Update on the Classic Mail Update

About a month ago I posted about the streamlining and updating of Yahoo! Mail Classic. As of this posting only a handful of you Classic users may have been transitioned over to the updated version (you can tell by reviewing some of the details in this post), with everyone else waiting for the rollouts to continue.
As many of you may remember from my chat with Skotch during the rollout of the All-New Yahoo! Mail, when it comes to rolling out something of this magnitude we prefer the careful approach. The rollout is gradual and is very closely monitored during each step.
We know that many of you are using Yahoo! Mail this winter to coordinate those all-important holiday plans with family and friends (whether Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Soyal, Winter Solstice, Yule, or even Festivus). Many others are using it for your business communications with clients or customers, and may be counting on maximizing that holiday business. Either way this is an absolutely critical time of year for communicating, and, although we know you are excited to experience the updated Mail Classic, the Yahoo! Mail team is mitigating exposure for users by delaying the product push until January.
That being the case we are still going to be hard at work behind the scenes tweaking and streamlining Yahoo! Mail Classic. Already back by popular demand is Forward as Attachment. Many of you never saw it go away, only seeing its impending removal on the list of changes, but worry not, it will remain a part of Classic (if you are using the updated Classic all you have to do is hold the Ctrl key - Command Key for Mac users - when you click on the Forward button). As far as the product rollout goes, however, we are officially on hold until January.
We appreciate your patience and hope that you understand.

When we (the yahoo mail plus users) will have the IMAP for this service?
December 4th, 2007 at 11:53 am
I just wanted to say that I did download the new mail and really loved the whole look and options, but I just couldn’t make myself stick with the change because you didn’t offer the avatar options you have available on the classic edition, and while this may not be an important thing to most people, I really enjoy playing with her and changing all of her looks, backgrounds, extras, etc to match the season or emotion I’m feeling that day. If there’s any way to make avatars as part of the package I would switch immediately to the new version!! Thanks for the opportunity to get my 2 cents in.

None of my mail “gadgets” work so I can’t compose, reply, check mail, etc. I can only read 15 messages and the rest are “loading”…..for an hour. I can’t click on “Mail Classic” to change back. I can switch folders or switch to “My yahoo”, but that’s all. I want the old mail back until everything’s working
December 4th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Ditto Steve’s problems - Keep on tweakin - the mail that is.
December 4th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
My mail function is out. I am not able to write new mail!
December 4th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
The new mail is horrible I cant delete messages, they never all load, and I cant change back to the old mail. I have written in to yahoo but they cant seem to fix it. I dont want to have to make an new screen name so come on fix this stuff.

I’ve been a yahoo user for about 20yrs now - I still pay for the premium service even though gmail is free because I do in fact prefer Yahoo to Gmail—but one thing I hate is it seems the spam has goten worse and worse and as a paying user I am still limited to how many addresses I can block– for some reason when I mark something as spam in GMail — it really seems to get rid of the spam –I even have an email account in gmail that I use as a spam account–one where I expect spam and even with that account I have less spam than I do in yahoo!! I think Yahoo needs to work on it spam control and to appreciate the paying customers enough to not limit the aMount of blocked addresses
As far as the new email roll-out– I’ve tried it a number of times and still revert back to the classic — the newer version seems ok for a fast connection but seems much slower on a slow connection than does the classic –there’s other things I prefer about the classic version–I would say though the new version looks clean–the classic works best for me!
thanks

