Reader Poll: What Mail do you have, and how do you access it?
- Posted January 18th, 2008 at 9:54 am by Ryan
- Categories: General, Reader Polls
One of the other Community Managers around here recently turned me on to this great polling plugin that I can use on this blog … so partly because I love to try out new features, but also because I think it would be EXTREMELY helpful to know more about all of you and how you compare to the rest of the approximately 250 million Yahoo! Mail users, I’m kicking things off with three polls today. Feel free to share your thoughts on how the poll questions could be better, or what you think future poll questions would be!

Two general comments:
At first think about Linux
And second: It doesn’t matter if i use Firefox on Windows, Mac, Linux, eComstation, FreeBsd and so on as Firefox provides its own plattform. So if you support the Mozilla-base the underlying OS should not be so interesting to ask…
The same for Opera on Win/Mac/Linux…

You’re missing POP3 for your Plus members.
January 18th, 2008 at 10:18 am
well and just to add another issue:
yahoo does exactly know which browsers are used… so maybe do not ask the users to answer this question but provide us users “browser-usage-statistics” from you own logfiles…
I mean this should be interesting to know :-)
January 18th, 2008 at 10:19 am
You’re missing POP3 for your Plus members.
Kinda wish I could use IMAP (hint hint).

Dear Yahoo
I am an older generation user and I like the
old simple yahoo. software that I started off
with many years ago. The way the new yahoo
software is now I can not access my mail and
send e-mails out at this time. This has been
going on for days now. Am having a very
difficult time with this new e-mail
software and I have talked w/other co-workers
that have yahoo as their provider and they cannot
access their e-mails either. Help Help Please
January 18th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Yes, I agree – IMAP please!!!!!!! Google has it, so why don’t you? Give it to us, please, at least for the Plus users.
January 18th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Hi, and yes, another vote for IMAP please! It’s the one killer feature whose absence dissappoints.
Been here for 8 years, I can’t live or work without Y! Mail, but the lack of IMAP (even on my plus) account is my biggest and only gripe.
Here’s crossed fingers to a 6th way to access my account in 2008 :)
January 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
I generally like the New Mail, but miss being able to color code the mail by the account to which it has been sent.
January 18th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Someone doesn’t know how to make a poll.
January 18th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071128 SUSE/2.0.0.11-3.1 Firefox/2.0.0.11
Firefox has a Linux version as well…
January 18th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
hello all
January 18th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
I much prefer the Classic Mail, probably because I’m used to how to do what I need to with it….so how come I had to expressly tell the app SO MANY TIMES that I wish to use the Classic version? Once should be enough, don’t you think?
January 18th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Mail Plus users should definitely have access to IMAP. Sometimes I wonder what value I’m receiving with Mail Plus other than the elimination of the ads.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Chalk up another Linux user (Ubuntu in particular). I agree that it would be interesting to see what your server farms logs have to say about the platforms used to access Y! Mail.
Keep up the good work and please do not disregard the open platforms in the future.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
I clicked the VOTE button in my Yahoo Mail RSS reader. It crashed FireFox. Great. And I was about to vote that I prefer FireFox. Hmm.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

