New Yahoo! Mail Security Site

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Let’s face it, spammers and phishers are a right pain. And for those of you looking to educate yourselves and to find ways to stay ahead of the spammers and scammers, I’ve got some good news for you. We’ve just launched a new Yahoo Mail Security site (uk.antispam.yahoo.com).

Yahoo Mail Security Site

In it, you’ll find great tips on dealing with spammers, viruses and phishing. And like I’ve told you before, there is no Yahoo! Lottery and you will not win a boatload of cash from an unsolicited email. But with our new security center you can win the fight against spam.

Happy emailing,

pop.jpgOk, ok, many of you have in fact been here before. But I do have a strong suspicion that many of you are also visiting for the first time (after seeing the link from the Sign-In page).  For those of you who have been here before, please bear with me .

My name is Ryan, and this is the Yahoo! Mail blog, the home for all things relating to Yahoo! Mail.  Whether you are looking for the …

… or what have you, this is where you can go to find it.  You can also subscribe to the RSS Feed, or even better you can add it to MyYahoo by clicking Add to My Yahoo! and you can see updates there!  I look forward to seeing you back here in the future.

Optimize Mail by updating that older Toolbar

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Recently there was some chatter over in the Y-Mail Group about some messaging that urges users to update their Toolbar to make Mail faster. I’m guessing that some of you folks may have seen the message too, so it’s probably worth commenting on here as well.
http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/toolbar.jpg

First and foremost, this does not mean that you have to have Yahoo! Toolbar in order to use Yahoo! Mail. Nor does it mean that we are only giving faster service for people using Toolbar.

What it does mean is that the Toolbar team has been working hard to streamline how the Toolbar works. And if you aren’t using the leaner, meaner, version you may not be enjoying the best experience possible with Mail.

Now you should only be seeing the message if you are ALREADY using Toolbar, but are using an older version. If you aren’t already a Toolbar user, but are seeing this message anyway, let me know so I can find out why and get that fixed.

Introducing the New & Improved Yahoo! Mail Security Site

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

For those of you out there who have been looking for a place to find all of the latest and greatest ways to protect your inbox from malicious email, I’ve got some exciting news. The Yahoo! Mail Security Site (antispam.yahoo.com) has been overhauled and has a bunch of great new info for you.

The image “http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/secsite1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/oldsecsite.pngSome of you may remember the old Security Site. It was nice and all, but the updated site features better overall organization, has even more tips to avoid that pesky spam and those dangerous viruses, and to top it off is much easier to navigate.

My personal favorite reason to visit has got to be the great new icons. The sickly, green envelope representing Viruses is awesome!

No one is a winner… (of the Yahoo! Lottery)

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

We regret to inform you that you did not win the Yahoo! lottery. Because there is no Yahoo! lottery. Please don’t send us money to claim your “winnings.”

Like other highly-visible brands, ours is a tempting one for fraudsters to hitch their wagons to. You probably have received an email or maybe even a text message on your mobile notifying you of a fabulous windfall you’ve won in a Yahoo! lottery. It usually tells you to send money or your account details. Don’t fall for it!!!!

We will never send you an email about a lottery or contest you never entered. And even though the email might look like it’s from Yahoo!, it’s not. Anyone with a Yahoo! account has a Yahoo! email address. These are unsolicited emails that should be ignored and deleted. They are usually poorly written with lots of grammatical and spelling mistakes. For example, take a look at this excerpt from the one of the most recent scams I’ve seen:

“So we appeal to you to have a bite patients to enable our Account Department carryout their works more effectively for smooth and sucessful tansfer of your winning prize $ 0ne million us dollars without any delay…”

And as more folks are getting wise to the scams, the scammers are getting more and more creative. They are employing more tricks like using pictures of the Yahoo! campus and even our logo (they get these from pictures that are available to anyone online).

As ridiculous as some of these cons may seem, we take them very seriously. Our Yahoo! Mail Abuse team looks into all reports of these scams and takes appropriate action. Plus, we are currently evaluating new filtering technology that may be effective in catching scams like this.

In the meantime, if you receive a message claiming to be from Yahoo! notifying you of a cash prize, please let us know! Just forward the message to mail-spoof@cc.yahoo-inc.com. Include the full email header (info on how to do that is here). The full header shows us the route the email took to get to your Inbox and helps us track down the culprits.

Our team really hates these scams — maybe even more than you. So help us knock them out before they hit someone else’s inbox.

Happy emailing!

Yahoo! Mail Sending Delays – UPDATED

There have been a handful of comments across recent posts describing slowness that some users are experiencing sending and receiving email. I wanted to let everyone know that we are aware of the issue and our engineering team is working to resolve it as soon as possible.