Please add contact “categories” to Yahoo! Mail beta. This feature lives in classic and it’s essential to browsing contacts.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
I am a long time Yahoo! Mail PLUS subscriber. I prefer and will continue using the Classic Mail. I have not yet been updated.
1. Thanks very much for leaving Forward as Attachment functionality in the pending update. That would have been sorely missed.
2. Please do not remove the Attachment Preview functionality! That is one of the reasons I stayed with the Classic version (New Mail doesn’t have it).
December 4th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
I checked out the new Yahoo mail but went back to classic because I did not want the messenger function. I received spyware through use of the messenger so I do not want any connection to it.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
I like the new Yahoo Mail but this doesn’t allow you to save a ‘message text’onto a file in your hard drive (as txt)as was the case with Classic!
December 4th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Please do bring IMAP for the all new Y! Mail!
I use Y! push email on my iPhone, and I’d like my inbox, folders, and read/unread counts to stay in sync. Without IMAP all around, it really truly reduces the value.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Bonny, do you live in a time-space discontinuum warp bubble?
You’ve been using Yahoo for about 20 years now? That’s pretty impressive, given that Yahoo was founded in 1994..
December 4th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Seems that altho I have set my options to go back to original folder, when I delete a message, it just opens the next one in line. I have checked my settings and they are correct to NOT do this. Tweak some more!!
December 4th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
I am not able to bgring up e-mail inbox, sent, trash etc. What I do get is some useless mail item that suggeststhat I become a better chat, text, or some other thing that I don’t want.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:31 pm
Why do I want a mail “home”? I already have a yahoo home page that has the things I want. It is annoying to have to select the inbox and wait for it to show, and for some reason there is a time lag that makes it more annoying. Can you put some feature into this application that allows one to remove the junk? Mail readers should not be clunky.
December 4th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
My contact list now comes up as a pop-up and is continually blocked even if I turn off the pop-up blocker. Therefore, I cannot forward any e-mails at this time.
December 4th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
I really dislike the new format especially the ads.
December 4th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
To many commercials on the new format. It takes longer to load with adds flashing everywhere. Very distracting.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
I have been using the new mail for several months now. All was well until a few days ago. Now my buttons on the inbox tab don’t work, I can’t go to my contacts, I can’t commpose a new email and a few other problems. All started on 11-30-07. I see others are having same problem. Please fix soon.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
I don’t like the new format, it will not let me delete mail or the spam. It will not load all of my mail.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:31 pm
I tried the new Yahoo e-mail and it didn’t work at all. I am very disappointed with Yahoo. I expect more from the. Fortunately I was able to go back to the old e-mail.
December 4th, 2007 at 6:20 pm
Please IMAP, please, please! Pretty please!!
December 4th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
i cannot reviewing some of the details in this post. what can i do?
December 4th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
I am still not able to delete, forward, or reply to my emails. Please fix this problem. This has been going on for weeks now.
December 4th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
I cut and pasted the following comment because I have exactly the same problem. I am running xt on a pretty new computer with Comcast high speed service, Windows explorer. I also use Firefox which works fine with the new yahoo mail but most of what I do is on windows IE.
December 4th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Please get me my old classic. The new one is
horrible, I have 163 messages that I cannot
delete, and I can’t switch back to Classic.
The e-mails load forever, I hate to have to
sign up for a new e-mail address. PLEASE FIX IT
December 4th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
I wish yahoo would bring the photo thumbnails to email again. it was a great feature and easy to do.I’m staying classic.
December 4th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
The new mail is horrible I cant delete messages, they never all load, and I cant change back to the old mail. I have written in to yahoo but they cant seem to fix it. I dont want to have to make an new screen name so come on fix this stuff. I’m expecting email from a very important source and if all mail is not loading correctly ir too slow then where do you think that will leave me? Please fix problems. I know change can be good but until all information is working properly then stay with what you have, If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it. Pardon my language……
December 4th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
I try the new mail every so often and I can never get it to work. Now I can’t find ecards when I am composing an email. Please never drop the classic version!
December 4th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

This new Beta Yahoo Mail bites the big one. All Yahoo has done is add a fancy look. This new look isn’t needed, nor is all the junk that has been added. It’s just a bunch of clutter. Keep it simple and clean. This new look makes getting to your mail slower. I can’t stand the delay using this garbage called “personal assistant.” Updates are suppose to improve speed, not slow it down. To all you Yahoo users, remember one thing. New isn’t always better.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:10 am
please i dont like the new yahoo. pls can i be