January 18th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Hey ryan K i like what u been doing this past week asking y-mail user for their own answer on diffrent keep it coming i really like this polling thing i would like a new color scheme default black color for new yahoo mail classic and all-new-mail (drag and drop ) and imap maybe for free yahoo mail user like g-mail and plus mail and your next poll maybe should ask user how could yahoo mail improve spam better what are we missing hey new pick nice backgorund need to be lighter
January 18th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Hi
The new email would be great if the font wasn’t so tiny. What good is the new mail page if anyone over 40 can;t see it well enough to read?
Come on Yahoo …. help us out here.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I prefer Classic, new one didn’t work on my snail slow isp.
You keep telling me you’ve fixed my incoming mail count on the Yahoo toolbar and the home page. No No No. If it says I have 5 new mail on the toolbar, may say 9 new mail on the home page, when I go into my account, I may have zero and up, but seldom what the bar and page tell me I have. Why can’t you fix it??
January 18th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I find the appearance of the new Mail to be appealing, but I find that the performance suffers, particularly if I am using a system with ! GHz or less of processing power and under 512 MB of memory. I have a 2000-2001 vintage desktop, which still works, but not always well with the new metaphors. What I typically do with Yahoo! Mail is scan my Bulk mail, see if anything is worthwhile, then remove the rest. Then I scan my Inbox and do the same. What I want to keep I then grab with a POP server and pull it into Thunderbird. The pruning I do in advance from a browser in Firefox. Frankly, unless I can get 1 second or less response on the Web, I don’t read all my mail there, too time consuming.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Why “(mac)” after Opera? I use it on PC.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I voted that I use “both but prefer Classic” to the New Mail. The new mail is great in so many ways, but too major complaints, one of which has already been commented on, keep me from sticking with the New Mail:
1) The font size. I use Firefox chiefly because I can *increase* the font size on most websites, including New and Classic Mail, in incremental steps. However, the New Yahoo Mail does not render even remotely close to acceptable when the font size is increased by Firefox.
2)There is no “forward as attachment” option in the New Mail. The “forward” command in New Mail defaults to in-line forwards. This is unacceptable for the spam that I daily forward to SpamCop.net. I do not want the attachment to open and execute whatever evil is within simply to forward it to a reporting service.
Please contact me for further information and / or screenshots.

The biggest problem with computers and e-mail
is try to do too much. “Keep It Simple S”
The new e-mail is way to busy, to small on print
and confusing to navigate. Most of us over 50 just want to read and reply without going thru hoops.
January 18th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
How do I access my yahoomail?
With browser like most of the users but it would be nice if we have the options to choose between POP and IMAP not only the browser.
How about that?
Thanks
January 18th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I prefer the classic version because i’m accessing it on both PC (Opera) and Mobile (Opera Mini)
January 18th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I have accounts using both versions, and I much prefer the original version. The new version is slower to access and read. Also too much stuff and the print is too small.
January 18th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I use classic yahoo on an older mac with tiger and firefox. I tried the new mail but it was slow compared to classic. If there was one thing I found the most annoying, that would be:
When I am on the yahoo main page and try to click on an email message in the mail preview, it would take me to the main mail menu. Then I would have to click on that message again to read it. My internet is slow, so it would take a few minutes to see that message.
Thanks for letting us users give some feedback.
January 18th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
LINUX FOR GODS SAKE!!!!! I’m appalled you forgot to list Linux as a selection, and yet you found it necessary to subdivide the Mac-OS releases. What could it hurt to ask about Linux?
January 18th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
I don’t like Yahoo mail at all. All I get is SPAM SPAM SPAM. I don’t have that problem with a different e-mail. I have asked Yahoo how to make those e-mails to automatically go into the span box but the 100 page answer they sent me was useless.
January 18th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
I use XP one one computer and Vista on another — your survey forced me to use one only.
By the way, doesn’t Yahoo mail “know” which browser it is talking to – in which case you ought to be able to find out more accurately without a survey.
I’m doubtful in any case about surveying via a blog. basically you get the opinions of blog readers and they are probably not “typical” yahoo mail users. It’s interesting nonetheless, I guess
January 18th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
And Linux?
January 18th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
The writting is to small so we all
will stay with mail classic.thinking of leaveing
yahoo what good is it if you can’t read it.
we think you talk alot and can’t lissen to us.

