Yahoo! Mail Turns 10!
That’s right. Today is a very big day for Yahoo! Mail. As reported over on Yodel, it’s Yahoo! Mail’s birthday … and we are now at DOUBLE FIGURES! Below is the post that John Kremer, VP of Yahoo! Mail, published earlier this morning on the corporate blog. I found the milestones section to be especially interesting, but be sure to read to the end and take a few minutes to complete a brief survey (should you be so inclined)

Yahoo! Mail
—————————
Happy 10th Birthday, Yahoo! Mail
Today marks a special milestone for Yahoo!. Ten years ago today, Yahoo! Mail was born. It’s hard to imagine that just a decade ago, the idea of free email accessible from anywhere was a novelty.
Think of how far we’ve come since then. Web mail now is one of the most popular ways to stay in touch. It’s brought families closer together, let travelers send regards from the road, and made the concept of change-of-address notices virtually obsolete.
Ten years ago, Yahoo! Mail launched with just 3 megabytes of storage and the only images you were likely to receive were ASCII Art. Today, JPEGs are by far the most popular attachment type in Yahoo! Mail. Ten years ago mobile phones were bulky, expensive luxuries that were basically used for one thing: to make important phone calls. These days, everyone from students to busy parents and grandparents use their cell phones to check email on the go. And ten years ago, many people didn’t “get” Web mail or why they would need an address that wasn’t tethered to their ISP. Now many use it as their primary personal mail address.
Since we’re feeling nostalgic, we’ve put together some email milestones from the last decade:
- October 1997: Yahoo! Mail launches following our acquisition of Four 11, creators of RocketMail.
- December 1998: The movie You’ve Got Mail debuts.
- March 1999: CNN’s Ten Commandments of Email cites that Americans sent 2.1 billion emails daily (vs. 196 billion per day this year).
- December 1999: Yahoo! Mail launches Spamguard to detect spam and banish it to a separate folder.
- January 2000: Web mail survives Y2K.
- November 2001: Pope John Paul II is the first pontiff to send an email apology.
- March 2002: It’s reported internationally that email outpaces snail mail as the preferred method for residential communication.
- December 2003: Congress passes the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 to regulate the sending of commercial email.
- July 2004: Yahoo! acquires Oddpost, bringing AJAX to Yahoo! and inspiring Yahoo! Mail’s most significant upgrade ever.
- June 2005: Broadway’s “Spamalot” wins Tony Award for Best Musical.
- March 2006: IDG study shows that Americans sent 11.8 billion photos via email in 2005, compared with 2.6 billion in 2000. By 2009, this number is projected to 25.7 billion images.
- March 2007: Yahoo! Mail announces free, unlimited e-mail storage for all users.
- August 2007: According to Comscore , the worldwide Web mail market counts approximately 543 million people, with Yahoo! Mail alone representing 255 million.
It’s funny to reflect that when Rocketmail first started, many users chose to list their email addresses in a public directory because they wanted everyone to know how to contact them. Fast-forward to a world where we invest a huge amount of time and diligence protecting our users from spam (now estimated to represent more than 70% of all email) and phishing attacks.
So what about you? We put together a brief survey to find out how your email habits have evolved over the past 10 years. Please share your thoughts with us (or leave them as comments), and we’ll be sure to report back on our findings later this month.
Until then, happy emailing!

Is yahoo mail down right now? I have not been able to access my email all morning
October 9th, 2007 at 7:35 am
Happy Birthday, BUT, why can’t we access our mail today???
October 9th, 2007 at 7:37 am
And what is the reason for Yahoo Mail not working right today…. ??? It has been slow for a couple days (atleast) now and I really do appriciate the fact that is a free service, but if it isn’t going to work right…. what’s the use? We have broadband and it isn’t just on my computer or my house that it is giving problems… I guess old age issues.. Happy Birthday anyway Yahoo! I have been a loyal to you for I think 7 years now.. thanks!!

