Liam Gets a Workout in the New Mail

For you folks out there that are already in the New Mail, you may have noticed a slightly increased dose of Liam. No longer confined by the limits of JPGs or GIFs, we now get to experience FLASH Liam - ah ahhhh…he’s for every one of us! (Sorry, whenever I read that I keep hearing that theme song )

Anyway, sprinkled around the new Mail are a bunch of Liam animations. In the one below you can see him crowd-surfing. In another you might see him sling-shotting himself across the screen, or breathing fire. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled!

Yeah but the Flash 9.0 (or higher) reqiurement is very limiting. I can’t sign in to chat! Can’t see Liam playing around either. My problem is I sign in using other computers sometimes (like now) so when the one I’m using has an old version of Flash, I can’t use chat. I don’t want to have to download Flash everytime.

Be happy your only problem is a flash problem. Loads of us are still waiting for the update itself. I mean, awesome those animations exist, but all these self-congratulatory messages are kicking sand in the face of those still waiting…

Ryan, you’re representing my favorite email site. Please help build and maintain peoples’ confidence in Yahoo’s professionalism by proofreading before posting.

Aside from that, I enjoy reading what you write, and definitely loved the Flash theme song reference!

Instead of screwing around with cartoon figures, perhaps you should focus on making real improvements. (Did you not receive the peanut butter manifesto?). One helpful enhancement would be “categories” for the new Yahoo! address book.

Wow, that’s really weak. I’ve been a paying for Y!mail plus for years and I still don’t have the latest version. I love Yahoo’s products, but really, get rid of the cute kiddie animations and role the product out to people who support your company.

I’m pretty sure Ryan doesn’t read these comments or if he does they have no influence on what he writes about. It looks like he’s taking his cues from Yahoo! and only tooting the New Mail’s horn rather than addressing any problems that customers might have. I think this “blog” is just a veiled advertising effort, not somewhere to come and comment if you want to be heard. I’m not sure where that would be.

I think yahoo’s designers should take a few cues from google’s success and focus on simple, clean and quick-functioning products. Adding a dancing “Liam” is in my view not an enhancement but more probably an annoyance. Less is more. Come on yahoo! Please don’t follow microsoft’s lead by adding cutesy animations (i.e., cartoon paper clips) and then promote them as “exciting.” I am a yahoo! stockholder and would like to believe in a strong future for the company.

Got to agree with Jim that effort could be better spent fixing problems, such as the scoreboard being uneditable for months. I would also like to be able to edit a saved email.
But then again, Ryan’s (is this a real person?) emails are merely just yahoo patting itself on the back for something most people could care less about.

We really don’t need Liam, the animations really do not help, waste bandwidth and irritate. MS practically ditched Clipit, I suggest Liam is retired before the roll out is concluded.

I can’t imagine having darn dancing Liams. I mean, Liam is cool and all, but on my slow connection, and even here at work on the fast one, I am sure it is just going to be an annoyance. Maybe I should be glad that I haven’t been “migrated” yet!

I wish you would try to improve the site itself. may times I have difficulty just connecting to the email server and sometimes I get an erro when sending emails. I never used to have these problmes with the old interface. I am very disappointed at this unstabble version.

Please, keep the fancy stuff to a minimum. Provide options to turn off the fancy stuff. Put in useful things, like tags or the ability to comment on mail and store the comment with the mail. Fixing the spam folder so it can be searched.

I had try LIAM out for a few days. I was starting to have problems with LIAM system than my current email system. Right now, I am much more happier with my current email system rather than LIAM. I hope that yahoo company convinces me to try LIAM for the second time. I had like some of the features but yahoo has a lot of work to do. nikki

I tried the New Mail Beta and dumped it because of the lousy Address book operation. I now tried the new Mail and it is just as bad. I dumped it. I agree with the other unhappy users about animations. Fix the program first. I have been a user of Yahoo mail for years and I pay my dues. Take care of the user.

Man-I’ve been a Yahoo! mail user for 10 years now, and a premium subscriber for 5, but I am really getting ticked off with this Beta/New mail. Quit the cutesy stuff and focus on the real issues–like not being able to paste things into messages, slow load times, and not being able to completely opt out of messenger. I’m already using your product so quit the ridiculous sales pitch.

Don’t need extra animations or fancy icons, just a simple-to-use interface and a quick-loading site. Simpler is better, make that your mantra, Yahoo! Liam needs to retire to another site, perhaps that silly thing called Bix. Anyone else see that new Y! idea?

i was an oddpost.com subscriber before yahoo bought them out a few years back..

i’m still waiting for yahoo mail to be as good as the oddpost interface.

differences are welcomed, and obviously realistic, but one thing that was promised was a better spam filter.

with oddpost i got a few pieces of spam a week, if that. with yahoo i get at least 6 a day, the same ones repeating even after reporting with the “spam” button.

get it together!

