How to Use the New Advanced Search

The new feature getting the most attention so far is probably the SMS/Text feature, but for you Power Users out there, I think the biggest and baddest of the new bells and whistles will likely be the New Advanced Search. As more and more people take advantage of the unlimited storage (translation: abandon “delete” command), there is an increasing challenge to find that specific message.
Previously users would be able to view results containing a specific word, but now users have the option to easily filter search results by a wiiiide variety of message criteria. How about by sender? Or maybe by folder, date, or message status? It’s up to you.
Which of course brings us to another recent addition to the tutorials library: Searching for Messages. Take a look at the tutorial to get the step by step details on:
Tutorials can always be found by visiting the Help menu in the New Mail, or by clicking the Tutorials link located in the top-right corner of Yahoo! Mail Classic.
As I’ve said before … our Tutorials team wants these to be as easy and helpful as possible, so after checking them out please be sure to answer the “Was this helpful?” and provide any feedback you can!

I found the new *search* features last week. What a great and VERY HANDY feature! Keep up the good work, Yahoo!

New search tools are a terrific improvement. But I tried the SMS/text feature and was able only to send one message to my cell phone. Replies from cell phone did not reach my Yahoo mail, and now Yahoo mail won’t let me message that cell phone number until it gets a reply message. Suyggestions?

Oh, how we need to be able to add searchable tags to emails to make them more findable! Kind of like you can with webpages in My Web 2!
By the way, I’m fond of the Delete button. Even with unlimited storage, there’s no reason to keep all that junk. The trick is being able to decide what is junk and what is not! Now, that’s the question!

Nice feature this is very useful. I agree tagging would be nice. FYI the SMS feature (including replies) works great for me too. Keep up the good work.

Hi,
Why there is no option of Kingdom of Nepal timezone (UCT +5.45) in Account settings? As there is no Nepali timezone in Account settings…it doesn’t show the same in Yahoo! mail too.
But in Yahoo! Calendar there is an option to chose Kingdom of Nepal timezone.
Please reply here urgently and tell me why.

it takes 5 to 6 tries to get to any web site that you want it just plane sucks Im thinking of going back to opera

I think the new search is great, but think a good improvement would be the ability to search individual folders, so that if i want to move stuff from my inbox to a separate folder from somebody i could easily find only those messages. I do know about the column that tells you what folders email are in.

I tried accessing my email from another computer, and my email works fine, so I think I have a bug but my bug finder isn’t picking it up. My emails will not allow me to compose, forward or reply to an email when I hit any of these the window pops up with everything but the box to type your text in, I also tried typing text into word and attaching, but that didn’t work either. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?? I have shut everything down completely and still have the problem!! Please help

Why are you trying to fix unbroken things? This has been one of the most frustrating days I’ve spent on the computer in a long time! No wonder your customer services lines are all busy! How do I get back to my old system? Perhaps be changing e-mail servers? I absolutely do not like changes, especially when they appear unannounced and the one who made the unwanted change tries to tell me how much I am going to like it.

I was looking for upgraded tutorials when I stumbled onto this site. No luck. Tutorials are needed to figure out how to work around the Beta and the New Yahoo Mail.

I am steadily, gradually loosing all access to my YAHOO! email.
Whether I try to Delete, or compose, or ….., an “error on page” message appears. Well, sometimes, the message is “Done,” but nothing changes from before clicking on the command. That is, if I want to delete, I Check the box beside the email I want to delete, hit the trash can: STILL I read “Done.” But the display remains as before. I click on Help, and the message is “Error on page.”

February 6th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
John, I’m having the exact same problem as per getting “Done” and/or “Error on page” any time I try to delete, reply, forward, move to a folder. In short, this is a real pain. I hope Yahoo fixes it soon!!!