It s very hard not be able to go back to the old classic mail box which i prefer.
I keep being put to the new one which i don t like. A bit fed up with that. And no clear instructions. When you click onto classic mlail, nothing happens.
December 5th, 2007 at 3:45 am
I only use mail classic.
Altho I am a fanatic tech user, I am conservative when it comes to having a UI. I am sick of marketing that only touts a “new and improved” UI. If the old one sucked so bad, why did they make it?
Also, I can not put up with large ad space in new yahoo mail.

December 5th, 2007 at 4:40 am
I too have tried the new mail several times and I hate it, takes too long too load even with high speed, intrusive ads, etc. Luckily I have been able to switch back. I will stay with classic for as long as I can.
Maybe instead of All-New Yahoo Mail, it could be, YahooVista
December 5th, 2007 at 5:16 am
Pleeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeee bring back “Insert Photo”! Photo attachments many times aren’t viewed as anything other than the thumbnail because it’s too much hassle to open the attachment. Viewing the photo within the body of the email was so much nicer, easier, faster, more practical. For many, many people, photo sharing is HUGE! Please return “Insert Photo”!
Thanks,
Robin

my e-mail address is not updated so i can not access my e-mails.why?
December 5th, 2007 at 6:17 am
Is that a rare moment of candor from Yahoo? Please forgive me while I look for something strong to revive me to consciousness. I fainted from the sheer exhilaration of getting an honest answer from someone who works at Yahoo. Yes you did screw up, but at least you admitted it this time. That’s start towards dealing with your customers in a more straightforward manner. Keep it up.
December 5th, 2007 at 6:52 am
i have several yahoo mail accounts, and have switched over to the new mail on a couple of them, but i switched back right away. NOTHING WORKS in the new version!
i am very tech-savvy (i spend a lot of time on the net, as well as in my mailbox). i did everything i could think of to tweek it but it would not work.
i like the old version. if you do get the new one working, PLEASE keep the old one!
December 5th, 2007 at 7:16 am
Way too slow with the newer version
December 5th, 2007 at 7:21 am
The new version is lacking - too many ads (and I’m a Yahoo Plus paying user) and you cannot open an e-mail in a new window or enlarge - if you’re going for the “Outlook” look and functionality, please add the features that make outlook a preferred business application. Too many times I receive the “mail is loading” message, only to wait and wait. The “new” yahoo has been disappointing at best. Spamguard is a joke - I still receive the same spam e-mails (different address, but same content) after “reporting”. I’ll remian a “classic” user with Outlook importing my yahoo mail.
December 5th, 2007 at 8:18 am
Sounds like a bunch of cry-babies. The new yahoo works fine, a little cluttered with the ads but just fine. How can someone say they’re tech-savvy and not be able to clear uop their settings problems???
December 5th, 2007 at 8:27 am
New mail is great except that it *will not* load on the rickety dial-up offered at my farm, in rural Missouri. I can’t afford satellite and cable/ DSL stopped heading our way in the last 1980’s (I’m not joking). On an artist’s wages I must use dial-up/ classic mail, which is fine.
I’m writing to thank you for keeping it! If it were discontinued, I’d have to stop using Yahoo Mail! : (
So, thanks : )
December 5th, 2007 at 8:32 am
I have tried it at least three times and each time, it breaks and won’t allow me to view mail, compose mail, or any other of the things it’s supposed to do, and the only way I am able to do them is to switch back to the classic view. I don’t want to switch permanently until I can be sure this problem won’t happen.
December 5th, 2007 at 8:38 am
BTW, the problem seems to be specific to the account I use in Internet Explorer, but not the one I use in Firefox. I suspect it is because I refuse to upgrade to Windows Vista.
You need to keep the classic version for those who don’t want to upgrade their system.
December 5th, 2007 at 9:21 am
Thanks for keeping “forward as attachment”! You guys are awesome! Ryan K is DA MAN! Thanks for listening to user feedback.
I have used yahoo mail since the late 1990’s and will continue to do so. I like the additional yahoo mail plus features as well.
December 5th, 2007 at 9:24 am
You offer an upgrade to the new version yet when I refused and clicked on the option to use the classic version you end up pushing some upgrades through and I think Ièm getting a mix of the two? Now it is impossible to keep logged in and it takes forever to view my messages. Nice try but keep working at it because it really sucks now!