My fear is that Liam’s appearances on the Y.Mail pages will be like all the other Flash advertising that we’re forced to look at. Lots of flash and sizzle that accomplishes little more than to annoy the bejeezus out of us. Fortunately, I can use my ad blocker to eliminate most of those kinds of annoying ads. But I have to wonder if I’ll be able to eliminate Liam if he gets to be too much of a pain!

Whoever made this decision should get a job at Microsoft.

I simply did not install Flash when I installed Firefox.
Internet Exploder 7 has the option available to turn Flash on or off at the double click of an icon. Guess where my browser is set.

Tried the beta several times on both my Desktop and Laptop. It has too many problems; too many error messages, slow loading messages, etc. I haven’t seen Liam and hope I never do. I’m back on the “standard” or “classic” (whatever you call it) email to stay until forced to accept new email. Hope it is fixed before then.

Jim (post #4), funny you say categories as I just received my help request form Yahoo asking when the categories are coming back. I was told that the “lists” replaced them. Ughhhhh, mailing lists were there before. Soooo, it seems that Yahoo just dropped a feature that most cell phones and even Outlook supports. I’m not happy with this decision at all.

BTW, I’m STILL waiting on my mail upgrade here too! How about posting a blog entry on the transfering to the NON beta mail schedule? That would be a much more interesting blog entry.

It’s ridiculous that the full version hasn’t been rolled out to those that pay for Yahoo Plus. I couldn’t care any less about Liam and Ryan posting about something as inane as this while many (most?) don’t even have the full service yet.

Yahoo is great. I love it now, i loved it before. I just would never send it to a grown up, or anyone i hoped to work for one day. Like MacDonalds, its very successful, but not everyone wants to take there date to a food service that serves dinner by a clown with a squirting water flower in label. There is room in this world for ALL mentalities. I mean, who is going to take over Vatican City when the Nazi Pope dies? Come on, Yahoo!

I agree with most of the other posters. We DO NOT need bandwidth-draining nonsense. We need a stable email product. One that actually filters out spam properly. One that really allows us to organize our email - like REAL email client software does.

Here’s a secret for Yahoo!s marketing department, as well as their advertisers: I ignore ALL of the advertising you have bouncing around out there. Don’t waste my time and your money on it. It does no good.

I tried the beta for two minutes. flash ads, etc, give me seizures; please don’t force us all to this, I’ll have to use another email. I couldn’t stand the background colors of the page, and hated the left column appearance. I want my present Yahoo categories for my contacts, etc. I do wish we could still paste a photo into email to send to relatives, as I hate all the steps now required; head injury years ago left me with all these problems. I can only afford dial-up, and it makes the pages turn veeery slooow, so don’t add all the extra garbage. My phone line sends 40 Kbps, though PC modem will handle much more.

I got the new Mail.. and I like it, but it’s a pity that the SMS function is currently not available in most countries. My Mail looks pretty much the same.. But I don’t see any Liams.. Not gonna complain about that, they are not an “improvement”..

Well my opinion is very simple ’cause I really don’t depend that much on Yahoo! Mail, I don’t use ALL of its functions, the only thing I want from a Mail is to send and receive messages. And the features like the Reading Pane and Drag-and-Drop messages to the folders are great for me.

I hope Yahoo! keeps improving, I’m happy with their progress ’cause they’ve satisfied my needs, unfortunately not everyone is happy with that, and it’s their right to be upset ’cause some of them are actually paying for the service. One thing I have to say though, is that you shouldn’t be too harsh on Ryan and the developers, haven’t you seen Windows Live Hotmail? I got it too and it’s just a BAD imitation of the Yahoo! Mail. The space distribution is horrible because of the huge ad banner on top of the page.. If I had to choose, of course I would go to Yahoo! without thinking twice, but I need these two accounts.

Keep working Ryan, you and the Yahoo! crew are doing great, I’m also loving the new My Yahoo! Beta I got yesterday, it’s amazing (and it’s just a Beta! How great will the final version be?). I’ve been using it EVERY DAY for over a year.

Have a nice day/night everyone

With Love,
Andreina

I signed into my yahoo mail at work today and found that my chat no longer works without upgrading to the new flash. Since I don’t have permission to install this I am just out of luck… my sister, kids and california family all communicate with me through the week using the chat feature, but now I won’t be able to talk to my daughter or any one else there since I can’t update flash. This is stupid! I guess if I can come up with a few thousand dollars to pay for a computer and internet at home than I’m ok, but for crying out loud, this was a really stupid update and not servicing the Yahoo Community as a whole at all!
