Which Yahoo! Mail do you really have?

Based on the comments being left, as well as some of the email that has been rolling in, it has dawned on me that “what we have here, is … failure to communicate” (I guess I’m in a movie mood this week). Anyway, I really don’t want to sound petty but if I’m going to let people here know what is on your minds I need to make sure I’m telling the right stuff to the right people. So the goal of today’s blog post is to help get more of us on the same page with which group of users you may fall into.

Yahoo! has two distinct offerings for Mail. The original version is what we are calling “Classic”, and it’s the HTML version that I’m sure almost all of you have used it at one time or another. The other version, commonly referred to as “Beta”, is known as “New Mail” (or “All New Mail”), is built off of an AJAX framework, and is the one that features drag ‘n’ drop functionality, integrated Messenger, RSS feeds, and a number of other features that have been outlined on this very blog.

Now once you have identified which product you are using the next step is to identify if you have been transitioned to the latest version. For “New Mail” it is very easy. Just about everyone that is using the New Mail is already out of Beta, but the easy way to tell is if the Yahoo! Mail logo in the top left corner still says Beta, you are still awaiting transition. If you are a Classic Mail user, the changes are little more subtle, so I’ll run through some of them.

The most obvious way to tell is looking at the Welcome page after logging in. If you see your Avatar, you are in the older version of Classic

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/oldclassicavatar-1.jpg

and if you see a new & improved News module below the space where you Avatar used to be, you are in the updated Classic.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/topstories.jpg

If you are in the updated version of Classic your Options link (in the upper right) will no longer look like this -

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/oldclassicoptions.jpg

and instead looks like this (note the links have been reduced and the Options link is now a drop-down menu)

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/classic1.jpg

Another way to tell if you are in the updated Classic is the look of your Inbox. Here is the older version (with “Bulk” folder and no flagging option) -

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/oldclassicbulkflags.jpg

and the updated Classic looks like this (Bulk changed to Spam, and a Flag column added) -

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/classic3.jpg

So to sum up, we’ve got 3 main buckets that should cover just about all of your feedback needs.

    • Original Classic Mail
    • Updated Classic Mail
    • New Mail (or TMFKAB - The Mail Formerly Known As Beta)

Again, sorry if that seemed silly to some of you, but I absolutely have to know what feedback relates to what version each of you is on.

      Thanks,

      http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/blogpic.jpgRyan K.

When I updated the new Yahoo it caused several problems so I went back to the classic version. I liked the beta and would like that back as the new one is not the same. How do I go about getting it back?

      Hi everyone,
      -
      john and eenoogje,
You are welcome to stick with Classic :)
      -
      John and cdm9005,
We are rolling it out gradually (just like we did with New Mail a few months back). We are also being extra careful because the holiday season is approaching and we know that it is a critical time for people to communicate. I’ll update as soon as I can.
      -
      Michael,
You can switch back to Classic by clicking on the “Mail Classic” link just below your Yahoo! ID, or the “Switch to Yahoo! Mail Classic” link under the Options dropdown.
      -
      josths,
We understand that “bloat” is a concern for many web users, and are always looking for ways to streamline. The list of changes outlines several things that are going away as well as being added.

Overall I do not mind the changes to the new mail. The only thing that bothers me about it is that I suddenly have a news page to go through to get to the actual mail. I go to mail via my Yahoo and do not want the extra page but cannot remove it. I would love an option to delete the extra page or make the mail page the default. Is there any way to do this? Thanks.

Y! Mail Classic in its updated form is a nice evolution of the original and will be satisfactory until a final decision concerning Y! mash is made. I like the layout, pulldown extensions and all, of the AJAX-based Y! Mail Beta; but other components, such as Y! Calendar and Y! Notepad, need to be rewritten for AJAX in order to blend seamlessly with the new Y! Mail.

I too have tried the beta twice (at least), and like the layout and features. However, it is not nearly as fast. I’m sure it is due to the afformentioned “Bloat”. Each time I have gone back to the original mail to speed things up. Sorry, it’s a good idea, but for someone who just want a good clean, FAST, email program.

Idea for new Yahoo! business model: charge users a modest monthly fee ($1 per month) to use the OLD fast-loading, original classic mail interface, and leave the new and improved garbage to freeloaders that need marketing pushed at them.

I have a drop down on a yahoo home page for ‘Mail, Messenger, Radio, Weather, Local, and Horoscopes’.
I used to be able to put my cursor over ‘Mail’ and it would drop down and show me the subject and who my first few emails in my inbox were. NOW as of about a month ago (around the same time I upgraded to Yahoo plus), there are no emails listed, just a link that says “Please go to ‘mail.yahoo.com’ to retrieve you mail”.
What happened, and how do I get it back?

      Great.

So are there any plans to get everyone on the same mail so you aren’t trying to talk to 3 different groups of users at once?

Yahoo’s been through a lot of changes lately, and while the improvements have been great, there is a lot of confusion, mostly caused by these “failures to communicate”. And I hate to say it, but a lot of those failures are on yahoo’s end.

Choices are good, but on the other hand the entire point of a brand name is consistency. I think it’s time yahoo got organized.

For many years, I used Lotus Notes[tm] at work and went nuts dealing with the differences re Yahoo Classic. When Yahoo launched its new Beta, which is quite similar to the Notes[tm]e-mail architecture, I glomed right on to it. Now, even though retired, I still prefer the New Yahoo e-mail.

Oh and while I recognize the importance of ads, when they get to the point that they stop mail from loading or interfere with other functions, they’re a a problem.