Recently I noticed that Yahoo search only returns results from the last few weeks. For example: I get a lot of mail from sender “Southwest” almost every other day but when I do a Yahoo Mail search I only get 2 results from the last 2 weeks. When I check my mail account I know I have over 100 messages for the past 2 years from them. What is going on with Yahoo Mail! You guys better fix this before there is a mass migration to Gmail. Please don’t loose your edge and your valued customers.

March 4th, 2008 at 9:55 am
I also am getting search results only from the past few weeks.
March 9th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
I’ve been having the same failing / limited Yahoo mail search problem also. Can only go back a week or so.
Have tested it with searches I use all the time, like Southwest Airlines.
Something has gone wrong in the indexing service.

My search will only pull up emails from 2/29/08 and later. I sent an email to customer service, but who knows if I’ll ever get a response.

This is the response I received from Yahoo Customer Care:

Why yahoo mail search and even advance search does not look back to previous years?
Very annoying… better not to give search at all!!
June 9th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
My search feature only looks at emails received within the last month. From previous comments I can see that this problem has been going on since February at least.
I guess it’s just not that important to get it fixed. In the meanwhile users will switch to Google mail or HotMail.
June 14th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
This is totally ridiculous. I cannot search my inbox to find anything older than a few months. For a company based upon a search engine, this is embarrassing. I don’t know what moron made the decision to limit searches to the previous few month’s worth of email, but this is not how user’s work. Most people rely on this kind of functionality. I actually pay for my yahoo account, but I think after months of this nonsense, I’m going to finally switch to gmail.
June 19th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
yahoo mail search works really bad if not at all, it seems I’m not the only one to have big problems.
But above all, this advanced search is really por and slow.
Anyone not convinced have a look at Gmail advanced search:

I reallly hope that Yahoo will follow Gmail for its serach function and features, as its current ones is a full failure.
Please Yahoo, WAKE UP

What is with this Yahoo email search engine. It used to work great but now I can’t find anything except for stuff about 1 week old. First I search manually so I know the email exists…then I do the Yahoo search and it doesn’t find anything.
Can’t believe Yahoo can’t fix this vital feature. I’ve had my account for years but will migrate to Gmail if they don’t address this soon.
Contacted customer support but didn’t get any answer.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:30 am
The advanced search feature was nice…narrow down results was cool too… except it works no longer. I get zero results, whatever I am searching. I have tried both the newer interface and the classic interface with identical results. This has been going on for a while, and is more than sufficient to make me willing to phase out my use of yahoo mail. No Pop unless you pay, no Imap even if you pay, and now no search? It’s just impossible to find stuff.
Unbelievable that this has been going on for months!
July 11th, 2008 at 10:46 am
I can only retrieve emails from one to two weeks. Has yahoo posted a solution to this problem or fixed it. How widespread is the problem
July 14th, 2008 at 1:46 am
Heh! I thought I was the only one suffering from this dumb search syndrome until I found this site!
I too haven’t been able to get search results even though the search keyword used is definitely in my inbox.
It is surprising that this has been a problem since February 2008. That’s almost half a year ago. Although I only started having this problem a week ago, this has been going on far too long for other people.
What is the solution to this problem? I hope it’s not Gmail…
July 14th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
When I try to search for emails, I only get results dated year 2007 and earlier: no results for 2008!
July 18th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
I am having this problem as well….when i search by sender and i know I should have tons from that sender in the last month I may get one result or sometimes none. This is very disheartening to find out this has been going on for some users since February!!

I too am having the search problem. I can’t find any e-mail older than a few weeks. Anyone know how we contact Yahoo to get this fixed?

I too am having the search problem. I contacted tech support and they say that they are aware of the problem, but did not provide a timeline for fixing it.

After at least 6 years of good experience I only get search results for the last two weeks. I used the search function at least 10 times a day. I’m really frustrated and this just started on 7/10/08 or so. I have to switch to another provider.
August 9th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
I am also having the same issue with the search function; I contacted customer service and got the same response like everyone else…..I think they should be able to provide us with rough timeline as to when we should expect this problem to be resolved….
