Comments about Comments

At Blog World last week one of the hottest topics in all sessions was Comments. Whether or not to have them, how to moderate them, how to utilize them, etc. I, for one, am a big supporter of blog comments in general. I want to hear what you guys are thinking and experiencing, so that I can communicate that to the product, design, QA, engineering, customer care, and marketing teams.

There is a “Comments Policy” displayed in the sidebar, but based on some of the comments I suspect that many people haven’t ventured down the page to glance at it.

Give us your $.02. We encourage your comments, quibbles, questions, and suggestions. But please mind your manners. You know the drill… stay on topic, be respectful, and avoid spam, profanity, or anything that violates our Terms of Service.

I’d like to expand on that a little and offer up some more detailed tips and guidelines so that we can hopefully utilize each other more effectively.

  • No personal attacks: This includes each other as well as Yahoo! staffers. No name calling or insulting. I’m happy to hear your frustrations over features or functionality, but there is no need to insult anyone.
  • Not an alternative to Customer Care: This is not a place to go instead of going to instead of our Customer Care team. It’s just not practical. If I see certain issues repeating I’m then able to shine a light on them internally, which can help get it resolved for everyone. Which leads me to the next tip…
  • Be as specific as possible: If I’m going to shine a light on something internally I need to know what to shine it on. If 25 people say that they “can’t access email” that is something I can pass along but will be hard to isolate. If I get 5 people who say “I’m using the All-New Mail, in Firefox, on Windows, and (blank) is happening whenever I click on (blank). What’s going on?”, then we’ve got something to work with. The first one is pretty vague, but with the second example I can go straight to the Product Manager for New Mail and tell him EXACTLY where the problem is occurring.

As Jerry said to Rod…

Help me help you!

And don’t forget, I may not be able to respond to all comments, but that doesn’t mean I’m not reading them and passing them along!

Hi,

I have many domains handled by Yahoo Domains. They send me emails about renewals or about an upcoming email change but they do not always say which domain the email applies to. This makes the notification kind of worthless.

As to these comments, I am using Mac OS X Tiger with Firefox 2.0.0.9 and I cannot use an apostrophe because it calls the firefox search function. Kind of pain. Makes it harder to comment.

Hope these comments help.

Hi Anonymous,
-
In some cases people choose the comments section to share an issue they may be having with the product … but are sometimes inappropriate (overly rude) or unclear. I want to make sure that issues get bubbled up to those who can resolve, but I need details to do that.

I’m quite happy with the format on My Yahoo, it suits me perfectly. Its laid out in an easy to read format and I dont have to think about it. That said, unless I go through yahoo email I’m forced to enter Yahoo Beta world. When it was initially offered I tried it and I did not like it. Is there a reason I have to use Yahoo Beta?
Make it stop make it stop!!!!

Hi ryan..:)
well thanks for allowing us to post our comments and views…:)
I am using yahoo! mail for quite a long time now and for the past 3~4 months i have been trying to configure the weather gadget in the right pane in yahoo! mail…but the bad thing is whenever i try to configure it using my location it says-”We are sorry, our system is busy!please try again in a few minutes”:(
Well i would be grateful if u look towards this matter positively…:)
Regards,

P.S:The problem is not happening in case of creating a new account…there the weather gadget can be configured at ease.

Yahoo mail beta takes a long to load. Also there is a problem with attachments. My Yahoo Beta has an easy to read to format but there are no interesting colors or backgrounds.

My polite requests to Yahoo customer service have all been ignored or misunderstood. Sometimes being polite doesn’t pay off. I posted some comments to this blog in the hopes of getting someone - anyone’s - attention. Maybe rudeness is not ok - but the problems I’ve had with my account (which I’ve recounted in detail dozens of times to no avail, both in emails and on this blog) drove me to it. Sometimes you have to yell to be heard.

On a related topic - I find it amusing that there’s even a debate over whether to allow comments. Blogs that don’t allow comments are simply one-way billboards that ignore the interactivity that people expect/demand from the internet. Sure, you get some rude comments. But if you deny people the opportunity to be part of a conversation, you might as well stop publishing a blog.