January 18th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
I mostly use Classic (I read there was an updated Classic, but I don’t have it)- I like the new vers OK but it’s slow(er) and man those huge ads on the right bother me.
January 18th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Great indeed your “ERUKA” on yahoo mail. When can we get Bulk mail for SPAM’G.
Thanks for this help full survey and arrangement to view our votes it is excellent.
January 18th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
I use Yahoo Mail Plus so I am able to use POP3 to access it.
GMAIL offers POP3 mail without a fee…and has a larger capacity than yahoo…and again, it is free. Hint…why can’t yahoo do the same?
January 18th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
I’d like to use the new Y! Mail on Firefox 3, but it’s just not compatible. I sure hope that this is fixed by the end of the beta test.
January 18th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I use Y! Mail Plus from Linux, Windows, and my mobile.
I love the new interface. Now, give us IMAP please!!!
January 19th, 2008 at 2:37 am
Opera (Windows) ??
I guess most of the Other category votes go to this.
January 19th, 2008 at 4:10 am
Yep, I’ve been a Plus user for two years now. Where’s the IMAP for my money?
January 19th, 2008 at 5:49 am
Thinking it would be extremely helpful to know more about ALL of us and how we compare to the rest of the approximately 250 million Yahoo! Mail users, why don’t you OPEN your poll questions more?
To the first question: Neither, the new AOL Mail instead.
To the second question: openSUSE 10.2.
To the third question: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.10) Gecko/20071015 SUSE/2.0.0.10-0.1 Firefox/2.0.0.10.
January 19th, 2008 at 6:06 am
I have gone back and forth between the All-New and the Classic Mail. And I keep coming back to the Classic. It is easier to use and I can do some things there that I can’t on the new.
January 19th, 2008 at 6:06 am
There were no platforms, browsers, etc. forgotten. If it’s not named specifically, then it falls into the catagory of “other”. Noting the relatively small percentage of “other” votes, it appears that people are overly sensitive about not seeing a particular choice listed.
I am a Classic user. I have tried the new version twice, and both times I switched back after encountering problems with message viewing (both in the folder listing, and in navigating from message to message).
One more thing…
More polls please. Thanks!
January 19th, 2008 at 6:48 am
I use classic because I live in the country and am stuck with really slow connection speed dial up.
January 19th, 2008 at 7:05 am
i need to get all data and all news in my e-mail
January 19th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Yahoo Classic / Mail Plus with POP access. It offers everything I need — no more, no less. I hope this service remains as it is and that those developers with an incessant need to tinker will leave this one alone.
January 19th, 2008 at 8:30 am
you guys came up with the all new yahoo mail.I tried my best using it.It just wont load always either I face screen resolution issues at cyber cafes or the time taken for loading mails is very long.So I stuck to my classic version though its nothing compared to gmail I am putting up with it as I have been a yahoo user for quite some time and I love myYahoo!!!! Its awsome and congrats to that team.Yahoo mail new it has a long way to go towards optimization.
January 19th, 2008 at 9:27 am
I like the new mail, but I have to switch back and forth because Classic does a better job on the “check other mail” function. It gives you a message like “There was no new mail on the server” or “Downloaded two messages from whatever@othermail.com“. I miss that.
And I also miss the color-coding. Please, please bring that over to the new.
One other issue: The soft wrap and the enter key in the New Mail codes to a break (br) with lt and gt keys of course, instead of a standard paragraph break. That is REALLY annoying when you copy and paste some text from your email, and it plays havoc with some recipients’ reply function. If you have a suggestion or a fix for that, I’d appreciate it.
January 19th, 2008 at 11:01 am
The ‘all-new’ email works great in linux using firefox. I believe even opera works with the all-new email, even though it is not listed as one of the suggested browsers.
January 19th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
classic plz
January 19th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Sounds to me like Classic wins, maybe Plus would if yahoo listens to the complaints made by Plus users!
January 19th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I thought Yahoo did have IMAP. I access my mail mostly from my Windows Mobile 6 Pocket PC and the built in mail client configured Yahoo as IMAP and it works.
January 19th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
I need the Classic type to effectively read and get all of my emails. I know that for at least a week, I have not been able to get all of my emails. Please make it possible that I may be able to return to the regular classic set and
be able to check as well as read all of my emails.