December 5th, 2007 at 9:50 am
Add an option to delete a message after sending, so it doesn’t go to sent folder. Now I just have one more folder I have to periodically clean up. Before I just saved things I wanted to follow up on.
Also, make signature an option. I use same a/c for personal and business. So when I send personal I have to delete my business info.
Spam is worse than ever!
December 5th, 2007 at 9:54 am
Today I notice I must go to options to get Classic back rather than at the top. New mail and classic have their usages and the user should be able to select either view whenever they wish.
On another note. Classic is slower because rather than using thumbnails of images, the entire image is produced. This might be OK, if the image were scaled properly, but is certainly slower than viewing the thumbnails.
Of course, it would help if the thumbnails in classic worked reliably. Perhaps the effort on new mail has resulted in errors in the thumbp1.mail.mud.yahoo.com server farm links.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:08 am
I have been using the new mail but have been experiencing problems lately. When I try to access my mail at work, using Internet Explorer, I am unable to click on anything except for the already open inbox folder. I cannot compose, reply, delete, or even change back to classic. Whenever I try to click on a link, the little error box on the bottom left hand corner comes up. I do not have this problem when I access my account at home through Firefox. It seems to be a problem with internet explorer.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:36 am
After reading a lot of these comments I do feel a little better because I thought it was just my account that was all messed up. There are some MAJOR issues with this new Yahoo e-mail. It’s terrible! I can not pull up my contact list, can not reply to e-mails either. I have not been able to change back to classic either and all my old messages will not come up at all. It just sits there and says LOADING. I think it’s been loading for over an hour now and still no e-mails are coming up. Wow, this needs to be fixed and quickly YAHOO. Please do something fast!!!
December 5th, 2007 at 10:39 am
Please, please don’t remove the Attachment Preview feature! This is one of the most useful features of Yahoo! Mail Classic, and the main reason I haven’t switched to the new version. Not all of us own Word or Excel, or browse the web on computers (or cell phones!) powerful enough to run them or OpenOffice.org.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:11 am
I do not like or want your new system but I can not get back the “Classic” form that I did like.
Now all I get is incoming e-mails and I can not compose or send an e-mail and I am very frustrated. I need these functions in my daily work. Please let me know how I can swich back. I am totally discouraging about ever “updating” my computer again. It has only meant trouble and loss of function for me.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
I hate your new mail version, I want the classic back. I can’t access, send or anything. I tried setting up another account and that worked but the same old thing can use the new version. I have important stuff in my primary account that I have had since 2003, please switch me back and get rid of the new account I created 12/5 for me. I tried the options and followed instructions but it will not let me do anything. YUK ON THIS NEW VERSION.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
I am staying with Classic b/c of Forward as attachment. If you remove it then I should check the other Mail providers. Or you add it to the full version.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
somtimes new is just not better. I switched back to the old version.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
For several months I have been periodically trying the new version to see if it works as well (as fast) as classic, only to return to classic. I haven’t tried recently. Now I am reading that a bunch of folks here cannot get back into classic once they hop over to try out the new version. If that’s the case then there is no way that I will even test out the new release again.
also.. BRING BACK THE PHOTO INSERT FUNCTION.. or at least explain why you won’t bring it back.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:39 pm
My mail is totally screwd up. I can’t delete any mail and can’t acces my contacts. Anybody now how I get mail classic back. The new one is not working at all. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!!!
