Not up for a chat?

Back in February I posted about integrating Yahoo! Messenger and Yahoo! Mail Beta. It’s a feature that allows you to have an instant message (aka chat) conversation right from within your mailbox. Back then, it was just a sneak peak. Now you should all have the ability to chat directly from within your Yahoo! Mail Beta mailbox.
What if I don’t feel like chatting?
I’ve been reading and listening to all of your comments, and a common question is, “How can I turn chat off?” The answer of course is, “Easily”. Here’s how…
From the top of the Mail Beta window you should see a status message next to your @yahoo.co.uk ID. Just click on the down arrow and then click on “Sign out of chat”. That’s it – you’re done. And, the next time you sign into mail, we’ll remember your status and you won’t be logged back into Chat until you set your status back to “Available”.

I would like to see this chat implemented in the original Yahoo! Mail.

what if you want to ban chat? our voluntary org uses our a/c for day to day communications, and we certainly do not wish to enable something like that!

what you do not seem to appreciate is that yahoo mail is not only used by youngsters at home, but also by grown up adults and even small organisations who do not wish to be flooded by mindless chatter or news flashes. we wish to see a simple, quick to use, and more basic product. our own machines are slow, and the new yahoo is actually less user friendly for us.

I appreciate your comments. Yahoo! Mail Beta is a fully featured email client that you can use right from your browser. If you don’t need all of the features that the Beta Mail offers, you are more than welcome to switch back to the classic version of Yahoo! Mail. I even posted about how to switch back and forth. It would be good to have that instant chat added to the classic version of Yahoo! Mail.
But I bet it can’t be done.

I’d also like to see a standalone email notifier (if possible) .. similiar to Googles .. but better, obviously.

The new chat feature is very irritating as it never manages to connect – either at work or at home. I want to be able to turn it off completely so that it never even tries to connect.

the new yahoo beta is cool and interesting to use the only limitation that it is slow in loading and booting-up, then its constant failures.

I like the instant chat idea. I am not allowed MSN so this gives me a chance to IM my friends. The yahoo beta is much more fun than the original yahoo. It doesn’t take a long time to load up on my computer

is yahoo messenger the same as msn? because my friends are on msn can i chat to them even though im on yahoo?

Hi Jodie,
Yes, you can chat with your friends on MSN Live. However you can’t chat from within the chat function of Mail. You will have to download the Yahoo Messenger Client in order to chat with your MSN Friends. You can find out more and get the client from here: http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com/

i hate this new format. I can not delete messages, I can not get the content of a message – only the to, from date etc. I can not find this switch back to link.

hello iam very happy that iam one of yahoo clilent but what is surprised me all my massengers chats are not go or recieved by my friends when iask them they just said you have not send us any message so ibecome angry can you reply mi hadi

Hi
Can people who do not have an e-mail account with yahoo be shown to be ‘online’? Evertime I check my mail and connect as available on chat, it only shows one contact available, which is my own e-mail address.

The chat function in Yahoo! Mail Beta allows you to chat with other Yahoo! Mail or Messenger users and see if they’re available. However, you can’t do this with people who don’t use Yahoo! Mail or Messenger.

I came to Yahoo! through joining a group and I have to admit that although I haven’t been using Yahoo! Mail Beta for long. I find it easy to use but I don’t like the fact that I cannot contact anyone to report a problem and thereby get some help to get it put right.
I have spent literally two hours going through all aspects of Yahoo! including Yahoo! Mail Beta trying to find a way to get in touch with you.
Inow this box is for leaving comments, but, because I have no way of emailing or phoning you I am going to ask for the help I need now.
When I am using the email service every time I try to send a message or save a message to a folder I get a message from Yahoo saying ‘Server Error’.
Also three times I have received a message telling me about a Server Error either when I have tried to send an email or when I am actually writing one.

i can’t seem to update to match my contacts and therefore i may be online but still not be able to get any messages and by the way how do u sned files or photos with yahoo.How diffrent is it from yahoo messenger becoz i also can’t log in to yahoo messenger.Somebody pliz help a poor soul me

I like Yahoo and all the features (including chat) that come with it, I have switched from hotmail as it annoyed me so much with the flash adverts, the chat is easy to use and to switch off, just wanted to say that some people are never happy!! If you don’t like it switch to basic, and if you’re using it for work then stop moaning as it’s a free service (and not designed for office email) – not all of us want basic. Yahoo – I think it’s all good! :)

My friends with MSN Live can chat to me on my yahoo! mail BUT i cant reply them.
I can reply them only by mail message NOT BY CHAT. I have always the message “you have first to add this contact to your list” i done it, but nothing change, the same message comes always.
How can I reply to my friends with MSN and reply them ???

Is it possible, with the new system , to be able to show yourself available only to the contact you want to chat to, rather than being visable to all ?

Hi Paula,
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, the ability to set yourself available to one user is not available at the moment. However, an alternative is that you can set yourself as invisible. You can still chat when you are invisible, however you will not appear to be online. That way you can chat with the contact you want but you will not appear online.

fatma: same problem here.
I managed to add an MSN live contact, but he had to first delete me from live messenger, then i tried to add him again and thats how it worked…
I think the problem only happens when you are using your yahoo mail and have allready joined MSN live with it…
Otherwise, this would happen to just about every1…
(not sure though)

why is it my yahoo mail chat not loading? its been almost a month. at first I thought it was a yahoo problem coz that time they said that yahoo server is experiencing some technical problem and their working on it, after a week i try logging in to other computer & it work, yahoo mail chat load up but this time not on my pc. i already reseted the internet security into default level but still yahoo mail chat not working. why?? is there anything i need to update or upgrade? java? adobe? please help me with this.

Hi, i would like to use this feature so that i could show my uncle how to use it. He has a daughter in working Saudi. But there seems to be a few glitches in the system, and until it has settled down into a more stable system, i don’t think i’ll bother.
That’s why i prefer the old interface!
I have been using Yahoo! several years now and think it is far better than Hotmail.
Keep improving, but make it quicker and more stable and more people will transfer over.

This yahoo messenger setup is absurd. If you switch it on you are swamped by spam conversation requests. There should be a settingallowing you to accept communication requests from certain users — a whitelist — while blocking ALL OTHERS.

I like the Yahoo classic mail where I can switch back and forth to chat then email then two days ago I keep getting a message that in order for me to use the chat feauture I need to download Adobe Flash player.. I’ve downloaded the player gazillion times and still not working every time I change my status I am still offline and can only do email and won’t show my contacts who are online. Is there a simple answer to this dilemma or shal I just discontinue this yahoo and forget about emailing or chatting? I am so tired of trying to be told by Yahoo to dow