I use the new yahoo mail and like it very much. I’d like it even better if it were compatible with Firefox 3.
January 19th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
I have classic I think. (can’t verify). I have been notified that an e-mail was sent to my alternative e-mail account with code, so I can verify my other e-mail address. Where is it? Once I log out of yahoo and then want back in – it says my user name or password is incorrect. This is saved by Firefox so it can’t be wrong and I have only one alternative e-mail site to send the code to. Also why is my user name always wrong? You’re too cumbersome and glitch-filled to deal with anymore. BTW, this is the second time I have tried Yahoo! Never again!!!!!!!! Sandune

Just finished trying the new Yahoo web page… hate it! Not as friendly as the old style with little option to set up the page like the old mail/webpage. Sorry, maybe when it is finshed and out of beta format, it will be worth looking at again.
January 19th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
I tried out the new Yahoo WebMail, and after just a day or two switched back to the Classic. I don’t actually remember why, but it was something like, in Classic it takes two clicks to reach the Inbox, and in the new version, it was just too complex to bother with. That, and I don’t think there were any new features I actually thought useful.
January 20th, 2008 at 6:02 am
i have been using classic and its been quiet good
to me i love

Don’t like the new email system and much prefer the older one. Why did you change without contacting us?
January 20th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Firstly, why does Yahoo need to ask what OS & browser we have? Why not just look at what everyone uses when they log into their site.
Why is the new version so slow to load up?
And don’t forget, you can use Adblock Plus to get rid of ALL the annoying ads you use when browsing (Firefox only, natch).
January 20th, 2008 at 9:15 am
I just want to say it really dont matter to me. But yahoo classic is easyer to oporate for the people that are unsure on oporating a computer!!!
January 20th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I really prefer the Classic to the new system, and i the same way, I prefer IE 6.0 to the new Tab system. Keep It Simple S !!
January 20th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
all new mail is great , i enjoy drag & drop ,
makes things easy to move around & find.
it’s simple & easy to use !
i was able to increase the whole picture , font size too.
am i the only one that read through the tutorials
, they sure were a lot of help !!
every thing is handy , all on one page.
keep up the good work !
i’m waiting for the next update / changes !!!
i enjoy exploring things with yahoo.
yahoo is the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 20th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I. E. 7, is better than 6
the yahoo tool bar keeps things simple,
one click access is great too.
January 20th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
If all the major browsers are standards compliant, from the point of view of appearance should be the same and, in general, behave the same. The difference between the browsers are all bells and whistles now, aren’t they?
January 20th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
POP3 is not missing for Plus members!!! I have had POP access since about oh….. 2004… You want POP access you gotta pay!!!
January 20th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
the new mail is great for people like me who just want to plink around sending emails to friends and to co-workers. it’s like a outlook/Thunderbird like program but in a browser. awesome.
great work Yahoo! Mail, although i wish the new mail worked properly in safari.
January 20th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
I love the new mail, but I hooked up a webcam to see my Grandchildren who live in Tenn. but can’t get it to work. The cam workes as far as showing my pic but can’t get it to show me them.
January 20th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Linux is excluded… nice…
it looks like we have more Linux than Win98 users.
I’m running SeaMonkey (former Mozilla Suite) on Linux, FWIW.
January 20th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
I went back to Classic for the few Yahoo e-mail messages i still use.
Number of clicks to go to a message is less
Message loads faster
Much less junk website
Font size is more reasonable
Learn from GMail. Functional is beautiful.
January 20th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
I love the new yahoo mail over the classic. I also love Mozilla Firefox over IE due in part to the AD Blocker plug-in and the Themes.
January 20th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Ever since I started using the new My yahoo, my computer will not allow me access unless I go through my E mail first and even then it will still kick me out. If I move fast enough on it I can get through being kicked off . Why is it doing that? And , also my computer will just act like its tired and shut down on me, Why? Karen R

I am a creature of habit and like my classic yahoo mail and mypage. I did look at the new versions of both but the font is too small on the new yahoo and the new mypage doesn’t look right on the older computer monitors. I don’t like change and will stick with my classic versions of Yahoo