One that happens a lot unfortunately. Ads that cause problems, make loud noises, take over my page or interfere with the million things I’m trying to get done in a day turn me off of both Yahoo and the product advertised.

Animation and flashy ads may look great, but when they make it take 10 minutes or more to load or refresh my inbox, and I can’t do anything in the meantime but sit there and wait, it’s a problem. I don’t check mail as often and communication is delayed.

I used to constantly have a mail tab open, any time during the day I would slip over, answer mail as it came in, then get back to my day, but with the interference from the ads in new mail I can’t do that. The constant reloading and refreshing of the ads makes every mail trip take at least 20 minutes. I have to set aside an hour every morning and every evening for mail and just not answer what I can’t get to in that time.

Do yourselves a favor, keep the ads simple.

After seven years, I still love Yahoo Mail and will keep using it as long as I can consider it “mine” through settings and/or preferences to make it work the way I want. However, I would review my usage when I’m forced into something that doesn’t work for me. That’s why I’m back with Classic after trying to use New Mail for a week.

The biggest thing that didn’t work for me is the size of the reading pane is too small. Resizing the message pane to it’s smallest amount still doesn’t leave the reading pane big after screen space is taken by the header, toolbar and footer. Reading a message ten lines at a time is no good. I know the message can be opened in it’s own tab but that is extra navigation (three clicks vs one) and load time. From a user interface standpoint, reading messages is MUCH harder in New Mail than Classic.

Second biggest is the slow response time. Yes, I have cable ‘net - not dial up. I actually like the new AJAX toolbar but not at the expense of speed.

Last is some changes in the UI that don’t prevent but slow down navigation. Logging into New Mail puts us at the “new & improved News module” you’ve shown in the blog above. I already have MyYahoo for news so why would I want to see it when I log into Mail? That just doesn’t make sense.

I know the Mail Blog isn’t a support site, but thanks for forwarding our comments to the right people.

I am not sure which mail I have, I know I had Beta,on my dsl in Kendallville, but since I am traveling and using dial up I think I have been switched to classic and then to new then to something else. It is very confussing to deal with all of these different mails. And then somtimes when I am tryng to read they all just disappear. Why don’t you just have a simple read and write click to do this instead of compose and draft. I think Yahoo is very slow in downloading there mail folder and then they have to download the one theat you have selected. Then double click to read, then you have to move it and you can’t put it in a Rec. folder from the person who sent it. Change is good but also bad.

Sounds like theres a lot of users with slow computers and slow connections, or who are basic users (which is fine). The new mail has always worked great for me, its very responsive and the features are nice. I use professional desktop clients for my mail and have for years, so the familiarity when using my yahoo account is appealing. I will never go back to the poor, clunk classic interface; unless of course I get stuck on a terrible setup, which is unlikely.

First blush, it looked too much like microsoft’s hotmail. Pressed for time, I went right back to Classic Yahoo Mail.

Now, I have to copy and paste from the address book, to compose and send an email. It no longer populates the field, when you click on the link.

It would also be nice to be able to send up to 300 emails, at one time.

My connection is Verizon Wireless, exclusively.

You know, I had yahoo mail that had so much saving room on it. All of the sudden, when trying to access emails I had been saving, they are all gone. I want to know what happen to all the space that was available, why I wasn’t told to copy the messages before they were deleted and why I have not been told there is another huge change.

I have had yahoo since www first began. I have the same address since the 4th year of starting. Now it is getting to the point where I will have to find another mail, gmail possibly, to suit my needs.

Service was the main point of sticking with you over the years. Lack of communication is what is going to change my loyalty. The ball is in your court and your response will make the decision, or lack of response.

I like the options available in the new mail, but they typically don’t work. I’m often irritated with error messages, emails that don’t load, etc. I’m very close to switching back to the “Classic without any cool features” version simply because it was more reliable. Hopefully the issues will be fixed soon. :(

I really hate your new Yahoo, new Yahoo mail. It’s full of advertising and forces me to wade through things I don’t want to look at.

Sorry tried multiple times to upload the “new” version and kept getting error messages. After reading all the above I’ll stick with classic thank you. If ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

I can’t stand the New Improved version. I much prefer the Classic. Coke tried it once and quickly realized it was a Big Fat Mistake !!!

I have posted here a few times now and each and every time there are a few common points of fact I have found. Of the 55 post only a few care for the “new mail” and I am in agreement with the majority I prefer the “classic”. I have tired to contact Yahoo about some of the following issues, I have even ask while on the phone with customer service for my merchant account and they refuse to talk about anything to do with “new mail”.
Here are the common complaints and by the way I connect at 10 MEGS.
      loads to slow
      errors
      advertisement
      to “busy”
      small reading pain
I have tried several times to use “new mail” and experience all the same problems, I just need mail when I go to mail; fast, easy, reliable mail. I use My Yahoo as a home page and now that our browsers allow for tabbing my email account loads with my home page. PLEASE before anyone thinks that I am down on Yahoo know this I pay for my music, merchant account and web hosting through Yahoo and would hope that it does not come down to paying for my mail. I would like for Yahoo to respond to all the complaints about “new email” and know that we would not take the time to post our comments if we did not care!

      To: Ms. Betty.
Look into Mozilla Firefox. Better, more secure browser than IE. Has add-ons to control animation/flash etc, etc.

I use Yahoo! New Mail (or TMFKAB - The Mail Formerly Known As Beta). I switched to Beta a long, long time ago and never switched back. It’s my favorite email application. Maybe you need an “option” that says “email app & version”. Ha! Ha! Thanks for all the good work.