Greetings. Here is my issue , The texting function in my primary yahoo account doesn’t work. On My personal lap top, Kid 1’s desktop, Kid 2 Mac Book Pro, Or All 3 computers I checked it with at work. The really odd thing is my back up Yahoo account can text like a champ from all the above boxes and works with no complaints at all. I chatted with 3 different CS reps who all checked my account and confirmed that Yes No TEXT messages for you! And then forwarded it up to the “Engineering” Team for resolution. Who promptly responded that my account was working without problems Then advised me to re check everything on my end. And of course to have a great day. Insert loud scream of frustration here. Any help you can offer would be great thanks.

While I think the give-and-take is nice, how does “we’re not customer care” reconcile with “be as specific as possible”? It seems like the specificity would be necessary for the customer care people to fix the problem, and that level of detail here would start to stray over that line…

For myself, I’m annoyed that every time I log into Y!Mail at work (on a Windows box, instead of the Mac at home) I’m presented with a screen asking me why I’m not on MyYahoo! Beta. I’m not on it because I don’t like it. I already tried it and changed back. I don’t need to be asked every time I log into Y!Mail if I want to switch. I want to see my mail, not a marketing pitch.

Thanks…

The reason I have posted problems here in the comment section is that I NEVER get a satisfactory response from your “official” support channels. The responses I have gotten are worse than what one would expect from the “proverbial” overseas call centers. Every time the response is “no trouble with your account!” Even when I get a pop up in Y!M telling me to “contact support”. My carefully cut/pasted message is ignored by your response center help. Stating all this, I will submit yet again, that the RSS feed is not working properly. The “new feeds” indicator doesn’t indicate new feeds, but the behavior NOW is even worse. When I click the unexpanded RSS feed flag to see if there are ANY new feeds, I get none. I have to expand the RSS feed section, then click the master RSS feed flag to see new messages. So how in the world am I to explain this to your lame customer support folks. (When I bring Y!M up fresh, it behaves correctly, but I leave my browser up all the time and come back to check feeds, mail, etc. That is when it fails.)

Keep up the good work. Oh, I am a PAYING customer for Y!M. That privilege “buys” me nothing in terms of improved support, which is a bit disappointing.

Using the “Sent Date” as the timestamp of the message has got to be fixed. You are trusting the sender of the message’s time, and it is often spoofed by spammers to some date way in the future. Please start using the “Received Date” or at least giving that as an option.

Do you want to know why people put comments that should go to customer care in this space? It is because “customer care” just sents out robot responses and does not address system dysfunction issues. For instance, there are many comments about Yahoos lackluster performance filtering spam, especially compared to Google’s Gmail.

It is a competitive market and Yahoo users, especialy those who pay the extra $20, are not captives. Next time you and your colleagues want to disregard complaints about Yahoo’s poor track record filtering spam, try to think about the real meaning of the word “customer.”

I liked it better! the “new” mail will not allow me to click on individual addresses that I want when I want to select several, now I have to click yes I want to delete when dumping spam(clearing a mailbox), longer download time,no matter what I do, the boxes-incoming, reply are to small or too large- I’d really rather return to the old yahoo mail! for me, it worked! the only thing that puzzled me about the old, now new yahoo mail is I tell yahoo this or that is spam and soon it is back in my regular mail-examples-shoes.com, fredricks. com. do the above pay yahoo to get access or what?

1. You’re not Customer Care, true. But please do NOT ignore the fact that so many people find it necessary to post their problems here. As many of the readers here could testify, your Customer Care department is really not helpful and not functional. They do not understand and do not really resolve customer’s problems. Poor diagnosing, poor troubleshooting, poor problem solving, poor follow-up. Please reflect this to the appropriate department head.

2. Even though I am using the new Yahoo Mail, I concur with other users that there were NEVER this many problems accessing and using Yahoo Mail in the last 10 years until this new version. Even the first Beta version was usable. But the last Beta version and this official New version are very unstable and unreliable. Again, please do NOT ignore this feedback. Yahoo has taken something that worked well and turned it into something that’s cool but doesn’t work reliably anymore. And Customer Care is of no help.

Hope you could do something to fix these two main complaints. Software is more than just adding cool features and using the latest Ajax technology. Customer expectation, customer relationship management, and customer care are all part of the overall customer experience.