For the older person you really screwed the opening page and mail up !! onot use Yahoo for the opening page. Mail box address is only given
when I purchase something for their reply, which is not very often. By all the comments written
I would think you people would switch it back.
This is going to like AOL are really looser of customers base
January 21st, 2008 at 9:13 am
Tried the new mail but switched back to classic because 1) the font was too small to read easily — and I’m NOT over 40 — 2) it took too long for the page to load because of all the RSS feeds and 3) the page had to fully load before I could see if I had any mail and half the time it told me it couldn’t access that feed so I’d have to check back later. With classic, one of the first icons that appears is the mail icon which quickly allows you to see whether you have any new mail or not. Overall, I’ve been happy with Yahoo Mail. Because classic is not a live feed, I have to hit refresh on the browser, but I can live with that!
January 21st, 2008 at 9:24 am
While I like the appearance and features of the new email, I cannot get it to work properly on my computer at home. Work computer isn’t a problem however. I’ve tried all of the suggestions by Yahoo! and Microsoft, all to no available. Anytime I try to load the new version, it says “Error on page” and the details state “YAHOO is not defined”. I would love to be able to use the new version, however unless someone knows how to fix this error, it looks like I am stuck with the classic.
January 21st, 2008 at 11:49 am
Why are you asking what your customers want? Does Steve Jobs ask what the customers want? No, he leads. Screw what us customers want. Make Y! the innovative leader. Surprise and challenge us to use email in new ways. Yahoo should not be my father’s email.
January 21st, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Its amazing how much negativity there is out there. All Ryan K was doing, as he said was putting something up to “…know more about all of you…”. Most people complain that big companies are not personal enough.
He was also wanting us to comment on the poll itself… Instead people who obviously cant read use it to either put the service down (simple, find another mail provider) or to seek help with technical problems?
This isn’t a forum, its a “comments” section and in particular on how Ryan can improve the poll.
That last comment by “Randy” wow, ouch!
January 22nd, 2008 at 1:15 am
i don’t know if anyone has mentioned this before but i think it would be nice to have Message sending Priorities set up and also read receipts. don’t think delivery receipts are necessary but sometimes it is nice to see them. i realize Pop3 is not a MAPI client but this new Yahoo! is the best thing around. i have had Yahoo! mail for the better part of 10 years and believe it is light years ahead of anyone. personally i have the MailPlus because i like the ability to download to the Outlook client. thank you for your time. shiv

I run over 25 of the Linux distros, several of the 31 BSDs, and Macs with OS7.5 (iCab browser), through OS10.4 plus service a couple Windoze lusers (Firefox, NVU, Opera, T-bird, Seamonkey).
The Yahoo policy of ignoring the existance of BSD, while rejecting Linux users, as in the Answers forums, where they get deleted for mentioning FOSS, or using the word Linux, is killing off the enthusiasm many had for Yahoo.
So sorry you are in bed with the million Microsoft virus/bots/Worms/Trojans/exploits. The rest of the 810 OSes out there are immune to them, and the
computers actually run much faster on the FREE OSes (as Yahoo knows, running ALL it’s servers on FreeBSD!)! Duh!
The platforms are really not pertinent to the subject of browsing, as there are so many of each now freely available!
January 22nd, 2008 at 7:58 am
All I need is a “DOWNLOAD ALL” button!! I’m a designer and I frequently receive emails with 4-6 photos attached. I have to individually select each one, wait while its scanned, select a destination folder and then click save for each photo! Why??!! “DOWNLOAD ALL” button please!!!
January 22nd, 2008 at 8:04 am
Kiwi,
It’s obvious users are frustrated that there is no Mail forum or any other way to provide feedback or suggestions. So they are using the only place avalable to them to provide much-needed criticism to the powers that be at Yahoo mail.
January 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 am
IMAP. Google and others have IMAP, it’s easy to configure. I’d spring for Plus…well maybe, because I have several Yahoo accounts, and frankly these days I think Y! ought to drop Plus because others offer the same services w/o charge. (Look at MSN, taking more services away from their Plus level and putting them in at the free level.)
Other issues – New mail on Opera for Windows does not work. Too many Javascript errors. And Safari for Windows has issues – in fact, I can’t sign into either version of Y! Mail from Safari.
January 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 am
Hi everyone,

I’m still getting through all of the comments, but thanks so much for all of the feedback. Just a few things that I need to address first:
-
* Not sure why I spaced on the Opera OSs supported. I knew it was for more than Mac but I messed up.
* I really had no idea that we would have so many Linux readers, but I’m glad that I know now :)
* Many of you would prefer to access Mail through a POP or IMAP option.
-
Thanks again for the feedback. I’ll try to address more of the comments later.