Happy Birthday Yahoo!
Yahooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! =)
October 9th, 2007 at 8:31 am
I have had a paid yahoo e-mail account
since sometime in the 1990s, and have
only not canceled it because I use the
e-mail address so widely; but lately
Yahoo E-Mail has been trying to convince
me to go elsewhere by repeatedly not having
service available. I am a network
engineer and I expect and need e-mail
which is as reliable as water being
expected when one turns the tap.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Poem Title: Thinking of You
If only I have wings
I’d fly across the skies,
To be with you my love
- the only wish I have.
The emptiness inside
I can no longer hide,
The more that I miss you
I am dazzled with your love.
Everyday of my life
I’m willing to live with you,
Even in the hereafter
I’ll keep thinking about you
October 9th, 2007 at 8:49 am
Poem Title: Happy Birthday..
Your day of birth is here again,
You’re nearly catching up with us…
But steady child, take your time,
There really isn’t any rush….
You have lots to see, both old and new,
Lots to be, and lots to do,
Lots of dreams to hold on too…
That one day soon will all come true.
Lots to learn, and to forget,
Things that haven’t happened yet.
Lots of trials you must get through…
That in the end will make you…. YOU!!!!

Thanks to everyone for the amazing response and kind words for the team. I’m also impressed by the number of comments from longtime users. I’m pretty sure that 10 years ago I was only using the email offered by my ISP, and probably sending about 1 email every 3-4 weeks. Amazing how much has changed!

Happy Birthday!!
I Wouldn’t now whatto do without my Yahoo account!!
Yahoo has been as important to me and my singing career as my website and the phone. I send newsletter to my friends and fans, can contact, send audio samples and my resume, negotiate and confirm concerts and show gigs in one day.
I love the My Yahoo Page and the fact that Yahoo has made my eperience with them my own and unique.
Sincerely,
Michael Cagle

I think you can stop patting yourselves on the
back and start hoping you can honestly one day
call yourselves competent by avoiding my seeing
this:
Can’t talk now. System’s down.
Sorry for the holdup. Looks like a temporary glitch in our network has part of Yahoo! mail down, so you’re briefly without service. Rest assured the alarms are blaring in the basement and our team is working frantically to get you up and running ASAP. Again, the snag is on our end — so there’s no need for you to do a thing.
Back to it,
Yahoo! Mail Team

Congrats, Happy Anniversary/Birthday, WHATEVER!
When will we FINALLY be fully out of Beta and into the “new” Yahoo Mail! that you guys announced on 29 August 2007??? Hmmmmmmmmmmm?
Let’s save the celebratory back-slapping for those occasions when Yahoo actually delivers on their stated intentions. At their current pace, that’ll be another 10 years from now.
October 9th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
It’s hard to believe its been that long…I was one of the early adopters of Rocketmail and came to YahooMail after it was acquired by Yahoo…and thousands of emails later, it continues to be center of my communication world.

October 9th, 2007 at 5:43 pm
I remember when I got my Yahoo! account. I felt so cool b/c everyone else was paying for email :) Through the years–just about all 10–I’ve been able to keep in touch with friends, order stuff, subscribe to newsletters, you name it–all on my Yahoo! email & messenger account. I hardly ever get spam, too!
The interface is easy to use and supercute—plus I really like the new My Yahoo! skins. They are AWESOME! Screw gmail!
Oh—Yahoo! is wonderfully Mac-compatible, too!

I remember back in 1997, when I was in college, wanting to start a webmail account b/c I was going home from college on winter break and wanted to be able to fwd my dialup provider’s email somewhere that I could get ahold of it. I tried to sign up with Rocketmail and found that it was Yahoo Mail instead. So I’ve been on board all 10 years…I hadn’t even realized it had been that long…seems like not so long ago. I’ll bet if I looked around in my labyrinth of folders, I’d find emails from 1997, maybe even the first welcome email from Yahoo. I don’t know how I’d live without it…I did most of my communication with my wedding vendors thru email…saved me hours on the phone and allowed me to have things in writing. What a long, strange ride it’s been, eh…..

Yahoo now offers unlimited e-mail storage why did I receive an email last week to renew my expanded storage at a cost of $19.99?
Comment by Bill Pschigoda — October 9, 2007 #
I was thinking same thing Bill, but there are a few other perks of the paid upgrade…we don’t have to see ads in the email screen at all, and there are no ad lines for Yahoo Services in our outgoing mail. I’ll keep letting them charge me the $20 a year for that.

