Check out Yahoo! Mail Tutorials

As promised, I’m back with a quick refresher on a great resource for both beginner and experienced Yahoo! Mail users…Tutorials. Yahoo! offers these tutorials for all sorts of topics (Messenger for the Web, MyYahoo beta, etc.) but what matters here is that there is a lot of great information for Yahoo! Mail users. Whether you are using Yahoo! Mail Beta, or the original Yahoo! Mail, there are tutorials for you.

If you take a look at the upper right corner of your Yahoo! Mail you should see a link to Help (my example shows Yahoo! Mail Beta, but there is also a link in the original Yahoo! Mail). Activiting that link will reveal a drop-down menu with a link to Tutorials.

tut5.jpgDepending on which Yahoo! product you are in, you will be taken to a specific Tutorials page. Since I’m showing the link in the beta, this example shows the tutorials associated with Yahoo! Mail Beta, but if you are using the original Yahoo! Mail you can see the tutorials here.

In reviewing some of the comments left for me last week, it seems that many of you still have questions about the Messenger for Mail feature. As luck would have it there are tutorials that focus on exactly that! Need to know how to manage your login status? How about changing from Speech Bubbles to Standard Text? Tutorials will provide steps and screenshots to walk you through the process. Also be sure to click on one of the User Surveys and let the Tutorials team know your thoughts!

After reading the blog, why are there no links at the top of the page to return to My Yahoo or Mail or Yahoo, as there are on most other Yahoo pages?

Thanks for the suggestion Scott. I’ll add some links and look into how we can incorporate them into the header.

The reason I’m not using the Beta mail version is because when I tried it there was no way to preview attachments like there is in the regular version.

Has that been added or are there any plans on adding the file preview feature to the Beta product?

I am having a terrible experience with my Yahoo mail. Everything is being classified as SPAM, even my church Bullitens, I can not open any of my mail or anything that I have stored in the past. How can I get this problem corrected? Just started yesterday. 8-15-07 Thanks for any help.

Wasn’t sure where to post feature suggestions…

It’s hassle to download attachments one by one if there are more than a handful. So I just wait till I get home and download the message through Thunderbird.

It would be nice to be able to download all attachments in one shot.

Every time I try to log into my Yahoo mail account (bata) it locks up and I have to use the windows task manager to close it. It’s been that way for a couple of days now. Why isn’t there a way to send an email directly to Yahoo about a problem you’re having

I have been a Yahoo email user for years. I believe the old interface is great and easy to use. I actually prefer it over all the other email accounts that I have. I currently have at least five different accounts. Most of them are dormant from lack of use.

I tried the new email beta and it was very slow. The fact that I could not change easily back to the old email makes me gun shy to try the new beta again. The clicking on the “go back” link did not work for me. I had to send a request to Yahoo Help which quickly changed me back.

There is a problem that we have that is random and does not happen very often. Some email can be delayed between one hour and one day. I do not know why. For home use, this is an annoyance. For home office use this could lose valuable customers.

There is a rumor that Yahoo prioritizes email delivery and bulk mail could be stored on a server to be delivered at a later time. Could it be that some regular mail is being marked as bulk mail?

There is also a rumor that some bulk mail gets “discarded” with SMTP error codes 421 and 451 which means “Message temporarily deferred.” Have you seen this?

Can anything be done to fix these problems? I have been told that other email providers do not have these problems. But they do not have your great users interface.

Thank you for your help.

Correction: In the above email I said that the new beta was slow. What I should have said was that it was slow when I tried it three or four months ago before the new new beta was released with the faster code. I just have not tried the new new beta yet.

The new beta is SLOW!!! The old Yahoo mail has a much better interface and that’s why I used it to begin with… you are trying to copy other mail programs… if I wanted that type of a mail program, I wouldn’t be using Yahoo!
I am also having a problem with some of my mail not showing up for a couple of days after it was sent and trouble with access at all recently. What is Yahoo doing??? The beta is NOT an improvement!!!

I’m receiving emails that appear to be from Yahoo claiming that my account will be closed if I don’t fill out the form provided. Has anyone else gotten this letter? I have gotten two today.

My observations…

1) The advertisement pane on the right side is really great. I can just hide it if I feel like wanting more real-estate for reading a big mail.

2) It is nice to note that now non-English language (Unicode Tamil) mails appear as good as languages using Roman script. But other Yahoo services, especially Yahoo Groups, needs improvement in this area.

3) Folder filter takes precedence over spam filter, resulting in SPAM mails being delivered to folders even though Yahoo applies an excellent spam protection against these mails if they were delivered directly to Inbox.

can anyone tell me if there is a new mail indicator sound that can be used when using Yahoo mail? I guess Similar to AOL’s you’ve got mail if I keep a copy minimized.
Thanks

Well I’m so glad Beta is so much better, bigger, yada, yada, yada. I still can’t get logged in to it. Gives me a big yahoo error message and the powers at be at Yahoo refuse to answer my request for help. So Beta on y’all. I’m still using stupid old regular Yahoo mail. Maybe it’s time I go over to Hotmail.

Hi all,

Thanks again to those of you with kind words about the beta, and thanks as well to those who are making suggestions. I will continue to pass along the key issues.

Also, some quick notes on some of the questions -

Denise,

Back when the beta first launched the initial load time was longer and Liam was there to help make that time more enjoyable. Now that the load time is so much faster we will have to find more ways to get you more Liam :)

Georgia,

Please don’t respond to those emails. If you have important account updates you will received them when you login the normal way. Please avoid any situations where you fill out account information in an email.

I really like the new Yahoo Beta. It has a lot of great functions. I would really like to continue to use it as my primary means of Email, though today I hit an performance related issue that may change my mind on the subject. I believe Beta should be all that the old Yahoo is, but more, not less.

I attempted to cut and paste a piece of information for an outgoing email letter I was sending to a friend, but when I did the right click to paste, the response on the screen was like a “select all” to the email letter, rather than to just simply give me the option to paste the object. The when I hit the paste option, the rest of the letter disappeared. I tried many times, but the same results.I could find no way to get around this problem, nor could I resolve it in any fashion.

Give it a try, let me know if you experience the same results. Write a letter. Then try to add a cut and paste object. Let me know.

Thank you. I do appreciate.

BobDee,

I don’t believe there is currently a Mail indicator within Yahoo! Mail, but many people use the email notification built into Yahoo! Messenger. You may want to try that.

I can no longer close the Yahoo mail program by clicking on the red “x” in the top right corner–I have to go through alt-control-delete. This started occurring after upgrading to the new version of Yahoo. Also, when I type in a box, such as in here, many letters and spaces are missing, requiring me to go through each message to correct the errors before sending. Is there a way to revert to the older version I had which worked fine?

Search Issues
1)It would be helpful if the search history were stored permanently, for reuse.

2) When trash is emptied , the search window is not refreshed but empty.

It would be helpful if all emails and attachments in a particular folder could be exported.

This was suggested (generically) back in August 2007 by someone and still hasn’t been implemented.

Other than this, I do in fact prefer (and use more often) the old format, but the newer format is helpful from time to time. :) Thanks!