Another vote for IMAP. Also, the Go! app for BB’s could use some work.

Ryan,
I’m an older user too. I tried new mail. It’s sleeker and prettier, which I liked. But, I had functionality problems. I ended up switching back. Too many kinks. I like to get in and get out quickly.

Windows 98 and Mac – it’s OK But what about Debian and Iceweasel?

I am in agreement with Judy (comment above). While the newer version is sexier, in my opinion, the older verdion is just as, if not more, functional than the new one. I have no motivation to switch.

I reduced my use of my Yahoo account when you removed POP3 access. I now use hotmail (where I still have POP3) and gmail – which also has POP3.
I like to read and store messages on my own computer, so POP3 is key to me.

I don’t like the new mail at all, but I am really happy that I still have the option to use the Classic. Please keep it that way!

What is the deal with the rest of yahoo mail?
I see that only the main parts where upgraded but you guys left out the “Notepad” “Calendar” (Not the one on the bottom, but the main calendar).
When are these going to be upgraded?
Oh and another vote for IMAP.

Now that there is unlimited storage and integrated chat features, I wish chat conversations would be automatically saved in a folder…kinda like gmail.
No idea what IMAP is. Am I missing out?

I AM HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE WITH THE NEW EMAIL. I CANNOT DELETE ANYTHING I WOULD RATHER HAVE MY CLASSIC EMAIL WHERE I CAN GO DIRECTLY TO MY MAIL AND DELETE IT AS IT COMES IN . WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE ADDING NEW THINGS WHEN ALL I WANT IS CLASSIC MAIL. IF THIS CANT BE STRAIGHTENED OUT MAY HAVE TO GO BACK TO ROAD RUNNER. I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH YAHOO UNTIL ALL THESE CHANGES CAME ABOUT.

Can someone help please?
When I am sent attachments/photos I have to click on each one individually and go to ‘Download Attachment’ and have to look at one picture at a time.
How can I set up my account so that if someone sends me a number of pictures I can see them in the text or click download once so that I can see all pictures straight away?
I am going insane trying to do this!!!!

I use Classic. Tried the new but didn’t like it. I do have a complaint – when I can get my mail (it’s been down now for over thirty minutes) it is slow to both receive and send. I’ve been a Yahoo user for 12 years, and I don’t want to change, but how about speeding things up?
January 29th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
I like the features of the new Mail, but it’s slower than certain competitor offerings with similar features in webMail solutions.
Now, I’ll tell you why I’m likely going to be using Yahoo! Mail less and less, after using it extensively now for 10+ years, and probably will eventually quit it entirely.
RSS/Widgets… I can plug widgets/RSS feeds, of one of your competitors solution, for multiple email addresses, calendars, etc. into a certain web-based RSS reader/home page/portal, for no additional charge. So… why should I pay for Mail Plus! just for POP3 access, for little added benefit otherwise, when there are offerings like this out there for free? MailPlus! comes with less SPAM? That should not be a feature a consumer need pay for. That is like paying a premium to your doctor for less disease.
Overall, I think Yahoo! is falling a bit behind the times, which makes me very sad indeed.
Sorry for being a bit blunt, but I’ve been reticent about switching after being a loyal Yahoo! Mail user for so long. But as the entire web community is moving forward, Yahoo! Mail is just becoming less and less relevant, efficient and productive for me.

Wow…people complain way too much about stupid little things.