Unfortunately, Ryan, so many folks post “Customer Care” issues here because Yahoo’s Customer Service is so notoriously awful!

And I say that as a long-time Yahoo Mail Plus user who’s generally thrilled with Yahoo’s services.

But you know several of us have complained in the Y-Mail group about it while we’ve been Beta testing. And I imagine this deficiency in Yahoo’s services has much to do with the company’s continued bad press.

A recent example for me was regarding Yahoo Mobile. I was directed by the Help pages to use an online comment submission with very few fields to fill out. My first response back from Customer Service was to reply to them by stating my problem clearly and using specific details. After doing that, the next response was a fairly canned message that showed me the team member had clearly failed to read the detailed reply I sent. Only after responding in a somewhat angry manner did I get a team member who managed to offer me a possible solution. Since then, my open ticket has been moving along in an acceptable fashion.

In earlier years we could embed photos into our email messages. Then Yahoo took that away from us.
I sure wish you would bring that back.

As a work-around I have found that I can drag a photo I uploaded into Photobucket into the body of my letter and it will appear to the receiver, but doing that is a pain.
Bring back the ability to embed our pictures in our letters, not just attach them.

I add my name to the ones asking for the capability to insert images/graphics/pictures (.jpg-type) directly into the text - like Outlook and Outlook Express. It’s so much easier to see the images while you’re reading the message, rather than bouncing around opening and closing attachments.

Can Yahoo mail expand the Spam filters from 500 to, like, 2,000 or so? I’ve max’d out the limit, but am still receiving Spam that I would like to have rejected automatically. I believe there are others that have asked the same question. Anything you can tell us, Andy?

Lot of the spam comes with wrong time stamp, something in the very past, or something few days older. When I see new email, it gets lost in the middle or somewhere in the end. It is very difficult to find such message and delete it. Can something be done about it, or have some option to see all unread email, or sort the mail by receive order instead of published time (which is many a times wrong for SPAM).

Thanks.

Looks like the hot topic is about Customer Care, and whether or not I’m contradicting myself.
-
Simply put, I can’t resolve individual issues here. Just not enough bandwidth. BUT (and here’s he cool part) detailed reports from you guys can lead to our product and technology teams identifying a broader issue and fixing it at the source (rather than Customer Care trying to correct it one at a time).

I have been a Yahoo email acct holder for 8 years. Until recently, I have been very satisfied with it. However since all the beta stuff has been going on, I opened a Gmail acct and if I cannot continue to function my online business without the hassles, I am switching everything over.

Rather than leaving a long message, here are a few bullet points:

1. What happened to Quick Builder in the address book? That was a great time saver to upload the many opt in subscribers from our real estate business website into our newsletter.

2. Many problems with error codes (5 & 6). Sometimes email can’t be opened or it takes forever to open.

3. Customer service response is robotic. Tried to call the telephone customer service number the other day (30 minute wait).

4. The mail search function is broke on my acct but works on my wife’s email acct. Customer service says its broke but no real estimated time frame to fix.

5. Don’t like all the Beta stuff going on. You never know what’s changed or when.

6. Lots of issues with the mobile email system. Beta has been very frustrating. The yahoo mobile calender went away for 2 weeks then reappears out of the blue.

7. Lastly and MOST IMPORTANTLY, we run an opt in real estate business. Yet when I email to these opt in subscribers, Yahoo blocks us as spam. Even after we have proven our opt in format to Yahoo and complied with their policies, we are still blocked. NO ONE at Yahoo has been able to deal with the issue.

I know IMAP is enabled on my mobile devices, but let’s bring IMAP access to the desktop. I doubt I’d leave for Gmail (who has implemented IMAP), but there are those who will.

I recvd all sort of suggestions but none official. I clear every thing, including clean disc etc n I have a active NORTON n it still don’t help.

Some say YAHOO retrict the usage, isn’t all ISP want us to log into their web as long as possible?

If Yahoo don’t allow un-interupted service, is time to switch over to other ISP example gmail or hotmail or what??

can someone from Yahoo adv?

These comments are hard to organize and respond to. Can we have forum with topic threads? Some of these need more information. For example, someone says there is a problem with a mail button on the “home page” — but I get the mail button at yahoo.com. (By the way, I like my home page set to MyYahoo, which makes things simpler.)
