and some inconvenience when I couldn’t find it for a week). Mail Plus is my preferred link as any service that pushes data to the phone creates roaming charges for items I don’t need while I’m out of the country. On those occasions I usually leave the laptop at home and use the cell phone because overall coverage is much better than the combination of wi-fi and internet cafes. Ditto for coastal sailing to remote areas. The cell phone provider is AT&T whose GSM network lets me use my normal phone almost worldwide.

I compliment you on your reliable service. We use New Mail except for times such as the recent refusal of New Mail to send messages to a list, when at the suggestion of one of your reps we switched back to Classic long enough to get them out. The backup is a nice feature.

Ok, no chuckles… I really started using YAHOO two weeks ago. Dial up was too slow to be effective. Now with satellite It’s zipppo.
Yahoo lets me delve and dig and get lost in good sites.. This is an amazing thing…I never new it could be so good! Three cheers, Yahoo. Mail is best for me from Gmail…

  12. Caleb says:

Wow…people complain way too much about stupid little things.

  13. Kevin says:

I like the features of the new Mail, but it’s slower than certain competitor offerings with similar features in webMail solutions.

Now, I’ll tell you why I’m likely going to be using Yahoo! Mail less and less, after using it extensively now for 10+ years, and probably will eventually quit it entirely.

RSS/Widgets… I can plug widgets/RSS feeds, of one of your competitors solution, for multiple email addresses, calendars, etc. into a certain web-based RSS reader/home page/portal, for no additional charge. So… why should I pay for Mail Plus! just for POP3 access, for little added benefit otherwise, when there are offerings like this out there for free? MailPlus! comes with less SPAM? That should not be a feature a consumer need pay for. That is like paying a premium to your doctor for less disease.

Overall, I think Yahoo! is falling a bit behind the times, which makes me very sad indeed.

Sorry for being a bit blunt, but I’ve been reticent about switching after being a loyal Yahoo! Mail user for so long. But as the entire web community is moving forward, Yahoo! Mail is just becoming less and less relevant, efficient and productive for me.

  14. Herb Marlow says:

I use Classic. Tried the new but didn’t like it. I do have a complaint – when I can get my mail (it’s been down now for over thirty minutes) it is slow to both receive and send. I’ve been a Yahoo user for 12 years, and I don’t want to change, but how about speeding things up?

  15. Slax says:

    Can someone help please?

When I am sent attachments/photos I have to click on each one individually and go to ‘Download Attachment’ and have to look at one picture at a time.

How can I set up my account so that if someone sends me a number of pictures I can see them in the text or click download once so that I can see all pictures straight away?

I am going insane trying to do this!!!!

  16. evelyn coyle says:

I AM HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE WITH THE NEW EMAIL. I CANNOT DELETE ANYTHING I WOULD RATHER HAVE MY CLASSIC EMAIL WHERE I CAN GO DIRECTLY TO MY MAIL AND DELETE IT AS IT COMES IN . WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE ADDING NEW THINGS WHEN ALL I WANT IS CLASSIC MAIL. IF THIS CANT BE STRAIGHTENED OUT MAY HAVE TO GO BACK TO ROAD RUNNER. I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH YAHOO UNTIL ALL THESE CHANGES CAME ABOUT.

  17. LT says:

Now that there is unlimited storage and integrated chat features, I wish chat conversations would be automatically saved in a folder…kinda like gmail.

No idea what IMAP is. Am I missing out?

  18. WJ says:

What is the deal with the rest of yahoo mail?
I see that only the main parts where upgraded but you guys left out the “Notepad” “Calendar” (Not the one on the bottom, but the main calendar).

When are these going to be upgraded?
Oh and another vote for IMAP.

  19. jeffery darr says:

hi keep up the good work jeff

  20. dg says:

I don’t like the new mail at all, but I am really happy that I still have the option to use the Classic. Please keep it that way!

  21. sapper says:

I reduced my use of my Yahoo account when you removed POP3 access. I now use hotmail (where I still have POP3) and gmail – which also has POP3.

I like to read and store messages on my own computer, so POP3 is key to me.

    Firefox on Linux

  23. Tim says:

I am in agreement with Judy (comment above). While the newer version is sexier, in my opinion, the older verdion is just as, if not more, functional than the new one. I have no motivation to switch.

  24. wiseacre says:

Windows 98 and Mac – it’s OK But what about Debian and Iceweasel?

  25. Judy says:

    Ryan,

I’m an older user too. I tried new mail. It’s sleeker and prettier, which I liked. But, I had functionality problems. I ended up switching back. Too many kinks. I like to get in and get out quickly.