Ok, no chuckles… I really started using YAHOO two weeks ago. Dial up was too slow to be effective. Now with satellite It’s zipppo.
Yahoo lets me delve and dig and get lost in good sites.. This is an amazing thing…I never new it could be so good! Three cheers, Yahoo. Mail is best for me from Gmail…

Ryan K,
I’m a bit late adding my comments but seem to have a somewhat different use for Yahoo Mail. We use Mail Plus of necessity but the cost is minimal relative to what we get.
We are a retired couple in our late 60s and travel quite a bit, usually together but not always. We use 2 laptops – no desktop base station. By necessity our ISP is Earthlink because of their superior dial-up network. They also provide broadband at home. I have maintained the Yahoo account for a number of years.
The Yahoo mail account is used as a consolidated mailbox for both our individual Earthlink accounts and the Yahoo account. Our need is for each of us to be able to access all the mail, incoming and outgoing, in a single mailbox from any internet-capable device and Mail Plus allows us to do this although there were some growing pains for the cell phone. I’ve got some suggestions on this last item but they’re for a later time other than a request that the “Check Other Mail” feature be maintained (I had some interesting times chasing that link around the site last summer and some inconvenience when I couldn’t find it for a week). Mail Plus is my preferred link as any service that pushes data to the phone creates roaming charges for items I don’t need while I’m out of the country. On those occasions I usually leave the laptop at home and use the cell phone because overall coverage is much better than the combination of wi-fi and internet cafes. Ditto for coastal sailing to remote areas. The cell phone provider is AT&T whose GSM network lets me use my normal phone almost worldwide.
I compliment you on your reliable service. We use New Mail except for times such as the recent refusal of New Mail to send messages to a list, when at the suggestion of one of your reps we switched back to Classic long enough to get them out. The backup is a nice feature.

I’ve been using PC’s since 1985. I am 73 years young and use my PC more now than ever. I don’t understand why so many Yahoo users seem to be so beholden to Yahoo. If you make requests directed to Yahoo, why be so condecending? I’ve been unable to access my email for 5 days now probably because I’m not able to get access to their response(s) that are in my inbox. I have no choice but to format my hard drive and restore all with my backup.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
I like how the new mail is still buggy after all these years (slow, “appears to be taking longer than usual to load”) Feature deficient. And a real nifty feature is how my sent items, which usually have the recipients address noted, ALL SWITCH TO “MY NAME” when I move them to my archive folder for safe keeping – useless !
February 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
A pet peeve of mine is that I often get messages days after they were sent, and sometimes not at all. I have daily subscriptions to certain emails and miss a day here and there, only to sometimes find them showing up anywhere from a few hours later than normal to a few days later (i.e., on Thursday afternoon Monday morning’s email will appear for the first time in my Inbox). Does this happen to anyone else with Yahoo email?
Also, I wish the new Yahoo mail would have an option to view only the unread emails and to load the email list quicker when scrolling through a folder.

i get your “New improved” page design foisted on me with no way to sign in to my old one, nor can i sign in to my email.
every attempt is only an endless loop, putting me back on the sign in please page, ad nauseum.
when might you fix this? i can access a lot of other servers, in the usa as well as offshore. only yours does not work. you can reach me at
findme@mexico.com
since i cant’t read yahoo mail any more. nice work

I do not like, and do not appreciate, the arrogant way Yahoo decided to change my account without either asking permission or giving me a way to get what I had back.
I do NOT like autocomplete; it is one of the most annoying apps since multiple popups on one site.
I do NOT want the CC field there all the time; it is something I almost never use, so I had it minimized. WHY change it?
It should not be too hard to implement these changes; after all, I am sure you guys have the code in a backup.
Finally, you guys are screwing around with the golden goose. Yahoo first came to promininence with its e-mail app; this brought in people so you guys could sell ads. Now, with this arrogant and high-handed decision to screw with people’s e-mail, the one app they passionately care about, you are looking to drive users to Gmail, Hotmail, and other, less user-friendly e-mail providers.
All I want is my options back!

One of the major showstoppers of new Yahoo mail
is support of RTL languages like Hebrew, Arabic
or Parsian. This is the primary reson I use
mail classic + simple plain text editing
because I can switch a text direction
in Firefox to RTL mode.
Without decent support of non-english
speakers, yahoo mail becomes unpopular.
BTW: I’m Yahoo Plut User