October 10th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Wow. I joined Yahoo Mail in February 1998 and thought at the time I was one of the later members. Yahoo Mail was only four months old at the time. Yet, back in those days, four months meant I hardly an early adopter! Happy Birthday.
October 10th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
To those who have had yahoo mail down, I think there was something wrong with only part of the network. I never had downtime (that I know of) with my yahoo mail over the past several years. I use it every day, maybe 4 times per day.
For those curious about the transition… The mail farm switched me a few days ago from Beta the real thing, and I have had no problems.
In addition to more storage, I paid for my Plus account to cut out ads and also to get POP3 support (so other mailers can read my yahoo mail). I might not need to spend $19/year now but it’s not much.

I’ve been with Yahoo since July 2007 and couldn’t be more pleased. Happy Birthday and Ad Multos Annos.
October 10th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
I’m not sure exactly when I started using Yahoo Mail, but it couldn’t have been much later than Yahoo Mail started.
Before, I got myself a life-long email address though from pobox.com, providing virtual email addresses; nothing more than a forwarding service. Being able to redirect all incoming mail to my current “real” address, I’d never have to notify anyone of address changes. But of course, a life-long email address is the worst you can imagine to keep spammers out.
So, I started using spammotel.com, providing basically the same functionality as pobox.com, a forwarding service, however, with the difference, that I can create and discard as many spammotel-addresses as I wish. So, whenever I register somewhere, I create a new spammotel-address, keeping my “real” address hidden. And if I get too much spam at that (forwarding) address I simply delete it.
Ever since I started using the Web with the NCSA browser in 1992, I wouldn’t have dreamed of what all was to come.

Yahoo
the one and only 10 years is easy to said but you are a revolution in progress for the benefit of all of us. Congratulations for your birthday
October 10th, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Wow! Hard to believe that I’ve had this email address the entire 10 years. Thanks for the reliable address, Yahoo.
Happy Bday!
October 10th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
congrats
ps
how to mark all mails and then delete?
October 10th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
The new ad bars on my yahoo have become absolutely disgusting with inappropriate sex images etc. If this is how Yahoo celebrates their birthday, they should be ashamed. If it continues, I will not be using yahoo services of any kind.
October 10th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Happy Birthday to Yahoo! Mail
Dear Madam / Sir,
I congratulate you on your successfully completing 10 years of service to the world community, and I am from Bangladesh.
Honestly, I prefer using Gmail for many advantages which we can discuss separately.
Btw, Yahoo! photo migration to ‘photobucket’ (in my case) was a bit disappointing. Now I realize that I should have migrated to Yahoo! Photo Service FLICKR.
Best of Luck!
Hafiz

Let me check… I still have a copy of the verification email… (Yes, back then, you had to have an email address to get a Yahoo email address!)
Ahhh… here it is… Sun, 14 Dec 1997 14:41:36 -0800
Oh… and another thing… back in 1997 you didn’t have to create or use a Secret Question and Answer thing. (Thank goodness!)
Gotta love Pegasus Mail’s longevity, too. :-)

A client of mine updated her computer using the enhanced e-mail product with Norton and her computer crashed. Will this be an on-going problem? How can you remove the enhanced feature so it does not conflict with the anti virus software she utilizes?

December 9th, 2007 at 8:43 am
I think I’ve been using Yahoo mail all these 10 years and have been so satisfied of the fast and reliable service till 2-3 months ago.
Since yahoo announced unlimited storage, the service became slower and slower than ever and worst than that recently, there were emails not reaching my mailbox and getting lost in the void.
Came here to find if there is any known bug but couldn’t find anything.
Hope it gets fixed soon.
December 9th, 2007 at 9:05 am
When I use Firefox browser, the sign in page flashes. It will not let me sign in. Also, my set icon to prevent password theft does not appear. I have reset one using Explorer. Explorer works fine.
This has been happening for more than a week. Pleae help.
December 9th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
This might be a little belated, but Happy Birthday anyway. I couldn’t have put it better than Ira Ben Rambano or many of your other members who listed all of the benefits you have given to them for these many years. At 60 it’s hard to believe that I could have functioned for 54 years without the benefit of Yahoo. Thanks for being there.
December 10th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
I did not like the new email, so I switched back to the classic view. The other is too hard to read. It seems like you can’t see the whole email, or something like that. If you all are still tweeking it, please consider making the reading of a email a lot like the classic view.
Thanks for your time.
