Chatterbox Inbox

I hope you don’t mind, but I just wanted to take a minute to give you a sneak peak on a new Yahoo! Mail Beta feature that I’m really excited about. Usually I don’t like to talk about things until they’re available to all of you, but this one I just couldn’t keep under wraps.

Coming soon to a browser near you…
…it’s text chat (or instant messaging if you prefer to call it) right from your Yahoo! Mail Beta mailbox!

Huh?!?! Well, in short, we’re integrating Yahoo! Mail Beta and Yahoo! Messenger. It’s a feature that allows you to have a conversation with another Yahoo! Mail or Messenger user right from within your Yahoo! Mail Beta mailbox. When you log into your mailbox you will see, at the top of the window, a status message (Available or Offline) and a drop down arrow. When you click that icon, here’s what it’s going to look like…

Set your status and see who is online.

Once you set yourself Available, your contact list will show all of your contacts that have set themselves Available too. When you click that arrow next to the contacts that are online, you will be able to select anyone on that list and start a conversation with them right from the comfort of your own Mailbox window. Here’s what it’s going to look like when your engrossed in a conversation with one of your friends:

Screenshot of how it looks.

Our friends and colleagures in the US have created a “screencast” of how the new Mail and Messenger integration will look. You can view it here: http://ymailupdates.com/screencasts/mail_messenger_integration/.

That looks pretty cool, when can I get it?
Right now, the new instant messaging feature will roll out to Yahoo! Mail beta users over the next 3 months.

Keep your eyes peeled to this blog and to your mailbox. Instant messaging in Yahoo! Mail Beta is coming soon.

Happy emailing!

    Hi Alina,
You can switch between the all-new Yahoo! Mail and the classic version of Yahoo! Mail quite easily. I’ve posted about how to do it here: http://ymailuk.com/blog1/2007/04/26/make-the-switch%e2%80%a6/
    Hope that helps,

Please yahoo i,want you to help me becouse some people used to send me some message cleaming that they are yahoo officials they need my name, bank account, phone Number, and all my imformation.
please tell me more abaut this.Thanks.

    Hi Nura,

Yahoo! would never ask for your personal information in an unsolicited email.  You shouldn’t give out any of your information or even respond to these types of emails.

These type of emails are called phishing scams.  Scammers try to lure people into providing their personal or financial information by claiming that they’re from an official company.  For more information on what to do if you get an email asking for personal information, cilck on the link below: http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/abuse/abuse-20.html

WHAT IF I DO NOT WANT CHAT ?????? HOW DO I REMOVE THIS FROM MY MAIL

  12. Fuchsia says:

The chat within yahoo mail is a lovely idea, and I’ll probably use it at home, but sooner or later it means that your service is going to be blocked at my work, and I imagine at lots of other peoples’ workplaces and schools.

We’re not allowed to access chat programs or websites at my workplace, and I’d appreciate it if it were possible to completely turn off this feature so that it doesn’t automatically start up when I enter my mail. I don’t want to have to switch back to the old style of mail or switch to a different online email provider, as I’ve been using yahoo mail for nearly a decade through different accounts and I love the other new features, but I’m going to be forced to if this new feature means the whole website gets blocked.

I hope you’ll consider adding this option as a future development. Otherwise, I think all of the new features have been fantastic!

    Thanks,
    Fuchsia.

Yahoo! Mail Beta is a lovely shiny interface… But I miss some of the good things from old Yahoo! Mail that have been taken out or altered.

    1) The dialog box allowing you to attach multiple files to a message. Now you have to click on each one and wait for ages.
    2) The messages in folders used to load and display much more quickly.
    3) Logging into Yahoo! Mail used to be instant. Now it can take 10 seconds or more, depending on connection speed.
    4) It really annoys me that I now have to read news headlines at every login. Can’t I go straight to the Inbox like in the past?
    5) When I select a message and click on “Print”, the printer options dialog pops up before you have a chance to “print preview” the message! So you don’t know what pages to print or what the output will look like!

The only good points I have found with the new Beta Mail are: -
    1) It’s colourful and intense.
    2) The tabs make things a lot quicker.
    3) The viewing pane for messages is a handy feature.