***UPDATE: All issues should now be resolved and anyone who had experienced issues should see a return to normal very shortly. ***

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your patience.

Comments about Comments

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

At Blog World last week one of the hottest topics in all sessions was Comments. Whether or not to have them, how to moderate them, how to utilize them, etc. I, for one, am a big supporter of blog comments in general. I want to hear what you guys are thinking and experiencing, so that I can communicate that to the product, design, QA, engineering, customer care, and marketing teams.

There is a “Comments Policy” displayed in the sidebar, but based on some of the comments I suspect that many people haven’t ventured down the page to glance at it.

Give us your $.02. We encourage your comments, quibbles, questions, and suggestions. But please mind your manners. You know the drill… stay on topic, be respectful, and avoid spam, profanity, or anything that violates our Terms of Service.

I’d like to expand on that a little and offer up some more detailed tips and guidelines so that we can hopefully utilize each other more effectively.

  • No personal attacks: This includes each other as well as Yahoo! staffers. No name calling or insulting. I’m happy to hear your frustrations over features or functionality, but there is no need to insult anyone.
  • Not an alternative to Customer Care: This is not a place to go instead of going to instead of our Customer Care team. It’s just not practical. If I see certain issues repeating I’m then able to shine a light on them internally, which can help get it resolved for everyone. Which leads me to the next tip…
  • Be as specific as possible: If I’m going to shine a light on something internally I need to know what to shine it on. If 25 people say that they “can’t access email” that is something I can pass along but will be hard to isolate. If I get 5 people who say “I’m using the All-New Mail, in Firefox, on Windows, and (blank) is happening whenever I click on (blank). What’s going on?”, then we’ve got something to work with. The first one is pretty vague, but with the second example I can go straight to the Product Manager for New Mail and tell him EXACTLY where the problem is occurring.

As Jerry said to Rod…

Help me help you!

And don’t forget, I may not be able to respond to all comments, but that doesn’t mean I’m not reading them and passing them along!

Get Email Alerts From Yahoo! Toolbar

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Are you like I was? Always sneaking back to your Mailbox to check if you’d got any messages. Well, if you’ve got a Yahoo! Toolbar, all that hassle can be a distant memory.

Mail Alerts
Looking at the feedback that you send us, it seems that you’re on the lookout for a way to be alerted when you get new mail in your inbox. So for this tip, I’m suggesting the Yahoo! Toolbar if you’re looking for a way to get notification for the arrival of new messages.

Toolbar Mail Alert

The Y! Toolbar has got lots of cool features, like blocking pop ups and a box to search the web from. But, for me, the best thing is the Mail button. Because, wherever you are on the web, the minute you get mail a little alert will pop up on the Toolbar to let you know. From there, it’s one click to your inbox.

Want the Yahoo! Toolbar? It’s free, find out more here. There’s a version for IE and Firefox.

If you’ve already got it you can add the Mail button (if it’s not there already). All it takes is one click here.

One Toolbar is plenty
By the way, one toolbar is enough – if you’ve got a bunch of the things, which you don’t use, just get rid of them. Ther’s a couple of ways to do that (on Windows at least), navigate to the control panel (from the Start Menu), enter Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs and REMOVE the toolbars you don’t want.

Alternatively, you can click View, then click Toolbars and un-check the ones you don’t want to see. Amazingly it works the same for Firefox and IE. Good riddance.

Happy Emailing!

Greetings from Blog World

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Lest you think that I have forgotten about you all. I don’t have any exciting news for you with this post, but if it is any consolation I am out trying to find ways to be a better blogger for you. That’s right, I am attending the Blog World and New Media Expo, where I’m trying to learn from some of the industry’s experts about all things blogging.

http://ymailupdates.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/blogworld1.jpgWith any luck this will lead to some more screencasts, maybe some podcasts, and hopefully some more ways to make the most of the discussions going on in the comments sections.

I also wanted to offer a reminder. A couple weeks back I asked you longtime users to see if you had any fun or interesting stories about your experiences with Yahoo! Mail. I have already received a lot of great ones, but I would love to hear more.

Switch to the All-New Mail

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

The Classic version of Yahoo! Mail is great. But I think the all-new Yahoo! Mail is even better. What’s not to love: Chat with your friends directly in Mail, drag and drop, improved search, new colors and that’s just to name a few.

Want to switch to the all-new mail to try out some of these great features? Here’s how:

Switch to the all-new Mail

Take a look at the image above. Just click the link “Try the new Yahoo! Mail”. With just one click you are taken directly to the new version of Yahoo! Mail.

Have a play around, and if you’re not convinced it fantastic, you can always switch back. The choice is yours. Here’s how to switch back.

Happy emailing,
Andrew – Yahoo! Mail Team
